“I Hope So”

If that is your answer, then you need to take

the following test. Give yourself 1 point for

each statement that fits you. Good Luck!

• I am a good person

• I go to church• I take communion

• I’ve been baptized

• I read my Bible daily

• I don’t smoke, cuss or drink

• I live a good life

• I do a lot of charity work for my church

and my community

• I give my tithes

• I do the best I can

• I pray often

Now, add up your score and flip to the next

page to see your test results.

TR164Am I Going to Heaven When I Die?

This tract is given to you

with the compliments of:

Jesus Paid It All . . . in Full

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only

begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should

not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

It is His blood that was shed for your sins. He paid

your debt—one that He did not owe. Will you ask Him

to forgive you and right now trust Him to save you?

Will you say yes? Pray and ask Him to forgive you and

place your trust in Him.

The next time someone asks you if you are going to

Heaven when you die, you will no longer have to say,

“I Hope So.” If you will trust in Jesus right now, you

can say, “I Know So!”

—Jackie Battles

What Your Score Means

If you scored between 1-10 and you are

content to rely on your score to gain entry

into Heaven, you have come short of your

goal! None of these things are necessary

in order to go to Heaven. You may ask,

“Shouldn’t a person go to church and

read the Bible and pray?” Well, of course.

Everyone should do these things, but going

to church or taking communion or giving money is not

the key that unlocks the door of Heaven.

“If none of these things will get me to Heaven, then

what will?”

Someone may have told you these things were all

necessary, but examine what God actually said. After

all, what people tell you does not matter, but what God

says is what is important. Jesus said, “I am the way, the

truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but

by me” (John 14:6.) This statement is either true or not.

“But Jesus is not the only way, is He?”

When Peter was preaching about Jesus in the book of

Acts, He said, “Neither is there salvation in any other:

for there is none other name under heaven given among

men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). To be

saved means to be born again, redeemed, to become a

child of God.

HOW TO BE SURE YOU WILL GO TO HEAVEN WHEN YOU DIE

A score between 1-10

does not ensure you

a placein Heaven.

“But I am a good person.”

“They are all gone out of the way, they are together

become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no,

not one” (Romans 3:12).

So you may think you are good, but you are a sinner

and when you offer something up to God in order for

Him to save you, He cannot accept your gift because it

is polluted. As a sinner, anything you try to give to God

is unacceptable. “But we are all as an unclean thing,

and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” (Isaiah

64:6).

“How do I become acceptable?”

The truth is there is nothing you can

do except to take what He has given to

make you clean. Someone has to pay

for the sins you have committed.

“For the wages of sin is death”

(Romans 6:23). You cannot pay for your sins because,

as a sinner, you have nothing to offer.

“So who can pay for my sins?”

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no

sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in

him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

This means that God sent His Son, Jesus Christ,

someone who was sinless and owed no debt, to pay a

debt for others (sinners). This is what the Bible calls

grace.

Weighed andfound wanting.

So what should I do now?

So far, you know that:

• You are a sinner.

• The wages of these sins is death.

• The only acceptable payment of sins is

Jesus Christ, the only perfect sacrifice.

God says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth

the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God

hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For

with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and

with the mouth confession is made unto salvation”

(Romans 10:9, 10).

If you will tell God that you are a sinner (confess),

ask God to forgive you of these sins (repent) and believe

with all of your heart that Jesus is the Son of God and

paid your sin debt, God will forgive you.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just

to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all

unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

important message.

that all mankind are sinners (Gen. 1:26; Gen. 3:6-24; Rom. 5:12, 19). 11. We believe that the suffering and death of Jesus Christ was substitutionary for all mankind and is efficacious only to those who believe (Isa. 53:6; Heb. 2:9; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 Peter 3:18; 2 Peter 3:9; 1 John 2:2). 12. We believe in the bodily resurrection and ascension of Christ and the bodily resurrection of His saints (Matt. 28:1-7; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Cor. 15:42-58; 1 Thess. 4:13-18). 13. We believe in the premillennial, personal, bodily return of Christ as the crowning event of the Gentile age. This event will include the resurrection of the righteous to eternal heaven, and the Millennium will be followed by the resurrection of the unrighteous unto eternal punishment in the lake of fire and that the righteous shall enter into the heaven age (John 14:1-6; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; 2 Thess. 2:8; Rev. 19; Rev. 20:4-6; Rev. 20:11-15; Rev. 21:8). 14. We believe that the depraved sinner is saved wholly by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and the requisites to regeneration are repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 13:3-5; John 3:16-18; Acts 20:21; Rom. 6:23; Eph. 2:8, 9), and that the Holy Spirit convicts sinners, regenerates, seals, secures, and indwells every believer (John 3:6; John 16:8, 9; Rom. 8:9-11; 1 Cor. 6:19, 20; Eph. 4:30; Titus 3:5). 15. We believe that all who trust Jesus Christ for salvation are eternally secure in Him and shall not perish

