A REGION OF COMPETENCE AND DIVERSITY

Romerike is a large and compositeregion, while still within an hour’sdrive from Oslo. In spite ofRomerike’s current affiliation with theinternational airport and high-speedtrains, the region has traditionsreaching back far beyond moderntimes, and a diversity that encompas-ses way more than mass transit.

Travelling ThroughRomerike’s HistoryThe Gothic historian Jordanes descri-bed Raumanicae for the first time inAD 550. This is what today is knownas Romerike. For at least 1400 years,Rakni’s Mound has been at the cen-tre of Romerike. Little is knownabout the region before this burialmound, but natural conditions indi-cate that few people lived here befo-re that time. In the later middle ages,Romerike is likely to have been animportant thoroughfare for pilgrimsgoing from Oslo to Nidaros.

Industrial HistoryMillions of years ago, petrified oceanfloor and volcanic activity created thebedrock and minerals of Romerike.Later, rocks like gold ore, emeraldsand soapstone, and minerals likelead, zinc, copper and iron ore havebeen found here. These occurrencesfounded a thriving mining industry, which expanded to iron and glassworks, as well as gold and emeraldmines. The remains of such industriesare today open to the public all overRomerike.

Lumber HistoryAs timber became a sought-aftercommodity in Europe in the 1500s,this became Norway’s most impor-tant export, and the industry expan-ded at Romerike. The rivers doubledas logging transports and energy forsawmills. Several log-sorting facilities(lenser) was established to organisetimber floating.

Transport HistoryAs the timber industry expanded, theneed for better communicationsevolved. Norway’s first railway ope-ned between Christiania (Oslo) andEidsvoll in 1854. Further transportnorthward was by boat on LakeMjøsa, and in 1856 D/S Skibladner, today the world’s oldest paddle stea-mer in continuous use, started ope-rations. The most modern part ofRomerike’s transport history is OsloInternational Airport, which openedat Gardermoen in 1998.

War HistoryFrom the 16th to the 19th century, thepeople of Romerike got to know thechallenge of living between theNorwegian capital and the aggressiveneighbours in Sweden. Several relicsof defensive fortifications remaintoday. Blaker Skanse, the ToverudBauta, Urskog Fort, Fetsund Battery,Høgås Battery, the refugee trail andthe Trandum memorial all bear wit-ness to Romerike’s wartime history.

Trandumskogen (Trandum Woods) inUllensaker was among the first massgraves discovered in Norway afterWorld War II. 173 Norwegians, 6Britons and 15 Russians were execu-ted here. Today, a memorial marksthe site, with a text reading:

IN THE COMBAT FOR FREEDOMDURING THE 1940-1945 WAR173 NORWEGIANS 15 SOVJET-SUBJECTS AND 6 BRITONS WEREHERE IN THE WOODS OF TRAN-DUM EXECUTED BY THE ENEMY

At Kløfta station, turn east throughthe railway underpass, and followKongsvingerveien until you join thepilgrim trail at Galgehaugen (the gal-low’s hill). Turn north along the pile-grim trail. After one kilometre walkyou are aproaching Ullensakerchurch. The earliest recorded churchat this place was built during the 12th

century. The stone church was dedi-cated to the Norwegian patron saintOlav Haraldsson († 1030) and St.John the Baptist. After a mudslidedestroyed the church in the 15th cen-truy, a wooden stave church waserected in its place. This structurewas replaced in 1768 with a larger,corner-timbered church that surviveduntil a fire in 1952. The presentchurch is designed by the famousNorwegian architecht ArnsteinArneberg. Arneberg included con-struction elements of the three earli-er churches in the building. Theseappear in the silhuet of the church atdifferent angles. A statue of thearchaengle Michael can be seenabove the door.

Acording to Snorri Sturlasson,Chritisanity was introduced in theseparts of Romerike after the battle ofNitelva, c. 1020, where OlavHaraldson conquered the localRaumar. Several churches atRomerike are dedicated to St. Olav.

