UNIVERSITY CLUBA Message from Board President Mr. Dwight DozierDear Member,

As we begin a new year, I get a chance to reflect on how fortunate we are as members to have access to our University Club -- a chance to enjoy another year of great food, dining, entertain-ment, special events, weddings and business meetings and the company of friends and colleagues. As a founding member, the Chair of the University Club Board of Directors and an Administrator at the University, I have a great appreciation of the asset that the University Club is to our members, the Uni-versity community and our local community as a whole.

As such, it has been one of my missions to make sure we don't take the University Club or you as a member for granted. The Board has been working to enhance the framework to allow us to sustain the current successes of the Club but also move forward. We want to explore new opportunities for engage-ment, new entertainment ideas, new ways to enhance interaction among members and to insure that the value of your membership is fully maximized.

On behalf of the University Club Board of Directors, I want you to know that we are dedicated to insuring that the University Club is relevant to you now and in the future.

Have a great 2014, I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

-Dwight

FEBRUARY 6, 2014

We are starting out the new year with many opportunities to enjoy your membership. Watch for Friday, January 10th as Chef Greg introduces a menu showcasing a new format for seafood night. The noon time Dynamic Women and Trivia Night are scheduled for January 15th and 23rd. For those of you who don't frequent the club you will find dynamic women in our club daily, but it's even more amazing when they gather together for an event.

Chef Greg will be preparing an elaborate southern Italian menu as he teaches you dur-ing Cooking with Class. You should also note a romantic Valentine's evening is scheduled at the Club. There is a game watching party scheduled on January 22nd as the Cards head to South Florida. The members' holiday party was a huge success. This annual party is offered to the members at one of the best values in the entire city.

I have saved the best for last. The Club hosted its 9th Breakfast with Santa for kin-dergartners through third graders at Cochran Elementary School. The Club received regional recognition for our efforts to ensure these underprivileged children have the opportunity to dine in an upscale environment, visit Santa and leave with a gift. I would like to extend a special thanks to Ardie's Bears for donating over 200 teddy bears and the anonymous member who donated funds to help defray the cost of the event. There is such pleasure in giving to these kids that we are already planning on inviting the fourth graders next year. -Bill

PROFESSOR KEITH MOUNTAINThursday, January 9 , 2014 at Noon Stewardship in a Time of Global Climate ChangeKeith Mountain, Professor and Chair of the Department of Geography and Geosciences, will address the issue of how global climate change has become a measurable reality and how humankind has contributed to the observed trends. Given the consequences of shifting climate, it becomes important to merge the social, economic, and political structures so that appropriate strategies will be considered and implemented. This talk will propose some op-tions for environmental management under conditions of change.

“MEET THE PROFESSOR” SPRING 2014

PROFESSOR STEVE YANOVIAK Thursday, February 6, 2014 at NoonBehavior and Ecology of Ants in the Tropical Rainforest CanopySteve Yanoviak, Professor of Biology and Wallace Chair of Conservation, will focus his talk on ants. Ants are conspicuous and diverse in tropical rainforests. While inhabiting tropical treetops, ants face some unique biological and environmental challenges. In his presentation Professor Yanoviak will highlight some amazing aspects of ant behavior, ecology, and evolu-tion that have been discovered in recent years.

PROFESSOR SUZETTE HENKEThursday, March 6, 2014 at NoonVirginia Woolf Among the Lunatics: Women and Mental Illness in the Early 20th Century Why have modern scholars so persistently analyzed Virginia Woolf ’s mental distress as virtu-ally unique – the affliction of a genius set apart from other men and women of the Victorian and Edwardian Age? Suzette Henke, Professor of English and Thruston Morton Chair of Literary Studies, will examine case histories and consider analogies between Woolf ’s reported symptoms and those observed in patients admitted to institutional confinements at the turn of the last century.

PROFESSOR JONGWOO KIM Thursday, April 10, 2014 at NoonThe Nicholsons in Bloomsbury:Painting Edwardian DomesticityWhen in 1906 her family left their old home in Pilgrim’s Lane in Hampstead to move to Mecklenburgh Square, Mabel Nicholson was “not enthusiastic about the address; she had aspirations to Chelsea, which was then the ‘fashionable’ artistic quarter, and was presently to be annoyed with Orpen for labeling his portrait [of her family] ‘Bloomsbury Family.’” The Nicholsons were not, in fact, a “Bloomsbury family,” neither were they the consummate Vic-torian “paterfamilias” sort. Jongwoo Kim, Professor of Art History, examines this paradox of Edwardian domesticity and explores the nuanced images of a man, a woman, and their children who lived in London in the early 20th century.

Admission ($14 per person and $ 7 for students, check or cash) includes lunch. Reservations are required at least 3 days prior to the event. Please contact Janna Tajibaeva at 852-2247 or [email protected]

The University Club hosted the 6th Annual pancake breakfast for Cochran Elementary School children on December 12th and 18th. The Ballroom was filled with laughter and holiday spirit as the University Club staff served the students pancakes, sausage and orange juice. Each child also received a stuffed animal and a goody bag of treats. Santa made his annual appearance and visited with each child. All of us on the staff truly enjoy hosting this event each year as it is our way of giving back to the local community and helping those in need. You can view a video of the festivities on the University of Louisville Youtube page. There are also links on the Club's Facebook and Twitter pages.
