our list up-to-date. Contact Arla Allen or anyone on the Prayer
Team with your updates. Thank you!
We Care Card Ministry Have you ever received a greeting card from the Women’s Team Ministry? If you have, you will recog-nize the logo that is on the back of each card. Do you wonder who makes these fitting cards? Heidi Leiendecker and Megan Swander are the primary card designers.
The making is only the first step to this “We Care Card Ministry.” The second step is the choosing, addressing and mailing of the cards. That is done by Wanda Zuber who comes in each Tuesday morning to check the prayer list and prepare the cards to be sent.
Special thanks to all who help make this ministry possible by show-ing that the people of First Church are a caring congregation.

“I feel that it really brings something to me to be involved in what the church does.” That is how Ron Allison responded when the sleuth asked him why he, his wife Brenda, and chil-dren, Brad, Kayla, and Eden, are willing to give so much time to the life of our church. “I guess it began when I started as a helper in the fifth grade Sunday School class with Jana Thompson,” remembers Ron. That was a year or two before Brad, who is now a freshman at Mt. Vernon Nazarene College, was in the class. “I moved on
to 6th grade and taught there for two years,” he continued. He and Brenda then became involved as helpers with the Youth Group. “It was about the time that J.C. Collins left and Jana became the Youth Director.” Ron recalls with fondness the times spent not only with young people (several of whom he recalled by name), but also with the other adult volunteers, Becky Wells, Fred Pond, and Jim & Val Weber. It is now seven years later and the Allison family is still immersed in youth work. That youth work includes three mis-sion trips. The first was to Jackson County,
by Al Arnold
If you have been inspired by the Sleuth Reports these past months, you might be wondering how you too might become share the God given talents or gifts you have. Since we do not know everyone’s gifts, we need you to help us out here. If there is something you see that needs to be done, please let us know. If you are willing to do that “something,” even better! Call Susan if you have any ideas. (419-238-0631, X 4) Here are “somethings” you might consider: ♦ Data entry— creating a library card catalog on computer ♦ Clean and disinfect the nursery ♦ Clean the pop corn popper in the Starlight Theater ♦ Read to the Weekday Preschool children ♦ Share a passion/hobby you have for something with our preschool ♦ Help with a party or special event for children or youth ♦ Prepare a meal for a family with a new baby or special circumstances ♦ Office help—newsletter preparations, “manning” the office for Marilyn
Ohio where the group painted a house and built a handicap ramp. In 2006 the group traveled to Washington for the D.C.–L.A. Youth Specialists Convention. The most re-cent trip was to West Virginia to side a house. “I just love being around the kids. I learn as much from them as they do from me,” Ron enthused. Ron and his family con-tinue to enjoy those experiences partly be-cause of the fresh approach brought by Rev-erend Exman. “He relates well with the youth and is able to lead discussions into personal subjects that are crucial to a rela-tionship with Christ,” Ron explained. Upon initial contact with Ron, the sleuth learned that he would be at the church all that Sunday. The Allisons had arrived in time for Sunday School and for Ron to run the sound board for the 9:15 ser-vice. They had worshipped at 10:45 and were preparing to help set up for the Mes-siah Performance that evening. Ron sang a bass part this year. Ron has accepted the responsibility to schedule people at the sound board for all the Contemporary Wor-ship Services, often runs the computer for the Song Show Plus software, and once a month stays after the last worship service to edit the video-tapes for the midweek TV broadcasts.
The sleuth believes Ron when he says, “The more I give, the more I get.”

W ould you join me (Jana) in reading the entire Bible this year? It doesn’t take a lot of time and you will dis-cover more about your faith than you thought possible! To help us in this adventure, I’ve created a Blog entitled
“Let’s Read For A Year!” What’s a blog? A Blog is an on-line journal where you can respond at your leisure to the thoughts posted. Each week (probably on Thursday) I will write about the up-coming week’s readings. I will suggest some study hints, some reflection questions and maybe a prayer or two. I invite you to do the read-ings and share your thoughts and insights with others on the blog. Here is the address for the blog:
http://letsreadforayear.blogspot.com We will use the classic reading plan on http://biblestudy.crosswalk.com/. Go to this site and click on the “Bible In A Year” tab. From there you will choose a plan (Classic), you can choose a translation and a start date. The site will bring up the daily read-ings for you on the screen and chart your progress if you like. Or you can print out the chart and do the readings as you like. Our start date for this task is January 4, 2008. However, you can start at any time. Just pick a day and begin!
R eading on the computer doesn’t appeal to you? Ok, then follow the chart posted each month in the Friendly Visitor. (see below). A monthly chart will be inserted in the bulletin. If you want the study ques-tions, call me and we will find a way for you to share in the questions. I hope you will accept this invitation to a year long journey with the scriptures. It’s a sure way to grow your faith!

Teens and Parents and Everyone else, Happy New Year! We have a lot of things going on this year…Confirmation will start on Sunday January 18th, so for all of you in the 7th grade get excited about that. (Hint…we are working on something new this year so look for you letter in the next few weeks!) Also IMPACT will start back on the 14th. We just finished up a great year of youth ministry at FUMC. I am so proud of all the kids for their spiritual growth and excitement for having a closer relationship with their Savior. Because of this growth I thought what better way to start the new year than to hear from one of the youth. So here is Katie Thompson, a junior from Crestview…
Holy cow, I can’t believe that it’s just about 2009. That’s mind-blowing. Are you ready for the new year? People are get-ting ready in all sorts of different ways. Some are making new year resolutions, others are thinking about what’s lying ahead in life for them, and still others are just letting life take them where ever. The youth group has prepared for the new year in a different way. We sat down a few days ago and prayed for just about three hours. We went over a little in our time limit, but it was truly a wonder-ful experience. We each went around to everyone there and either prayed for them out loud or said a silent prayer for them. Everyone who went got something out of it… whether it was through tears or through new thoughts coming into their minds to think about. It was our way of preparing for the new year. It helped a lot now, and only God knows how much it will help in the future. Prayers are wonderful things and I encourage you if you haven’t in a while, to pray for your friends and family. Maybe get a group together and say some prayers. Lord knows that it’s going to be an interesting year for many of us so the more prayers the better. J I’m going to say one now and know that I’ll be praying for everyone in the coming year. Lord, I ask that you be with the coming year. It’s going to be challenging for many of us with the economy as it is and what not. Please bring us closer together as a church and help us lean on each other through the good times and the bad. Thank you for all the joy you have brought us and will bring us in the new year. Amen

This and That
Since we have the technology to post the newsletter on line, and due to the economy, we are trying to cut costs where we can. Beginning May, 2009, the Friendly Visitor will no longer be bulk mailed. You are able to print and/or read the newsletter from our web site each month. If you do not have a computer, a printed copy of the newsletter will be available for you to pick up at the church each month or you may request to have a copy sent to you. We will only mail to those persons requesting that we do so. Thank you for your co-operation in this change.
I will read the newsletter on line and save the printing and mailing costs I would like to continue to receive the Friendly Visitor through the mail after May, 2009.

Angel Tree 2008 On behalf of Sarah Group I would like to thank every-
one who participated in Angel Tree 2008. We served
around 30 families which is over 60 chil-dren this year. This was my first year on deliveries and it truly is a blessing to go and see these families and the children. They really appreciate what we do at First Church to help these children have a Merry Christmas. We did run out of angels early this year and we are sorry if there was any-one who was not able to partici-pate. Next year not only will we have Angels for purchasing the clothing and toy gift, but we are planning on having Angels to purchase children Christian books that we send to these families as well. Please continue to support us with your help and prayers for Angel Tree 2009. Happy New Year and God Bless. Delda McHugh
A new column will appear in upcoming newsletters look-ing back on the people, places and events that took place at First Church. David Leiendecker will be con-tributing these articles. If you have a remembrance of the past that would be of interest to members of the congregation, please let David know. The first “newspaper” was published on July 7, 1956. The weekly publication consisting of one double sided 11 x 14 issue. A contest was held to name the newspaper. The publications committee selected “The Friendly Visitor” from the list of around 30 suggestions. The winning name was submitted by Mr. And Mrs. Claud Perry. From the July 25, 1956 issue, we read, “...it is a fit-ting name, reflecting as it does the fact that this newspaper hopes to be a regular “visitor” for your church to your home and that we like to think of our church as “Friendly First.” For many years, this inscription appeared below the address plates:
“OLD FIRST CHURCH IS A FRIENDLY CHURCH.” I trust that is still true today. Dr. Paul D. Childs was pastor at that time. Phyllis Gehres was the church secretary. The cost per week to mail the newspaper was $10.00.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: “And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners’, expecting to be re-
paid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back.
Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High , because he is kind to the ungrateful and
wicked. Be merciful, just as your father is merciful.” Luke 6:34-36. (Give as though you are giving to God.)
