peter brötzmann a lifetime of achievementArchimedes said “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.” Peter Brotzmann’s lever is his enormous sound and aesthetic vision and the fulcrum on which he places it is his art. I know I felt the world move! Peter is not one for gushing, silly sentimentality . . . ”I don’t like that kind of shit!” So I simply say thank you Peter, for helping to extend my childhood. - Joe McPhee
We pay tribute to Peter Brötzmann, who has dedicated his life to sharing an uncompromised musical vision. As one of the first European pioneers of free improvisation Brötzmann has become a major influence on generations of younger musicians all over the world.
On hearing Peter in the early 80’s in New York, a time in the city when playing free was discouraged, William Parker observed: “The sound that he got out of his saxophone - the vibration level of the music - was electrifying and inspiring. Here was a musician playing with such great freedom.” For those who played free, his music was critical. For fifty years he has traveled the world playing in all kinds of formations from solo to orchestra. In any setting he holds nothing back, sharing his music with those who want to feel with all of their senses.
As though fulfilling a destiny, Peter Brötzmann and his music state a strong case: that Improvisation is a form of Composition and that it is Living art. He is real and his music is real from the beginning to the end. Cutting all the superficial ceremonies, he keeps on developing his per-sonal relationship with the earth and the elements as he explores the boundaries of this music.
