Early Dismissal

As most parents are aware, every 20 school days, we have a Wednesday where students are released at 12:00 to allow teachers and EA’s to meet and plan. On those days, students still have regular classes—they are just shortened—so it is very important that stu-dents still attend. We have noticed that some students regularly miss the early dismissal days, so they are missing important instruction, tests, and assignments on those days. Classes as usual still occur, so they need to come. If you need to make appointments for those days, please try to schedule them for the afternoon. Attendance matters!

Thank you so much to everyone who supported the book

fair. It was a huge success. This fair had the best

sales of any of the fairs! Once again we will be able

Campobello School is committed to educate, motivate, and em-

Grade 2

We have had a busy month in grade 2! Every Friday

we have flashlight Friday where we do read to self

with flashlights. Everyone is working hard practicing

their reading. In writing we are focusing on ideas and

developing our ideas. We also read and write some po-

etry. This usually happens on Friday as well. In math

we are still working on the same concepts as last

month but we are doing so with numbers to 100 now.

We almost have counting by 10’s from different start-

ing points down pat! We also have been making repeat-

ing patterns and have started growing patterns. We

are counting by 2’s starting on an odd number as well.

In you and your world we have become little scientists!

We are examining the lifecycle of a mealworm. We

have examined them closely and made predictions. We

will continue to do this and observe the changes the

mealworm goes through during its lifecycle. Everyone

one loves being a budding scientist!

Hello Grade 3! Grade 3 We have been working very hard on our reading and writing as

well as continuing our math unit on Numbers to 1000 this month. I am very proud of the hard work students are doing to achieve their individu-

al goals!

This week has been an exciting one to see everyone participate in the activi-ties such as sport day, multiple day and pajama day!

Just a reminder that winter is in the air and warm gear makes recess more enjoyable for all students.

The literacy concepts we are working on are: counting words in sentences, clapping syllables, saying a rhyming word, letter names and the sounds of the letters that make the words. We have been reading words with the short “a” sound!- rat, pan, and, tad, sad… :) It’s exciting!

In math, any games with dice would help us. Soon I will be sending home a list of new con-cepts and we will get report cards with assess-ment results.

Grade 4/5

French: Grade 4 and 5 students have been working hard these past two months at learning new vocabu-lary, essential sentences and practicing talking about themselves. They each completed a writing about themselves. What a wonderful job they did!!

Math: Grade 5 is now working on Pattern and Rela-tions unit. At home the students can be looking for visual patterns , or discuss how you use patterns in your daily life.

The grade 8 class is almost

through their first unit on Flight and we will be

doing a lot of hands on projects to try to deepen

our understanding of flight and an inquiry activity

about paper airplanes.

The 6/7 class has been learning about ecosys-

tems, abiotic and biotic factors and they even

built some habitats for earthworms. This month

we will observe the habitats to see if we can dis-

cover how the biotic and abiotic factors interact!

To begin, in Mrs. Whittier’s tech class the students

are exploring digital citizenship, choosing com-

puters, and many other technology related sub-

jects through modules.

In French, the classes have been working on Fa-

mous Canadians projects. They have researched

and created a PowerPoint about a famous Cana-

dian they have chosen. They will be presenting

these in French to the class. We will be writing

about a person who is important in our lives and

why for our next project.

Art class has been a blast in Mrs. Whittier’s class,

we have created scarecrow, pumpkin and zentan-

gle leaves. Have a great month of November!

Middle School Math Grade 6/7 Math-Students in grade 6 and 7 have just finished up their first unit test. I have

had lots of questions from parents about how to do the “new” math. It is very hard for us adults who learned the “old fash-ioned” way because we need to overcome previously taught methods; whereas these students are just learning for the first time. Multiplication and division for us “oldies” was just a process putting in magic zeroes or multiplication symbols as place holders but students now are expected to understand. For example, students should know that a number like 2.3x5.4 should be somewhere around 2x5=10. In the “olden” days we would have multiplied, used a magic zero for whatever reason and counted our decimal places and stuck the decimal in. These students have learned a different method and as parents and teachers, in order to help them, we must learn this new way. Hence the term I keep hearing “new” math. I sympathize with you and appreciate your input and questions! I am so thankful for those who are trying to learn this new method so they can help in the learning process.

