    The magnificent Puppet Show

The whole world is nothing but a magnificent Puppet Show. So says Keralas great poet of satire andoriginator of famous Ottanthullal. According to him,the director of the cosmic show goes on pulling thethreads that make us move our head, hands and feet, that is, dance to his tune. When he pulls out the threads,lo, we fall down dead.

Isnt the whole world then a BOMMAKOLU where crores andcrores of dolls or puppets human beings, animals, birds and count-

less other organisms are made to play their part in a mega cosmic dra-ma. Each man and woman thinks that he /she is the best actor andhis/her acting is the best. Little do we realize we are all puppets andthe one who pulls the threads remains invisible. We have to dance tohis tune and when he pulls the thread, off we fall down dead.

This being a fact, why cant we behave more responsibly, more pleasingly and dance more rhythmically and live more purposefully. Each doll in the bommakolu is a reflection of ourselves as is every cre-ation in the universe. In Sri Sankaras words Viswam dharpanamananagari the world is a mirror. Let us, looking at the dolls in thebommakolu, learn to expand our understanding to include everythingand remain happily attuned to all the creations in the universe.Vasudhaiva kutumbakam is the message that the bommakolu gives.

Meditate on the great truth that we are nothing but puppets inthe Lords hands.

The easiest way to make ourselves healthy is to see thatothers are healthy and the easiest way to make ourselves happy is tosee that others are happy. The tapas and other hard yagas that were

practised in other Yugas do not work now. What is needed in this Yu- ga is giving, helping others. This is one of our greatest duties and you

will find that the more you work, to help others, the more you helpyourselves. But I will tell you in plain language that you work bestwhen you work for others. The best work you ever did for yourselveswas when you worked for others.

    Swami Vivekananda

This was the Yagna spirit translated into practical life. Thiswas the Dharma of the Hindu way of life. It is this spirit of sacrifice that

was corroded by centuries of abuse and misuse with the result that we, as aNation came to be labelled as a nation of lazy, self-centered egoists with thenational idiosyncrasy of personal moksha or liberation.

To see ones own Self as the Self everywhere and out of that awareness de-velop a willingness and capacity to work for others, to put their needs before

gna of the olden days would the rich come forward to make service astatus symbol?

From childhood we start hypnotizing the children that they

should become this, that and so on, not for acquiring the intrinsicwork of human excellence but to acquire more wealth, to live in big-ger and bigger mansions, to surround them with all the parapherna-lia of wealth and affluence, to maintain their position amidst the rat-race of competition, to rise higher and higher to the dizzy heights ofmaterialism.

A change is a must and urgent too. Each home should of-

fer at least one child to serve the society, may be for not all the years,at least for a part of his productive career, be he a doctor, engineer,or anybody. Any home should be proud of this child. In hundredsand thousands, young men and women should come out of theirhomes to serve the poor and the downtrodden. Let them choose anyof the service organizations to work with or on their own individualmerit. That is immaterial. What is needed urgently is service in thetrue spirit of the term. Service in small and big ways should domi-nate our lives and out of it will necessarily flow all the other humanvalues which we have lost during our journey down the countlesscenturies. To re-discover the glory of this Yagna spirit in our smalllives through renunciation and service is the need of the hour.

( This was the first editorial that Didi wrote for Yuva Bharati after joining Kendrain 1982, which had the approval and blessings of Mananiya Eknathji ).
