Ministry of Agriculture Control operations against

Desert Locusts in Eritrea exceeded 34,500 hectares until February 6, 2020. According to Mr. Tedros Sium, Head of the Migratory Pests Control Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), control operations are still underway in the Northern Red Sea Region of the country. Five control base stations -- Marsa-Gulbub, Sheeb, Wekiro, Girat (Emahmime) and Foro -- are still functional in combating the locusts.

Moreover, starting from the first week of February, the desert locust infestation in Aytos, Ara’eta Sub-zone of the Southern Red Sea Region, has developed in to an outbreak of hopper bands. Hence, the MoA is preparing to deploy control operation teams to the infestation site.

Ecological conditions in the locust breeding areas are still favorable. This will obviously make the control operations more prolonged. In addition, a number of locust swarms are still coming from different directions

of neighboring countries to the Northern as well as to the Southern Red-sea regions. Even

though Eritrea has so far saved its crops and range lands with almost no or insignificant damage, more resources are needed to strengthen the control operations.

For there is still a probability of locust swarm coming from neighboring countries and even across the Red sea, the Government of Eritrea is closely surveying and monitoring the potential infestation areas with its limited resources.

In other news, the MoA is introducing hydroponic and aqua-ponic farming to farmers to enhance animal fodder security as well as to show them alternative ways of improving food and nutrition security.

Hydroponic fodder production involves supplying cereal grain

with moisture and nutrients, all outside of a growing medium such as soil, and then harvesting

the resulting green shoots and root mat. This kind of production system is used in a number of livestock systems internationally. Even though the most commonly used cereal grain is barley, a range of cereals can be utilized for fodder production, including oats, wheat and maize.

Aqua-ponics is also the

integration of hydroponics and aquaculture which is gaining increased attention as a bio- integrated food production system in the world.

Eritrea, having a short period and unreliable rainy season, needs to increase its food and feed production by adopting modern technologies. Availability of fresh or dried grass and roughages as a whole for animal feed during dry seasons has been a great challenge for farmers for years.

The MoA is seeking ways and means of mitigating these challenges and obstacles. The adoption of hydroponic fodder

production as well as aquaponic farming is indeed prompted by these considerations and in order to enhance human and animal nutrition security.

As a preliminary measure, the Ministry established in December 2019 a demonstration area in the

premises of its headquarters. The demonstration site is run by a group of young experts who have been doing well in various innovative programmes.

A number of studies have been conducted in various countries to evaluate the effectiveness of hydroponic fodder. The hydroponic fodder produced at the Ministry was tested on chicken, rabbit, pigs and horses with a number of feed parameters. The results were found to be promising.

Around 50 farmers from different zobas visited the demonstration area. The farmers said the new technology is easy to adopt and very important in alleviating animal forage problems they face. Most of them promised to practice it in their farms.

Fodder sheds produce a large quantity of green fodder, with just one kg of grain producing 6 - 10kg of fodder sprouts (as green feed). Hydroponic fodder can be used as a supplementary feed and during dry seasons as a main feed for animals.

So far the innovation group at the MoA has managed to produce fodder from barley and maize. Some farmers in the pilot group assert that they normally provide around 7 kgs. of grain for just one cow. Observing 6-10 kg green fodder produced from 1kg of grain has aroused their interest.

The MoA has a plan to train extension workers from its regional offices to ensure that the technology trickles down to the village level.

Some 750 Kms away from Asmara, you find the gracefully designed city of Assab. One of the two ports of Eritrea, it proved its strategic prominence in the 19th century, long before Eritrea became a free state.

Assab is located in the Southern Red Sea region. The journey is pretty exhausting and sleeping seems to be the only way to escape the effect. But then it’s unwise to miss interesting encounters with nature and so you fight with all your might to stay awake holding your camera. The weather gets harsher as you drive farther but you are completely taken by the unusual, yet fascinating, exhibition of the region’s rich endowments you see through the car’s window, especially for first timers from the highlands. The view of the beach follows you until your final destination on one side and on the other side it seems as though the mountains are racing with your car. It’s quite exhilarating to be a first hand witness of such a wonder.

As you set foot on the land, you would be rocked back and forth by the excitement of having the privilege to visit such a beautiful place, and the warm air sends you words of comfort saying “it won’t take long until it gets cold and you can then celebrate the soothing reception offered in the evening”. The fatigue from the long bumpy ride fades away as you feel accepted by the gentle whisper and you head towards the beach after taking a bath.

The blue gold totally relieves your mind from being obsessed with the hot weather and the scorching sun. The dignified motion of the tide giving birth to foams is a beautiful display of nature at its best and the palm trees give it a rather delightful atmosphere. It gets one wondering “if it has this kind of effect on those who observe from far, how is it for its inhabitants who live in the limitless riches of its great being?” One completely goes oblivious of the world and travels to celebrate the essence of infinity at the mysterious ends of

Journey to Assab

the sea. Lost in the desire to live in the moment forever, you wish to build a shack right there and right then and live at the beach. Before you know it you find yourself swimming and soaked wet.

