A day-trip through the Medieval landscapeJoin the pilgrim trail for a day through the cultural landscape of Ullensaker. Close toOslo and Gardermoen international airport, yet within a beautiful agricultural lands-cape, visiting one of the most spectacular Early Medieval monuments of NorthernEurope. Start the trip by half an hours train journey from Oslo to Kløfta station.

At Kløfta station, turn east through therailway underpass, and follow Kongs -vingerveien until you join the pilgrim trailat Galgehaugen (the gallow’s hill). Turnnorth along the pilegrim trail. After onekilometre walk you are aproachingUllensaker church. The earliest recordedchurch at this place was built during the12th century. The stone church was dedi-cated to the Norwegian patron saint OlavHaraldsson († 1030) and St. John theBaptist. After a mudslide destroyed thechurch in the 15th centruy, a wooden stavechurch was erected in its place. This struc-ture was replaced in 1768 with a larger,corner-timbered church that survived untila fire in 1952. The present church isdesigned by the famous Norwegian archi-techt Arnstein Arneberg. Arneberg inclu-ded construction elements of the threeearlier churches in the building. Theseappear in the silhuet of the church at dif-ferent angles. A statue of the archaengleMichael can be seen above the door.

Acording to Snorri Sturlasson, Chriti sa-nity was introduced in these parts ofRomerike after the battle of Nitelva, c.1020, where Olav Haraldson conqueredthe local Raumar. Several churches atRomerike are dedicated to St. Olav.

The pilegrim trail continous north fromUllensaker church, until you cross thehighway and railway-line and approachthe farm of Ullern (approximately 2.5 kilo-meters). In bygone years, Ullern functio-ned as a main-road coach station. Thetrail follows Kjerkevegen through theunderpass and left (due south-west), thenturns right at Asperveien.

From this point the trail follows one ofthe oldes known routes between Oslo andNidaros. The walk goes through a variedterrain of ploughed fields and woodland.

After 2 kilometres you approach thefarm of Børke. Several rich grav-finds fromthe first centuries AD have been made inthe area. Up ahead lies Hovin church. Theplace-name Hovin suggests the presenceof an ancient power centre and a focalpoint for pre-Christian cult. You are nowat the heart of the early medievalRomerike, the petty-kingdom (riki-) of theRaumar. After conversion to Christianity, achurch was erected here. The present

church is a corner-timbered cross-chuch,dedicated in 1695. The Hovin farm wasone of the largest landed properties atRomerike during the middle ages. Themajority of the land was in church posse-sion.

Continue along the road past the scho-ol and turn right on Ljøgotvegen; literally“the public road”. Further ahead lies oneof the most impressive monuments of 6thcentury Northern Europe; Raknehaugen(Rakni’s mound). The 15 meter tall barrowis constructed from sand, earth and75,000 lengths of timber. Probably, thebuilding of the monumnet took the con-certed efford of 500 people over 6months.

You have a good view of the landscapefrom the top of the mound. A levelledcemetary of smaller viking age moundshave been documneted on the west sideof the barrow. This was also the site of aprincely hall building, the size of presentbarn. East of the barrow, two smallmounds are still preserved of the cemetarythis side.

It is possbile to enjoy one’s lunch atRaknehaugen or a swim a swim in theneighbouring Lake Ljøgottjern. This is oneof a number of glacial cettle lakes in thearea and a natural reserve. The trail conti-nous to the farmstead of Haug (hillock)through a marked depression in the lands-cape that has been created by travellersover the centuries. At the farmyard thepilgrim trail turns left (north) along themajestic birch alley. Instead, you continuestraight ahead, eventually down hill andthrough an underpass. Follow the ancientfootpath Gropavegen, onto Gardermo -vegen. Ahead is the centre of Jess heim. You can follow Storgata (the main street)to the railway station.

Recent excavations show thatpeople have lived at Husebyfor over 2000 years. The farmhas been the home of weal-thy priests, but also for thepoor, as a building for somedecades was used as a poor-house. Exhibits tell of bothrich and poor in the old rural

society. New exhibitions eachyear. "Huseby" means a well-built farm with many statelyhouses, and the name fits well- not least with the beautifulpark surrounding the houses.Open during the summer sea-son and special events: Seethe museum's website.

National cycle route nr. 7, also knownas Pilgrimsruta (Pilgrim’s route), stret-ches through Romerike. Some of thesouthernmost parts of Mjøstråkk alsocut through the northern end ofRomerike. Countless forest roads andpaths in Romeriksåsen, Østmarka andother wooded areas are superbly sui-ted for experiencing the naturalbeauty of Romerike from a bicycleseat. You can also find marked bicy-cle paths in the municipalities. Many good tips can be found onwww.syklistene.no and on our websites.

A round trip on a bicycle inRomerike – for the whole family,as a day trip or step-by-stepA pleasant round trip in Romerike, with many opportunities to visitattractive locations. Those who feel up to it can try tocycle the entire trip in a single day.For most people it may be better tosplit the trip into several stages, orbring the bicycle on the train forparts of the trip. A bicycle can bebrought on the train at the cost of achildrens’ ticket.Let’s start at Jessheim. From Jessheim, the trail goes to Nordkisa, and thendown to Svanfoss sluice by Vorma.Every Sunday, Elvekongen (“The RiverKing”) leaves from Årnes to Svanfossand back again. It is then possible totake the boat to Årnes. From Årnesthe trail goes to the west side ofGlomma, and the first road to theleft in the direction of Hvam. Here you can visit the Gamle Hvam(“Old Hvam”) museum, as well as adelightful farmer’s shop, “Beite”, atHvam high school, which sells goodlocal food. From Hvam, the path continues inthe direction of Rånåsfoss. AkershusEnergi has built “Energiforum”, aknowledge- and information centreat the Rånåsfoss Power Station. Thetheme of the centre is electricity, andtours must be booked in advance. From Rånåsfoss the trip continuesalong the west side of Glomma, toBingsfoss and Sørumsand.Confident cyclists can try to take thepath alongside Glomma, but there are

parts of the road where it will be neces-sary to climb off the bicycle and push.At Sørumsand we can recommend atrip with Tertitten, the narrow-trackmuseum railway that starts and stopsat Sørumsand. Bicycles are secured atSørumsand station while you take agood old-fashioned train trip. From there you continue to Fetsund, first along the highway, then intomore rural, wooded areas. In Fetsundthe pike burgers are ready on the grillat Fetsund Lenser. A fun museum forthe whole family. From Fetsund the trip continues toLillestrøm. By Åkrene take a rightbefore crossing Leirelva, and cycle onsmaller forest roads to Leirsund. FromLeirsund the trip continues towardsFrogner, Lindeberg and Kløfta viaIhlevegen, around Ullensaker Churchand Randbydalen back to Jessheim.Have a great trip!(text and picture: Sidsel SkjelmerudCockpit KommunikasjonAS
