VIII. Memorials A. CLERGY Rev. Russell "Neil" Anderson, age 84 and retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away October 17, 2012. Born November 15, 1927, Rev. Anderson was the seventh child of eight born to Byron G. and Gladys Neilsen Anderson, on a farm north of Lapel, Indiana. He attended and graduated from Lapel High School, Class of 1945. He entered Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University) in Marion in 1947 and graduated in 1952 with an Associates Bachelor degree. In the fall of 1952, he entered Bonebreak Theological Seminary (now United Theological Seminary) and graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. While at Marion College, Neil married D. Marilyn Gibson June 4, 1950, at Trinity Methodist Church, in Lapel, Indiana. To this union were born three children, Xen Harvey Anderson (Corunna, Indiana), Russell Bruce Anderson (Van Buren, Indiana), and Laura Miriam Mort (a teacher missionary in Japan). He was blessed with ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In 1986, Rev. Anderson met Zuleika (Zekie) Hayden and married her May 15, 1987 at Crystal River United Methodist Church, Crystal River, Florida. They served in youth camps, bible conferences, and camp meetings in both United States and Canada. His wife Luella preceded him in death in 2004. He is survived by son, Martin G. Bradford of Apache Junction, Arizona. Memorial services were held at later date. Rev. Macklyn Bradish of Frankfort, Indiana, 77, retired member of the Indiana Conference, died on March 29, 2013. Survivors include: one son, Charles (wife Cheryl) Bradish of San Diego; two step-sons, Mark (wife Carol) Harrison of Tipton, and Randy (wife Sherry) Harrison of Kokomo; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Rev. Russell "Neil" Anderson, age 84 and retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away October 17, 2012. Born November 15, 1927, Rev. The Service of Remembrance was held on October 31, 2012, in the Auditorium Chapel of Westminster Woods, St. Johns, Florida. Private interment took place at Serenity Gardens in Largo, Florida.

Rev. Richard Lee Bennett passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 11:23 a.m. at his residence at Grace Village Retirement Community of Winona Lake, Indiana at the age of 83. He was born on February 22, 1929 in Wabash, Indiana to Glenn Jay Bennett and Irene Pearl (Hipskind) Bennett. On July 3, 1951 he married Louise Mae (Drain) Bennett, who passed away on April 24, 2008. Richard graduated from Wabash High School in Wabash, Indiana then graduated from Marion College, Marion, Indiana and Methodist Theological School in Ohio. Rev. Stan R. Buck, 52, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at his home after an 18 month courageous battle with a brain tumor. Born in Muncie, Indiana, he graduated from Muncie North Side High School. He was an Emens Scholar at Ball State University and graduated with a B.S. degree in Economics. He received his Master of Divinity Degree from Oral Roberts University and his Doctorate of Ministry from Asbury Theological Seminary. In 1987, he became the founding pastor of Sonrise Church. A week prior to his death, he was honored by the Sonrise Community for 25 years of faithful service. Camp Adventure is where Stan received his call to ministry as a camper. He loved attending camp and spent many summers directing camps for the United Methodist Church. He was loved by the youth and children of Sonrise Church and will always be remembered for the exciting chapel services he led for the Sonrise preschool. He participated in mission work in Kenya, Burma and Haiti,

serving as a board member of Jesus in Haiti. He was gifted in leadership and served on many boards and committees. Some of these included Conference Church Development Committee, Conference Camp Board, and Vice President of the Fort Wayne District Church Builders. He was also part of the Church Planter Assessment Team for the United Brethren and Missionary Church. He has mentored many pastors through his coaching network called Windsights Consulting. He has taught classes for Taylor University, Huntington University, Indiana Wesleyan University and the Pastoral Leadership Institute. He loved to play basketball and was a former coach for AGBL and former Assistant Girls Basketball Coach at Homestead High School. He treasured time spent with his family at Lake Wawasee and was an avid sailor.

Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Kathleen; daughters, Stephanie (Kyle) Thomas of Denver, Colo. and Ashley (Justin) Waterson of Fort Wayne; father, Charles Buck of Portland, Indiana; mother, Lucille Harris of Muncie, and his toy poodle, Quincy. His first grandchild, Rowan Stanley Thomas, was born Dec. 12, 2012. A service celebrating the life of Stan was held Nov. 24, 2012, at The Chapel in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Burial followed in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.

Rev. David Cummings of Newbern, Indiana, 61, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died Nov. 8, 2012. Survivors include: daughter, Krysta Jo Cummings of Decatur Georgia; sister, Susan Cummings of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and brother, T. Earl Cummings of Gulf Breeze, Florida.

A celebration of life service was held on Nov. 12, 2012, at the Newbern United Methodist Church in Columbus, Indiana.

Rev. Larry Curtis of Yorktown, Indiana, 74, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013. Larry was born March 2, 1938, in Leesburg, Virginia. He grew up in the Washington, D.C. area. He attended Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, where he met Nancy the week she arrived as a new freshman in 1958. It was "love at first sight" and less than two years later they were married on June 25, 1960. Larry attended Gordon Palmer Seminary in Philadelphia. He was ordained an Elder in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and transferred to the Indiana Conference in 1966.

A memorial service was held on Feb. 23, 2013, at College Avenue United Methodist Church in downtown Muncie. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Curtis.

Rev. Ivan Blaine Emily, 85, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, passed away on May 4, 2012, at Select Specialty Hospital in Beech Grove, following a brief illness. Born February 11, 1927, he was the son of Ivan Cortez and Virginia F. (Hisey) Emily in Harrison County, Indiana. He answered the call to preach in 1948 and began attending Indiana University in 1949 and graduated in 1953. He entered Candler School of Theology at Emory University and graduated in 1955. Rev. Emily returned to Indiana to join the (then) Indiana Methodist Conference, where he was accepted as a probationary member (Deacon) in 1955. He was ordained as an Elder in 1957.

Emily, Ivan

Rev. Emily was known for his wonderful sense of humor. Family and friends were often on the receiving end of his gentle teasing. He liked a good laugh at a funny story, especially if it was at the expense of someone else's dignity, but he was never malicious about it. He was a

member of the Optimist Club in Evansville and Rockport He was a member of the IU Varsity Club. He assisted with the

Spencer County Ministerial Society in establishing a released time religious education course. He wrote a curriculum for that course which he self - published. He was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears, and IU basketball, while harboring a natural inclination to not root for Purdue. Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Sheley Emily, whom he married in 1986; daughter, Myra Anne (Emily) Lowe, and her husband Robert; stepsons, John Blaine Sheley, and his wife Judy, and Daniel Lee Sheley; three step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held May 10, 2012, at Gill Chapel. Revs. Marvin Cheek and David Blystone officiated. Burial followed in Bethel South United Methodist Church Cemetery in Washington, Indiana.

Rev. Sheldon Garriott of Franklin, Indiana, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died Nov. 29, 2012. He was born in Scottsburg, Indiana, to Homer and Christina Garriott. He married Faye Noreen Quartes in August of 1955. He attended Garrett theological Seminary.

Garriott, Sheldon

He is survived by his wife and two children, Susan Cantrell and Mark Garriott, and four grandchildren. Sheldon loved nature and God’s wonderful creation. Photography was one of his hobbies. He was also very gifted in bible teaching and study. A memorial service was held on Dec. 15, 2012, at Southport United Methodist Church, Indianapolis, Indiana. Burial was in Mt. Carmel cemetery in Scottsburg, Indiana.