(John 3:36; John 5:24; John 10:27-30; Rom. 8:35-39; Heb. 10:39; 1 Peter 1:5). 16. We believe that God deals with believers as His children, that He chastises the disobedient, and that He rewards the obedient (Matt. 16:27; Matt. 25:14-23; John 1:12; Heb. 12:5-11; 2 John 8; Rev. 22:12). 17. We believe that Jesus Christ established His church during His ministry on earth and that it is always a local, visible assembly of scripturally baptized believers in covenant relationship to carry out the Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ, and each church is an independent, self-governing body, and no other ecclesiastical body may exercise authority over it. We believe that Jesus Christ gave the Great Commission to the New Testa ment churches only, and that He promised the perpetuity of His churches (Matt. 4:18-22; Matt. 16:18; Matt. 28:19, 20; Mark 1:14-20; John 1:35-51; Eph. 3:21). 18. We believe that there are two pictorial ordinances in the Lord’s churches: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Scriptural baptism is the immersion of penitent believers in water, administered by the authority of a New Testament church in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Lord’s Supper is a memorial ordinance, restricted to the members of the church observing the ordinance (Matt. 28:19, 20; Acts 8:12, 38; Rom. 6:4; 1 Cor. 5:11-13; 1 Cor. 11:1, 2, 17-20, 26). 19. We believe that there are two divinely appointed offices in a church, pastors and deacons, to be filled by

men whose qualifications are set forth in Titus and 1 Timothy. 20. We believe that all associations, fellowships, and committees are, and properly should be, servants of, and under control of the churches (Matt. 20:25-28). 21. We believe in freedom of worship without interference from the government and affirm our belief in civil obedience, unless the laws and regulations of civil government run contrary to the Holy Scriptures (Rom. 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13-15). 22. We believe the Bible definition of marriage is the union between a man and a woman (Gen. 2:21-24; Matt. 19:4-6; Mark 10:6-9; 1 Cor. 7:2-4; Eph. 5:22-31).

There are many different kinds of Baptists. We are Missionary Baptists and believe in every phase of Mission work as outlined by the Scriptures and practiced by the churches down through the centuries since the days of Jesus Christ and the apostles. We are also orthodox Baptists. We hold to the doctrines as taught by Jesus Christ and the apostles and contained in the New Testament. Any doctrine or practice contrary to the teachings of Christ and His apostles is heterodoxy, and heterodoxy is heresy. Orthodoxy, when applied to Baptists, means they are scriptural. Baptist doctrines and principles were established by Jesus Christ and His apostles. Yet the established and accepted doctrines of denominations were established by some man or men this side of the New Testament, and many of them in very recent years. We are fundamental Baptists. A fundamental Baptist is one who adheres to the faith as set forth by Jesus and His apostles and takes the Bible as his only rule of faith and practice. A true fundamental Baptist takes the whole Bible, plus nothing and minus nothing. Any Baptist who claims to be fundamental and fails in this particular is not a real fundamental Baptist but is a heretic. The word “fundamental” means it pertains to the foundation or base. We accept the Bible as the foundation of our belief and accept Jesus Christ as the foundation or base of His church. He is the only lawgiver to His church. We are premillennial Baptists. A premillennial Baptist believes that Christ will come and awaken His children

from the dead, change the living saints and call them up to meet Him in the air before the Millennium. After the Tribulation Period, Christ will come to earth and establish His millennial kingdom and reign a thousand years over all the earth. We are militant Baptists. A militant Baptist is one who is fighting the good fight of faith. He is a warrior, warring a good warfare for Christ. He is a soldier who is enduring hardness for Christ. A Baptist who is not militant is a poor specimen of a New Testament Baptist. A missionary, orthodox, fundamental, pre millennial, militant Baptist is a Baptist who believes in a supernatural Bible which tells of a supernatural Christ, who spake supernatural words, who performed supernatural miracles, who died a supernatural death, who rose in supernatural glory, who lives and intercedes as supernatural Priest, who is soon coming in supernatural victory, to establish a supernatural kingdom and reign for one thousand years on the earth. We are not Baptists only because Baptists believe the doctrines as set forth in this tract. We find that others believe some of them as well as we do. We are Baptists because of the eight peculiar doctrines held by us, which are held by no other people besides Baptists. These eight peculiarities are as follows:

1. We believe in the Bible as an all-sufficient rule of faith and practice.

2. We believe the church of Jesus Christ was founded by Him during His personal ministry here on earth.

3. We believe in the order of New Testament commands: (1) Repentance (2) Faith (3) Baptism (4) The Lord’s Supper.

4. We believe in a regenerated church-membership.

5. We believe in an absolute equality of mem bership.

6. We believe in restricted communion.

7. We believe in the perpetuity of the church, that it has been persecuted in every century since the days of Christ and the apostles, but it has never persecuted anyone.

8. We believe that the baptism of John the Baptist was Christian baptism and besides it there is no other scriptural baptism.

