ORMS Mission

Oklahoma Road Middle School provides an envi-ronment of respect and

collaboration where stu-dents develop skills and knowledge to become

responsible citizens and persevere through challenging

learning opportunities.

Dear Parents, We are looking forward to school and want to make sure the year starts in the right way. Please carefully read the following information to be well informed about school related issues that your student will encounter. Student schedules are for the most part complete and will go “LIVE” on the Home Access Center (HAC) on August 15. If you have never accessed HAC, please go to the CCPS Homepage and find the link for HAC on the bottom left. If you have used HAC previously, you may need to request or change your password. If you encoun-ter problems, please call the main office for assistance.

A few things to keep in mind about schedules: Some students have had homeroom and/or team assignments changed since team

assignments were emailed a few weeks ago. We apologize for any inconven-ience, but with a large number of new enrollees in the past two weeks, we had to make adjustments. If your child changed teams, please use already purchased supplies and do not worry with buying anything else.

Our class sizes have grown almost daily. While we are still in good shape, we have some very large classes. Schedule change requests for reasons other than academic needs can’t be made.

Newly enrolled students may still have holes in their schedule, but these will be filled in the very near future.

Most importantly – the schedule that posts when HAC is live on August 15 is the correct schedule.

Volunteering is a great way to get involved at ORMS and can be done in a num-ber of different ways. Volunteer training will be completely online this year and managed by Central Office. In the near future a link will be posted on the CCPS home page as well as the ORMS home page.

Character Education is a way of life here at ORMS. We have been recognized as a State School of Character for 5 consecutive years and want to keep that streak alive. To do so, we need our entire school community to show Respect for themselves and others, be Responsible for our actions and demonstrate Resiliency when working through difficult situations. There are a number of other Character Traits that are equally important, but the Three R’s will help us start the year in the right direction.

The following person has been designated to handle inquiries regarding the non-discrimination policies:

Principal’s Message continued . . . Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a CCPS system initiative to allow students to bring their own electronic devices for educational purposes. At ORMS, students may bring their own devices, but the usage of devices is limited to classrooms only, at the individual teachers’ discretion. This means devices may not be used for non-instructional purposes at any time, including in the hallways, cafeteria or any other non-classroom area. De-vices may be used on buses, at the bus drivers’ discretion. Devices MUST be out of sight and silent when not in use.

Fidgets and Spinners are considered toys, are prohibited in all areas of the building from entry through dis-missal, and will be confiscated for parent pick up. While some students may require an item to maintain fo-cus; our counselors, administrators or Special Education staff will work with those students to identify appro-priate items that do not create noise or distractions to others.

Food and Drinks may not be consumed in the hallways. Water in a clear plastic bottle may be carried and consumed throughout the school day, including classrooms, without a doctor’s note. Bottles that are not clear are not permitted. Glass bottles are never permitted, not even in lunch bags. Students may bring “fast-food” type food or drink to breakfast, but the items must be consumed and discarded in the cafeteria. Food items and non-conforming containers observed outside of the cafeteria will be confiscated and possibly discarded. The remainder of this newsletter has an enormous amount of information and dates that are important. Please read it carefully, and we hope to see you at one of our Back to School Nights. With Regards, Mr. Brilhart, Principal

Home Access Center 2017-2018

Home Access Center is Carroll County Public Schools’ parent portal. It allows parents/guardians to login and view informa on pertaining to their child. The Home Access Center is provided for the express use of the parents of Carroll County Public School District students to assist in the communica on of important educa onal informa on. The goal of the Home Access Center is to assist you in effec vely communica ng with the teachers, staff, and administra on about your student. Parents can each have their own user name and password. They do not need to share an account. If both parents provided the same email address on the emergency card, then they will have one login to Home Access Center using that email address as their user name. Go to the Carroll County Public Schools’ website at www.carrollk12.org and click the Home Access Center link located in the ‘Quick Links’ sec on. There is also a link on the ORMS website www.carrollk12.org/oms Unfortunately, you must have an email address in order to have a Home Access Center account. If you have changed your email address, you must no fy your child’s school so they can update the system and your Home Access Center account.