Rev. John Gaus of Bloomington, Indiana, 88, a retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died March 23, 2013, in a head-on car collision. He was ordained into the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). During this time, he also earned a Masters in Theology from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. In 1963, he moved to Madison, Wisconsin, to serve as Field Director for the Wisconsin Council of Churches as he was always passionate about ecumenical work. In 1970, he earned a Ph.D. in Adult Education from the University of Wisconsin. He was a professor of Adult Education at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia; and Morehead University, Morehead, Kentucky. Later, he returned to his beloved ecumenical work as Executive Director of the United Religious Community in South Bend, Indiana. In his final employment, he joined the United Methodist Church as a pastor. Survivors include his wife Jessica Gaus; children,

Kathie Gaus-Woollen of Wilmington, Delaware, Donna Gaus of Malacatos, Ecuador, Evan Gaus of Temple, Texas and Paula Turk of Elkhart, Indiana; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held April 6, 2013, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Indiana.

Robert Walter Gingery, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference and former senior minister of the United Community Church (United Church of Christ) in Sun City Center, Florida, died on Friday, October 12, 2012, at the age of 92. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on December 15, 1919 to Walter and Clara Gingery. He graduated from George Washington High School in Indianapolis. He later graduated from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, and the Boston University School of Theology. After graduating from college and prior to entering seminary, he married Annis Elizabeth Baldwin of Kokomo, Indiana. In his first church, now the United Methodist Church of Edinburgh, Indiana, his ministry focused on meeting the needs of the soldiers of near-by Camp Atterbury, as they prepared to deploy to the front in the Second World War. In 1954, while he was serving the church in New Albany and only nine years after the end of World War II, he exchanged pulpits with a minister in Frankfurt, Germany, making him the

first minister from Indiana to be involved in such an exchange. While he was serving in the pulpit at Gobin Memorial Methodist Church, he was granted an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. His last church in Indiana, before moving to Sun City Center, was the First Methodist Church in Bloomington, Indiana.

Gingery, Robert

Dr. Gingery was the fourth of six children, and four of his siblings preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of seventy years, Annis Elizabeth, his three sons, Richard Cameron and his wife Suze of Ridgway, Colorado, Robert Gerald of Sun City Center and Stephen Thomas of Noblesville, Indiana. He is also survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren

Rev. Kenneth T. Holdzkom, 92, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference and father of the Rev. Stephen P. Holdzkom, pastor of Ford Street United Methodist Church in Lapel, Indiana, passed away July 21, 2012, at Elmcroft Assisted Living following a brief illness. He was born October 26, 1919, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the son of Joseph and Bertha (Jeffries) Holdzkom, and graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1938. After high school, Kenneth attended and graduated from Taylor University. From there he went on to earn his master’s degree from Christian Theological Seminary. On June 23, 1946, he married Juanita June Hurst and together they shared 64 years of matrimony until she passed away in 2010. He served many congregations throughout the state. He also enjoyed model railroads and painting.

Holdzkom, Kenneth

His survivors include three children: Stephen Holdzkom (wife, Deborah), Lapel; Lois Holdzkom, Brownsburg; and Marianne Holdzkom (husband, Albert Churella), Atlanta, Georgia; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Juanita Holdzkom. A memorial service was held on July 30, 2012, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory in Muncie with Pastor Gordon Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Elm Ridge Cemetery.

Rev. Earnest “Ernie” M. Howard, Jr., retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, passed away on August 4, 2012, at IU Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis. He was born May 18, 1944, at Camp Atterbury, Edinburgh, Indiana, to Ernest M. Howard, Sr., and Louise Sylvia Howard King.

Howard, Earnest

Ernie was a United States Marine, served in Vietnam from 1964 to 1965 and was honorably discharged in June of 1969; he then worked in the architectural field until the mid-1970s; and then answered the call into ministry. He went back to school to obtain his undergraduate degree at Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky, then a master's degree from United Theological Seminary, in Dayton, Ohio; Ernie then went on to serve the Lord for thirty-five years. He was married on September 19, 1964, to Sandra London in Gainesboro, Tennessee. Mrs. Howard survives.

Besides his beloved wife of forty-seven years, he is survived by three children: Thomas Nathaniel Howard and his wife Kim of Pawley Island, South Carolina; Andrew Shawn Howard and his wife Gretchen of Chicago, Illinois; and Carey Lynne Howard of Cambridge City, Indiana; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a beloved grandmother, Alta Mae Sylvia. A memorial service was held on August 10, 2012, at Grand Ave. United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Roush of Barbour Street United Methodist Church in Terre Haute, Indiana, officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery, Cambridge City, Indiana.

Rev. August V. Huber, 88, retired associate member of the Indiana Conference passed away on July 15, 2012, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany. He was born July 17, 1923, the son of John and Sarah Plaiss Huber. He served in many communities including the Crawford County Circuit in Leavenworth, Fredericksburg, Orangeville, Little York, Marengo, Lanesville, Freelandville, Stone Bluff, Austin, Evansville, Ragelville, Monrovia and Thorntown. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in New Albany, was a member of the Masonic Lodge 475 in Marengo and was a volunteer at Wedgewood Healthcare for eight years. He is survived by two sons, Vernon Huber, of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky and Rev. Hollis Huber, of Charlestown; a daughter, Bonnie Huber, of New Albany; three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A memorial service was held on July 18, 2012, at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home, Georgetown, with burial in Edwardsville Cemetery.

Rev. Alfred Lee Roy Keller went to be with the Lord on November 29, 2012. Born in Rosedale, Indiana, on Aug. 25, 1914, he was the son of the late John and Elsie Erwin Keller. He graduated from South Bend Central High School, attended Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, and graduated from Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana. He received his Master of Theology degree from the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, Illinois. Rev. Keller spent 60 years in active ministry. After retiring, he and his wife, Grace, moved to Clem-son, South Carolina, where he served as director of adult ministries at Clemson United Methodist Church. Mr. Keller was active in Kiwanis Clubs in both Indiana and South Carolina.

Rev. Keller is survived by two daughters, Ronda Marie Senn (David) of Clemson and Ruth Ann Frey (Paul) of Anderson, South Carolina; five grandchildren, and 21 great-

grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Grace Larson Keller.

A memorial service was held on Dec. 16, 2012, at the Clemson United Methodist Church. Ashes were interred in Memorial Gardens at Oakwood Park, Syracuse, Indiana.

Rev. James William Keith of the Franklin United Methodist Community, retired minister of the United Methodist Church, died March 29, 2013. Dr. Keith was a graduate of Asbury College, Wilmore, Kentucky, held a Master of Divinity from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, and an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Asbury College. Ordained in 1945, Dr. Keith was pastor of United Methodist churches in Indiana including Lanesville Charge, Huntingburg, Bloomington Fairview, Columbus First, and Indianapolis Irvington, as well as superintendent of Evansville and New Albany Districts. After his retirement in 1984, he served as an associate pastor at First and St. Paul United Methodist churches in Largo, Florida and pastor of Jollity United Methodist Church in Indiana. For the past six years, he has been a volunteer tutor at Webb Elementary School in Franklin, where he was a hugely popular "lunch buddy." Dr. Keith was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Gladys M. Keith, in 2012.

Keith, James

He is survived by his son, the Reverend J. William Keith, Jr., of Westfield, Indiana, his daughter Carolyn Keith Burr (David G. Lewis) of North Caldwell, New Jersey, and two grandchildren. A memorial service was held April 2, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church, Franklin, Indiana.

Rev. Dr. Donald LaSuer, 89, passed away August 26, 2012, at Heritage Pointe in Warren. He was born in Sioux City, Iowa. Dr. LaSuer was Superintendent of the Calumet and South Bend Districts. He received his Honorary Doctorate from DePauw University and was widely recognized for his wisdom and mentoring of younger pastors. Donald loved his family and wife of more than 60 years, Mary Imogene. He was a “lion” of a man and loved the church and life itself.

John Roland Mangum, Jr., of Royal Center, Indiana, 52, denomination pastor of Fulton and Fulton Co. Pleasant Hill at Lake Bruce United Methodist churches in the Northwest District, died Jan. 8, 2013. He was born in Whittier, California, to John and Mary June Mangum, Sr. February 1992, he married Michelle Smith in Riverside, California. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and member and chaplain of Royal Center Masonic Lodge #585. Pastor John was a dynamic preacher who boldly shared his testimony of his faith in Jesus. He had a gift for setting people at ease in conversation and used this tool readily to witness to people at every opportunity. He shared a compelling testimony that was as irresistible as his smile and contagious laugh. He was able to be "all things to all men" in order to win souls for Christ (1 Corinthians 9:22). He was a dedicated pastor and loving husband and father, but would most want to be known as a devoted follower of Jesus.

Mangum, John

Rev. Mary E. McGawn, 57, retired Deacon of the Indiana Conference, died May 18, 2012 at Parkview LaGrange Hospital. She was born on March 13, 1955, in South Bend, Indiana, to Donald R. and Wanda M. (Potter) McGawn. They both preceded her in death. Growing up in New Carlisle, Indiana, she moved from there to LaGrange County in 1979 to work for Lakeland Middle School. She was a graduate of Indiana University South Bend where she obtained both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education. She was a special education and social studies teacher at Lakeland Middle School from August 1979 until her retirement in June 2010. John W. McFarland, age 89, of Greencastle, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2013, at Asbury Towers. Born August 16, 1923 in Elkton, Tennessee, he was the son of Henry and Addie (Gowan) McFarland. He was an Army Aircorp veteran having served in WWII and was a Technical Sergeant serving on the Gold Coast of Africa. John attended Martin College in Pulaski, Tennessee, where he met his wife, Nancy (Elliott) McFarland, sharing 65 years together; she preceded him in death on May 31, 2012. John furthered his education receiving his Bachelor's Degree from DePauw University, his PhD from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, and his post-doctoral study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was employed as a research Chemist with DuPont Chemical for six years in Wilmington, Delaware, prior to coming to DePauw University, where he taught in the Chemistry Department for 33 years retiring Emeritus in 1994. During his career at DePauw, he

also served as assistant dean of students, chemistry department head, and pre-medical/pre-dental advisor. John had also served as pastor in the Methodist churches in Carbon, Fillmore, Canaan and Bainbridge. John was a member of the Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity, Kiwanis, and a member for over 50 years of the American Chemical Society. McFarland, John

Rev. Emerald Joe Miller, 79, of Shipshewana, died Monday January 21, 2013 at IU Goshen Hospital. Emerald came to the area from Fort Wayne in 1937. He was the Pastor at Lakeview United Methodist Church in rural LaGrange from 1988-2012. Emerald also was a farmer and owner of Miller's Berry Patch. He was also a bus driver for Westview School Corp. from 1984-2008. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving his country in the Korean War. He was born September 12, 1933 in Allen County to Emerald A. and Edna R. (Voirol) Miller. On April 12, 1958 he married Elvira M. Clifton in Owenton, Kentucky. She preceded him in death on December 17, 2012. Surviving him are two daughters and a son-in-law, Teresa Dershem of Nappanee, Indiana, and Gloria and Bruce Miller of Shipshewana, Indiana, and seven grandchildren. Preceding Emerald in death are his parents and his wife.

Rev. Harold T. North, age 78, of Rome City, died on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at Brooksville Regional Hospital, Brooksville, Florida. Rev. North was born in LaGrange County, Indiana on January 5, 1935, to the late Dale Thomas North and Gladys Una (Reed) North. He graduated from Wolcottville High School in 1953, married Lois Jean Fraker on August 6, 1954, in Argos, Indiana, and graduated from Marion College, now Indiana Wesleyan University in 1957. He continued his education in ministry studies at Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. He then went on to Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California, and received a Masters of Social Science in 1970. He furthered his studies at Elkhart Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary from where he obtained a Master’s of Divinity in 1988. He completed his ministerial studies at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne and received a Doctorate of Ministry in July 1997. Rev. North was a pastor-

teacher for more than 40 years. He began his pastoral ministry in 1959 in Indianapolis. Harold served eight years on the East Noble School Board and was a member of the Rome City Lions Club.

Charles Albert Nunery passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2013, at the age of 93. Rev. Nunery graduated from Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary before serving as pastor at multiple congregations in the Kentucky Conference for the United Methodist Church from 1942-1967. He then served as pastor in the Northern Indiana Conference for the United Methodist Church from 1967 until 1983 when he retired as lead pastor to serve as Minister for Visitation and Deaf Ministries at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. He was active in the Greater Indianapolis Emmaus Community, serving as Spiritual Director for numerous Emmaus walks.

Nunery, Charles

He traveled extensively around world leading numerous tour groups with his wife of 66 years, Grace Eileen Nunery. He studied to be a concert pianist before answering God’s call to the ministry. He was an avid gardener, devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his wife Grace Nunery. He is survived by his four children, Ruth (Mike) Allford, David (Debbie) Nunery, William (Mathieu) Nunery, and Dorothy (Timothy) Juergensen, as well as18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on January 12, 2013, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. Private burial services were held on January 13, 2013 at Crown Hill Cemetery.

The Rev. Dr. Henry N. Oakes Jr. of Wilmington died July 28, 2012, following a brief illness. He was 76. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Phyllis. He is also survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Oakes-Harmon, Loveland, Ohio, and Holly Brooks, Tarboro, North Carolina; and four grandchildren. He was a graduate of Indiana University and had a Master's Degree in Sacred Theology from Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey and a Ph.D. in American Church History from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. Rev. Oakes and Phyllis moved to Wilmington in 2002. He served several years as associate pastor at Hampstead United Methodist Church and as spiritual director for the Walk to Emmaus spiritual retreats. He also taught classes at Wrightsville United Methodist Church. He served on the board of directors of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNCW and taught several sessions on American History.

Rev. Oakes was active in U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 10-06, where he was program officer, chaplain and instructor in boating safety. In 2010, he was named Flotilla's "Auxiliarist of the Year." He was a member of the Cape Fear River Watch, Wilmington-Cape Fear Rotary Club and was a Master Gardener. He was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the honorary designation of Kentucky Colonel in 2001, the highest award given by the state of Kentucky for community service. Besides being a pastor at various churches in Indiana, he also taught classes at Cornell College, Iowa; Indiana-Purdue University, Indianapolis; DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana; and Franklin College, Franklin, Indiana. He also served as chaplain at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky and Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia. He retired in 1997 as pastor of Olive Hill and Fairview United Methodist churches in eastern Kentucky. A memorial service was held on August 1, 2012, at Wrightsville United Methodist Church. Burial was in Silver Creek Cemetery, Charlestown, Indiana.

Oakes, Henry

Rev. William S. "Bill" Offutt peacefully passed away November 2, 2012, at the Franklin United Methodist Community with his daughter, Judie Lahr at his side. Bill was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and a former resident of Columbus and Vincennes. He was born March 13, 1915, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Herbert C. Offutt and Josephine (Stanley) Offutt. Bill was 1934 graduate of Vincennes Lincoln High. He went on to Vincennes University (class of 1936) and Purdue University (class of 1938). There he studied engineering and was a member of Theta Chi. He married Alberta Lou (Day) Offutt on November 26, 1938 , who preceded him in death September 29, 2011, after 72+ loving years. Their devotion and dedication to each other and their faith were evident to all those who knew them. We are sure they are reunited now.

Bill served with the Cavalry Mule Pack Outfit during WWII. He also learned photography. After WWII, he returned to Vincennes where he was owner/operator of "Photos by Offutt" for several years. Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. He served the Southern Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church for 22 years, retiring to Columbus, Indiana. He was very active in Asbury Methodist Church in Columbus. From 1995, he was an active and involved resident of First United Methodist Church. He was the past president of the Men's Club and the past Aquatic's Exercise Instructor. Bill enjoyed sailing (as a young man), fishing, swimming and playing pool. He was a great family man! He enjoyed others of all ages and walks of life. Bill will be missed by his daughter, Judie Lahr of Columbus, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, David S. Offutt Rev. David Lee conducted a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, in the Wright Chapel of the Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin, Indiana. Military Rites were presented by the Franklin Honor Guard.

Rev. Lyle Rasmussen of Washington, Indiana, 86, a retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013. He was the father of the Revs. Timothy A. Rasmussen, pastor of Whitestown United Methodist Church; Stephen L. Rasmussen, pastor of Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Indianapolis; and Daniel D. Rasmussen, pastor of Center United Methodist Church in Indianapolis; all members of the Indiana Conference. Lyle was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on May 7, 1926 to the late Wilbur and Gladys (Hubbard) Rasmussen. He graduated from Oshkosh High School in June 1944 after attending one semester at Taylor University, Upland, Indiana. Lyle married Jean Rasmussen (Smith), June 8, 1947 at the Capitol Avenue Methodist Church. Jean went to be with her Lord on October 22, 1994. Lyle graduated from Taylor in 1950 and from Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis 1958. Lyle was ordained a Deacon in 1952 and an Elder in 1958 in the North

Indiana Conference. From 1946 until 1968 he served churches in the North Conference. When the merger took place between Evangelical Brethren and the Methodist Church he was automatically placed in the Southern Indiana Conference where he stayed until his retirement in 1991. While in Southern Indiana he also served as Chaplain for the Fraternal Order of Police District 101. Lyle was a member of the Kiwanis Club and served as president for a year. Lyle enjoyed camping and the outdoors and took part in many programs promoting such for the community’s youth. He was actively involved in the Clyde Dupin Crusades and numerous mission trips and ministries. Survivors include his loving wife of 18 years, Mary Ann; three sons, Rev. Timothy Allen Rasmussen (Serena), Rev. Stephen Lee Rasmussen (Rebecca), Rev. Daniel Dean Rasmussen (Julie); children by marriage, Tom Hughey (Trina) and Lorrie Willimas (Don); 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Lyle was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Rasmussen.

Pastor Jack N. Snell, 80, of Morocco, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 24, 2013. He was born in Clinton County, Indiana, on February 5, 1933, son of the late Sylvester and Fern (Goodwin) Snell. He was a lifelong area resident. Jack graduated from Morocco High School with the class of 1951. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1957 and went on to earn his master's degree from Purdue University in 1960. On August 16, 1952, Jack married his wife of over 60 years, Sarah (Dawson) Snell. Jack was a teacher and counselor in the Newton County Schools for 49 years, retiring in 1998. Jack was a past member of the Lions Club, a Boy Scout Leader, and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He enjoyed model railroads, fishing, camping, traveling and oil painting. He especially enjoyed painting pictures of covered bridges. Jack is survived by his loving family: wife, Sarah Snell; daughter, Cecilia (Larry)

Henning of Flora; two sons, Stephen Snell and William Snell, both of Morocco; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a nephew. Snell, Jack

Rev. Edward C. Susat, 97, of Evansville, died Friday October 12, 2012, at Deaconess Hospice Care Center. He was born August 1, 1915 in, Batavia, New York, to the late Charles and Ada Susat. Edward graduated from Batavia High School, Buffalo State Teachers College, and Ohio State University. He taught three years in Puerto Rico, worked 12 years for Purdue University and worked 25 years for University of Evansville. He served as chairman of Tri State Regional Science Fair for many years, was active in Phi Delta Kappa and TKE Fraternity and was editor of the Journal of Cooperative Education for three years. Edward was a retired Local Pastor and was a member of Old North United Methodist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and numerous committees. He served two

He enjoyed singing, participating in glee clubs and choirs, and was in Savoyards Chorus in the Gilbert & Sullivan Productions. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy in 1996. Edward is survived by wife of 12 years, Mary Anna Lee Susat; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on October 15, 2012, at Old North United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Mike Monahan and Major David Minks, with entombment at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Rev. James W. Swan, 86, Marion, died Wednesday, February 27, 2013, in Wesleyan Healthcare. He was born in Bicknell, Indiana, to the late David and Leola Swan and lived most of his life in Marion. James attended Frankfort Pilgrim College, Manchester College and Christian Theological Seminary. He married Vernal Marcella Swan on August 1, 1947, who survives. He retired in 2005 from the United Methodist Church after 44 years in the ministry. James was a United States Navy World War II veteran, serving as a signalman. James is survived by his wife, Marcella Swan, Marion, Indiana; children, Jim (Cindy) Swan, Marion, Indiana, David (Kambi) Swan, Statesville, North Carolina, Carolyn (Michael) Swan-Mere, Marion, Indiana and Donna (Daniel) Siders, Wabash, Indiana; 15 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Leola Swan, four sisters, four brothers and one grandson.

A memorial service was held on March 5, 2013 at Hanfield United Methodist Church in Marion, Indiana, with Pastor Rick Swan and Pastor Larry Swan officiating. Entombment was at Gardens of Memory, Marion.

Swan, James

Dr. John G. Swank, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference and professor emeritus at the University of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2013 at age 95. John was born in Gary, Indiana and proudly served his country in the US Navy during WW II. Although he held many jobs throughout his life, none made him more proud than being an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church and teaching in the Communication Department at the University of Indianapolis (1964-1982). He was a long-time member of University Heights United Methodist church and taught Sunday school there for over 30 years. Students of all ages enjoyed his teaching. John earned his bachelor's degree from Otterbein University; master's degrees from United Theological Seminary and the University of Michigan and at the age of 76 completed his doctorate in ministry from Trinity Evangelical Seminary. In 1987, he was named an honorary alumnus at the University of Indianapolis, an

honor he was so proud of! He was a 50-year member of the Masons, and also a member of Scottish Rite and Shrine. Having lived in northern Indiana and Michigan for a number of years, John grew to love hunting and fishing. Known to tell an occasional "fish story," he did catch "the big one" while living in Florida during his retirement. John also enjoyed golf, especially during retirement, playing until age 91.

Swank, John

John was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor (2004) and wife, Margaret (1955). He is survived by daughters JoAnn (John) Canniff and Vicky Swank. A Celebration of Life service was held on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at University Heights United Methodist Church, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Rev. Richard (Dick) Calvin Thistle, 88, passed away quietly April 26, 2013, in LaPorte, Indiana. Dick was born April 9, 1925, to Richard and Elsie Thistle in Everett, Massachusetts. He grew up with his brother Everett and his sister Elsie. Immediately upon graduation from high school, in 1943, Dick joined the army and served his country in WWII. He was injured in France and while recovering from an injury that would have him wearing a leg brace for the rest of his life, Dick served as a chaplain's assistant, preparing for seminary and life as a pastor. In 1946 Dick married Muriel Joyce Hudson, the love of his life for the next 67 years. He was ordained and received his elder’s orders in 1949. Dick served the early years of his ministry in Massachusetts, but longed for a mission assignment. Since his war injury made it impossible for him to serve as a missionary overseas, the church asked him to lead a group of believers in Hammond, Indiana, who were starting a new congregation. In 1952, Dick, Muriel and their children moved to Indiana and helped start what would become Woodmar Methodist Church. He also served as a District Superintendent for the United Methodist

Church and finally as the Chaplain at Gary Methodist Hospital. He and Muriel retired to their home on the lake in LaPorte in 1988. Dick's other passion was Shrine and the Shriners Hospital for Children. He was as member of the Orak Temple; was a 33 Degree Mason; served as Chaplain and Potentate of Orak Temple and was Imperial Chaplain. Dick also

