peter brötzmann a lifetime of achievementArchimedes said “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.” Peter Brotzmann’s lever is his enormous sound and aesthetic vision and the fulcrum on which he places it is his art. I know I felt the world move! Peter is not one for gushing, silly sentimentality . . . ”I don’t like that kind of shit!” So I simply say thank you Peter, for helping to extend my childhood. - Joe McPhee

We pay tribute to Peter Brötzmann, who has dedicated his life to sharing an uncompromised musical vision. As one of the first European pioneers of free improvisation Brötzmann has become a major influence on generations of younger musicians all over the world.

On hearing Peter in the early 80’s in New York, a time in the city when playing free was discouraged, William Parker observed: “The sound that he got out of his saxophone - the vibration level of the music - was electrifying and inspiring. Here was a musician playing with such great freedom.” For those who played free, his music was critical. For fifty years he has traveled the world playing in all kinds of formations from solo to orchestra. In any setting he holds nothing back, sharing his music with those who want to feel with all of their senses.

As though fulfilling a destiny, Peter Brötzmann and his music state a strong case: that Improvisation is a form of Composition and that it is Living art. He is real and his music is real from the beginning to the end. Cutting all the superficial ceremonies, he keeps on developing his per-sonal relationship with the earth and the elements as he explores the boundaries of this music.

acknowledgementsWe thank all the artists who come together to share their visions, to be a bright light. Every creative act is a stand against that which would desensitize.

Arts for Art appreciates the generous support of the Jacob and Ruth Epstein Foundation, the Phaedrus Foundation, the Hardy Hill Foundation, John Schiek, the New Hampshire Charitable Trust, Whit Dickey and Family.

We thank City Council Members Rosie Mendez and Margaret Chin, State Senator Thomas Duane. This event is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), a State Agency. This program is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. AFA also thanks Ukah Busgith and NYCHA.

For recording support we thank Apple, Tekserve, Avid, TransAudioGroup, and Avenson Audio. We particularly thank Bradley Farberman, Fay Victor, Evan Burton, Eric Wendell, Paul de Lucena, Pete Dragotta, Jon Reichert, Richard and Roberta Berger, James Keepnews, Stephen Haynes and volunteers from WKCR for pitching in when needed. individual donors

Earlier this year AFA reached out to the community with an online petition to help secure a permanent space at Clemente Soto Velez. Many who signed also wrote inspiring words of support:

“It’s about survival!! Creative music need this space, thanks AFA, yes music, Arts is vital!!” - Joelle Leandre, France

“Arts for Art is a great organization with deep roots in and a strong commitment tothe LES community. They deserve a space - at least!!!” - Marc Ribot, NY

We thank you for your signatures and kind words - they’ve strengthened our resolve. However, there is more work to be done. We ask that you Take A Stand with us and contribute; helping to ensure this music not only survives, but has the support to evolve and grow. As an organization AFA presents:

- The Vision Festival- Evolving Music /Evolving Voice Series- In Gardens Fall Series- Youth Outreach/Education Programs

Our work is supported by donations from foundations and government grants, but it simply is not enough. Individual donations are key to the strength and sustainability of this courageous thought-provoking inspiring music and art. AFA needs your Help.

Contributing to AFA is simple, use the enclosed envelope to make your donation or our online form at www.artsforart.org/contribute. If you’d like to take an active role as a donor, you can direct your contribution towards specific programs. We encourage you to join our membership program – the extra support is crucial and comes with the added benefit of discounted or free shows. But the main reason we give is that we want to live in a world where innovative music, dance, poetry and art are available.