Page 5: Volume 20, Issue 1 ORMS Twister Talk 17 Newsletter.pdf · ORMS Twister Talk Volume 20, Issue 1 August/September 2017 Erin Brilhart, Principal Oklahoma Road Middle School 410-751-3600

BOOK BAGS Students may use book bags to transport books to and from school; however, students must leave their book bags in their lockers during the school day. This is for the safety of all students and staff. Students will be given sufficient opportunities to visit their locker throughout the day so that they will not need to carry all of their books. These locker visit times will be determined by each individual team. Students can carry gym bags or small plastic bags for their gym clothes.

STUDENT AGENDA/HANDBOOK

The first day of school all students will receive an Agenda/Handbook courtesy of the PTA. This book will contain information specific to Oklahoma Road Middle School and is a place to write daily assignments. Students must carry this book with them to each class and home each night. If the handbook is lost, replacements are available for a fee of $5.00. Supplies are limited so students are encouraged to know where their handbook is at all times. In addition, 6th Grade students will receive the Carroll County Public School Student/Parent Handbook and an Oklahoma Road Middle School folder. You will find these documents very helpful in answering questions about policies and procedures. The handbook is also available on the CCPS website.

EMERGENCY CARDS On the first day of school each student will receive only one (1) copy of his/her emergency card. Parents of returning 7th and 8th grade students will find a great deal of their children’s information preprinted on the card. It is critical the preprinted information is carefully reviewed by a parent/guardian. If the card reflects incorrect information you are asked to make note of the revisions on the card. All emergency cards must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to the school, within three (3) school days. In addition, it is extremely important for parents to update their child’s information throughout the school year. This can be done by providing written documentation to the school. A change of residence, however, will require proper documentation. This accurate information will allow the school nurse, guidance counselors, team leaders, administrators and classroom teachers to have the accurate information needed to remain in close communication with parents and guardians.

Thank you, in advance, for your prompt attention to this procedure!

CHANGE OF ADDRESS State and County attendance regulations require the school to maintain accurate up to date enrollment information for each student; therefore, when you have a change of address it is mandatory you provide the school with one of the following:

A signed lease/rental agreement on a home/apartment in which the parent/legal guardian is currently residing

A current rent receipt

A recent utility bill

A mortgage statement/bill

A signed settlement document

A Property tax bill from the current fiscal year indicating “primary residence”

A Deed

A Residence Verification Statement accompanied by an acceptable proof of residence, as indicated above for the owner/leasee of the property

Real Property Data Search Report listing parent/guardian name and “principal residence”.

Without proof of residency, we are unable to change your address. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

GYM UNIFORM

All students must wear a gym uniform during P.E. class consisting of a gray t-shirt, black gym shorts and gym shoes.

Students will have an opportunity to purchase an ORMS gym uniform the first week of school through our Physical Education Department. The cost will be $10.00 for the shirt, $7.00 for the shorts.

Gym uniforms will also be available for purchase for 6th graders at the 6th Grade Back to School Night on August 30th.

VISITORS TO THE BUILDING

All visitors must ring the main entrance buzzer to request entry must show a valid photo identification card before a visitor’s badge is issued in the office. The practice of returning to school/lockers after normal office house is no longer allowed. Thank you in advance for your patience!

Page 6: Volume 20, Issue 1 ORMS Twister Talk 17 Newsletter.pdf · ORMS Twister Talk Volume 20, Issue 1 August/September 2017 Erin Brilhart, Principal Oklahoma Road Middle School 410-751-3600