The Rev. George P. Weister, 67, passed away at St. Elizabeth East Hospital, Lafayette, on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. George was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania on December 12, 1944. He was the son of the late Clarence Holmes and Alvera (McClintock) Weister. George was raised in Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, graduating from Johnsonburg High School in 1962. He later graduated from the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York, and received his divinity degree from the Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. On May 25, 1968, George married Sandra Fortier in Buffalo, New York. He moved to Indiana in 1974 and retired from the ministry in 1994. George was a dual member of the Converse Lodge 601 and the Pine Village Lodge 315 F. & A.M., serving as Past Master. He was a 33° Scottish Rite Freemason, Valley of Terre Haute, Grand Chaplain of the Royal Arch Masons of Indiana, member of the Murat Shrine and held dues cards for several other appendant bodies. George had served as Representative

for the Indiana Masonic Home Foundation, retiring in 2011 due to his health. George had authored several articles for the "Grand Architect of the Universe" column for the Indiana Freemason magazine, dating back to 2004. George had been given the title of "Kentucky Colonel" by the Kentucky Commonwealth. George was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team and Pittsburgh Steelers football team. George leaves behind his wife of 44 years along with a son, Greg Weister, both of Williamsport. A memorial service was held at the Kokomo Zion United Methodist Church in Kokomo, Indiana, on Saturday, November 17, 2012, with the Revs. Milton Gould and David Herr officiating. Burial followed in the Kokomo Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Jack Martin Williams of Indianapolis, 86, a retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died Saturday, July 28, 2012. He was born in Barkeyville, Pennsylvania on October 20, 1925, to Grace and Carl Martin Williams. After serving as an Army medic in World War II, he attended Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky, and was ordained in the Methodist Church.

Williams, Jack

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lois Evans Williams, his daughter, Deborah Williams, and three grandsons. There was a brief graveside service for family and close friends on August 1, 2012, and a memorial service was held later at Stockwell United Methodist Church, where he served as minister from 1966 to his retirement in 1990.

Rev. Roger G. Wrigley, 86, a resident of the Franklin United Methodist Community and a retired Elder of the Indiana Conference and father of the Rev. Kevin Alden Wrigley, pastor of Bloomfield United Methodist Church, passed away May 7, 2012. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was born in Peoria, Illinois, to Roger and Irma Wrigley. He attended Purdue University and Garrett Evangelical Seminary.

Helen Abts, surviving spouse of Rev. Emerson Abts, passed away on October 7, 2012. She was a resident of Pleasant Hills, Tennessee.

Lois Williamson Aebersold passed away October 18, 2012, at the age of 87. She was born April 26, 1925, in Tokyo, Japan, of missionary parents, Everett and Corinth Williamson. Due to the depression, they had to return to the States in 1930. They moved to a small farm near Amanda, Ohio. She attended the Amanda School System and graduated from high school in 1943. She took her college work at Asbury College and graduated in 1947 with a degree in Christian Education and Psychology. She spent one year in a Methodist Church in East St. Louis as a Christian Education Director. While at Asbury, Lois met Jack Aebersold and they were married in 1948. They served Methodist pastorates in south and north Indiana. They then went to Yale University for Korean language study before going to South Korea as missionaries for the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. They served for 21 years. Lois’s main role as a missionary was to teach missionary children, which she did in Wonju, Korea, and her last term at Korea Christian Academy in Taejon, Korea. She also worked with district minister’s wives. She taught English Bible classes for high school girls and gave piano lessons for kindergarten teachers at Mokwon College. They returned to the States for family reasons and settled in Columbus in 1978. Lois began teaching first grade at a Catholic school where she taught for 17 years. She retired in 1995. In 1998, she and her husband moved to Franklin United Methodist Community. Her husband Jack died in April of 2008.

She is survived by a son, Paul Brian (Melinda) Aebersold of Bothell, Washington, and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack and daughter, Annette Aebersold Keller. A memorial service was held at Wright Chapel of Franklin United Methodist Community on Thursday, October 25, 2012.

Zekie passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 17, 2013, after a short illness. Zekie was born on April 27, 1921, to Harry Douglas Kirby and Lilly Orien Edwards Kirby of Darlington, South Carolina. In 1941, Zekie graduated from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, South Carolina, with an Associate Degree in Business. In 1943, she married Donald F. Hayden and was happily married for 42 years during which she had three children: Sandra L Poirier of Tennessee, Janet O. Mills of North Carolina and Donald F. Hayden, Jr., of Colorado. They were long time residents of Florida (Largo and Crystal River), as well as North Carolina, Washington, Montana and Manila, Philippines. In 1987 Zekie married Rev. R Neil Anderson in Crystal River. They served their faith in Crystal River and later in Jacksonville before retiring. Zekie was a passionate volunteer and for many years assisted in local schools. She was a life-long exercise enthusiast and gifted dancer and at one time

offered ballroom dance classes. She learned card games in her pre-teens and enjoyed bridge throughout her life, participating in competitive tournaments and giving classes often.

Mary Jane, age 85, died February 13, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Rev. Robert F. Barger and devoted mother to children, Kay Clark of Peoria, Illinois, Joni Perry (Dennis) of Springfield, Missouri, Bonny Coy (Dan) of Harrison, Ohio, and the late Ronald Barger (Linda). She was the beloved daughter of the late Jewel 'Jimmy' and Laura (Balser) Durham. She is also survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Joyce Ann Berg of Stockwell, Indiana, 81, mother of the Rev. Mark S. Berg, pastor of Stockwell United Methodist Church in the Northwest District, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013. She also was the widow of the late Rev. Glen Berg, a deceased clergy member of the Indiana Conference, who died in 1987. She was born in Fairfield, Illinois, to James and Perilla Armstrong Guy. Marjorie A. Blake, 81, of Warren, Indiana, passed away on April 12, 2013 at Hospice Home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was born on Friday, September 18, 1931, in Lynn, Indiana. She married Rev. Dr. Floyd Blake on Sunday, June 4, 1950, in Upland, Indiana, in the Upland United Methodist Church. Mrs. Blake was the wife of a United Methodist Pastor, where she served every church as a partner side-by-side with her husband. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school for junior high school students. Mrs. Blake was a 1949 graduate of Ann Arbor High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan and a 1979 graduate of I.U.-Kokomo, where she received her Nursing degree. She retired as an RN from Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie and formerly worked at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. She was a prolific reader; she traveled to all 50 states and parts of Europe. She and her husband Floyd went on many mission trips, serving in South Texas and at the African University in Mutare,

Zimbabwe. She was always a willing hostess for anything related to church activities. Mrs. Blake enjoyed sewing and baking, especially baking cookies. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Carol Marie May Bonham of Indianapolis, 86, widow of the late Rev. Earl T. Bonham, deceased member of the Indiana Conference, and mother-in-law of the Rev. L. Cameron Manifold, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, died Friday, March 1, 2013. Born July 6, 1926 in Princeton, Illinois to Truman W. and Margaret C. May, Carol attended and graduated from the Edwardsville, Illinois, local grade school and high school. She was a graduate of Alton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Alton, Illinois, and was a registered nurse in Illinois and Indiana. She retired from Methodist Hospital of Indiana (IU Health). She also worked at Hendricks Community and Floyd Memorial Hospitals. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood, the Quilters Guild of Indianapolis, a charter member of OASIS (Older Adult Services and Information Systems) and a volunteer at Methodist Hospital Center for Geriatric Medicine. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, the Rev. Earl T. Bonham, a retired United Methodist Pastor, and their son Mark L. Bonham. Carol is survived by four daughters, Carol E. Ruth Gentry Boring, 90, of New Albany, Indiana, died Friday, May 4, 2012, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services with family at her side. She was born March 8, 1922, in Gentryville, Indiana, to George and Maudie Bullock. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Ellen Westerman Brashares died on September 5, 2012. She was born on October 6, 1922, in Ann Arbor, Michigan to W. Scott Westerman and Frieda Wuerfel. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband and her sister Joanne Feely. Ellen graduated magna cum laude from Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio. substitute teacher in the communities where her husband served as pastor, but her priority job was at home as wife, mother, and homemaker and in the church and community as a volunteer. After her children graduated, she had a career in fashion for 9 ½ years at Hudsons. The legacy for which Ellen will always be remembered is based on her credo to serve God fully and make every human encounter one that expresses love, encouragement and affirmation of others. Ellen is survived by five children, nine granddaughters, one grandson and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Edgewood United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, on September 8, 2012.

