Duties1. Director: Fort Carson Functional Restoration Program

Integrative Treatment of Chronic Pain-Providing evidence-based multimodal intervention for chronic pain based on Army Pain Management Task Force Directives and the American Pain Society (APS) guidelines for Interdisciplinary Pain Programs.

Program content is tailored to the goals of the participant to improve quality of life, achieve an optimal level of functioning, and increase self-reliance in managing chronic pain and general well-being.

Focus is on acceptance and behavioral activation rather than reduction in the experience of pain. The program deemphasizes:

o Disease or damage in biomedical terms.o Deficits in the Service Member’s personality or mental health.

Return to military duty is addressed as a primary goal only if salient to the participant; however, vocational rehabilitation is encouraged as an element of overall health and wellness.

The FRP takes a Holistic, person-centered, and person-empowering approach to chronic pain management, combining treatments from clinically proven conventional, complementary, and alternative health to address body and mind.

Responsibilitieso Program and curriculum development.o Supervision and training of clinical staff.o Provide specialized health psychological evaluations, using a range of appropriate diagnostic

psychological instruments to assess psychosocial factors associated with health-altering behaviors/attitudes and beliefs, psychological aspects of disease management, and psychological capacity for response to interventions/rehabilitation procedures.

o Provide consultation to physicians and other medical providers with the goal of enhancing accepted medical treatment for chronic pain and mitigating risk associated with potential medical interventions. As a clinical health psychologist on a multidisciplinary treatment team, participate in treatment planning and outcome evaluation.

o Also provide patient consultation for professional staff across disciplines to address both behavioral health (e.g. depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, relational problems) and behavioral medicine issues (e.g. chronic pain, diabetes, smoking cessation, weight loss, compliance with medical treatment).

o Assess and treat Soldiers pre- and post-deployment, addressing bio-psychosocial factors impacting physical health and medical problems.

2. Faculty and Coordinator: Actively involved in the conceptualization, planning, and execution of the Advanced Pain Management Course for primary care and internal medicine providers. Aims include the following:
