OUR PARISH STEWARDSHIP April 8, 2018April 8, 2018April 8, 2018

Welcome to new Visitation Catholic School Principal, MRS. CARRIE MIJAL

Dear Visitation School Families, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to become part of the Visitation School community! I have served as principal of St. Robert Bellarmine School in Chicago for 10 years, which has prepared me to bring my administrative experi-ence to my new school. Before that, I served as a teacher and Asst. Principal at St. Luke School in River Forest, for 14 years. I am an enthusiastic supporter of Catholic education. My educational training includes a B.S. in Education from Northern Illinois University, an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University and an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. I have graduated with distinction from each university. I have earned my Certified Catechist certificate and am almost finished with the Coordinator of Religious Education program that is offered through the University of St. Mary of the Lake. My husband Chris and I are blessed with two children who are now wonderful and caring adults; they are both college graduates with jobs. Ah, no more tuition! I enjoy coming to school and parish events, so we will hopefully meet soon. Over the summer, I plan to be avail-able for you to meet with me so we can get to know each other. God Bless, Mrs. Carrie Mijal

NEWS FROM THE P.I.T.

PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney

We hear in our first reading and Gospel, that we need to repent so that we can

receive the forgiveness of our sins!

“Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.” —Acts 3:19

I t is an important message to proclaim. Yet there is something even greater that Christ is offering us! He is not just offering us a clean slate or an acceptance of our apology, He is inviting us into a deep and intimate relationship with His very being! Imagine a situation when a stranger had wronged you!

L et’s say they realized their fault and apologized of their wrongdoing. Would you then bring them into your house, prepare a room for them, feed them, and make them part of your family? The answer is mostly likely no and this sounds like an absurd proposition. But that is what Christ is offering us! We, by our sin have wronged God. Yet, in God’s mercy and love, He offers us something we could never imagine, a deep intimate relationship with Love itself! All we need to do is follow

the words of the Scriptures... repent and have our sins forgiven.

And the Lord will do the rest!

Goal: $136,900.00 Amount Pledged: $117,725.00 Amount Paid: $ 99,200.00 Donor Count: 229

Thank you to all who have responded to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. We are most grateful for your generosity and will keep you in our prayers.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: OPEN MINDS, HEARTS AFLAME

The disciples’ response in the familiar Emmaus story should be our own, especially when we celebrate the Eucharist — to have our minds open to God’s word, to have our hears on fire for Christ. FIRST READING The God of our fathers has glorified his servant Jesus (Acts 3:13-15, 17-19). A crowd gathered in the temple when Peter healed a man crippled from birth. He shared a kerygma, (a first preach-ing) of the good news. Peter spoke to a Jewish audience. When we share the good news, we must make sure that we phrase it in a way that our audience can understand it (e.g., different ways for the elderly, teenagers, etc.). Peter clearly states the guilt of the Jewish people and their leaders in putting Jesus to death; he just as clearly states that God does not want to punish them. God wants to in-vite them into new life in Christ. Hence, he calls them to conversion so that their sins might be forgiven. SECOND READING The way we may be sure that we know Jesus is to keep his Commandments (1 John 2:1-5a). In the early days of the Church there was a certain ambi-guity toward the idea of Christians committing sins. If we belonged to Jesus and were washed free of our sins in the sacrament of Baptism, then we should abandon our incli-nations to sin and live in the freedom of the children of God. Yet, experience teaches us that we still are tempted, and once in a while we still fall. What can we say to this? This reading tries to strike a balance. It tells us that we should not sin, for that negates our love for God. How-ever, if we are weak and do sin, Jesus will be our Advo-cate and intercede for us before the Father.

