Manager’s MessageBy John J. Shults, Director of Operations

It’s hard for me to believe that already a new year is upon us, and even harder for meto believe that by the time of this publication, I will have been the Director of Operationsof Wild Acres for four months! Time truly does fly!

Whenever the calendar year changes, it offers us time to reflect on how far we havecome. Not to date myself, but I recall seeing the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, andthinking how ridiculously far away 2001 seemed at the time. Thinking about it now, thetime went by in the blink of an eye. As time flies by, we need to consider how busy andpacked with events the next few weeks and months will be at Wild Acres.

Our 2011-2012 Operating Budget has been drafted and is in the process of beingreviewed as of this writing. And while next year’s budget is an item I have been person-ally working on and worrying over since my arrival, I had quite a bit of help from ourBudget and Finance Committee (specifically Diane McDonald) and our new Treasurer,Jim Bradley. Both have proven invaluable so far in moving the process forward.

I also had the opportunity to meet with the Department Of Environmental Protectionand RKR Hess (our engineer) to review the first stage of the dam project, which will bethe remediation of the Long Ridge Dam. Despite the chilly temperatures, the conversationbetween us was warm and friendly, and we look in great shape to begin this project insecond or third quarter of 2011.

I would also like to thank all of the employees who, through one way, shape or form, have sacrificed in order for us to keep on track financially. Whether it’s multitasking, cutting spending, or adjusting schedules to get right sized, the team at Wild Acres hasbeen constantly evaluating their procedures to ensure we are being fiscally responsiblewhile delivering Wild Acres Residents all of their essential services.

Lastly, for those of you who were unable to attend the Wild Acres New Year’s Gala, Ican tell you the party was a huge success! Thanks go out to Lauren Cernek, who did all ofthe ordering, scheduling, and planning for the event, and all the Wild Acres employeeswho assisted in the event- from the initial ticket sales to the final clean up.

Don’t Get Behind on Dues -

Arrange for a Payment PlanDear Wild Acres Residents; As unfortunate as it is, there are many house-

holds in the area that are facing foreclosures andbankruptcies. While we expect all residents ofWild Acres to pay their dues in full, we alsounderstand there are times where a hardship causesa property owner to fall a little behind.

When an owner gets more than a little behind, our office takes steps to collect the money owed toWALPOA, including filing a lien on the propertyor taking the property up for a Sheriff’s sale.

To avoid getting more than a little behind, contact the office to arrange a payment planwith us. We will always request a property owner sign a written payment plan, so a visit tothe office is usually required. We also offer the ability to pre-pay dues for 2011. A fewdollars here and there can greatly reduce the total for next year.

Sincerely,Ingrid WeichtCollections Officer, WALPOA

WALPOA Dam ProjectThis year begins the multi-year WALPOA dam project. Phase one, expected to begin

in the second or third quarter of this year, is the lowering of the crest and replacement ofthe spillway at Long Ridge Lake.

There is an annual assessment to fund this project of $250 per year in addition to yourannual dues. While we understand these can be difficult financial times, please keep inmind that you can call the office to make payment arrangements or pay in advance.

Also, the assessment is treated like the annual dues in that unpaid assessments willresult in late charges, loss of use of amenities, interest charges, and suspended gate cards.

Remember, our lakes not only make Wild Acres Lakes a great place to live, but alsoincrease property values and the appeal of the community. Thank you in advance forhelping to keep the “Lakes” in Wild Acres Lakes!

Snow Removal Tips As winter approaches, it won’t be longbefore our Maintenance Department will be outundertaking snow removal and de-icingoperations. Please remember that these opera-tions are performed under emergency condi-tions. Our snow plow drivers often endureextended work hours to provide safe andeffective snow removal from our streets.

Here are a few tips that may help you avoidshoveling headaches....

• If possible, wait to shovel the last six (6) feetof your driveway until we have completed edgeof road plowing on your street. This will helpprevent our plows from pushing snow backinto your driveway.

• If you must shovel the last six (6) feet ofyour driveway prior to our completing plowingoperations on your street, place the snow to theright of your driveway (standing with your

back to your house). Placing snow in this area lessens the amount plowed backonto the drive area. Please understand that proper plowing operations cannotprevent the redeposit of snow in driveway areas.

Winter Parking ReminderWinter weather will soon be here. As a reminder, you may not park your

vehicles on the side of the road. This impedes Maintenance from properly plowingthe roadways and may result in damage to your vehicle and/or a written citation.

