A spider lives somewhere in the frame of our back door. I know This, because each morning the spider has spun a beautiful new web; sometimes lit by the sun coming over the tops of the houses, other times glistening with drops of moisture. Its work will almost inevitably be destroyed as the top corner of the door cuts through the delicate web. I’d like the spider to move away, so this daily act of destruction stops happening, – such a move would benefit both of us; the spider could spin in peace and I could leave the house without a pang of guilt. But in the meantime, the spiders work seems to be saying something about the way we organise our lives; we put so much energy into our various projects, almost mindlessly, without taking account of the bigger picture. We spin our dreams and do the best we can but often within narrow horizons. That’s why so many of our days are so frustrating. We can be inflexible, determined that we are in the right with the same sort of stubbornness as the little spider. I read recently about another type of spider – the wolf spider-who lives in the countryside. They spin their webs between grasses rather than hard fixed objects which means that when the wind blows their web can blow too. They can ride the knocks of daily life because of their flexibility; they work with the demands of their environment in a way that is subtle and skilful. We shelter ourselves behind the hard walls of our beliefs, opinions and sometimes creeds only for us to come up against the hard edges of disappointment, disagreement and frustration. Perhaps we would protect ourselves better through softness and vulnerability; through being open to the wonders of the life we are given. The Book of Proverbs has some wise words for us, By wisdom a house is built, by discernment the foundation is laid; by knowledge its storeroom filled with riches of every kind, rare and desirable. That’s the kind of house God wants us to build; not a fortress but a web of beauty spun from the treasures of wisdom, discernment and knowledge. Jonathan Morris associate vicar in the Benefice

3. Village plan update - following the development of the village plan, the parish council
are asking for any volunteers to participate in a group to look at the feasibility of planning
a village hall for Haselbury. This was raised as a key issue in the village plan itself, so we
want to see what the possibilities are. At this stage your commitment would not be much
more than taking part in the feasibility group which will meet monthly for 5 or 6
months. The first meeting is planned for 7:30pm on Wednesday 8th October. If you are
interested in taking part please contact Matthew Bryant
on [email protected] or on 73454
4. Telephone Box. The Parish Council would like to repair and maintain the telephone
box on North Street. If you are able to help in anyway with this, or indeed have any ideas
for potential uses please contact Joanne Slicker on [email protected] or 07891
220469.
5. Dog Owners. Please can we ask that you take care while walking your furry friends.
Lots of children play in the village so it would be helpful for their safety if you could
ensure your dogs are under control on leads and that you clear up any mess for them.
Sponsored Walk Thank You
Our Sponsored Walk was a great success!
A sizeable number of people, including five children, turned out in the most beautiful
warm autumn weather and enjoyed many different local views, good company and
healthy exercise. Two energetic dogs gave extra pleasure to everyone, especially
6-year old Olivia, who skipped and ran practically the whole way.
Beatrice refreshed us with tea and cake in the Rectory garden. A very big thank you to
the walkers, and of course to their sponsors.
We do not yet know the final amount raised – it will be published on the church notice
board in due course. We do know, however, that the chief organizer Margaret Rendall
personally raised over £600. Hats off to her enthusiasm and energy. Thank you,
Margaret.

The problem is that pandas are solitary animals. There aren’t many of them, so they rarely
meet. Females can only mate one day a year. The odds are against them breeding. Then
there’s the size. Adult pandas are HUGE, taller than a human. The clue’s in the name,
Giant Panda. New born pandas are tiny – as small as a mouse. So babies can be born and
get squashed by mum. And with such thick fur and such small offspring, zoos really can’t
tell if a female is pregnant. Add the risk of poaching………. No wonder they are an
endangered species. Angela Pitt introduced WI members to a panda rescue centre in the
heart of China, where she spent time as a panda-care volunteer. Amazing place, amazing
animals, amazing people.

Reading with Rowan
Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has written a wonderful introduction
to the Christian Faith called Being Christian. Divided into 4 chapters – Baptism, Bible,
Eucharist and Prayer – it lends itself to be read and reflected on together.
I propose that we meet in the Autumn, starting on the 8th October for an introduction. We
will then meet on the 15th and 29th October and the 12th and 26th November. We will start
at 7.30pm and be sure to finish no later than 9.00pm. The first meeting will take place at
the Rectory North Perrott.
The only commitment will be to buy and read the book in time for each session. It is
published by SPCK. It would be helpful to have some idea of numbers, so if you are
interested please let me know Tel 72356 email [email protected]

