When you pick up the new 2016-2017 Membership Yearbook at our September 7 meeting it will look similar to last year’s award-winning yearbook. But lo, what vast change awaits inside(!!??). The directory is now (hold onto your seats) alphabetized by FIRST NAME, then last name. So, “Weej Baggaley” gets pushed to the back, while “Anna Wyman” zooms up to the head of the class! I don’t know about you, but I know a lot of our members by their first name and haven’t a clue as to their last name. This will make it a lot easier to find people. I hope you like the change.

from Weej BaggaleyThis summer was my 30th wedding anniversary! To celebrate, my husband and I took a fantastic cruise down the Danube River, starting near Munich, Germany, traveling through Austria (including a Salzburg day trip and two nights in Vienna), through Slovakia and ending in Budapest. We enjoyed several excursions (including a chamber orchestra concert in Vienna and a private wine tasting at an ‘oooold’ biodynamic winery). Our final evening included a nighttime cruise through Budapest with the beautiful buildings lit up and looking better than any fairy tale you could imagine. We used the cruise line Uniworld for our trip and cannot think of one thing to improve the experience. It was magical! Before the river cruise, we took our kids with us to visit my husband’s family in the UK and had a fabulous time seeing our nieces and nephews who are all grown up now. We then left our kids with their UK family before heading off on our own for the cruise! After the cruise, my dear husband flew back to collect the kids in the UK and then return home with them, while I got to continue on my merry way for another two nights in Krakow, Poland, and three nights in Prague. I enjoyed the challenge of traveling those foreign lands (with VERY foreign languages) on my own. There was so much beautiful architecture and such a deep and fascinating history to explore. I must, MUST, go back again and with my husband next time!

Over the summer, our fearless Civic Beautification team kept up the maintenance at our gardens. Thank you to all who kept our gardens going. Come join us this Fall for the beautiful views, the camaraderie, and the glow that your sweat equity will provide. Let’s keep our San Clemente gardens beautiful for all to enjoy.

their appointed rounds”.

As we begin the 2016-2017 Garden Club year, we also start our monthly Garden Therapy visits to the Rehabilitation Institute of Southern California (RIO). The RIO serves adults 18 through 80 plus years, who have a range of disabilities. The clients are bused or driven daily to the RIO for a variety of activities and rehabilitation exercises. In spite of their many physical and mental challenges, the RIO folks are enthusiastic, good humored and appreciative. For over a decade, each month September through May, volunteers from the San Clemente Garden Club prepare hands-on (usually nature related) crafts, often using recycled materials, to share with the 65 to 75 clients at the RIO. Occasionally, Garden Therapy has presenters bring fascinating facts of nature such as the life cycle of the monarch butterfly, bluebird and owl habits and habitats. Garden Club volunteers always receive a wholehearted welcome from the convivial RIO folks. Assisting the engaging clients with a craft is enjoyable, sometimes a challenge and always rewarding. It is heartwarming to see the proud and happy faces of the clients when they complete one of the Garden Therapy crafts, which they eagerly take home to share with family and/or friends. The pure pleasure with which the challenged adults engage in a simple craft and the company of volunteers is an inspiration to all who encounter them. This year, in addition to Tom Benton and me, Barbara Mclaughlin has graciously stepped in as our third co-chair. Barbara joined Garden Club a couple of years ago and volunteered for Garden Therapy. Barbara was a former teacher, so we know she will have lots of great craft ideas.Garden Therapy takes place the third Wednesday of each month, at 12:45 at the RIO, except February and April when we meet on the second Wednesday. Before each visit to the RIO we meet at Suzi Klickstein’s to prepare the materials needed for the upcoming Garden Therapy craft. Our first prep will be Thursday, September 16 at 10:30 am at Suzi’s. Our Garden Therapy craft takes place at the RIO on Wednesday, September 21 at 12:45 pm. Please contact Suzi Klickstein at [email protected] if you would like to join us for the prep and/or the activity. We strive to use recyclables whenever possible, so from time to time we will request members to donate corks, cans and other items. Looking forward to another great year.