Common Sense for a Healthier LifestyleBy Sensei Albert Casale

I am amazed by the numbers of people who still think that medicine would offereverything they wanted to be and stay healthy, and by the number of people who tell methey don’t have the time to exercise, or eat healthy meals, or get a good night’s sleep.Well the truth is if you don’t “make” the time to be healthy, you’re not likely to be aroundas long as your kids and grandchildren would like.

Starting a plan for getting healthy and to live the best life possible for as long aspossible, can be achieved with some simple common sense.

Here are some tips to help start a healthier lifestyle:* Find your purpose, your purpose will fuel your performance; define clearly what you

want in your life.* Manage your stress. Stress can be good or bad…Good stress can help you make

structural decisions. Bad stress can lower your immunity and make you susceptible toillness. You can train your body to respond more positively to stress, by deep breathingand meditation.

* Get your body in motion. In cultures where people live long and healthy lives, rigorous physical activity is the norm. (Always check with your doctor before starting anyexercise program.)

* Revitalize your diet. The symptoms of our modern society, such as overweight, constipation, circulatory disturbances, and heart problems, are caused for the most part bypoor nutrition and eating too many calories.

* Smoking. The health dangers of smoking are so well known; there is no need torecite them here. There is no argument that smoking is very destructive to your health andbeauty, the only solution is to consider smoking an absolute NO-NO.

* Alcohol shouldn’t be used as a thirst quencher. But if you sip it slowly, savoringeach sip, to prolong relaxation after work or a pint of beer to refresh after an afternoon onthe golf course can be an acceptable pleasure. When excessive drinking occurs, your lookswill tell everyone else and can cause your organs not to function properly.

Required PermitsBurning Permit - All members are required to obtain a burning permit from Public

safety, which is good only for the day you are burning.Tree Cutting Permit - All members are required to apply for a tree cutting permit from

the Administration Office and receive approval prior to the cutting of any trees. We thankyou for your anticipated cooperation.

Building Permit - After all approvals are received from the township and conserva-tion, if necessary.

Winter Driving Safety TipsHere are some winter driving safety tips compiled from different internet sources:

• Slow down. Most accidents are caused by driving too fast for conditions.• Use your low-beam headlights in bad weather, especially where snow is falling

heavily or blowing.• Don’t use your cruise control in slippery road conditions.• Remove ice and snow from windows, mirrors, and vehicle lights, both front and

rear, as often as necessary.• Always wear you seat belts.• Leave extra room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you in poor

visibility and slipper conditions.• Your safest place in bad weather is a safe distance behind a snowplow, where

you will find the clearest road and best traction.• If possible, avoid driving at all in bad weather conditions. Stay home until the

weather improves and the roads clear.• Roads that have been treated with liquid deicer may be wet and slippery. It’s

important to watch you speed, particularly around curves.

Here are some ways to keep your car under control:• To maintain traction, start and stop gradually to avoid losing traction in wet or

slippery conditions. Drive at steady speeds, avoiding sudden starts or stops.Accelerate slightly when approaching a hill, then maintain steady speed goingup. Gearing down ahead of downgrades can help avoid brake wear and reducethe chances of sliding.

• To avoid skids drive sensible and steadily.• Anticipating turns or lane changes will help. If your vehicle begins to skid,

remove your foot from the accelerator or brake and steer in the direction of theskid. When the vehicle steadies itself, turn the wheels straight and proceed.

• Breaking – Be gentle with braking pressure during slippery road conditions.Gentle pumping action on disc brakes will avoid locking the wheels and sendingthe vehicle into a skid or spin. Anti-lock braking systems provide the action foryou. Avoid braking on curves by driving through them at a safe, steady speed.Gear down for going both uphill and downhill.

• Four-wheelers can’t stop better or faster on ice and snow than 2WD vehicles, even if they are locked into four-wheel drive. The heavier the vehicle, the longerit takes to stop, no matter how many drive wheels. Many of the popular sportutility vehicles (SUVs) are heavy and require a greater stopping distance.

EQUIPMENT and SUPPLIES:• Snow shovel• Scraper with a brush on one end• Tow chain or strap• Tire chains• Flashlight (with extra batteries)• Abrasive material (cat litter, sand, salt, or traction mats)• Warning device (flares or reflective triangles)• Brightly colored cloth to signal for help• Candles, matches (in a water tight container) or a lighter• High-energy food (chocolate or dried fruit, for example)• Sleeping bags or blankets, ski caps and mittens• First-aid supplies• Compass• Cell phone if you have one
