The Board, with outstanding support from the Virginia Department of Education, has worked tirelessly to provide not only exceptional technical updates but also workshops designed to help with every facet of trade and industrial education. I hope that each of you finds the 2019 conference informative and enjoyable.

This workshop provides teachers with the tools they need to develop, manage, and advise a SkillsUSA chapter in their school or classroom. Participants explore the mission of SkillsUSA, learn to use the multitude of resources available, and engage in hands-on activities. The training utilizes interactive sessions and provides answers to questions such as the following:
● How do I get students involved? ● What is the best way to organize our activities? ● What is new with the Professional Development Program?
(PDP) and the Career Readiness Curriculum (CRC)? ● What is the Chapter Excellence Program (CEP)? ● What materials are available to help the advisor and students?
This is a must for beginning or seasoned advisors wanting to start the school year and better manage an existing school chapter. Cost is $50 per person.

Get a quick and comprehensive overview of SkillsUSA Virginia, where we have been and where we are going. We will recap the past year, including the National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), the state leadership training workshop, advisor training, and more. There will also be a question-and-answer time. New membership kits, handouts, and door prizes are part of this workshop.

This session provides an overview of the Today’s Class online learning platform. Learn about the latest features and ensure you are getting the most out of this program. Key topics will include updates to the Task Tracker, as well as a demo of the multimeter simulations and new reporting tools. Lastly, see a demo of the Today’s Class Technician, which is our new adaptive learning platform.

Explore RA and YRA work-based learning opportunities for students age 16 or older. Students can obtain paid work experience, occupation-specific instruction, and a portable, nationally recognized credential.

Presenter: Jim Jenkins, HUBER Engineered Woods
During this course, participants will participate in discussions, witness a variety of demonstrations, and install components of the building envelope on simulated construction mock-ups. This hands-on experience will address the basic functions of a building envelope. Discussions, demonstrations and hands-on experiences will include: components of a wall assembly, building envelope transitions, moisture management, airflow control, thermal performance, resilient roof systems, and drainage efficiencies. Participants will be equipped to discuss envelope solutions that meet, or exceed current code requirements and address how these products contribute to the performance of the building envelope.
2 – 3 p.m. Making it Work with Students with Disabilities Montpelier
Presenter: Curtis Taylor, Badge Technical Center
Find out what it takes to have successful outcomes for students with learning disabilities. We will review the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). You will also get tips on modifying your instruction, learn the value of attending Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, and explore SkillsUSA competitions designed specifically for competitors with special needs.

Every career and job has one thing in common, the jobs and careers revolve around a facility of some type. These facilities are becoming more sophisticated, more complex, more flexible, more efficient, and more sustainable. The trades and skills that your students are learning will become invaluable as they also learn about the facility that houses the business. Let’s discuss how 1 in 30 students will be in this career, and how they are the future of helping making facilities more sustainable.

This workshop is open to all new and current SkillsUSA district chairs. Past chairs are welcome to attend and learn how to use the SkillsUSA conference management system (CMS). We will provide an overview of how to register competitors, set up contests, print contest rosters, and print name tags and certificates. Using the CMS, you will be able to generate many reports.

Hear firsthand about how SkillsUSA has guided our new state officer team. The new state officers will share icebreakers, stories about how they first got involved in SkillsUSA, and how their membership has helped them grow as leaders. TradeCrews is an online platform built to help students, educators and industry partners come together and make professional connections. The platform has unique features that helps spread the word about your programs, helps engage employers, and helps satisfy several student Verso competencies.
4 – 5 p.m. Honoring CTE with Chapter Excellence Program (CEP) Montpelier
Help your programs receive the honor and recognition they deserve. In this session, we will explore Quality Chapters, Chapters of Distinction, and Models of Excellence. The CEP honors chapter achievement relative to SkillsUSA’s framework of developing personal, workplace, and technical skills embedded in academics. The framework actualizes SkillsUSA’s mission: “to empower members to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible American citizens.”