Our churches believe in and support missions in local, state, interstate and foreign fields. We believe the following doctrines to be sound and in perfect harmony with the teachings of God’s Word: 1. We believe that love one for another as Jesus loves the believer manifests our discipleship, proves our love for God and symbolizes our authority as New Testament churches. Love is therefore the great commandment

123

of the LORD Jesus Christ upon which all others are dependent (Matt. 22:35-40; John 13:34, 35; John 15:12; 1 John 4:7-21; 1 John 5:1-3; Rev. 2:4, 5). 2. We believe in the infallible, verbal inspiration of the whole Bible and that the Bible is the all-sufficient rule of faith and practice (Psalm 119:160; 2 Tim. 3:16, 17). 3. We believe in the personal triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, equal in divine perfection (Matt. 28:19). 4. We believe in the Genesis account of Creation (Gen. 1; 2). 5. We believe that Satan is a fallen angel, the archenemy of God and man, the unholy god of this world, and that his destiny is the eternal lake of fire (Isa. 14:12-15; Ezek. 28:11-19; Matt. 25:41; 2 Cor. 4:4; Eph. 6:10-17; Rev. 20:10). 6. We believe in the virgin birth and sinless humanity of Jesus Christ (Matt. 1:18-20; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Peter 2:22). 7. We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ (John 10:30; John 1:1, 14; 2 Cor. 5:19). 8. We believe the Holy Spirit is the divine Administrator for Jesus Christ in His churches (Luke 24:49; John 14:16, 17; Acts 1:4, 5, 8; Acts 2:1-4). 9. We believe that miraculous spiritual manifestation gifts were done away when the Bible was completed. Faith, Hope and Love are the vital abiding Spiritual Gifts (1 Cor. chapters 12—14). 10. We believe that Man was created in the image of God and lived in innocency until he fell by voluntary transgression from his sinless state, the result being

The good Lord willing, the messengers of the churches of the American Baptist Association will meet in Daytona Beach, Florida, on June 20, 21 and 22 for the 92nd meeting. I prayerfully encourage the pastors and church members to make your plans now to attend the meeting and be blessed by the Christ-honoring singing and the preaching of the Word by men of God. The messenger meeting affords everyone the wonderful opportunity to visit with friends of many years, make new friends and visit with missionaries and their families. Pastors, please challenge the church that you are privileged to serve and urge the people of God to make it possible for you to attend. Some churches may need to begin a fund now to send their pastor.

Daytona Beach is a wonderful place to enjoy a vacation with your family. The messengers met in Daytona Beach in 2006 and many pastors and their families took advantage of the beauty of this city to spend time together. Bro. Edgar N. Sutton, Director of Meeting Arrangements, works very hard in behalf of the churches to keep prices as low as possible for meals and hotels. Bro. Sutton is a tireless worker. I commend Bro. Sutton for the many years that he has served and continues to serve in helping the messengers of the churches in regard to the annual meetings.

The American Baptist Association is a fellowship of Missionary Baptist churches laboring together to preach the gospel to the world (Mark 16:15). It is the will of God that His churches be triumphant churches for His glory! The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 2:14, “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ.” The triumphant church will:

EXALT THE SAVIOR!Almighty God has highly exalted His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus (Philippians 2:9). If a church pleases God, that church must exalt Jesus! The word exalt means “to lift up above.” The triumphant church is to lift up Jesus to a lost and dying world.” The Psalmist declared, “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together” (Psalm 34:3). The prophet Isaiah proclaimed, “O Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee; I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth” (Isaiah 25:1). The triumphant church will:

EDIFY THE SAINTS!The Bible says of the early churches, “Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied” (Acts 9:31).

The word “edify” is an architectural term that means to build up. By the inspiration of God, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). The people of God are to edify one another through the preaching and teaching of the Word of God, praying for one another and encouraging one another in the work of the Savior. The triumphant church will:

EVANGELIZE THE SINNER!The Bible says, “Therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:4). Evangelism is the center and circumference of the triumphant church. Bringing lost souls to Jesus Christ is the principal responsibility of every child of God in the triumphant church.

The great heart of God is wrapped up in the glorious work of evangelism. New Testament evangelism is obeying the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

With the help of God, may the churches of the American Baptist Association be triumphant churches for His honor and glory! I am looking forward to seeing you in Daytona Beach!

Let’s Make Plans Now To Go To Daytona Beach

92nd Annual Messenger Meeting of the American Baptist AssociationDaytona Beach, Florida

June 20-22, 2017

God blessed us with good attendance at the 91st Annual Messenger Meeting of the American Baptist Association in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Thanks so much for all the cooperation in booking rooms at our contracted hotels. This enabled all rent for meeting space to be paid, which is a savings of several thousand dollars. Tulsa is a great city for our annual meeting. In 2007 and 2016 we experienced our largest attendance. We also had the most exhibits we have had in the past few years. We are now making plans for the 92nd annual messenger meeting the week of June 19, 2017, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Our schedule will remain the same as in past years. We last met in Daytona Beach 11 years ago. The attendance was great. Hopefully the 2017 meeting will be even greater. We have a room block of 500 rooms at the Hilton Daytona Beach Ocean Front Hotel. The shepherds praised Godfor the birth of Jesus, andthey told everyone theycould about Jesus’ birth. How can we show Jesushow excited we are that

He came to earth as a baby?

Others knew that Simon Peterand Andrew loved Jesus because

If not, what can you doto show them?

8 • SPLASH

Has your church splashed into the new

Children’s Chapel materials?

The SPLASH curriculum is de-signed for children in Pre-K and Kindergarten but can be adapted for older or younger children. It is also designed to accompany the SPLAT curriculum, but can be used on its own. These adaptations can be found in each lesson and allow for teachers to teach up or down according to where their students are spiritually.

