Accredited
by the:
Wayne HealthCare is proud to announce that we have received a 3 year accreditation from the Commission on
Cancer with commendations in all 8 available areas. This is very exciting for us and speaks highly of the dedication
of our physicians, nurses and other dedicated staff that spent hours working on this accreditation for Wayne
HealthCare and the community.
Wayne HealthCare has just completed a two year process to have their cancer program accredited by the American
College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. This accreditation assures the community that they can receive high
quality cancer care close to home.
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1922, the multidisciplinary Commission on Cancer estab-
lishes standards to ensure quality, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive cancer care delivery in health care set-
tings; conducts surveys in health care settings to assess compliance with those standards; collects standardized
data from accredited health care settings to measure cancer care quality; uses data to monitor treatment patterns
and outcomes and enhance cancer control and clinical surveillance activities, and develops effective educational in-
terventions to improve cancer prevention, early detection, cancer care delivery, and outcomes in health care set-
tings.
The Commission on Cancer is a consortium of 50 national professional organizations. Each organization has a
representative(s) on the Commission. These representatives are responsible for setting standards for cancer care
and monitoring the compliance with the standards. Accreditation by the Commission on Cancer is voluntary and
requires strict compliance with the standards. Standards are developed in various aspects of cancer care including
diagnosis, treatment, monitoring quality of care, prevention, early detection, research and education.
Over the last two years, Wayne HealthCare has assembled a team of cancer experts who have developed the Wayne
HealthCare Cancer Program. The program includes multidisciplinary care and provides a complete range of diag-
nostic, treatment, and supportive services. In addition, even though Wayne HealthCare isnt mandated to provide
national clinical trials, we have joined the Dayton Clinical Oncology Program and offer cancer patients national
clinical trials through a grant from the National Cancer Institute.
Wayne HealthCare has the expertise to provide you and your loved ones with the very best in cancer care.

HEALTHAWARENESS
Theres nothing likeyour favorite chocolatesor sweet treats after ahectic day. Americans lovesweets so much that theyare less than resolute whenit comes to passing themup, despite the potentialtoll on how they fit intofavorite outfits.
One in five Americanscall themselves failureswhen it comes to sweettemptations, according toa survey conducted by theCorn Refiners Association(CRA). In fact, 28 percentrefuse to choose between
looking trim in clothingand enjoying their favoritefoods, according to thestudy. And 40 percent ofthe women questionedwould opt for less revealingoutfits rather than giveup sweets, while just 35percent said they would tryto cut back on treats.
Fortunately, there is asimpler, healthier solution:maintain a healthy lifestyleand enjoy sweets inmoderation.
Youcan enjoysweets if youconsider yourtotal caloriepicture forthe day.Think aboutwhat yourechoosing toeat based onhow muchphysicalactivity youllbe gettingsays Kristine Clark, Ph.D.,R.D., and Director ofSports Nutrition at Penn
State University. Try hardto eat well balanced mealsand exercise 30 minutes aday. Then if you feel like asweet, enjoy it!
Here are some tipsfrom Dr. Clark on how tohave your chocolate andstill face yourself in themirror:
* Calories always count.Dont think a bite hereor there doesnt matter. The calories in itty bittybites could add up to
500 or more,dependingon theirfrequency.
* Sugar issugar. Sincecaloriescount, whenyou wantsomethingsweet, budgetfor it andenjoy. Butremember, nomatter where
sugar comes from -- corn, cane, beets or bees -- thecalories are the same and
the body handles thesesugars the same.
* Pretend savingcalories is saving money. If you dont go out forlunch today you mightsave money and 500-700 calories. By bringinglunch instead, you controlcalories, can add morefruits and veggies, andsave cash.
* Think of calories inexercise equivalents. Forexample, if you know
eating a second serving ofpasta is 400 calories andyou also know 400 caloriescan be burned by walkingor jogging four miles, thenyou might decide not tohave the extra serving. You might opt for an extraserving of salad for anexercise cost of only 150calories or 1.5 miles ofwalking or jogging.
* Dont starve yourselfor under-eat to the pointyoure grouchy. Eatingis important, even whenlosing weight. Eat sensiblyin the morning, allowing
for a mid-morning veggiesnack. Then eat a reallunch, such as a sandwich, fruit, and a cup of lowfat yogurt. Allow for anafternoon fruit snack andalways eat dinner.
Its all about moderationwhen it comes to yourfavorite sweet treats andstaying healthy and active.

Dieting Dilemma: Can You Still Eat Sweets?
There are two types ofcholesterol, one that can makethe arteries less flexible andtherefore make a person moresusceptible to heart attackor stroke; and the other thatactually protects against heartattack.