The Virginia Cyber Range is funded by the Commonwealth to provide courseware and network infrastructure for students and teachers involved in cybersecurity courses in Virginia public high schools and colleges. Our isolated, cloud-based network environments allow for hands-on cybersecurity labs and exercises at no cost to Virginia public schools. Time permitting, a brief demonstration will show highlights of Virginia Cyber Range features.

Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) Premier Pro Certification Training Location: Greenway Trainers: Joe Dockery, Adobe Education Leader Description: Certiport Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) training and certification examination for
trade and industrial education instructors. The ACA is a Virginia Board of Education approved credential that can effectively validate skills in Adobe Premiere Pro. Adobe Premiere Pro is a timeline-based video editing software application that is used in the Television and Media Production course.
Ensuring Safety: Fall Hazard Awareness for the Construction Industry
Location: Merimac Trainers: West Virginia University OSHA-certified faculty Description: Through hands-on application, participants will identify, evaluate, and prevent or
control fall hazards at construction sites. The course focuses on falls to a lower level, not falls to the same level, resulting from slips and falls.
Manufacturing Skills Institute (MSI) Manufacturing Technician Level 1 (MT1) Train-the-trainer Course
Location: Poplar Trainer: Dr. Victor Gray, Executive Director, Manufacturing Skills Institute Description: The MT1 certification course is an intensive three-day train-the-trainer program
designed to teach instructors how to deliver the MT1 Action Learning Lab in a modular or customized format. Instructors will also learn how to demonstrate the 12 MT1 skills standards through hands-on application. This training is for currently licensed trade and industrial education instructors of precision machining, electronics, industrial robotics technology, and industrial maintenance technology.
NCCER Instructor Certification Training Program (ICTP) and Proctor Training Program (PTP) Location: Brandon A Trainers: NCCER Certified Master Trainer Description: The ICTP is designed to certify individuals to teach the NCCER modules and conduct
performance profiles for providing industry-credentialed instruction in accredited training education facilities. Certified instructors can administer module exams through the NCCER test management system (TMS). The PTP is designed to certify individuals to deliver NCCER module exams through the TMS. Curriculum proctors are not teachers and cannot perform any instruction.
OSHA 510 and 500 Construction Industry Standards Trainer Courses Location: Montpelier and Merimac
Trainers: West Virginia University OSHA-certified faculty Description: The OSHA 510 and OSHA 500 courses are designed for Virginia trade and industrial
education carpentry, cabinetmaking, electricity, building trades, masonry, plumbing, and other related CTE instructors who require initial OSHA certification or recertification. To participate in the OSHA 500 course, instructors must bring proof of completion of the prerequisite OSHA 510 course and have five years of construction safety experience. Participants in the four-day OSHA 500 course will be able to teach the OSHA 10- or 30-hour OSHA construction courses for four years. Participants will be provided paper and digital copies of the OSHA 500 instructional materials and more than 80 slideshow presentations on OSHA construction standards.
OSHA 511 and 501 General Industry Standards Trainer Courses Location: Claremont and Montpelier
Trainers: West Virginia University OSHA-certified faculty Description: The OSHA 511 and 501 courses are designed for Virginia trade and industrial
education automotive, barbering, cosmetology, criminal justice, firefighting, graphic imaging, nail technician, public safety, and other related CTE educators who choose to pursue the OSHA General Industry certification. To participate in the OSHA 501 course, instructors must bring proof of completion for the prerequisite OSHA 511 course and have five years of general industry safety experience. Completion of the OSHA 501 authorizes the trainer to conduct 10- and 30-hour General Industry courses for four years in accordance with OSHA Outreach Training Program requirements. Participants will be provided paper and digital copies of the OSHA 501 instructional materials and more than 80 PowerPoint presentations on the OSHA construction standards.
OSHA 502 Update for Construction Industry Trainers Location: Wilton
Trainers: West Virginia University OSHA-certified faculty Description: Current construction instructors who have had the OSHA 500 in the last four years
are eligible to participate in the OSHA 502 Update for Construction Industry Outreach Trainers. These individuals are not required to attend the OSHA 510 if they have a current 500 authorization, as long as the expiration is not more than four years from the training start date.