Active learning allows students to get up out of their seats and experience God’s Word and the truths found in it. We believe when students experience transformational truths, they tend to stick with them longer and have a lasting effect on their

hearts and minds.

Tell — Tell everyone about Jesus.

Each week students will go through all five areas, as they grow closer to Jesus by practicing and learning more about their faith.

The SPLAT approach is based on three main goals

• Present truths that transform.

• Connect students with the cross through life application.

• Produce abundant life in the hearts of students.

I have been privileged to write the SPLAT Preschool Winter lessons. I hope each teacher using these lessons will grow and learn as a preschool Sunday School teacher and will enjoy the activities designed to share Bible truths with two and three year olds. I am excited about the new format. The SPLAT Sunday School curriculum provides multiple ideas on how to teach each lesson so that you may pick and choose those that will benefit your students the most. I developed several backdrop, lesson props and costume ideas for you to consider. As the Sunday School teacher, pace yourself and pick a project or two to prepare per quarter. If you continue to teach the same age-group, then you can tackle another project the following year. Some of the lessons require you to have some materials that may need to be ordered or purchased Online. Look over the supply lists for all lessons at the beginning of the quarter so that you will be prepared with items you may use for each lesson. Remember you will only need those items for the activities that you choose. May God bless you and your students.

As you view your set of SPLAT Pre-K/Kindergarten Teacher Leaflets, you will see multiple suggestions for each lesson element. You do not have to use all of the teaching options provided under each heading. Instead, choose one or more of the teaching options for use based on how your students learn, the amount of time you have to prep, what best fits your teaching style and based on how you believe the Holy Spirit may be directing your teaching time.

SPLAT visuals can be identified by lesson number and the portion of the lesson in which the visual will be used. Visuals have a unit visual for each unit in the quarter. The unit visuals should be hung in a special place in your classroom to help students know what unit they are studying and to help them memorize each unit memory verse. Each set of visuals also contains the Roman Road to Salvation Visual. This visual should be placed in your classroom where students can easily view it and use it at various times throughout the quarter to present the gospel message.

Finally, you should notice that there are fourteen lessons available for this quarter but only thirteen weeks. The fourteenth lesson in the quarter is the Theme Lesson. The Theme Lesson allows you to present a lesson out of the chronological scope and sequence in order to fit a specific holiday in each quarter. Whether you use it or not is up to you. If you choose to use the Theme Lesson, you would either combine two of the lessons from this quarter or simply skip one and then fill in the chronological gaps for your students the next week.

Winter Quarter 2016-2017 Spring Quarter 2017

The winter season is one of great irony. It is a time when everything has lost its colorful beauty and blossom. It’s a time when much of life appears to be dried up, closed up and hemmed in—dead. The outward at-face appearance looks lifeless to the world, but nothing could be further from the truth. A tree that has shed its leaves and points its bare branches to the sky is a great example of this. The tree is quite alive, holding back and storing up its life to come forth at the appropriate and designated time. So it was with the coming of Jesus. God had promised that He would send a Savior, but His timing left a large chasm of wanting and waiting in the hearts of His people. One day, however, God’s promise was fulfilled in the birth of Jesus Christ. God had His perfect plan in motion the whole time, while the years seemed endless on humanity’s end. We may often feel that chasm wide as we wait for the Lord to answer prayers, provide means or even come back to receive us unto Him. Just trust in God’s faithful promises. As we must go through the often turbulent, bleaching and cleansing winter, another season will soon dawn. We need but watch and wait for the perfect timing of our precious Lord!

We will be studying in the New Testament for the winter quarter and will return to the Old Testament in the spring. The focus of the thirteen lessons in the winter series is Jesus and His earthly ministry. I pray that you and your students will grow spiritually through the study of these lessons about Jesus. As you prepare and teach these lessons, remember to utilize all the included materials. They will help you structure your classroom time into efficient, effective learning of God’s Word. In addition to each Sunday lesson, a bonus lesson about the true meaning of Christmas—Jesus—is included. Throughout the quarter, you will notice the use of watercolor paints. I chose this particular art medium because its soft, blending colors remind me of winter. Students enjoy using different art supplies from time to time so that providing watercolor paint sets for your students to use throughout the quarter would be a fun way to incorporate this art element. Thank you for being a willing, faithful servant of the Lord. Reaching the souls of young people for Christ is of eternal importance, and I am thankful that the Lord is using you to do it.

We want to help the students understand who Jesus is, and how a personal relationship with Jesus forms the basis of all of their other relationships (with one another, with their parents, with their church). In the Ten Commandments, we see that the first four commandments govern man’s relationship with God. From there, the rest of the commandments govern man’s relationships with one another. The New Testament commandment to love God and love one another sets the tone for every relationship we have.

Please know that we are praying for you as you prepare to teach this series of lessons, and that you are doing kingdom work in your place. You may never know the depth of the impact your teaching will have on the lives of your students, but we are thankful for the work that you do.

