Indianapolis Evansville Louisville, KY Corydon 30 minutes west of Louisville, KY As You Explore Indiana Caverns Animals, including Flat-headed peccaries, Pleistoscene black bears, bison, fishers, porcupine, owls, snakes, and many others, entered what is today Indiana Caverns approximately 40,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. After the Ice Age entrance closed, 12,000+ years ago, the cave remained untouched until 2010. Explorers discovered thousands of bones exposed on the cave surface that have been preserved by unchanging conditions for millennia. The significance of these fossils, which include not only bones but bear beds, claw marks and rare peccary tracks, has been verified by independent paleontologists.
