After more than 16 years in the banking industry it was time for me to see and explore something totally different. While I was living in Singapore and Hong Kong for the last six years and travelling a fair bit in many Asian countries, I was keen to experience more of people’s daily live in less developed economies and countries. Knowing about Child’s Dream since 2011, I was curious to learn more about this charity organisation and the Non-Profit- Organisation industry in general. In November 2014 I got the chance to support the Child’s Dream team for seven month in their Chiang Mai office in the capacity as “Volunteer Special Tasks”. What a fantastic team, the staff of Child’s Dream! The moment I step into the office on my first day, I felt very welcomed, all was nicely prepared, and the colleagues were very helpful. In the first few days I could see and feel their passion and strong bond, working as a team to empower marginalised communities in the Mekong Sub-Region to shape their own futures. The culture in this organisation and the great attitude of the colleagues were super infectious and with high motivation I was pleased to contribute: Writing donor proposals and project reports, financial reporting of the 2014 results for the different legal entities, presentations for fundraising activities and special topics, managing the contact database, writing manuals and guidelines for internal applications and procedures, setting up Child’s Dream’s profile for multiple fundraising webpages and crowd funding sites, and some English and German translations became my daily tasks. Not only the broad variety of work but also this opportunity to see behind the scene of Child’s Dream was an unforgettable and invaluable experience. It’s impressive how every single person in Child’s Dream is restless working for such a good cause in such an effective and impactful way. It was an amazing experience for me – coming from the corporate world – to see this perfect balance between professionalism and fun, in such a friendly and supportive team environment. National Children’s Day, Thailand Beside my office tasks I also had the pleasure to help and participate on the Thai Children’s Day. Prepared with games, the Child’s Dream pick-up cars loaded with prizes and gifts for children we headed to the Pha Daeng Luang Primary School. After good four hours drive to this remote area in Thailand, close to the border of Myanmar we found ourselves in small village surrounded by a beautiful landscape, far away from any rural place or city. Most people lived in basic wooden huts and food is cooked on fire. When we arrived to the school some preparation have been done before we could enjoy a good meal for dinner and a night rest in the school’s boarding house. Early in the next morning we started with final decorations for the games before the school kids could start, in groups rotating from one game to the next. Laughter, cheering, friendly competition and happiness all over ... it felt amazing to see all these smiling faces. In such a case all are winners and the prizes – stationaries and sweets – got distributed and shared equally.