All God’s best to you,

Make a list of some of the sins you have committed. Be honest because you aren’t going to share this list with anyone. Were any of the sins on your list like those in the text verses? Ask God to forgive you of your sins and then destroy the list. When God forgives you, He takes away your sins. Destroying your list will help you see how sin is dealt with when you confess it to God and ask for forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

Throughout your Christian life, I am sure you have heard many sermons and lessons on the prophet Jonah. All of them, no doubt, are true and convicting. Jonah ran from God; Jonah left the presence of God, and Jonah refused to do the will of God (Jonah 1:2). From a pastor’s point of view, the book of Jonah is filled with good preaching. Sometimes, however, the obvious clouds are the true lesson. A prophet—a man of God—who refused to preach the Word of God to people who needed it, is intriguing. We can identify with a man who, right or wrong, decides to take matters into his own hands and decides to do things his way. We are like Jonah. He is one of us. He is…human. Have you ever wondered why Jonah refused to go to Nineveh? Wouldn’t it have been easier if Jonah had simply submitted to God and said, “The citizens of Nineveh need your Word and I’ll go preach to them,” but Jonah didn’t do that. In fact, Jonah went in the opposite direction. The events depicted in the book of Jonah occurred around 862 BC. Jonah’s ministry, how-ever, started long before he ran from God and headed for Tarshish. Twenty-five years earlier, the “word of the Lord God of Israel” (2 Kings 14:25) came to Jonah, he obeyed the word of the Lord, and King Jeroboam II ran the Syrians out of Israel (2 Kings 14:23-27). What happened that changed Jonah?

Place. The city of Corinth is situated on an isthmus connecting the lower peninsula of Greece with the mainland. Because of its setting, Corinth was in Paul’s day a thriving commercial center bustling with shipping, trading and banking. Such circumstances encouraged a mixed, cosmopolitan population. Corinth’s location also encouraged a pragmatic, anything-goes attitude. Consequently, immorality was rife in that city, so much so that to call anyone a Corinthian was to inflict one of the greatest insults possible in that day.

Writer. The Holy Spirit used the apostle Paul as the human author of 2 Corinthians, a matter upon which there is nearly universal agreement even among liberal observers and commentators. Paul had established the church in Corinth during his second missionary journey (Acts 18:1-11). In his previous epistle to that congregation, he addressed several problems which beset these believers. Second Corinthians is the product of a pastor’s deep and abiding love and concern for the people to whom he once ministered.

Purpose. Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to follow up on some of the exhortations he had given in his earlier letter to that church. The issues which he dis-cussed in this subsequent letter were matters which continued to be prob-lems for that congregation. Some of the more pressing matters which Paul addressed were the church’s treatment of the man who had been disciplined for fornication, the collection of the offering for the poor saints in Jerusa-lem and a reiteration of his apostolic authority.

Distinctives. Paul’s second epistle to the church in Corinth included some singularly distinctive features. Like Galatians, this letter is intensely per-sonal and deeply emotional because of the nature of the topics discussed in it. More so than in any of his other writings, Paul revealed to the Corinthian believers the depth and the strength of his love, the grief he felt because of their sins and the comfort he experienced from their repentance.

Date. This epistle was written fairly soon after 1 Corinthians. It evidently was penned shortly after Paul’s departure from Ephesus and during his sojourn in Macedonia. (Compare 2 Corinthians 1:8; 9:1-4.) Based upon chronological conjectures by various authorities, it seems probable that 2 Corinthians was written toward the close of AD 57 or early in AD 58.

Organization. Since this epistle was a personal letter, it is difficult to determine a specific outline of its contents. There are three divisions that appear quite prominently, however: (1) an explanation of Paul’s principles of actions (chapters 1—7), (2) an exhortation regarding the offering to be sent to the church in Jerusalem (chapters 8 and 9) and (3) an exoneration of Paul’s apostolic authority (chapters 10-13).

Introduction to 2 Corinthians

The theme of Second Corinthians is encouragement for those who are undergoing the trials of life. As we study the men God used to write the Bible we might imagine that they were superior saints who never suffered depression and heartache, but we would be wrong. Even Jesus endured great agony as He faced the cross, Luke 22:44. He endured the contradiction of sinners, Hebrews 12:3, which means that He was misunderstood and under appreciated by those in His life. Paul felt this as well. As he stated in this lesson, he was at times pressed out of measure and even despaired of life. Those who have endured trouble know exactly what those phrases mean. The pressures of earthly life can distort our perspective and make us weary of living. This book was not written simply to define depression. These Scriptures are given to provide us heavenly comfort and a divine cure when we go through times of difficulty. God inspired Paul to write this letter to encourage the brethren in Corinth who were enduring difficult times in their service to the Lord. A great part of this encouragement was establishing Paul’s God given authority to teach and to lead. One of the fiery darts of Satan is casting doubts in our minds about the veracity of those who preach the truth.

∑ ∑

When you go through the inevitable valleys of discouragement, read the strengthening truths presented in this book, and you will find help for your soul.

I. God Comforts Us So That We Can Comfort Others Following a brief salutation and identification, Paul got down to business with this wonderful series of praises for God. We often hear that prayer changes things, and it does, but praising the Lord is also a great force in helping us deal with our troubles. It is not possible to praise and complain at the same time. When we praise God we shift our attention from our own troubles and instead we focus on the wonderful blessings God has given us. Paul began by stating that God is the source of all comfort. This comfort is available to us because God is who He is. He is the father of Jesus Christ and Jesus is our Savior. Our relationship to God is based on our relationship to Jesus.