Vera “Darleen” Campbell, 84, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Heritage House Convalescent Center. Darleen was born May 13, 1928, in Shelby County. She was the daughter of Hayden O. and Lula M. (McNamara) Noe. She married her husband of 63 years, the Rev. Robert M. Campbell on September 23, 1949, and he survives. Other survivors include her son, the Rev. Terry D. (wife, Pam) Campbell of Greenfield; daughter, the Rev. Sandy (husband, the Rev. Gary) Cooper of Seymour; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Darleen graduated from Mount Auburn High School in 1946. She had previously worked at J.C. Penney’s Department Store, Second National Bank and National Farm Machinery. Mrs. Campbell was a member of First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville and was past-president of United Methodist Women. She was a wonderful homemaker and loved spending

time with her family. A memorial service was held on March 11, 2013, at First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, Indiana, with her children, the Revs. Terry D. Campbell and Sandy Cooper officiating. Also officiating will be the Revs. Reid Walker and Gary Cooper. Interment was in Miller Cemetery.

Norma Lee (McDonald) Carmin, 84, widow of the late Rev. Robert Lee Carmin, a deceased clergy member of the Indiana Conference, died Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Hospice House in Cheboygan, Michigan. She was born March 19, 1928, in Washington, to Norman Lee and Grace May (McBride) McDonald and married Robert Lee Carmin October 20, 1948, who she met while in nurses’ training at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Norma and Rev. Carmin served many churches in the North Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cheboygan, an avid reader, quilter, cook, knitter and a huge basketball fan. She also loved the Indy 500 and went to the race 33 times. She volunteered at Hospice of the Straits and the Opera House for nearly 20 years. In retirement, she and Bob loved their home on Lake Huron. They spent the winters snow shoeing, snow tubing, going to the “mushes” (dog sledding), and

enjoying nature in Northern Michigan.

Neoma Irene Colpitts, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January, 15, 2013, at Orchard Creek Assisted Living, Traverse City, Michigan, with her daughter and son-in-law at her side. Born Nov. 3, 1917, in Flint, Michigan, she earned her associates degree from Flint Junior College in 1937 and Bachelor of Arts degree from North Central College 1939. On June, 14, 1941, she married A. Hunter Colpitts. She was a Kindergarten teacher in Flint, Michigan, a teacher of grades first and second in Mouton, Ohio, and a substitute teacher in the Wapakoneta, Ohio Public Schools. She was a former member of Crescent Avenue United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and also served as a second grade Sunday school teacher. She was an associate member of High Street United Methodist Church, Muncie, Indiana, and was actively involved in the aftermath of the High Street Church explosion in 1978. Neoma was a supporting member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse,

Indiana. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter, E.J. As Hunter's loyal partner, Neoma lovingly embraced the many years of duties, responsibilities, joys and pleasures of the role of "the minister's wife." Prior to Neoma's move to Traverse City, she enjoyed many years as a property owner in the wonderful community of Oakwood Park, on Lake Wawasee. Neoma, Hunter, her family and friends made many happy memories there in their beloved little red cedar log cabin that they had built on the water. Later they constructed their second home next to the cottage and lived contently there full-time after their retirement.

Betty Ruth Dixon 80, Coatesville, passed away July 30, 2012. She was born in Decker Chapel, Indiana, to William Paul and Mamie Violet Chattin. In 1953, she married V. Ray Dixon. She is survived by three children: Sherrill Kotter, Kathryn Keller and Victoria Able; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

At age 86, Ruth Ellen Wiggins Edwards of Warren, Indiana, passed away on February 13, 2013, at her residence, Heritage Pointe Home. Born in Dixon, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Frank Davis, Sr., and the late Frances Irene Taylor Wiggins. In 1945, she married Herbert LeRoy Edwards of Lanark, Illinois. After her mother’s death in 1939, Ruth left Dixon High School to care for her four siblings and was supervisor at the Freeman Shoe Company of Dixon making army boots during World War II. At the age of 64, she fulfilled her dream of a high school diploma from Rensselaer Central High School in 1990. With family as her career, Mrs. Edwards worked part time for W. T. Grant store, Title 1 Reading Tutor for Warsaw Community Schools, and Licensed Practical Nurse for Murphy Medical Center, Warsaw, Indiana. Volunteering in her community, Ruth was a Chaplain Assistant at Murphy Medical Center and served as treasurer of the Jasper County Hospital Auxiliary and as a clerk in the hospital gift shop. Herbert and Ruth volunteered for mission work trips to

Laurel Mission, Kentucky, and Stillwell, Oklahoma. While living at Heritage Pointe, Ruth volunteered in the gift shop and with bingo activities.

Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Herbert and four daughters, RoxyAnn (Michael) Casper of Decatur, Indiana, Marsha Edwards of Indianapolis, Theresa (Gary) Wright of Frankton, Indiana, and Denise Edwards of Corvallis, Montana; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on February 16, 2013, at Heritage Pointe Chapel in Warren, Indiana. Burial followed at the Springhill Cemetery of Heritage Pointe.

Susanna Goldsmith Ellis, beloved wife of Howard Woodrow Ellis, loving mother of Pat (Paul) Beebe of Michigan City, Indiana, and Mary Lou Bordwell, and grandmother of Victoria Bordwell and Kristi Cox, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the age of 96. She was born in Evansville, Indiana, to Clarence and Flora Goldsmith. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Evansville College. In August of 1942, she married Howard Ellis. She assisted him in his ministry as a church school teacher and volunteer.

Elvera (Kramer) Martin-Esche, 91, of Noblesville, Indiana, (former resident of Mt. Vernon, Indiana) mother of David Martin, Indiana Conference United Methodist Men president, and surviving spouse of the late Rev. Elmer C. Martin, died Dec. 25, 2012 in Carmel, Indiana. She was born May 2, 1921 to Henry, Jr., and Augusta Dora (Lurker) Kramer. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Posey County. She worked part-time as a secretary in the churches that she and her late husband Elmer C. Martin served in the former Evansville District. While living in Newburgh, she wrote for the Newburgh Register.

She was a life member of the United Methodist Women, member of Friends 'n Such Extension Home Makers Club, where she served as President for two years. She worked as a volunteer counselor at Santa Claus church camp for 20 years. She served her community by collecting for food pantries, Cancer Fund, visited nursing homes, served as Vanderburg County 4-H Fair watcher, teaching Sunday Church School and Vacation Bible School. She loved to sew and make quilts for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. A memorial service was held on Monday, December. 31, 2012, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Evansville, Indiana. Burial followed at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Cemetery. She is survived by son, David E. (Judy) Martin of Noblesville; stepsons, David (Kathy) Esche of Mt. Vernon, and Kenneth Esche of Wadesville; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren .She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Reverend Elmer C. Martin and Edward Esche, son Elmer R. Martin, daughter-in-law, Rebecca (Moll) Martin and granddaughter, Jennifer Martin.

