Students Earn Internship at Eli Lilly Daijah Jones (left) and Krishala Walker (right) are having a

busy summer. They began their internship with Eli Lilly as part of

their Administrative Co-Operative Education Program (ACOE) this

July. They will continue the program throughout their senior year,

The program is designed to host young people involved in businesses

classes and give them a professional experience in the corporate

world. Daijah and Krishala both has to submit resumes, transcripts

and attendance records to earn the opportunity to interview. They

were then required to interview at the Lilly corporate center and were

among a group of students from a variety of Marion County schools.

They will serve Lilly well and be great students representatives of

Walker Career Center.

Letter from the Director As I reflect over the past eight years as the Director of Walker Career

Center, I have a sense of pride. It has been a wonderful chapter in my career in

part because of all the great teachers, staff and students who have touched my

life.

I came to the career center eighteen years ago as a guidance counselor.

I was eager to learn about all the great things that Walker had to offer. In a very

short time, I realized that ―great things‖ were abundant at the Walker Career

Center.

Over the past few years, we have added programs such as Cosmetology,

Health Careers, Smart Home Electronics, Project Lead the Way: Pre-

Engineering and Biomedical Sciences. We have built numerous partnerships

with Eli Lilly, Rolls Royce, Community Hospitals, Jane Pauley Community

Health Center, CEDIA, Major Tool and Die to name a few. The students and

staff bring the most satisfaction as I reflect on all the different state and

national awards and recognitions Walker has celebrated over the past years.

As I move into my new position, I am excited to see a future with great things to come at Walker. I

am thrilled to have Cindy Frey move into the director’s position. As the Assistant Director, she has been the

key to many of the successes Walker has already celebrated. Under her leadership, the possibilities are end-

less.

Walker Career Center is second to none when it comes to programs, teachers and facilities which

provide our students countless opportunities to explore their future careers. Thank you to staff, students,

parents and community for your continued support of the Walker Career Center!

National SkillsUSA This past June,

tion students from around the

country compete in their tech-

nical skills areas or in leader-

ship events. Queshala Irby

competed in the Commercial

Baking and Hannah Davis

competed in Dental Assisting.

Hannah shared, ―My week in

Kansas City was such an

awesome experience that I'm

glad I could be apart of. I had

a blast meeting new people

from all around the country

and getting to talk to them

about their competitions and how they prepared themselves. The whole week was just non stop fun and ex-

citement! If anyone has a chance to ever be involved in SkillsUSA, they should definitely do it and chal-

lenge themselves to become better at their skill!‖