∑ ∑

In times of discouragement, we can easily forget who we are. Every child of God has a great and wonderful relationship with God through his or her faith in Jesus.

God is shown to be the God of all mercies and comfort. The overriding purpose of God in all His dealings with us is to offer us blessing and comfort. God never sets out to harm anyone in any way. This is not to say that harm cannot come to us, but God’s desire is to bless not to harm us. God is not willing that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance, 2 Peter 3:9. We cannot apply the purpose and plan of God to our lives unless we understand it. Part of that understanding is to realize that God comforts us in our troubles so that we can offer comfort to others. We are all living examples to each other and when we see another Christian endure difficulties in a gracious and godly manner we are encouraged to endure our trials in the same way. It is sobering to realize it, but observing the way you handle your trials may be the only glimpse of godly conduct that some people will ever see. We should also understand that although we readily focus on the tribulations in our lives, the blessings are as abundant as the troubles. When we are hurting in one particular spot it is hard to realize that most of our other parts are functioning correctly and without pain. When we are extolling our troubles it will help us if we also count our blessings. Above all else we should realize that we are bound to one another in love and fellowship. What one child of God endures is for the consolation and comfort of others. Suffering in the life of a child of God is never without a purpose and use. No tribulation is pleasant, but it can yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness. When it does, if is a good thing.

∑ ∑

II. Suffering Leads to Consolation There are several different words for suffering in the Greek language and Paul used at least five of them in this letter. There are sufferings that come from living in a sinful world. It is not possible, or for that matter even desirable, to live entirely free of pain. All men suffer to one degree or another because we are sinful creatures and we live in a sinful world, but there are also sufferings that uniquely come to the children of God.

∑ ∑

Comfort in Suffering (2 Corinthians) Excerpts from Lesson 1 of the Winter Quarter

We read in 2 Timothy 3:12 “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” There are no exceptions to this rule.

He has written Young People’s Sunday School literature, the BTC Adult Quarterly, and he currently writes the Sunday School Adult Quarterly used in the churches of the American Baptist Association.

Our sufferings as Christians are always equaled or exceeded by the consolation and hope that are in Christ. Hope is a gift from God, I Corinthians 13:13. Saved people always have the ability to hope for a better day. Sadly, lost people do not. A lost man may be living the very best day of his life right now. A child of God has not begun to imagine the blessings that God has in store for him, 1 Corinthians 2:9. The result is that the troubles of the children of God should always be moderated by the hope that is in their hearts. We can concentrate so much on the pain that we forget the future joy, but we should try our best to keep our focus on our spiritual future when we go through valleys of suffering.

∑ ∑

Paul was even fearful that his life might end because of this trouble. Notice that he did not specifically tell us what the problem was. It truly did not matter. We do not have to imitate the suffering of others in order to help them. Paul was in a desperate situation at this time and he wanted his brethren to know about it.

∑ ∑

All Christians must endure hardship, no matter who they are or what responsibilities they may have in the kingdom of God. If God spared not His own Son, and permitted His Apostles to suffer, why should anyone today think that they should be exempt from troubles and suffering?

III. Spiritual Resources in Times of Suffering It is tremendously helpful to learn that for Christians, sufferings and troubles are never a permanent situation. We are led through the valley of the shadow of death; we do not have to stop in the middle and stay there. All our troubles will one day cease and we will find eternal rest with our Lord. However, for the wicked, the worst is yet to come. For the lost, a season of peace and prosperity on earth will one day give way to an eternity in hell. In order to put our sufferings in the proper perspective, we have to begin with our salvation. God has delivered us from so great a death. We are saved, and if we are saved, we have the means to deal with any trial that can come our way. Our faith in Jesus and our love for God will enable us to have hope in the darkest of moments. Note that three tenses of salvation are mentioned here. Jesus has delivered us in the past. He will keep on delivering us as we go

through life, and He will be there to deliver us in the future. All this is based on our trust in him. Faith does not disregard other facts, but faith itself is also a fact. Our faith in God must be made a part of any decision or situation in the life of a believer in Jesus. Whether we realize it or not, Jesus is in our future, and if we know Him as our Savior, He is there to receive us unto himself, that we may be with Him always.

∑ ∑

There are very positive steps we can take in times of suffering. One that we noted before is to praise God for His blessings, because our blessings are always greater than our troubles. Then we can pray. Notice that Paul did not instruct these brethren to pray for themselves. Instead he asked them to pray for him and those who were with him. Intercessory prayer can help us restore a proper perspective. The folks in Corinth were having difficulties, but Paul and those with him were in despair for their very lives.

