July 2020
Hello Fellow Rock Chippers,
I hope everyone is still safe, and healthy. As we all are getting used to a
new norm in our lives, it also trickles down to our beloved meetings. I’m
sure we will all meet face to face one day soon with many rocky quarantine
stories.
For the month of June we had our board and general meetings online, us-
ing Zoom. Im happy to say that we had over 22 members join us for our
online general meeting. Thank you Thalia for part two of a very informative
program.
I hope to see more of you on our next “gathering”. Our next board meeting
will take place on July 11th at 7pm and our next general meeting will take
place on July 18th at 7pm.
With blessing to everyone, have a happy and safe 4th of July!
Sagi Salomon

If anyone is missed, please let us know!
Thank you to everyone that has volunteered to bring refreshments to our meetings. We will make adjustments as necessary if and when it is safe to schedule our meetings. We hope everyone stays safe and happy meanwhile.
The Refreshment Chairman is Shanna O’Brien
Ways and Means, Library, and Refreshments, have nothing to report for July. That will not be changing for now, or any time soon. Webmaster reports that Thalia and John are working together and have gotten to the point that we can keep the site updated by linking on Zoom. We want to encourage members to attend to Zoom meetings and keep current on what we are able to present at this time.
Library Library is still closed while the Covid-19 crisis continues. We will reopen when we can have meet-ings again.
Shanna

Secretary,
Jewelry Boxes
I was wondering if you could help jog my memory. I was describing the gemstone Jew-elry Boxes the husband wife team used to display at your show. I thought the last name was Rosen but I can't find any web hits for the jewelry boxes with that. She was the Lapidary and he was the silversmith. They had one box that was Rutilated Quartz with etched Basenite or black Jade, another with a large Ammonite top center off the box lid on Turritella agate box. Was amazing work. I am sure with your immense knowledge you might remember them. Fred Ward

Our First Virtual Online Program At the May and June meetings we had a slide show program It was a first attempt at using the zoom process for this type of event. We hope that we will find other programs for the future. Looks like this was a success. Here are some of the reactions to that event.
"It was a nice, simple, easily understood program. Maybe 45-60 minutes long with some pictures to show each step in making of Channel jewelry. A time consuming process because of all the small pieces and planning needed. But not quite as complicated as one might think unless your design contains really small pieces or small design elements. Some-thing to think about as a Covid-19 project for those who are looking for something to do right now."
"The May demo for creating channel silver work was extremely detailed and informative. We learned quite a bit from that. The June demo for the actual stone sizing for inlay was not as detailed, yet it put the theory of cutting the stones out there. The virtual program worked great.
Looking forward to the next one. Much thanks".
"Excellent teaching session - the right pace and level of details to make it sound attractive and just a bit challenging! "
ABOUT THE SHOW We have a confirmed date of October 17, 2020 with the First United Methodist Church in West Hills. Before the pandemic event of Covid19 we paid for our space and had started our plans. April is the month for contracts to go out and start the ball rolling to have a good show. So this year instead of sending out contracts we asked our vendors if they would do our show if the pandemic allowed. We had an immediate YES response from 10 vendors, all from past years of doing our show. They were advised about the possibility of the show being cancelled, and therefore contracts would be held up until the middle of September. In the meantime there is still the need for publicity and that has already started. Westways and CFMS have been notified and Mining Journal and Rock & Gen are next come in July. The flyers and raffle tickets will be available also. It is time for the membership to start getting their prizes done for the raffle. The prize needs to be super sagifrajilistic this year so we can get publicity out on what we have to raffle and get people to want to come to a show that will be safe and worthwhile. The publicity part will be getting pictures taken of the prizes to advertise with the show announcement. Prizes should be of a value of at least $20.00 and something you would want, making it desirable to someone to want to buy a raffle ticket. This is one of the ways the show is a money-maker for the organization. Sagi is the show chairman, I hope all will offer their assistance to him as it can be a daunting task for the first few times. Offer early so you can do the area of your expertise. Virginia

Woodland Hills Rock Chippers, Incorporated
Our organization, a non-profit corporation, was formed for educational and instructive purposes: to foster collection and study of minerals, to disseminate knowledge about them, to sponsor field trips to find them, to encourage the use of them in lapidary and faceting studies, etc. And to have one whale of a good time doing those things with all of our friends. Regular meetings are held on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Re-freshments are at 6:30 p.m. Field trips are at various times throughout the month. Guests are always welcome to attend. Membership is open to interested applicants after they have attended at least two meetings. Annual dues are due in November for the following year.