Betty Jo Fields, devoted wife, mother, partner in ministry, crafter, cook, bridge player, camper, teacher, volunteer, music-lover and dedicated friend to many, died July 10, 2012, at the Hospice House of Bloomington Hospital. A long and valiant struggle against esophageal cancer ended a rich life devoted to others. Born in Crawfordsville in 1934, Betty Joan, was raised on the family homesteaded (1831) by her parents, John Hubert and Stella Cord Cowan.

She studied elementary education at Indiana University and met her husband, James Robert (Bob) Fields while working at Battle Ground Church Camp. She married Bob, a United Methodist minister, in 1955, and together they served many churches before retiring to Bloomington in 1993. They had four children, Mark, Scott, Lynette and Kirk. A handmade teddy bear that Jo crafted for Kirk led to a decades-long personal business making stuffed animals from a variety of materials including recycled furs and antique quilts. She and Bob

traveled on mission trips, including Red Bird Mission and Henderson Settlement in Kentucky. She was also active in Tri Kappa sorority for much of her life Jo is survived by her husband, Bob, of 57 years, four children, and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held on August 4, 2012, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Indiana. Her ashes were scattered privately.

Irene Garner, 90, of Frankfort, died on September 5, 2012, at Wesley Manor. She was born December 1, 1921, in Clinton County, the daughter of Ray and Elsa Clauser Smith. On April 18, 1971, she married Rev. Paul Garner in Lafayette; he preceded her in death on January 25, 2007. Irene was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed music. She worked as a dental assistant in Lafayette, Rossville and Delphi. Surviving Irene are her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Beverly Daniels of Englewood, Florida; two step-daughters, Joyce Fritz and Patricia Taylor, both of Mishawaka; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Herschel Smith. A memorial service was held on September 10, 2012, at Wesley Manor Chapel. Pastor

E. Marie Giles, 97, went to be with the Lord on May 28, 2012, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. She was born on May 6, 1915, in Frankfort, the daughter of Samuel Robert and Blanche (Sheets) Paris, graduated from Michigantown High School, received her Bachelor’s Degree in English from Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan, and moved to Muncie in 1968. She was a school teacher for ten years in Adrian, Michigan, a librarian at Ball State University from 1970 to 1980, and was involved in The United Methodist Church for sixty-five years as a minister’s wife. She was a member of College Avenue United Methodist Church, Faith and Works, United Methodist Women’s Society, Lamplighters Sunday School Class, and Adrian College Alumni Association. She was also active with the Annual United Methodist Conference, and volunteered at the Muncie Mission, Second Harvest Food Bank, and with the Red Cross during WWII. Surviving are her son, George S. Giles of Muncie; her daughter, Garnie S. (Giles) Truax (husband, William) of Aurora, Colorado; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Rev. A. Dale Giles.

Donald Lee “Rocky” Ginder, age 76, of Fort Wayne, died on Thursday, November 22, 2012, at his home. Mr. Ginder was born in Butler, Indiana, on February 21, 1936 to the late Earl and Gwendoleen (Spiers) Ginder. He graduated from Eastside High School in 1954 and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He was first married to Sara Pearl (Reidenbach) Ginder. She preceded him in death on February 27, 1980. He later married Brenda Ann Brock on February 12, 1984, at the Indian Village United Methodist Church near Cromwell. Don was a painting contractor and owned Tri-State Decorating of Fort Wayne for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Forest Park United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne where he served on various committees, as well as worked with the church food pantry and traveled on many mission trips. Don was a generous and talented man, always willing to help someone in need.

Virginia Hershberger, 65, spouse of deceased Elder G. Ben Hershberger, of Weeki Wachee, Florida, died on Jan. 26, 2013. She is survived by daughter, Kimberly (Michael) Medico and three grandsons.

Bernice G. Kennell, age 96, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away April 12, 2013. She was born on April 23, 1916, in Topeka, Kansas, to Anthony and Emma Johnsmeyer Linge. She married Rev. Woodrow W. “Tom” Kennell on June 1, 1939. He preceded her in death. They met at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. Together they faithfully served congregations of the Evangelical United Brethren and United Methodist Churches. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis.

She is survived by her daughters, Ruth Ann (Richard) Gantz and Susan J. Kennell; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents. A private graveside service was held.

Mildred Kessinger, 90, widow of Rev Robert Kessinger, passed away on July 16, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Born January 26, 1922, in Illinois, she was the daughter of L.T. and Inez Bates Elliott. She married Rev. Robert Kessinger in September of 1942, and he preceded her in death October 3, 1998. She was a homemaker and a Methodist minister's wife. She was a member of Horizons of Faith United Methodist Church and had attended the Oolitic United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters, Joy White and Ruth Ann King. A memorial service was held on July 20, 2012, at Day & Carter Mortuary,

Vivian Laffin, 94, wife of the Rev. Dillon Laffin, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died May 16, 2012. A memorial service was held May 1, 2012, at Clear Lake United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. Survivors include: husband, the Rev. Dillon Laffin; daughters, Marcia Lemon and Deborah Lounsbury; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dorothy Mae McCord age 93 of Shallotte went to be with her Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday March 12, 2013, at her home in Shallotte, North Carolina. Mrs. McCord was born

in Ada, Minnesota and was the daughter of the late Glen C. and Mary Opal Grimes Herschburger. She was the wife of the late Rev. Herschel LeRoy McCord, retired Methodist minister and was also preceded in death by a son, Lee McCord. Elvira M. Miller, 74, of Shipshewana, Indiana, died at her home on December 17, 2012. She was born on May 8, 1938, in Henry County, Kentucky, to Sollie, Sr., and Edith (Popp) Clifton. They preceded her in death. On April 12, 1958, in Owenton, Kentucky, she married Emerald Joe Miller. Mr. Miller survives in Shipshewana, Indiana. In 1964, she moved from Cincinnati, Ohio, to LaGrange County. She retired from Classic Manufacturing in Sturgis, Michigan, where she had worked as a controller from 1997-2003. Mrs. Miller was a member of the Lakeview United Methodist Church in rural LaGrange, Indiana. Also surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Teresa Dershem of Nappanee, Indiana, and Gloria and Bruce Miller of Shipshewana, Indiana, and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on December 24, 2012, at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange with Brother Jimmy Gray officiating. Burial followed in Sidener Cemetery in rural Shipshewana, Indiana.

Rosemary Morin would have reached her 90th birthday on July 11. Instead, she passed away at the Hospice Unit, University Place in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Sunday, June 3, 2012. She was born on July 11, 1922, in Clinton and lived her childhood mostly in Terre Haute. She was born to Fred and Mary Cowan of Terre Haute. She attended public schools in Terre Haute, graduating from State High School in Terre Haute in 1941.

Morin, Rosemary

She became a telephone operator for the Bell company in 1941 and continued in that job until 1946 when she gave birth to her firstborn. Rosemary had married James Morin on June 25, 1941, just a week before he was drafted to go into military service during World War II. They had decided that it would give both of them strength to be married while separated by the war. Rosemary was gregarious and loved to be with family and friends. Her family thanks heaven for knowing and loving her so long. Rosemary is survived by her husband; her two daughters, Jane Lewis (husband Dirk) and

Becky Alkire; two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters. A memorial service was held June 7, 2012, at University Place, West Lafayette, Indiana.

Agatha D. Powell, 87, of Fox Ridge Manor, Vincennes, passed away November 24, 2012, at her residence. She was born on March 18, 1925, in Vigo County, to Harry and Beulah (Trotske) Smith. Agatha retired from teaching and also had served as Director of Head Start in Anderson for many years. She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church where she was organist for many years. Agatha belonged to the United Methodist Women’s Club, Tri Kappa and enjoyed quilting and music.

Surviving are her children, Steve (Jan) Powell of Austin, Texas, Janet Powell of California, and Chuck (Audrey) Powell of Farmersburg, along with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James C. Powell. A memorial service was held November 27, 2012 at Goodwin Funeral Home with Rev. Cheryl Garbee and Rev. Ray Tromley officiating. Burial followed in the May Chapel Cemetery.