∑ ∑

God is working out His purposes in the trials and troubles of our lives. This does not mean that every trouble will automatically produce spiritual growth. Troubles can make us bitter and resentful, or they can make us stronger in the Lord. The difference is in how we handle them. If we trust God, obey His Word, praise His name, and pray for others, even in the depth of our difficulties, then we can grow in grace and knowledge. On the other hand, if we turn inward and become selfish we can also stagnate spiritually. Trouble is an opportunity for us to increase and strengthen our prayer life. In the end, anything that draws us closer to God is a blessing, even if it is a time of trial. Troubles can also draw us closer to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Our trials make us dependent on the prayers of others, just as Paul requested prayer from the Corinthians. Troubles can be used as opportunities for us to glorify God and demonstrate to a lost world that we are truly different. If everything went smoothly in your life, how would you demonstrate your faith? When we find ourselves in times of trouble, trial and testing, we should remember and renew our relationship with God. When we look to God we are looking in the right place to find a way through whatever trials we may encounter as we live for Him. n

Baptist Training Course (BTC) quarterlies feature 13-week Bible studies for every age group. The Junior High, Young People’s and Adult quarterlies cover the same topics and Bible verses, but are written on different levels. Great for small groups on Sunday or Wednesday evenings.

Godly living. What does it mean? The word godly has the general idea of something devoted to God thereby giving Him honor and glory. Living would present the thought of the manner of a person’s conduct. So, taking these two words together would mean the manner by which a person conducts his or her life is devoted to God for the purpose of bringing Him honor and glory. The goal of this study is to direct our attention toward this noble purpose. God wants His people to behave in such a manner that honors Him.

Who is Jesus? During His earthly ministry, Jesus asked this question of His disciples. He wanted them to consider His identity and asked what their opinion of Him was. This question is still important today. People need to consider who Jesus really is. Many people think of Him as a good teacher or a moral example. While Jesus was a good teacher and a moral example, He was far more than these things.

When we pray we must be willing to accept God’s answer. His desire may well be vastly different from the nature of our request. We have to believe His answer is what will bring Him glory in our lives. Our privilege and responsibility is to be faithful to enter our prayer closet regularly and often.

During Lincoln’s presidency, a guest at the White House tried to flatter him by saying, “Back in my home state people say the welfare of the nation depends on God and Abraham Lincoln.” With deep humility Lincoln responded, “Sir, you are half right.”

Thankfully, the welfare of our country is in God’s hands and not those of men. The apostle Paul said, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men” (1 Timothy 2:1). As president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln was one of the most prestigious men in the world. Yet, he willingly admitted his inability to govern properly without the help of Almighty God.

True success comes by meditating on God’s Word, finding His will and then doing it. As a result David said that an individual “shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season . . . and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” (Psalm 1:3).

Dr. James M. Jones earned a B.S.E degree from Henderson State University and a Th. D. Degree from the Missionary Baptist Seminary in Little Rock, AR. He has spent forty-eight years in ministry, pastoring and serving as interim pastor, and also as an ABA United States Air Force chaplain for five years. He is married to the former June McWha. They have three children, Jason, Janee’ Brandon, and Justin. They also have four grandchildren. In addition to Lighting the Path, he has also written The Divine Design for Relationships. His testimony: “After preaching for forty-eight years, I have come to realize that there is absolutely nothing in this world that is as important as having a close relationship with God. The purpose of this book is to foster and encourage the reader to spend a little time in the Word with God every day for a year. Hopefully, that will continue for a life time.”

A Day with GodPsalm 84:9-12

Do you feel like God is holding out on you, or are you holding out on Him? “No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly” (84:11). It is impossible to understand what eternity is, or what Heaven is like. The psalmist wrote that he would rather spend one day with the LORD than 1,000 days with the wicked. Try to imagine what it would be like to spend a day with God. If you knew that Jesus was coming to your house, what would you do? Would you ask your wife to clean the house, or your husband to mow the lawn? Would you remove all materials from your home that would be offensive? Would you spend some time in prayer, that you might be cleansed? Do you think that God would consider spending one day with you? He would if only you have the shield; the shield is the LORD Jesus. If you were to enter God’s presence today, and you might, God would not see your evil thoughts, deeds, and so forth, if you have Jesus. He would give you grace and glory. Wait! There is more. If you were to spend one day in God’s presence, what would you expect Him to do for you? There is a requirement here, if you will “walk uprightly” (84:11). All of us are held blameless who have accepted the sacrificial death of Jesus, but if we walk uprightly, we will be walking with a divine purpose, with confidence, and with joy. Actually, we will be walking with the LORD. “O Lord of hosts, blessed [happy] is the man that trusteth in thee” (84:12). Are you happy? What does that say about your trust?

How Do I Know God Loves Me?Ephesians 3:14-19

Paul prayed the richest of prayers for Christians. By inspiration, God had him write down this prayer for us. One of the things he asked God for was that Christians might know the breadth, length, depth, and height of the love of Christ (3:18, 19). Paul’s heart’s desire was that we might comprehend that love. The question arises, “How do I know God loves me?” There are several ways that we can know that God loves us. First, He made us. He made us to have a loving relationship with Him. We are the objects of His love. He loves every person (2 Peter 3:9). He said, “I have loved thee with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3). God made you, knowing every mistake you would make and every sin you would commit. Yet, He made you, because He wanted someone to love. Second, God notices every detail of our lives. He notices the number of hairs you have on your head (Matthew 10:30), and He notices every aspect of your life. Third, he gave us the capacity to have pleasure. Do you like long buffets or tasty desserts? Who gave you taste buds? Do you enjoy sunsets or beautiful colors? Do you enjoy beautiful music? Who gave you ears and eyes? God gave us “richly all things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17) because He loves us. Next, He sent Christ to die for us. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Do you know anyone who would die for you? There is someone who already has. What further proof would we need, to know that God loves us (John 3:16). Last, He forgives us when we ask. “For whoseoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). We feel so small, insignificant, and unworthy of His love. We can understand why Paul prayed that we might comprehend the breadth, length, depth, and height of God’s love. To the extent that we comprehend the love of God we are “filled with all the fulness of God” (3:19).

