Leadership Our Vic High Leadership team has been working hard so far this year to support our school and community. The Leadership students started the year by hosting our annual Cornerstone Breakfast. They also organized events for Halloween, such as pumpkin carving, costume contest, and collecting food for Our Place. In addition, they organized and hosted our Remembrance Day assembly. On top of organizing big school events, our Leadership team contributes to the following: supporting our grade 9 students during collaboration, preparing and serving toast every morning, preparing fresh food for homerooms, being ambassadors for our school for community and school events, keeping the school sign up to date, supporting Orange Shirt day, collecting warm clothes for Foundry, and much more. These students work tirelessly to support school spirit, school initiatives, and community initiatives.

HAVE YOUR SAY: Catchment Boundary Review Catchment boundaries are the geographical areas that determine which students are eligible to attend a specific school. The Greater Victoria School District is seeking public input on important considerations when re-evaluating catchment boundaries. Due to increasing enrolment and limited space in some of its schools, the District must align registration with schools’ capacities. Some schools are full and enrolment projections indicate an additional 1,800 students may enroll in the District over the next 10 years. To accommodate the growing student population, the District must balance registration across the District with the space available at each school. As part of the Catchment Boundary Review, The Greater Victoria School District is asking parents to participate in an online survey to provide valuable feedback to the Board of Education. The online survey is available at www.sd61.bc.ca until Friday, November 30, 2018.

Science Forearm and Hand Anatomy and Suturing Courses at Vic High - Last Spring Dr. David Naysmith, a plastic surgeon and alumnus of Victoria High School, held a one day suturing course with Mr. Young at Victoria High School. He was joined by his colleague Dr. Sandra Taylor as well as past principals Peter Boldt (who is 93) and Keith McCallian (who is a bit younger). Students were offered a unique experience as Dr. Naysmith taught them about what he does as a plastic surgeon and then showed them proper suturing techniques with hands-on training using the equipment he would be using during an operation. This spring a small group of students will be joining Dr. Naysmith and Mr. Young for a 6 week hand anatomy course that will occur at Vic High as well as at Uvic’s Anatomy lab; students selected for the course will be notified in January. In addition, Dr. Naysmith has indicated he would like to offer the one day suturing course at Vic High again at the end of the hand anatomy course. These courses will provide unique opportunities for Vic High students. -David Young

Junior Science This semester has gotten off to a great start in the Junior Sciences! From exploring how to use Bunsen burners and doing experiments to racing pop cans down the length of Fairey Tech using the laws of static electricity, students have been actively exploring scientific concepts and the world around them. We researched the common uses and explored the impact chemical compounds and are well on our way to more projects, labs, and hands-on learning experiences.

French Immersion Our Vic High French Immersion students have been very busy this school year. In September our grade 9 and 10 students studied different francophone countries from around the world and then went to La Belle Patate in Esquimalt to sample some authentic poutine. This past week our grade 9 and 10 students also joined French Immersion students from Lansdowne middle school, Central middle school and Sir James Douglas elementary school to take in the Imax screening of “A Beautiful Planet” in French. Our junior students have also been having a blast participating in PE outings and activities around Victoria thanks to the organization of Mme Mengual. All of our French Immersion students will be heading to the Save on Foods Memorial Arena to go skating on December 4th. This next month our French Immersion grad class will start working on their Capstone projects, their final year-end portfolio presentations. Students will reflect upon their high school journey and prepare for the future by researching their post-secondary, travel and working options. Our grade 9 and 10 students will be participating in a day long Techworks event at the Victoria conference center on December 5th to learn about and explore the tech sector in Victoria and will participate in 4 sessions on financial literacy. Our French Immersion students have been very busy and have also been active in our community. We are looking forward to an exciting second term! Bravo! -Jean Campbell

Sports Senior Boys Soccer

This year’s Vic High soccer season was one to remember. This closely knit team experienced the highs and lows of high school soccer, but ultimately came out on top. Everybody on the team fought hard every time they stepped out on the field to play. What made this team special and eventually led to them being Colonist Shield Champions was that everybody had each other’s backs. Whatever they did on the field, they did as a team. This meant they played for each other; there were no lazy days, no low effort days, and no excuses. Having a team made up of grade 9-12 players, both domestic and International, allowed for the boys to learn and grow from each other, and created a level of camaraderie that transcended age and ability. Overall, this season was a tremendous success, and a huge step forward for the Vic High soccer program. Since the introduction of the Shield Championship in 1976, Vic High’s name was absent from the plague. This means we have achieved a feat that was 42 years in the making. We wish to share our congratulations to all players, wish good luck to the graduating players, and look forward to next year. -Adrian Herlaar and Cecil Michel

Cross Country The 2018 Vic High cross country season was a successful one. The team competed in 3 league meets and concluded the season with the Island Championships, where the Junior Boys Raymark Dalafu, Owen Campbell, Elijah Dela Cruz and Jia Situ finished 11th as a team and Junior Girl Emma Campbell qualified for the Provincial Championships with a 17th place finish. At Provincials Emma ran a gutsy race to place 115th overall. Congrats to the whole team on a great season! -Doug Oxland, Coach Tikis Girls’ Volleyball We have had a very busy fall volleyball season in our gyms! The junior girls’ volleyball team was coached by community coach Megan Lee who did an outstanding job of teaching basic fundamental volleyball skills to our junior girls. She brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm and the team improved tremendously over the course of the season. The girls had the chance to participate in the Pumpkin Bumpkin girls’ volleyball tournament at Mount Doug and played host to the city B finals. We are very proud of this group of young ladies and can’t wait to see them come out to train in the spring for beach volleyball. Thank you to teacher sponsor Danielle Latour for her support. Our senior girls’ volleyball team enjoyed a great deal of success this season. The girls competed in five tournaments and finished in the championship bracket at the Belmont tournament, finished 3rd at the Vic High tournament and finished 2nd at the Ballenas tournament. The team bonded together a great deal during many weekends travelling up and down the island and they were able to win their second consecutive South island 3A title. The team played host to the island championships this year and the girls narrowly missed a berth to the provincial wild card competition, finishing in 6th. We are very proud of this group of outstanding young ladies and wish all the best of luck to our graduating captain, Alexis Shepheard. Go Tikis! -Jean Campbell

Junior Boys Volleyball This year’s Boys Jr Volleyball team picked up where they left off last year and they had a very successful season, finishing 5th in the city and winning sets against the top teams. The core of Grade 10 students, led by captain, Nate Heagle, played very well and they had great help from a number of Grade 9 players, including Karl Gabun. While about half of the team had previous Volleyball experience, a good number were fresh and showed tremendous improvement in just 2 months. Thanks to Head Coach, Mr. Roger Duval, and Assistant Coach, Gabriel Duval, for sharing their enthusiasm and expertise.