We have welcomed 16 new children into this school this term and
they are already participating in all the activities of the school day.
We hope they continue to enjoy their time here. We are delighted to hear all our
‘old Year 4’ children are having fun in their new schools.
The very first week of term seemed uneventful with all the children settling
back into the school routine. Both classes produced and signed their new Class
Charters and made a start on the new curriculum. The second week was far more
exciting as an OFSTED inspector and HMI came in to inspect the school! The
children responded brilliantly and the report will be published in a few weeks.
As it is the beginning of a new school year we are again hoping to increase the
number of volunteers in the school. We would particularly like to recruit anyone
who can listen to individual children read between 9:00 and 9:30 any weekday
morning. It is such a benefit for the children to have different people to read
to, they do enjoy discussing their books. Please contact the office if you would
like to help out.
During November we will be having a Health Week when the children will take
part in fun activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. If you have any expertise
in this field and would be willing to help out please do contact the office.
If you would like to see photos of some of our activities please do have a browse
through our website at www.haselburyplucknettschool.co.uk .

HARVEST DONATIONS This year, St Michael and All Angel’s Church has decided to give their Harvest cash donation to FRRME, the remarkable charity run by St George’s Church in Baghdad. Any additional donations from the village can be handed in to Brian Butt,
Cobleigh, Claycastle. Please make any cheques payable to St Michael & All Angels.
St George’s Church runs an extensive FOOD RELIEF PROGRAMME from the compound in central Baghdad. Here families can come and receive groceries and household items from the relative safety of the church grounds. Every week more than 500 Iraqis flock here to receive the food relief parcels, which support their wider families, many of whom are struggling with poverty, unemployment and hardship. In a country blighted by corruption, inefficiency and sectarian division St George’s seeks to serve others in a practical way. In offering services for no payment its CLINIC can bypass any opportunity for funds to be mishandled and people to be denied treatment for financial reasons. “Our aim is for the clinic at St George’s to be a beacon of medical excellence through unity as our medical team includes Christian, Sunni and Shia staff – all local Iraqis – who want to see their community reconciled. They serve side-by-side to provide free care for everyone, equally. Patients can see the doctor, a dentist, have lab tests and collect prescription medicine, all at one place on the same day. Even the local hospital now refers patients to us.” Around 2000 patients come to the Clinic each month.
Haselbury Preschool
Preschool said goodbye to seven children at the end of the summer term. Children sang
songs and nursery rhymes for parents and received a leavers book. This was followed by a
Preschool family picnic at The Park which was a fun time for all.
Children returning to and new children joining are settling well. We have been talking
about apples, picking them up from under the tree, apple printing, and making apple
crumble - children chop their own apples and make their crumble topping. We also put
apples in water -- did they float or sink??
Places are available at Preschool, children welcome from age 2. For more information
phone Sue Turner 07786904191 during session time or 01460 73873 other times.
Rural Isolation and Poverty Living in the countryside certainly has its advantages. Yet while the ‘rural idyll’ holds true for some people, with a sparse population and larger distances between towns and villages, living in rural England can present unique challenges for older people. For example, public transport is a lifeline to older people, connecting them to family, friends and the community and enables access to health, social care and other key services. But rural transport has been badly hit by funding cuts, leading to reductions in scheduled bus and train services. In general older people living in rural areas enjoy better health than those living in urban areas, but they can face difficulties in accessing health and social care services due to distance, lack of public transport and services not working together. Rural areas are also ageing faster than urban areas, so demand for health and social care services is rapidly increasing. Fuel poverty is a huge problem across England, but it is particularly common in rural areas. The ‘chocolate box’ country cottage is hard to heat, and many villages don’t have mains gas, so household energy bills are on average 27% higher than in urban areas. Broadband access is crucial to the social and economic development of rural communities, but coverage and speed of internet access is much worse than it is in urban areas. People in the country experience the same financial problems as people in towns and cities, but have additional challenges, like higher living costs and having to travel further to the nearest cash point, bank or shop. Poverty can lead to financial exclusion from local activities. Like poverty and deprivation, loneliness and social isolation in rural areas can be hidden. However both exist, and older people are particularly vulnerable to them. If you want to know more about deprivation and demographics in your parish go to http://www.bathandwells.org.uk/churchesandparishes/parish-spotlights What are the real solutions? Village Agents have proved very positive in a pilot in some areas of Somerset, and continue to play a key role in flood affected communities, providing information, advice and support, and helping to develop new community initiatives. Bath and Wells Rural Life Group is now working closely with the village agent initiative and many rural churches are offering gathering places at eg coffee stop meetings. As a Christian, I believe we are each called to have a genuine care for our neighbours. Often a huge difference can be made simply by taking time to invite isolated individuals for a meal, offer lifts or help with volunteer car schemes, use of your computer, or just a regular chat. Young families on a tight budget might have similar needs. Jesus was never too busy to turn aside from his journeying to spend time with people on the edge – maybe because he saw it as central to his gospel message. At a time of harvest thanksgiving God calls us to be generous with our time and resources. But its not just older people who can feel isolated in the countryside. Imagine being the only child of your age in a village? Our neighbourhood statistics suggest that is not uncommon, and with smaller families in this generation, a childhood can become solitary. How valuable, even a small youthclub can be for such youngsters. Also teenagers and young adults living in remote country locations face the dual challenges of meeting a partner and finding work, and yet they are the future of village life. We can all encourage them, their ideas and energy, and help put them in touch with others of the same age or interests. As always the generations have much to learn from each other! A welcome return to Malcolm, a frequent speaker to the Gardening Club. Malcolm delivered an
interesting talk with plenty of Photographs and vis aids.
He gave practical advice on where to site rockeries and alpine beds to obtain the best results.
The many types of alpine bed rockeries were illustrated and discussed e.g. Rockery/Scree
Garden, Raised Alpine bed down to Sinks and troughs.
There are many types of stone available but probably the best results are got from Limestone.
An interesting choice for a small feature would be Tuffa, a very 'holey' and porous form of
limestone. If creating a rockery/Alpine bed from scratch the soil, even if imported must be
totally weed free. Thugs like couch grass are extremely difficult to clear from a completed
feature.
Plants for rockeries were illustrated with an eye to giving them some controlled height by the
use of small shrubs e.g. dwarf hebes.
Heathers appear to be coming back into fashion and there is certainly room for them in a
rockery. Heathers are very easy to grow and give all year round interest. There are a number of
Erica heathers that are lime tolerant but the Calluna species are lime intolerant so need to be
planted into acid pH soils. If not clipped after flowering they can become woody and straggly. If
you have a large woody heather you can replant the whole heather in a deep hole so the soil
level is up to the green growth. This can be left to grow away.
After the talk, the plants used as illustrations were offered for sale at attractive prices!
The annual dinner took place on the 24th and the usual excellent food was enjoyed by 35
members and, whilst there was no formal entertainment, other than the raffle, a lot of chat was
involved. Another good evening.
New members and visitors always welcome at the monthly meetings. For more information