V

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). The title of this second volume is Lighting the Path—New Testament. This world for the most part is walking in darkness. It seems to be getting a little darker with each passing day. However, light will come with a knowledge of Jesus Christ as one’s personal Savior and an understanding of His Word. The purpose of this book is to help bring “the light of life” to the reader. From the list of the earthly lineage of Jesus Christ in Matthew to the unveiling of Jesus Christ in Revelation, an effort has been made to bring light to our path one day at a time, every day of the year, from every book in the Bible. This book contains a Bible reading from every book in the New Testa ment. There is also a brief synopsis of every book in the New Testament as well as Bible study/devotional thoughts from every book. It must be stated that it is absolutely essential for one to read the daily Scripture before reading the writer’s comments. This book could be labeled a Bible study/devotional book. Each devotional is built upon the daily Scripture reading. Therefore, it is imperative to get into the Scripture before getting into the thoughts about it. At the bottom of each study/devotional thought is a place to write in the date that you read the particular study. This is to help you indicate what devotional thought you read on what day should you not read the Bible studies/devotional thoughts consecutively.

Before You Read This Book

There is a vast difference between the saved and the unsaved. The book you are beginning to read sets forth the bright future of the saved, but there is no bright future for the unsaved—only death, judgment and eternal hell. Reader, are you saved? Have you been born again? Reader, are you a child of God? If the answer is a perplexing “No,” do not despair. There is good news for you! Now, let us observe the condition and need of man that we may better understand God’s love and provision for him. 1. Man is a sinner. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). God’s glory is His holiness, His perfection, and all of us have fallen short of that. Comparing ourselves with others we may decide we are good, but when we stand by the side of Jesus Christ, we know we are sinners. 2. God loves sinners. Even though we are sinners, God loves us and gave His Son to die in our place that we might live forever (Romans 5:8; John 3:16). All our sins were laid on Christ. “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). 3. Christ the Son of God, the Creator of the world, left heaven and came to earth (John 1:1-3, 14). He was begotten of the Holy

Spirit and born of the virgin, Mary (Matthew 1:18-23). He lived as a man, lived without sin, and then died for sinners. He who knew no sin suffered the wrath of God against sin for us. “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18). 4. Christ is the Savior of sinners. Sin is deadly. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). The payoff for a life of sin is death, eternal death—hell. Unsaved friend, recognize that sin is first of all against God and secondly against man. Apologize to God for your sinful course of life. Forsake sin and look to Christ as your one and only Savior. The precious promise is—“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31). “Believe” means to trust. So, commit yourself without reservation into the hands of Him who died for you and rose again the third day and you will have peace within and with God. Then let Christ be Lord of your life and enjoy a continuing “peace of God which passeth all understanding” (Philippians 4:7). While you serve God you may also look forward to the return of Christ and eternal victory through Him. Make your decision now. Turn from sin and look to Christ, and let this be the day of salvation for you.

The Golden AgeOne Thousand Yearsof Universal Peace

Paul Goodwin

More than twenty-eight hundred years ago, Amos, one of God’s pre-exile prophets to Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II, spoke of the Golden Age in this manner: “The plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed” (Amos 9:13). Isaiah, God’s pre-exile prophet to Judah during approximately this same time period, referred to this Golden Age more than any other of the Old Testament prophets. He described it as a time when “he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Isaiah 2:4). Paul Goodwin, preacher, pastor, evangelist, author, seminary professor and president, loved to inspire his students to a greater zeal of leading souls to Jesus Christ by talking about this “Golden Age” in his classes at the Missionary Baptist Seminary in Little Rock, Arkansas. God used this twentieth century AD preacher to remind us of this eighth century BC prophecy. Dr. Goodwin had a zeal to reach lost souls with the gospel of Jesus Christ so that they could be ready for this wonderful time in the future. Through the reproduction of this little book by Brother Goodwin, God is still using him to remind the world today of this glorious future for His children on this very earth, when Satan will be incarcerated in the bottomless pit and he shall “deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season” (Revelation 20:3). Even though we are living in a time of “wars and rumours of wars,” the Bible tells of a time of peace when the Prince of Peace, who is the “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS,” shall rule with ironclad authority over all the kingdoms of this world. It will be a reign of righteousness for one thousand years on this very earth. Afterward the “heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10). Then God will usher in the eternal Heaven ages with “new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13). However, during “The Golden Age,” God will demonstrate to all mankind what could have been on this earth if man would only have been subject to Him and His laws. May all former students of Dr. Paul Goodwin, as well as others, be challenged to use this little book as a tool of evangelism in reaching this lost world with the good news that there is something better in the future for those who are prepared.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just

to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all

unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

that all mankind are sinners (Gen.