TRANSPORTATION

The Transportation Services Department (TSD) is pleased to announce that regular education school bus routes will be delivered to schools and posted on the CCPS website beginning August 15. Estimated pick up and drop off times for every bus stop (a.m. and p.m.) will be provided as a feature of our bus routing software, Transfinder. All times are estimates and parents should be encouraged to have their student(s) at the bus stop at least 10 minutes prior to the listed pick up time for the first week of school. Bus routes will continue to be updated on the CCPS website through the first month of school. If you have questions regarding your child’s bus route please contact the Transportation Services Department at 410-751-3229. *BUS RIDERS Students riding buses should arrive at their designated bus stops at least ten minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time. Students must ride the same bus to and from school each day. They must also get on and off at the same bus stop each day. Permission to ride a bus other than a student’s assigned bus is only granted in emergency situations. Permission to ride a different bus can be granted only by the school’s administration. Both sets of parents must submit these requests in writing and in advance. Further, a written request from a parent or guardian is required whenever a student will be traveling home by a means different than what is typical for that student (i.e., walking home instead of taking the bus, parent pick up, etc.). These requests must be sent to the office first thing in the morning for administrative approval. *WALKERS and PARENT PICK-UP All walkers and bike riders crossing Oklahoma Road are to cross at the crosswalk located at the north entrance of the school parking lot. Students entering from the back of the school should follow the blacktop path from Hemlock Drive. Students will not be allowed to cross Rt. 26 unless a letter of permission from a parent or guardian is on file in the school office. For safety reasons, it is always a good idea for students to walk with a friend using only the sidewalks and/or pathways provided. At no time should students “cut” across or be on private property without the owner’s permission to do so. Parent pick-up and drop-off will continue to be at the parking lot to the right of the school. For the safety of all students, please be patient and follow the instructions of the designated school staff at this location. Student drop-off or pick-up is not permitted in the front parking lot between 7:45 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. and 2:50 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. due to bus traffic in this area at these times.

BUS RIDER INFORMATION Video/audio cameras are placed on school buses to protect students and staff and to provide for a safe and orderly environment. The privacy of students and the recording are kept secure and are reviewed only by the authorized Carroll County Public School Personnel.

ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL TIMES

Please understand that students should not arrive before 7:55 a.m. because there is no super-vision available prior to this time. Morning homeroom officially starts at 8:20 a.m. Students arriving after 8:20 a.m. will be marked TARDY. The first class period begins at 8:25 a.m.

Dismissal will be as follows:

3:00pm – First wave and walkers only will be dismissed. 3:03pm – Parent pick-up students will be dismissed to the parking lot to the right of the school. 3:05pm – Second wave will be dismissed. 3:10pm – Third wave will be dismissed.

(Once the school year begins, the times may vary due to unanticipated changes in transportation routes. Future news-letters will provide updated information.)

One AM and one PM stop location shall be allowed for each transport-

ed student. Exceptions will be made only in case of an emergency or

when an extenuating circumstance exists and shall be approved by the

Principal.

Parents are responsible for the supervision of students while walking to

or from school or while walking to, from, or waiting at the bus stop.

Pupils may not ride buses other than those to which they are regularly

assigned, without approval by the principal, following a written request

by the parent.

SERVICE-LEARNING INFORMATION

The Service-Learning Graduation Requirement requires students to earn a minimum of 75 service-learning hours prior to graduation from high school. Students in Carroll County can begin earning service-learning hours the summer after fifth grade and have until their senior year to accumulate their hours. JUNIORS must have a minimum of 55 service-learning hours by the end of their JUNIOR year in order to have SENIOR status. Students earn hours for service-learning activities within designated courses as outlined in the Carroll County Service-Learning Guidelines as well as by independently volunteering in the community. Remember the following guidelines when choosing a volunteer opportunity:

You may not be paid for your service. You may not earn service-learning hours providing service to a for-profit business. (Nursing Homes are an

exception.) You may not earn service-learning hours for service in preparation for a worship service, or during a worship service

or religious education activity. Service, such as helping with church dinners and mission work, is acceptable. Fulfilling family obligations, i.e., babysitting, grass cutting etc. is not acceptable. Service-Learning Reflection Forms must be completed and returned to the school within ONE YEAR from the time

the service is completed. Service-Learning forms can be found by accessing the following website: http://carrollk12.org/Assets/file/Student%20Services/Service_Learning/reflect_form.pdf If you are not sure whether an activity will count towards the Service-Learning Requirement, please contact Mrs. Bankard at ORMS, or the county coordinator at 410-751-3097.

CONSENT AND RELEASE

Permission to Photograph, Videotape or Audiotape

Throughout the school year, the Carroll County Public School System frequently covers school activities and may use your child’s photograph, video image, or voice for educational, informational, or public relations purposes, with or without identification by name.

