Just found this photo taken by the helicopter pilot with his machine and us (Ros

and Anne) standing in front. We had a great day with a few minor injuries

(Boulderdash, September 2012).

The chopper was there to evacuate patients out of rugged terrain and the pilot was

going to take us with him to get to the patient. He gave us a run down on our role

in the chopper if need be, but fortunately we didn't have to use his expertise.

Something VERY special... Ros Jones, Batchelor

This video brought tears of joy to my eyes. These folk were in the right place at the right

time to free a magnificent whale from certain death in a fishing net entanglement. The

whale's magnificent show of gratitude when she was set free from the net is just awesome.

Enjoy!

Vitamin F...... Why do I have a variety of friends who are all so

different in character? How can I get along with them

all? I think that each one helps to bring out a

"different" part of me.

With one of them I am polite. With another, I joke. I

sit down and talk about serious matters with one.

With another I laugh a lot. I listen to one friend's

problems. Then I listen to another one's advice for

me.

My friends are like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. When

completed, they form a treasure box. A treasure of

friends! They are my friends who understand me

better than I understand myself.

They're friends who support me through good days

and bad.

Real Age doctors tell us that friends are good for our

health.

Dr. Oz calls them Vitamin F (for Friends) and counts

the benefits of friends as essential to our well being.

Research shows that people in strong social circles

have less risk of depression and terminal strokes.

If you enjoy Vitamin F constantly you can be up to 30

years younger than your real age. The warmth of

friendship stops stress and even in your most intense

moments, it decreases the chance of a cardiac arrest

or stroke by 50%.

I'm so happy that I have a stock of Vitamin F!

In summary, we should value our friends and keep in

touch with them. We should try to see the funny side

of things and laugh together and be there for each

other in the tough moments.

Thank you for being my Vitamins!

Memories of an old ambo – Alan Caust OStJ JP Mandy Langdon was our Comms operator at the

Parap Centre. I had only just arrived and was living at

the Baptist Church Hostel on Ross Smith Avenue. I was

awaiting my car to be delivered from Adelaide so had

to walk down to the Ambulance Centre to get to work.

Warren Burgess had met me at the old Darwin airport

at 0300hrs. Rod Bramley was the Centre Officer and

was a keen mechanic. The stories he told me of

Cyclone Tracy in 1974 had me in disbelief. Upstairs an

airconditioner had crashed onto a desk where the

then Comms was located - they hung onto side rails as

they attempted to reach the ground floor.

Even in 1978 - the devastation was clearly evident.

Not a tree in sight of anything. This is an honest

appraisal - I could literally see the intersection of the

Bagot Road and Stuart Highway from what we called

"crystal corner" way back where we turned into Bagot

road. On the left were just remnants of the RAAF

houses; high stilts and no houses. We called her

"crystal corner" due to the many accidents we

attended on that intersection that led also to

Nightcliff.

I already knew about some 12 SA Ambos we flew to

Darwin in 1974 from Adelaide to assist the struggling

volunteers and Commonwealth Department of Health

services that were totally overwhelmed. My word

they were overwhelmed and this is very poignant in

our history – St John Ambulance evolved as a

professional Ambulance Service as a direct result.

I was a kid living in Snowtown in South Australia - yep,

the notorious bodies in the barrels at our local bank; I

played with my mate – the Bank Manager's son right

there where it happened; but I saw and witnessed the

literally hundreds of cars coming through from Darwin

so totally damaged. Along with other towns such as

Tennant Creek that I know of - with tremendous

assistance from the CWA alone – families were fed

and looked after on what must have been a difficult

journey - it was all red dirt from Alice Springs to Port

Augusta in SA.

It is also poignant to mention that even all those

monies from our Australian Government coffers to

help these families - a lot was paid back from Aussie

families once they got back on their feet. They were

just grateful for that assistance. They didn't have to do

it – they just did. Makes you proud to be an Aussie to

my mind.