Assab looks its best in the evening when its residents and visitors are all over the town to have fun. Most people choose to spend the evening at recreational centers close to the sea. The refreshing air, the sound of the calm tide, the trees dancing to the gentle wind and the reflection of the moon on the sea are just a heavenly scenery in which one rejoices.

Another majestic encounter one should never miss while visiting Assab is “the sun rise”. It looks as if it’s making a grand entrance

to a show with its piercing rays right from the sea. This panorama testifies to the enormity of creation, and the soul rejoices in the look of this breathtaking view that looks like a work of art.

People from the Afar ethnic group, Tigrinya, Tigre, the urban-hafa (descendants of the Rashaida that migrated towards the area long time ago) and Ethiopians (who came during the colonization period) live at the port city of Assab.

The Afar’s mainly earn their living by fishing and herding animals. They are very attached with their land and the sea and they thankfully receive what it serves. Rice and fried fish is almost their everyday food, and they like to eat together. They shop for the day, which is

peculiar and uncommon in other regions and communities of Eritrea. I asked an old man why they like it that way, and he said, “Tomorrow is not ours to worry about but God’s; we merrily live for today”. This is practically their motto and it has always shaped their life style.

Afar women are equally strong and dazzlingly beautiful. Most are moderate in height, slim, dark skinned, cheerful with captivating smiles. They are great dancers too. Their traditional dressing, jewelry and hair styles (braids) are

so amazing, with a potential to be adopted as fashion in Eritrea and even abroad. The most common dress is called “deri’e”, a plain two-layered dress. It’s amazing how a garment that big could look

great on their slim bodies. I was surprised to see that globalization failed to make an impact on their attire despite the great influence Arab countries have on the area.

A traditional liquor called Doma, which is extracted from palm trees, is popular among the Afar. It is sweet with a little kick of alcoholic taste. “Abaeke” is also another traditional drink and is alcohol free. It’s served at weddings and on religious holidays (Eid). Dessert is a big part of the Afar meals which they never skip. Their dessert incudes

dates and mukbasa (bread with banana or honey).

The wedding ceremonies are very festive. The Arar are very serious about arranging the best servings at their weddings. People dance “keke” (it’s danced by lifting one leg at a time and the right hand with it). The bride sits with her groom the whole day and covers her face so that no one could see her. They don’t go out but people visit them in the room they are in. Almost half of the wedding ceremonies’ expense is covered by the groom. It is his way of showing his in-laws that the bride is in good hands and that he can be trusted. It is common for the groom to live with his in-laws after the wedding unless he can afford a house.

Apart from the long and tiring journey, every part of Assab is a pleasure to the eyes and to the heart. I was compelled to write about it after I witnessed what Assab could offer.

In the 1970s when there was massive foreign intervention with the intention of liquidating the liberation movement in Eritrea, massive sacrifices were paid in Massawa and else where in the country. These sacrifices along with other similar sacrifices have remained ever memorable in Eritrea. It is due to the sacrifices paid as a result of such unjust intervention, among other things, that the EPLF was forced to adopt a strategy of systematic withdrawal, which was very helpful for renewing the tactics in relation to what had to be done for the liberation of the country. As a result of what happened to the freedom fighters then and especially in the case of Massawa, some might have expected the fighters to harbor some negative thoughts in their minds when they tried to click their memories of that time – the 1970s. That means some negative thinkers would have predicted that it would seem unlikely for the freedom fighters to basically liberate the country by liberating the key port of Massawa. This is to mean that, with the ugly experience of the 1970s in mind, liberating Massawa would have been much more fearful for the freedom fighters.

However, when it comes to the mindset of the fighters and the people in Eritrea, the positive thinking that was cultivated

Fenkil and Massawaduring the struggle for independence was more than enough to

outweigh t h e inclinations to think negatively. Even the captives (Derg war prisoners) used to openly appreciate that the degree of enthusiasm and commitment of the freedom fighters was so tremendously incredible to turns the minuses to pluses and to make the impossible easily possible.

What memories come to our mind when we celebrate the liberation of Massawa? The sacrifices paid for its liberation – including the civilians killed by the Derg regime in its hopelessness moments. This means we celebrate not only the tremendous achievements but we also try to keep in our memories the

sacrifices paid for the liberation of the country in general and that of Massawa in particular; that is, without recognizing the sacrifices we were required to pay for materializing the colorful achievements, it would not be possible to feel the gains as gains enjoyed are often valued depending on the pains one is required to endure. Our martyrs paid their blood to save us by liberating our country. This may be a means for renewing our commitment to develop the nation, that is, to make Eritrea a prosperous country not by

shedding our blood but simply by pouring

our sweat.

