BABASAHEB DR. B.R. AMBEDKAR, BUDDHISM AND DALIT EMANCIPATIONPrem K. ChumberEditor-in-Chief:
www.ambedkartimes.com Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar
converted to Buddhism at the historicpublic ceremony in Nagpur on October14, 1956. The decision to embrace Bud-dhism by Dr. Ambedkar was not at all asudden attempt. It took him more thantwo decades (from Yeola Conference,October 13, 1935, where he took thevow that ‘even though I am a Hinduborn, I will not die a Hindu’, to the his-toric Nagpur conversion ceremony, Oc-tober 14, 1956, the day he embracedBuddhism with thousands of his follow-ers) to translate his vow for conversioninto reality.
He decided to embrace Bud-dhism after thoroughly exhausting allpossible ways of reforming Hinduismfrom within and exploring the possibilityof conversion to Christianity, Sikhism, and Islam for overcoming the oppressivestructures of Brahminical social order(BSO) in India. Converting to Buddhism,in fact, was a unique and meticulouslycalculated move. It was a unique movein the sense that though there have been
many instances of individual conversionsto Buddhism, the real credit for system-atically organizing collective conversionto Buddhism on a mass scale in India, beyond doubt, goes to Dr. Ambedkar. The historic conversion ceremony atNagpur assumed further importancewith the publication of The Buddha andhis Dhamma shortly after the demise ofBabasaheb on December 6, 1956.
Dr. Ambedkar discovered inconversion to Buddhism the most de-sired and reliable way of overcoming thecenturies-old system of social exclusion.According to Babasaheb, the central the-sis of the Buddhist philosophy revolvesaround two major problems: the firstproblem was that there was suffering inthe world and the second was how toremove this suffering and make mankindhappy. Since caste and caste based so-cial exclusion dehumanizes the Dalits,Babasaheb underlined the urgency ofcaste annihilation. It is in this contextthat conversion to Buddhism becomesmeaningful. Another aspect that under-lines the importance of conversion toBuddhism encourages strategic alliancebetween the non-Brahminical/ Shudras/
Bahujan Samaj/ artisans and theDalit/Ati Shudras sections of the Indiansociety and calls for their united frontagainst the oppressive and hegemonicstructures of Brahminical social order.Forging unity among the victims of the‘varna order’ in turn aimed at reclaimingIndia on the basis of the neo-Buddhist identity.
The very fact that Dr. Ambedkarfounded three political parties (the Inde-pendent Labour Party, All India Sched-uled Castes Federation and theRepublican Party of India), and the lead-ing role that he played in drafting theConstitution of independent India, vindi-cated his active involvement in the polityand society of the country even after de-nouncing Hinduism publicly in1935 andlater on embracing Buddhism in 1956.Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar used to em-phasize on the application of scientificapproach to solve the question of casteand social exclusion.
His movement also became verypopular in Punjab. He visited Punjabthrice. It was during his last visit in Oc-tober 27-29, 1951 that he spoke atlength to his people in Punjab about his
approach and ways of Dalit empower-ment. He delivered speeches at Jaland-har, Ludhiana and Patiala and alsoaddressed the students of D.A.V. Col-lege Jalandhar.
Though the people of Punjabwere well impressed by his great move-ment but they could not follow him soclosely in relation to conversion to Bud-dhism. Late D. C. Ahir, a renownedAmbedkarite Buddhist and world re-puted scholar of Buddhism, was of theopinion that due to deep faith of Sched-uled Castes population of Punjab, espe-cially of the Doaba region, in theteachings and spirituality of Saheb ShriGuru Ravidass Ji, Buddhism could notbecome so popular in this state. Anotherpossible reason behind the deep popu-larity of the teachings of Saheb ShriGuru Ravidass in Punjab could be theconcerted efforts of Babu Mangu RamMugowalia and the mass appeal of hisfamous Ad Dharm movement. The popularity of Ad Dharm can be knownfrom the fact that some of the scholarsof late started advocating that the prin-ciples of “Ad Dharm” are also followedin Buddhism.