Here is a suggestion for when your child brings home something like long division, now referred to as “Super 7” or multi-plication and you don’t know how to help them. You can just go to www.youtube.com and in the search bar type what you are trying to learn to do. If you can’t find a video just send me a quick message and I will send you a link to a video with a method similar to the way I am teaching. For example, for those who want to understand the “new” way of multiplying, go to Youtube and type “double digit multiplication using break apart” and you will see videos that will explain it. I hope this helps, and please remember “We are in this together!” I will help wherever I can, just ask.

I am available for extra help most days at noon and after school, so please encourage your child to seek extra help if they need to. Mrs. Searles

Theme of the month: Respect

From the World of Mathematics

Math 9 students are working right away on surface area of rectan-gular prisms and soon going to be working on various other shapes soon. Diagrams such as cylinders resting on rectangular prisms require a lot of computations and these students are doing a great job. This is a very useful unit for real life application so if you are looking to find the cost of painting a room or a building any of these students would be able to help.

NFR 10 students are coming to an end in the radical unit and soon will be having a test. We are nearing the half way mark of the course so students should check Engrade and seek extra help after school or at noon when needed. This course will be followed by Geometry, Measurement and Finance 10.

Those in Foundations 11 are finding out how to find how high a

ball went, how long it took to land, what time it reached its max.

Bonjour!!

The 9/10 class has been working through the “Big Screen” unit and we will be wrapping up our second mini-project about movie genres and the values that we learn from them. We will then be discuss-ing commercialization within movies and outside of the movies. This will all lead up to the final pro-ject which we will also begin this month.

High School English

In Grades 10, 11 and 12 English, we have started a survey of the English language, starting with the ear-liest example of English literature—Beowulf. Students are learning some Viking folklore, and seeing what Old English really looks like.

In Grade 9, we are reading some short stories and poems focused on the theme of “Doing the Right Thing”. Stu-dents will be learning terms and techniques in writing to build up their English repertoire.

This is the last week for this term … Make sure you get all of your missing assignments / projects completed this week for inclusion in this term’s marks.

Work on the yearbook is coming along nicely! Our Grad class may be small but they are working hard to bring you the best CICS yearbook for 2017. This is the last week for Ads to come in.

The Science 10 students are learning how to name and write formulas for chemical compounds. The Physics 11 class is working on analyzing forc-es and how they influence the movement of ob-jects. In Human Physiology, we are examining the cardiovascular system and how to keep it healthy.

Athletics Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Soccer Team for their great season this year! Thank you to the coaches Pauline and John for volunteering their time. This was greatly appreciated. Varsity Home Openers The varsity girls basketball will have their home opener this month, Wednesday Nov 16. The girls tip off at 5:30. Nov 22 the girls and boys both play, the girls will be tipping off at 6:00 and the boys will start at 7:30. Come out and support the Viking Teams!

Mrs. Mitchell

In grade 4/5 Phys-Ed we have been having a lot of fun meeting our outcomes of travelling,

balances, and rotations! As you can see by our pictures the students were challenged to cre-

ate& perform movement tasks and sequences using many different poses or sequences!

Some of our classes were outside in the beautiful sunshine and some were in the gym. We

have also spent a lot of time discussing how we can use our strengths or gifts to help others.

We discussed how being given a gift we have also been given the responsibility to share our

gift with others. We may do that by teaching or helping others that may need extra prac-

tice with a certain skill. I am pleased to say that the gym and playground appear to be a hap-

pier place when we are helping on another!

The Substitute

Hurray! We heard our teacher couldn’t make it today! Instead, we’ll have a substitute—

we’ll make her earn her pay.