Rose Margaret Sievers, 95, died Feb. 18, 2013, at Hubbard Hill Retirement Community. She was born Nov. 11, 1917, in Pence to Robert R. and Sarah Olive (Torpey) Leak. She married Robert W. Sievers on June 10, 1951, in Ambia. He died in August 2009. Rose was a graduate of Ambia High School and received her B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa and her M.A. from Northwestern University. She was as member of United Methodist Church and Sigma Alpha Iota International music fraternity. Rose retired in 1972 after many years as a music teacher, pianist, organist, choir director and soloist. She contributed to the music programs of northwestern Indiana United Methodist churches, where her husband ministered in Zionsville, Whiting and Fort Wayne. She is survived by two sons, Carroll R. (Jeannette) of Nampa, Idaho, and Rolla B. (Vickie) Sievers of Goshen, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Rose chose to have her body donated to the Anatomical Education Program of the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology.

Edward John Skiba was born on August 3, 1956, in Reading, Pennsylvania, as one of seven children. By age 10, he was helping to run his father’s A& W Restaurant in which he applied the same work ethic he used throughout his entire life. He graduated from Exeter High School in Reiffton, Pennsylvania. Ed married Ann Texter on April 29, 1978. He began working for MG Industries in 1981, which was bought out by Air Liquide of France and continued working as a plant manager and then as an instrumentation technician until the day of a massive heart attack on July 16,2012. He was working in Ashland Kentucky at the time of the heart attack and then taken to Ashland Hospice, where he passed away on August 7, 2012.

Skiba, Edward

A memorial service and Celebration of Life were held at Gentryville United Methodist Church officiated by Pastor Charlotte Lee, and also a visitation and commemoration at Gouglersville United Church of Christ, Pennsylvania. Ed and Ann lived in Indiana twice,

moving from Pennsylvania once in 1989 to 1994 and then in 2005 to the present. Ed loved golf, NASCAR races and working on clocks. He belonged to the Watch and Clock Makers Association, Masonic Lodge 660 and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 251. He lived his faith and touched the lives of many people; he loved working on Gentryville Church and was a great inspiration and source of support for Ann as they shared in the ministry.

Clare Ester (Jacobs) Stone, of the Franklin United Methodist Community went home to be with the Lord on November 11, 2012. She was born in Decatur, Illinois, on November 1, 1922 to J. Willard Jacobs and Esther Lancaster Jacobs, both preceding her in death. Educated as a teacher at Indiana Central College, Mrs. Stone was an accomplished pianist, organist, music director with an excellent ear for music. Mrs. Stone married Philip Stone in 1942 who served as a pastor in the South Indiana Conference of the EUB and currently United Methodist Church. She counted it an honor to be a ministry partner in her husband's pastorates for over 40 years serving with music and a wide variety of other ministries. She was also known by family and friends as a prayer warrior. Rev. Stone preceded her in death in April of 2003. She is survived by her three children, Dr. Dennis (Mary Sue) Stone of Columbus, Indiana, Mrs. Donna (Marlowe) Mullen of Greenwood Indiana, and John (Peggy) Stone of Overland Park, Kansas; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Her children,

grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all enjoyed playing games with grandma and Grandma Clare.

Stone, Clare

Clare's favorite scripture that she felt best described their ministry is Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” Clare believed you should put God first, others second and self third. Clare was quick to become friends and share the love of Christ. She was proud of her family, and believed in order to have friends you had to be a friend. Mrs. Stone made many, many dear lifelong friends in the churches they served, as well as at the Franklin Community, both residents and staff alike. A memorial service was held on November 24, 2012, at the Wright Chapel of the Franklin United Methodist Community. A private entombment service was held at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, Indiana.

Mary Ellen Summitt-Adams, 82 of Princeton, Indiana, passed away on July 7, 2012, at her residence. Mary was born on September 12, 1929, in Vincennes the daughter of Raymond and Edith (Norrington) O’Dell. She married Rev. Homer Summitt, Jr., on August 10, 1947, and he preceded her in death on June 26, 1998. She then married Gene Adams on October 5, 2004, and he preceded her in death on January 4, 2007.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Indiana. She loved the Lord and loved to read, especially the Bible. Her hobbies were her children and grandchildren and she dedicated her life to them. Mary always looked to give. She was a very beautiful singer and loved to sing in church every Sunday. Survivors include daughter, Zella Summitt-Wiseman and her husband, Phillip of Oakland City, Indiana; daughter, Brenda Rish of Princeton, Indiana; son, David Summitt and his wife Nancy of Seminole, Florida; daughter, Star Dunn and her husband, Dave of Wheatland, Indiana; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one son, Kenneth Ray Vorhese Summitt and one grandson. A memorial service was held on July 12, 2012, at Goodwin Funeral Home in Vincennes with Pastor John Moreland officiating. Burial followed in Edwardsport Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Mary Elizabeth McKinney Wardrip, 89, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at IU Health Bloomington Hospice House. Born September 29, 1923, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Paul R. and Nellie (Ryker) LaShorne, Sr. She married Dr. Clair C. McKinney December 1, 1945, and he preceded her in death June 6, 1971. She and Rev. Howard Wardrip were married July 6, 1985, and he preceded her in death May 14, 2001. Mary graduated from Howe High School and founded Mitchell Optical in 1950. She had previously taught Sunday School at Old Union United Methodist Church.

Survivors include daughters, Donna (David) LaRocca of Mitchell, Cheryl (Alan) Wood of Mitchell, five grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Her parents and husbands preceded her in death. A memorial service was held on March 13, 2013, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Rev. Pat Sinnott officiating. Burial followed in Mitchell Cemetery.

Naomi E. Winter, 96, of Goshen, Indiana, died Jan. 29, 2013, at Greencroft Healthcare in Goshen. She was born May 18, 1916, in New Carlisle, Ohio, to Elmer D. and Ruth H. (Lutz) Mast. She married Chester B. Winter, June 27, 1940, in Elkhart, Indiana. He preceded her in death in 1985. A lifelong educator, she graduated from North Central College, Naperville, Illinois, and received her master’s degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. She taught English at Northwest, John Marshall and Crispus Attucks High Schools, before retiring in 1981 as head of the English Department for the Indianapolis Public Schools.

She is survived by her children, Jane (John) Modesitt of Syracuse, Indiana, and James (Sandra) Winter of Monticello, Indiana; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on February 2 at Shirley Brothers Funeral Home, Indianapolis, Rev. David Herr of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, officiated.

Entombment followed at Washington Park East, Indianapolis.

Marcie A. Young, 72, Mooresville, died peacefully on December 12, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Marcie was born February 2, 1940, in Noblesville, to the late Lawrence and Mary (Conley) Darrah. She graduated from Noblesville High School in 1958 and later from the Harry G. Wood Technical College, where she studied to be a dental assistant. Marcie worked as a dental assistant and also as a Tupperware manager and dealer for eleven years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was active with the Walk to Emmaus. Marcie was also a former board member of the Lucille Raines Residence, member of the Bayview Club and the Mooresville Cancer Support Group. An avid Rageddy Ann and Andy enthusiast, Marcie enjoyed amassing a very impressive collection through the years. Survivors include her husband, Rev. Gene Young, to whom she was united in marriage June 12, 1960; children, Chief Master Sergeant Scott Young, USAF Retired and his wife

Debbie of Louisiana, Vicki Young McGavran and her husband Don of Salatiga, Indonesia, and Troy Young and his wife Theresa of Avon; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service was held December 18, 2012, in the First United Methodist Church in Mooresville. A private burial followed in Crownland Cemetery, Noblesville.