The pilegrim trail continous northfrom Ullensaker church, until youcross the highway and railway-lineand approach the farm of Ullern(approximately 2.5 kilometers). Inbygone years, Ullern functioned as amain-road coach station. The trailfollows Kjerkevegen through theunderpass and left (due south-west),then turns right at Asperveien.

From this point the trail followsone of the oldes known routes bet-ween Oslo and Nidaros. The walkgoes through a varied terrain ofploughed fields and woodland.

After 2 kilometres you approachthe farm of Børke. Several rich grav-finds from the first centuries AD havebeen made in the area. Up ahead liesHovin church. The place-name Hovinsuggests the presence of an ancientpower centre and a focal point forpre-Christian cult. You are now atthe heart of the early medievalRomerike, the petty-kingdom (riki-)of the Raumar. After conversion toChristianity, a church was erectedhere. The present church is a corner-timbered cross-chuch, dedicated in1695. The Hovin farm was one ofthe largest landed properties atRomerike during the middle ages. The majority of the land was inchurch possesion.

Continue along the road past theschool and turn right onLjøgotvegen; literally “the publicroad”. Further ahead lies one of themost impressive monuments of 6thcentury Northern Europe;Raknehaugen (Rakni’s mound). The15 meter tall barrow is constructedfrom sand, earth and 75,000 lengthsof timber. Probably, the building ofthe monumnet took the concertedefford of 500 people over 6 months.

You have a good view of thelandscape from the top of themound. A levelled cemetary of smal-ler viking age mounds have been

Bronze Age and Iron Age CairnsAcross Haneborgåsen in Lørenskog, a system of 12 burial cairns, dating to theLate Bronze Age and Iron Age (c. BC 1000 – AD), are located. A visit to thecairns offers a nice walk along the crest of the hill.

From around 2000 BC, the increasedextraction and use of copper andcopper-alloys forged large exchange-networks across Europe andLevantine areas. Bronze used for per-sonal objects, weapons and items ofsymbolic or ritual importance had tobe imported to Scandinavia.Scandinavian wool, furs and amberwere on the other hand highly pricedcommodities further south. Attemptsto control surplus production andexchange led to the emergence ofsocial elites. The Bronze Age monu-ments at Haneborgåsen are mostlikely the direct result of this socialdevelopment. Several of the monu-ments have been reconstructed inresent years.

During the Late Bronze Age, burialcairns were common. The graves areoften located on hilltops or close toland- or sea routes, with good over-view of the landscape. Some of the

cairns have central stone chamberswhere the deceased were laid torest. The same cairn can compriseseveral subsequent burials.

The burial-customs varied signifi-cantly across the millennium. Largecairns were probably grave markersfor persons of social importance, butcould also signify the land rights of aparticular social group.

The burial-ritual itself was used bythe living to emphasise their powerand social position. The graves couldcontain personal jewellery, toiletteriesor weapons, all carefully selected. Some graves also contain carvedslabs with symbolic imagery. Socialstatus, gender, profession andchanging belief-systems are likely tohave affected the selection of grave-goods and the burial rite. Often, littleis preserved. However human crema-ted bones were found in one of thecairns at Hanborgåsen.

documneted on the west side of thebarrow. This was also the site of aprincely hall building, the size of pre-sent barn. East of the barrow, twosmall mounds are still preserved ofthe cemetary this side.

It is possbile to enjoy one’s lunchat Raknehaugen or a swim a swim inthe neighbouring Lake Ljøgottjern. This is one of a number of glacialcettle lakes in the area and a naturalreserve. The trail continous to thefarmstead of Haug (hillock) through

a marked depression in the landsca-pe that has been created by travellersover the centuries. At the farmyardthe pilgrim trail turns left (north)along the majestic birch alley.Instead, you continue straight ahead, eventually down hill and through anunderpass. Follow the ancient foot-path Gropavegen, onto Gardermo -vegen. Ahead is the centre of Jess -heim. You can follow Storgata (themain street) to the railway station.