During the hopeless

moments of the Derg regime, the attack

engineered by the Derg was redirected to the less powerful

and helpless civilians (mainly women and children). War planes redirected their attack not to innocent children and women only but also to public institutions that were designed to serve the public. This indicates how much unconcerned the regime was about the people. The same stories would have been repeated in the case of other cities in Eritrea, but the liberation of the port city of Massawa saved many additional sacrifices as it shortened the long walk to freedom.

The expectation of many people was that Massawa would be liberated after the liberation of some other cities such as Keren and Asmara. This would have

caused considerable destruction materially as well as humanly. Hence, we can see that the liberation of Massawa was not an ordinary victory as it tremendously saved lives and property in the country. The Derg regime was not able to breathe properly after Massawa was liberated. For example, the transportation to Eritrea was confined to airplanes only. Such a situation shortened the struggle for independence and significantly minimized the sacrifices we would have paid for the liberation of Eritrea. Sometimes I tend to believe that the liberation of Massawa is much more important even that of the Independence Day. That is why we often celebrate the liberation of Masswa more colorfully.

Fenkil is used in the Tigrigna language mainly to mean

uprooting. In connection to the liberation of Massawa, Fenkil means uprooting colonialism from the country. And actually it is the Fenkil operation that enabled the freedom fighters (the Eritrean people in general) to free the entire territory, that is, to eventually uproot colonialism and the ills associated with colonialism. Having said this, hopefully, Massawa, as a major port city in Eritrea and the sea resources surrounding it will play a central role in uprooting the ills associated with poverty, not only the ills associated with war and the like. Let us all hope so and be determined to do so.

“My Motivation and inspiration starts from w hat has stayed close to

My heart, African people and culture” Artist Yegizaw Michael

Asmait Futsumbrhan

Let’s meet Yegizaw Michael, a painter who shares his thoughts and desires with the world through various works of art. Yegizaw, AkA Yeggy, is one of the most inspirational Eritrean artists who has dedicated his professional life to painting, sculpture, and mosaic art. A man of many talents, Yegizaw has received national and international awards. Hoping to share his knowledge and skills with other artists, Yegizaw plans to share his experience with Eritrean artists to inspire them to produce works of art that would make the Eritrean art industry shine internationally.

Today, Q&A gives you a short interview we had with the artist via email

Hello, Yegizaw. Thank you for making the time to share your experience with us. Would you please introduce yourself to our

readers?

I was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. That is also where I took my fine art studies. Currently, I am working in Seattle, Washington, USA, as the Art Program Director and Arts in Nature Festival Director at a nonprofit organization. I am customarily active in creating environmentally friendly EcoArt programs and activities for Seattle youth. I also own a studio based in Seattle, Yeggy Studio.

I have always been eager to express myself through mixed media and visual art. My motivation and inspiration starts from what has stayed close to my heart, African people and Culture.

What type of art styles do you follow? And is there any specific reason?

I don’t conform to a specific style or type of artwork, but I would like to consider myself as someone who can identify with

the contemporary art world.

My artistic work is to provoke questions about natural cycles, provide a sense of place and to reflect on the movement of time. My paintings are personal and positive contacts for vibrant thoughts and spiritual moments.

In Public art, I use all kinds of materials to reinterpret the abstract and cyclical nature of all things. Sharing my work with spaces of infrastructure is the synthesis of a long-term relationship and embedded in it, the very moment in history that prolongs its memory in our minds.

You were fortunate enough to win the Raimok Award. Would you please share with us your feelings regarding the event?

Winning the award felt good. It was a great honor to be recognized among other incredible Eritrean artists, and the experience deeply humbled me to motivate myself to work even harder.

Yegizaw, you also shared your talents by teaching students. How has it influenced you as an artist?

Well, teaching is an excellent way of giving back to the community. It is also a very gratifying and satisfying experience for me personally. As much as I teach and share my knowledge, I also learned new things from the students. I feel like artists should share their knowledge and skill, that is how we can all grow as professionals and inspire others to come out and produce great works.

If you were to describe art, what it means to you, what would you tell us?

Art for me means the expression of my heart. However, to speak in general terms, describing art is a highly complex issue, not only in terms of its multiplicity

of forms and types but also in terms of its historical and cultural background. Also, the definition of art is very different for each person. Therefore, a simple description, or even a broad view of art, is proven difficult.

Is there any plan to share your experiences with young Eritrean artists in the future?

Well, hopefully, I will get an opportunity to come to Eritrea and share what I’ve learned and the journey I went through to get where I am today, and in the process, open new opportunities for young Eritrean artists to advance their talent.

Thank you for your time.