Cholesterol cannot dissolvein the blood, which means it hasto be transported to and fromthe cells by carriers knownas lipoproteins. Low-densitylipoproteins, or LDL, areconsidered bad cholesterol. When too much bad cholesterolis circulating in the blood, LDLcan slowly build up on the innerwalls of the arteries, possibly
even teaming with othersubstances to form plaque, athick, hard deposit that narrowsthe arteries and makes them less
flexible.High-density lipoprotein,
or HDL, is whats consideredgood cholesterol. Thatsbecause medical experts feelHDL carries cholesterol awayfrom the arteries and back tothe liver, where cholesterol isthen passed from the body. Inaddition, some experts also feelHDL removes excess cholesterolfrom arterial plaque, slowing itsbuildup as a result. And thoughcholesterol is commonly, andfalsely, considered a dirty word, low levels of HDL actuallyincrease a persons risk of heartdisease.
A simple blood test can help
men and women learn theirHDL and LDL levels, and ifthey need to make any changesto get on the right track.
Good and Bad CholesterolThe image many peopleget when they think of heart
conditions is a grown mancluthing his chest. But notall heart conditions are asobvious or pronounced asheart attack.
Ischemia is a term usedto describe the restrictionof oxygen-rich blood to anarea of the body. Cardiacischemia occurs when theblood cannot reach theheart.
Generally cardiacischemia causes pain in thechest, known as angina. However, in some casesthere is no warning pain and
the condition is called silentischemia.
Facts & Figures on SilentIschemia
Silent ischemia affectsroughly 3 to 4 millionAmericans every year.Individuals who have hada previous heart attack areat higher risk for silentischemia than others. Butthere are many other riskfactors:
* Diabetes* Coronary artery
disease* Hypertension* Coronary artery
anomalies* Smoking* Obesity* Alcohol and drug abuse* Cardiomyopathy
If ischemia lasts too longor is especially severe, itmay cause a heart attack. Itcan also affect the naturalrhythm of the heart and itspumping ability, which can
cause fainting, and evensudden cardiac arrest.
Silent ischemia has nosymptoms. However, if aperson has had previousepisodes of chest pain, theres a likelihood thathe or she could also beexperiencing silent ischemiaand not know it. Doctors mayuse an exercise stress test todetermine silent ischemia. Also, a special monitorcalled a Holter monitorwill record the heart rateand rhythm over the courseof a day and determine ifischemia occurred.
The main ways to treat
silent ischemia is to reducecertain behaviors thatincrease risk. This includesquitting smoking, avoidingalcohol and maintaining ahealthy weight and diet.
For those who arediagnosed with silentischemia, there are sometreatment options available. Most of these involveimproving blood flow to theheart, which often requiresprescription medications.Oxygen also may be given toincrease the oxygen contentof the blood that is reachingthe heart. Other people maytake medicines that relax
blood vessels, enablingmore blood to flow. Inmost cases this is all that isneeded to fix the situation. For those not responding totreatment, they may needa percutaneous coronaryintervention (PCI), suchas balloon angioplasty, coronary artery bypasssurgery, or a similarprocedure.
Heart Conditions Can Be Silent
Everyone knows the eyesare the windows to the soul, but few people realize theyare also windows to youroverall health, allowing eyedoctors to see signs of chronicconditions.
The eyes are the onlyplace doctors can get aclear view of blood vessels, which can be significantlyaltered by conditions suchas high cholesterol, high
blood pressure, heart diseaseand diabetes. In fact, aneye exam can often preventcomplications from conditionslike diabetes, by catchingproblems early.
With this in mind, familiesare being encouraged to getannual comprehensive eyeexams.
What gives eye doctorsthe advantage over other
specialists? By examining thecornea, retina, and the flow ofblood through vessels aroundthe eye, eye doctors can detectsigns of health problems, including blood vesselleakage, retinal swelling andfatty deposits on the retina.
This early detectioncan help prevent and treatmany conditions. For thisreason, comprehensive eyeexams by optometrists andophthalmologists are aboutmore than simply determiningif you need glasses. Theyre away to detect signs of seriousconditions, such as diabetesand vascular diseases.
People who may or may notknow they have diabetes oftenvisit their eye doctors first, because theyre experiencingsudden changes in vision due
to fluctuations in their bloodsugar.
The National Eye Instituteestimates that more than 4million people over the age of40 have diabetic retinopathy, acondition marked by damage tothe blood vessels in the retina, says Susan Egbert, Directorof Eye Health Managementat VSP Vision Care. Thiscondition can lead to blindnessif not treated early.
However, with annual eyeexaminations, 90 percent ofall diabetes-related blindnesscan be prevented. Remember, diabetes is a disease thataffects the whole body. Its not
enough to know you have it;you have to prevent and treatits complications as well.
Everyone, even children, needs to get an eye exam everyyear to make sure his or hereyes are healthy. If you donthave insurance that coverseyecare and eyewear, lookinto a vision plan, such as VSPVision Care, the largest not-for-profit vision care companyin the country with a networkof 27,000 private practicedoctors.