If you do not wish to have your child’s voice reproduced on tape or to have his/her image appear in such things as a video, a photograph, or the school website, please notify the school principal in writing. It is assumed that parents and guardians consent to their children being audiotaped, photographed, videotaped, or having their image placed on a school website by the school system unless such notification is received.

There are also occasions when the media cover certain school events (such as when a government leader visits a school). If you do not wish to have your child’s name or likeness published by the media, you should address your concerns directly to the school involved so that the media is so advised. Please be advised that the school system has no control over the media when they are covering activities such as sporting events and musical programs that are open to the public.

Use of Student Work on Websites or in Publications

The Carroll County Public School System recognizes that it may not claim ownership rights, property rights, or the copyright to student work. However, there may be times throughout the year when the school system wishes to display student work on school websites or in publications. If you do not wish to have your child’s art, poetry, writing, etc. appear on school websites or in publications, please notify the school principal in writing. It is assumed that parents and guardians consent to their child’s work being displayed on school websites or in publications unless such notification is received.

ACCESS TO ONLINE MEDIA RESOURCES

Students have access to Destiny, our Media Center Catalog, from home. Just go to https://destiny.carrollk12.org/ and select Oklahoma Road. Important research

resources and databases can be accessed from the same site.

If you anticipate your child needing medications during school hours, please be sure to fill out a medication permission form appropriately and have an authorized adult bring the medication to school. CCPS prohibits any students transporting medication to school. Please be aware that any medications, except Advil and Tylenol, must have a doctor’s order for the medication to be administered in school. Doctor’s orders are also required if you wish to give your child any other dosage than what is recommended by the manufacturer. This would include giving a child under the age of 12 adult strength Advil and Tylenol, or giving a higher than recommended dosage. Please remember that any medications not picked up from last year were destroyed and medication order forms are only good for one year. New medication forms must be completed each year and may be obtained at school or on the CCPS website at www.carrollk12.org/instruction/studentservices/health/forms/default.asp. If you have urgent or serious medical concerns, please contact your school nurse.

If you are without medical care, the Carroll County Health Department can help. They provide many services for free or at reduced fees. Some services include free immunizations, reduced-fee dental programs, physician services, women’s health and prevention programs. Contact the school nurse for further information or call the Carroll County Health Department at (410) 857-5000; they are a great resource for our community.

Although physicals are not required for school entrance, they are encouraged to be done every year. If your child has had a recent physical, please have an updated copy sent to school for your child’s records, so the school system can better serve him/her.

As you are filling out the Emergency Cards, please do not neglect to fill out all medical information on the card, including your physician and dentist. This information is to benefit your child if he/she should need medical services at school or if your child needs to be transported to a medical facility.

Hope you had a great summer!

Once that's worked out, the schedule for the remainder of the year will be provided. We're looking forward to meeting you, and working together for another great year! Lisa DeMola PTA President

Back to School means that it is time for the annual ORMS PTA Membership Drive! The ORMS PTA is responsible for many of the programs that support your students – from providing agenda books to each student to help them stay organized to cultural programs that support the curriculum in new and interesting ways. The PTA also provides manpower and financial support to numerous school events. What does it mean to be a PTA member? Often, people are reluctant to join the PTA because they don’t have the time to get involved. By sending in your dues, you are supporting ORMS PTA. You are not obligated to attend meetings, although everyone is certainly welcome, and you will not be asked to join a committee, although there are many options for those of you who want to get involved. PTA membership is school specific so any membership fees you pay only go to ORMS. Any fees you may have paid for the PTA at another school do not go to ORMS. That means if you want to support both schools you need to join the PTA at each school. To support ORMS PTA just complete the form below, include your membership dues (cash or check made out to ORMS PTA), fold it in half, tape it up, and bring it to Back to School Night or send it in to school with your child. Please take a moment and join the ORMS PTA to make a positive difference in your child’s future. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lisa Demola @ [email protected] or 410-549-3337.

ORMS PTA Membership - $10 for a single membership, or $15 for two memberships.

The success of our volunteer program depends on the generous donations of time and talent that the par-ents and grandparents give to ORMS. We realize that some of you may be able to commit to giving several hours a week, while others may not be in a position to donate time, but are more than willing to donate snacks or paper goods for an event.
