WEST-HIGH SANITARY MEETING NOTICE A public meeting of the West-High Amana San- itary District will be held on Monday, November 21, 2016 at 7:00 PM, at the Middle Amana Fire Station. FEATHERS IN THE WIND I want to apologize for not recognizing Veteran’s Day. I will be the first to say that there is very little I like about guns and especially warfare, but I do understand the facts. I remember that as a young girl how proud I was of the fact that my Daddy had been in the US Navy. My Granny Evans had even taken his winter coat and made it into a coat for me complete with a red plaid lining and those wonderful military buttons that were large enough for a little girl’s hands to take and be able to button her Daddy’s coat. We, of the post war baby generation, were so proud of our father’s. (There was even one classmate whose mother had also been in the military.) We would often debate the merits of each branch of the service and then “try” and sing their songs. The day my father was buried we even sang the Navy Hymn at his graveside. Ironically I would also be part of the generation that would protest the Vietnam Conflict. (It is not a WAR until Congress declares it.) I think that was about the time that I finally real- ized what war was all about. It is not medals, marches, beautiful uniforms, etc., but lots of men and women going into the service to protect people like me and allow me to vote, speak up when I feel an issue is important, know that there is someone out there protecting me even though that person doesn’t even know who I am. It is also a time for people like me to REALIZE that many of the people who went into the service were not necessarily generals, but “grunts.” These Join Safe Haven of Iowa County for our Autumn Cookie Walk other baked goods available Saturday, November 19, 2016 10am – 2pm Safe Haven Building 2783 Highway 6 Trail, South Amana, Safe Haven is a 501(c)(3) organization. John McGrath, Amana Farms, reports that the harvest is in and boy, what a harvest. Amana Farms completed its soybean harvest last week with an average of 66 bushels of soy- beans per acre. The previous record high yield was in 2011 at 55 bushels per acre, McGrath noted. The corn harvest concluded this week and is ex- pected to finish about 215 bushels per acre. That’s another record yield for Amana Farms. 2015 was the previous high record yield with 193 bushels of corn per acre. All told Amana Farms will have grown, har- vested, stored and delivered to market 1.1 million bushels of 2016 grain. That’s about 1,500 semi trailer loads. McGrath reported that the record harvest has presented a positive challenge to the Farms. “Yields are amazing. . .the great yields have created a bit of a storage and handling issue. . . We are building extra storage, have rented three bins from another farmer and hauled more to town during harvest than normal just to make room.” “I would like to mention that the hard work of our employees and their timeliness has helped make these great results possible,” McGrath said. He cited welcomed rainfall, a long growing season, good weed control and soil fertility as factors in the record breaking results this harvest. News & Notes from page 1OBiTuAry Mary Ann Fels, age 87 of Amana, passed away November 10, 2016. Funeral Service was Tues-day, November 15, 2016, at the Middle Amana Church with Elder Jon Childers officiating. Buri-al was in the Amana Cemetery. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Community Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with the arrangements. Mary Ann is survived by three children Margo (John) Jarosz of Fairfax, Paula (Leonard) Welsh of Swisher and Jason (Holly) Fels of Geneva, Il-linois; grandchildren Ben (Amanda) Welsh, Erin (Brent) Platner, Zachary (Jenna Bujalski) and Jessica (Robert Brodarick) Jarosz, Braden, Jack and Kaitlyn Fels. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George in 1985, and a sister Betty Lou Griess. Mary Ann Haas was born June 6, 1929, in Ama-na, the daughter of John and Louise Oehl Haas. She graduated from the Amana Schools in 1947. On October 23, 1948, she was united in marriage to George Fels in Amana. She worked at the Ox Yoke Inn and at the Amana Society Woolen Mill salesroom. Mary Ann was a lifelong member of the Amana Community Church. In 1975, she started and led a monthly service for residents at Colonial Manor. She was active in many commu-nity clubs and led Campfire Girls. Her wedding marked a change from traditional Amana Church weddings by wearing a white dress and having a big wedding. Mary Ann enjoyed reading, playing bridge, gardening and volunteering. She loved traveling and meeting new people but more than anything, Mary Ann loved Amana. She loved having her family and friends near, making her home a home. She was accepting of everyone and stayed positive when people needed a place to feel secure, and at peace, often just by her presence. Mary Ann was always full of love and laughter. are the people who literally put their lives on the line to protect a country that was not always grate-ful. It is also a time to REALIZE that there are men and women out there who came back missing parts of their physical bodies, but also suffer from PTSD. Years ago we used to call is “Shell Shock” or we would totally ignore it. PTSD is very real and VERY CRUEL. I often wonder if some of those service people are trying not hide the pain they are suffering in their minds for the sake of their friends and family. There is a poem that was once written about two men meet on a battlefield. They look into each oth-er’s eyes and see that they share the same hopes and dreams yet they are on different sides.I think that would describe all of us if we would just pause and think. The hate and anger can be stilled if we would only take the time to listen to one another and just TRY to understand. Perhaps one’s mind would not change, but also perhaps one would realize that the other party involved wants on the best to happen.

Those Talented Elves are at Work It takes a village of talented elves to make the Tannenbaum Forest sparkle and that team of vol-unteers will be working all week to prepare the for-est for its grand opening the Friday after Thanks-giving. This year the Amana Tannenbaum Forest will benefit the University of Iowa Childrens Hospital so it’s time to pull out all the stops and make the Festhalle barn glimmer and glitter from floorboard to rafter. Should you stop by or drive by the Festhalle dur-ing the next few days you’ll notice the activity. But be sure to visit the Tannenbaum Forest when it opens Thanksgiving weekend. Savanna Collier, ACCVB events coordinator is pleased to report that volunteers have come out in force to help in the forest. A few volunteers are still needed to work 2 or 3 hour shifts greeting visi-tors and selling cocoa and cider in St. Nick’s Café. If you would like to join in the fun and help in the forest, contact Emilie Hoppe at [email protected] to sign up for a volunteer shift. Hours for opening weekend: Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26 the for-est is open 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Sunday Nov. 27 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Santa Claus will be at the Forest Thanksgiving weekend, Friday 3 – 5 p.m.; Satur-day, 11 – 6 p.m; and Sunday, 11 – 3 p.m.