GOSPEL Jesus stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you" (Luke 24:35-48). This is the third resurrection narratives in the Gospel of Luke. In this third account, the disciples see Jesus face-to-face. The three accounts give an outline of our life as Christians. We first come to the faith because we have heard about Jesus from others (parents, teachers, etc.). We then come to know Jesus in reading about him in the Gospels and in the celebration of the sacraments. Finally, we see him face-to-face, for we come to recognize his presence in our lives. This particular account emphasizes the corporeal reality of the risen Jesus. There was a her-esy called Docetism in the early Church that denied that Jesus had truly become flesh, and especially that he had suffered on the cross and risen. This reading allows the disciples to see that Jesus had flesh and bones, even showing him eating some fish. The reading concludes with one of Luke’s favorite themes: that Jesus had to ful-fill all that had been written about him. Luke believed that God has a plan for each of us, and that our only true joy lies in being obedient to God’s plan for us. REFLECTION Our first reading and Gospel conclude by focusing on re-pentance for the forgiveness of sins. First John proclaims that anyone who sins has an Advocate with God in Jesus Christ. He helps us repent. We repent by turning to that Advocate. One way we turn to him is by celebrating Mass. The Eucharist is medicine for the sick in need of repen-tance, not a prize for the perfect. Many who have cele-brated Mass throughout their lives may also have partici-pated in daily Mass as a member of the assembly, or as a server, choir member, musician, lector, sacristan, greeter, etc. As members of the Body of Christ, in that meal of sac-rificial love, we may take our need for repentance for granted. As sinners we need to pray, “Lord, have mercy.” Forgiven, we need to acclaim, “You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.” The Word of God chal-lenges and affirms us, which is why we must say, “Thanks be to God.” We need to lift up our heart with our brothers and sisters with whom we pray, “We lift them up to the Lord.” We need God’s healing: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” The fact is that God has said the word, Jesus, He opens minds to understand the scrip-tures, feeds us with his very self, and is our advocate with God. On the Third Sunday of Easter and every Sunday, let that awareness make you incredulous for joy, amazed at God’s forgiving love. Gather for word and sacrament with the baptized and let God’s love be perfected in you.

Visitation Parish — CATHOLIC BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB —

The Kings Good Servant, God’s First

Thursday, April 19, 9:30-11:30 am Parish Center (Meeting Room 1) THE TITLE ABOVE ARE THE WORDS which St. Thomas More spoke just as he was to be executed for his de-fense of the Catholic Church. They are also the title of the most recent book on St. Thomas More, written by James Monti. St. Thomas More is widely recognized as the good-humored Renaissance humanist scholar who wrote Utopia and two decades later died a mar-tyr’s death. Yet, More’s sacrifice of his life was but the culminating act of a life-long dedication to his faith. This book provides a new portrait of the Saint and exploration of his books and personal letters. LAST YEAR WE READ PART ONE AND PART TWO, in April we will discuss Part III. In this section, readings will relate to the matter of Henry VIII’s request for a divorce, St. Thomas’ trial, imprisonment and execu-tion. Most of the copy included is from St. Thomas’ own writings. This section is important because it describes the most dramatic events in the saint’s life. Join us to discuss this remarkable book. A study guide is available by contacting Pauline Scharres, at 630-257-2693 or email at [email protected].

Earlier in this school year, Rev. John Belmonte, S.J., Ph.D., Diocese of Joliet Catholic School

Superintendent, announced that this year’s devotional theme to be, “The Most Holy Eucharist:

The Riches of His Glorious Inheritance.”…

STUDENTS AND TEACHERS THROUGHOUT THE JOLIET DIOCESE have been studying the Eucharistic Miracles of the World and discussing Jesus’ True Pres-ence in the Eucharist, the Bread and Wine that they re-ceive at Mass. Each school in the Joliet Diocese has 8th Grade Devotional Leaders that spread the Good News of Jesus, specifically His True Presence, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist. Throughout the school year, the Devotional Leaders visited classrooms to facilitate discussion about “The Most Holy Eucharist.” Many of you have probably seen the Visitation students praying in the Adoration Chapel. The Joliet Diocese students and their teachers have been keeping track of how many times during the week they have spent time with Jesus either at Mass and/or praying before the tabernacle or the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel. When you love someone, you want to spend more time with them. Taking time out of one’s week to sit in Jesus’ Presence definitely brings us closer to Him. The relationship that we nurture with our children and Jesus is very important and lasts an eternity. If you have not brought your child to the Adoration Chapel thus far, do so this week. Remember Our Lord said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14). There is an empty hour on Saturday at 3 AM. Please call Mary Lewis at 630-941-9173 or Joan Taylor at 630-530-8963, to inquire about your special hour spending time with your child and Jesus in the Eucharist! It does not get better than this!
