Guest Speaker: Joanne Hand

Joanne Hand is the Northern Coordinator for Hagar NZ. Her role involves raising awareness about Hagar and what they do to fundraise. Joanne feels very passionate about the value of people and lives by Hagar’s motto “Whatever it takes to restore a broken life”. Joanne is a fantastic communicator and we were privileged to have her attend our breakfast meeting on March 13th to share what

Hagar is doing in the fight against slavery in places such as Afghanistan, Cambodia and Vietnam and what is being done to help restore wholeness to the lives of women and children torn apart by human rights abuse.

Joanne shared with us that there are 40.3 million people in modern day slavery….today! 71% of these are women and 25% are children. Factors that propel demand are consumerism, sex and greed and the internet plays its part in making this far more accessible than ever before. Human trafficking is now the second on the list of global criminal behavior, overtaking arms dealings. 66.4% of human trafficking the world takes place in South East Asia and the Pacific. This is a heartbreaking situation. New Zealand is not immune. Labour and sex trafficking has been in New Zealand since the 1990’s. Worker exploitation has started to have it’s story told in the NZ media, bringing the situation to light and finally resulting in a successful human trafficking prosecution case. NZ is leading the way in some respects, the law has been changed to ensure all fishing boats in NZ waters are subject to NZ law, the first country in the world to do this.

Hagar’s vision is communities that are free and healed from the trauma of slavery, trafficking and abuse, whatever it takes, for as long as it takes to restore a broken life. Since its start in 1994 by one man wanting to make a difference, Hagar has had over 15,000 clients. They offer full support for the whole journey of healing, starting with a place to live, medical care, legal support, schooling, friendship and trauma-informed care. For some this journey can take many, many years.