WEATHER NOTES The mean temperature of 15.4C was 1.5C lower than average, in fact it was the coolest Au-
gust mean temp since 1986. Last year the temp only fell below 20C on one occasion, this year
it was below on 16 days.
There were 23 rain days with the total of 101.3mm(3.9 inches) this being 152% of normal.
The 190 sun hours was only just below average. John Kellaway (74122)

North Perrott Cricket Club
Firstly a big thank you to everyone who helped put on and manage cricket
over the 90 or so games hosted at Perrott this year. For a club of our size
to run 4 senior sides, 5 youth teams and act as host for both Somerset and
Dorset representative cricket is a great tribute to our army of volunteers.
Although the season is now over, the 1st XI skipper is already planning for life in the West
of England Premier League with pre-season nets starting in October. Does it never end?
Before we start looking too far ahead however a few dates for the diary.
The club dinner, a 3 course affair, with music afterwards takes place on Saturday 18th
October. Tickets are £20 which represents excellent value & can be booked via me at
The club’s fireworks night, still the noisiest and best event around, takes place on Saturday
8th November, pay on the gate.
And the club’s AGM, your opportunity to take over the club, is on Wednesday 19 Nov..
We look forward to seeing you at some or all of the above.

“Never Such Innocence Again:
The First World War through the eyes of Artists and Poets” The new season at Neroche DFAS opens with John Iddon’s moving lecture ‘Never Such
Innocence Again: The First World War through the eyes of Artists and Poets’.
Some of the most abiding and poignant memories of World War One come from artists
including the Nash brothers, C.R.W.Nevinson, William Orpen, and Stanley Spencer (and, on
the ‘other side’, Grosz, Kirchner, Beckmann and Dix) and poets such as Wilfred Owen,
Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves. As well as looking at how these artists and writers
responded to the war itself the talk will also examine how the work of some of them was
changed completely and affected their art and poetry long after the war was over.
John Iddon is a lecturer and guide at both Tate Britain and Tate Modern. He has lectured to
numerous art societies, to the National Trust and the Peggy Guggenheim Gallery in Venice
as well as on cruise ships.
The lecture will be given in the theatre at Dillington House, and will begin at 7.15. Wine,
beer, soft drinks and coffee will be available beforehand. Visitors are welcome to attend up
to two meetings per season for a suggested donation of £5 per visit; there is no need to book.