Dylan will spit spit-balls, and Richard will eat chalk. Brooke will poke Jack, and all of us

will talk.

We smiled and laughed with pleasure as these thoughts filled every head. Until we

found out our teacher sent the principal in-

stead!

What this poem means

to me:

This poem reminds me of memories of the past 13 years at CICS. Ms. Lee sat us down one day and asked us to brain-storm some old mem-oires as a class for the yearbook. We could hardly think of anything because we have so many that we can’t remem-ber them all. Every day and every class in the run

of a day is a memory for this class. There is al-ways some-thing inter-esting hap-pening in the class. I’d have to say most of the good mem-

ories are with Mr. Conley. He could tell you some

good stories of my class, all good stories.

My dreams

In my life I have had many dreams - some stupid and some farfetched. One dream I have always had is to be-come some type of forest-er—anywhere from a ranger to harvesting or management. I have always cared for the

wild, and I seem to have always had a natural touch in the wild. During my life, when I was growing up, I was always constantly building forts or just enjoying the wilderness, and I’d like to help my kids have the same experience in a

healthy and clean environment.

Some reasons I would love to do this is because I have always loved the woods, and being in the woods, be-cause of all the sounds and little creatures. One of my main reasons for wanting to be a forester is so I could preserve the wild for my kids, and help the ecosystems grow and be-come healthy habitats for all the animals and their children, as well as my own children. If the wilderness or our ecosys-tems become over-populated with animals, or too depopu-lated or polluted, we will lose the great features it brings this world such as beautiful birds. Even for our kids growing up catching frogs; if we lose this from stupid little things such as littering or big things like oil spills, we will not be able enjoy

these features.

In other words, if we keep

tearing the world down around us,

there will be nothing left for our

kids and grandkids. When my kids

grow up I hope they see the wil-

derness like I do and take the same

actions I did and help preserve it

for their kids and everyone around

them. I love nature and we should

respect it as we do our lives and

others.

Grade 9 students were given the assignment to write a poem titled “Where I’m From”, and they did a mag-nificent job!! Here are some tributes to the beautiful place where we live:

Where I’m from by Garrett

Where I’m from, the sound of the fog horn

is what wakes me up. Late night walks

with friends, and “everyone meet at

Pollock cove we should all hang out.” If

the wind isn’t blowing, we know some-

thing isn’t right. Many of my elementary

days were spent with scraped knees and

climbing trees. Long winter nights pray-

ing it’d be a snow day. I am from gener-

ations of fishing and cold water that

surrounds the island we live on. I am

from summer night bonfires and tank

after tank of gas through the Raptor 80.

Days spent at Bam’s playing basketball,

and getting friends together to hang out

on the wharf. I am from a place where

when we get bored we build a tree

house, and when it’s complete we start

another one. I am from long boring days

that turn into fulfilled days spent with

family and friends. I am from rocky

shoreline and refreshingly cold water

which borders us from the United

States. I am from Mulholland point light,

to Head Harbor light. From the herring

that swim through the icy cold waters,

to the seagulls that fly over our heads is

where I’m from.’’

I am from the North Roaders to the Wilson’s Beachers, From the meet me at JRP at 3:45, and late nights riding with the boys, From hunting deer and shooting bear, I am from my 3 favourite places: Cathance Lake and Pleasant Lake where I like to ride the wake. And the hunting camp where I call home and you have to drive a couple miles to get service unless you have a booster. I am from cutting trees and building tree forts, From late night bonfires with the crew To shooting squirrels with Garrett daylight till dark. I am from riding BMX at Larry’s plant whenever we could, I am from the jumping the KX 65 from day light till dark, From when I ripped the lawn up on the dirt bike dad would tell me if he didn’t want a lawn he wouldn’t have planted one. I am from playing GTA 4 till 5am, From hot wheels to matchbox, And best of all I’m from the Lanks and the Jacksons.
