After a frustrating season on the working Gundog front with Quail & Duck departing in droves and Trialers having to drive great distances to find a paddock with game the trials all in all have been successful.
We are now into the back end of the club year and with that come the Spaniel & Retriever Field Trials, the first weekend of which was held the past weekend at Ballan.
A full report of the trials is in the newsletter but I just want to mention in this report the disappoint-ment that again this year there wasn’t one Retriever entered, especially with the weekend being devoted to Jack Montasell. Jack was the only person to enter a Retriever for several years and with his demise I wonder whether we shall see retrievers compete in this discipline again?
The Open trial on Sunday was the Jack Montasell Memorial Trial and whilst I appreciate that there may not be any Retrievers out there at Open level, there must be Retrievers that are at Novice level? It’s a sad state of affairs when Spaniel & Retriever Trials are abandoned by the retriever fraternity when realistically a good retriever, trained in the field, has equally as good a chance of winning as a spaniel.
My thanks must go to Brian Kennedy who came along as a spectator with his young 9 month old Labrador, which I believe was out of respect for Jack and to Wally and his lovely Golden Re-triever who also came along to have a look.
Those that attended and entered their dogs had a couple of good days I hope and we had a re-sult each day.
Our next Spaniel & Retriever Field Trial is at the end of August. The judge will be Mr Steve Aus-tin.
Interestingly after years of nagging through this newsletter, I have recently had two people come to me who are interested in helping with the organization of the Club’s Trials — both are new to the sport and want to be involved at a greater level. My thanks to both of them, I look forward to working with you for next year.
The club held their Open show recently which was well attended and enjoyed by those that were there.
Once again I would like, on behalf of the club, to thank Lee & Mary for their tireless enthusiasm which makes the Club’s shows such a success.

PRUE WINKFIELD …… SUCCESS IN THE FIELD!!!
The 27th May was a pretty special day for Prue Winkfield and Yorifeld German Shorthaired Pointers. Not only did six year old Yorifeld Tornado (handled by his breeder Prue Winkfield) win All Age at the VGC Retrieving Trial to give him his Retrieving Trial Champion Title but, on the same day, Prue’s three year old bitch Yorifeld Dark Opal (handled by David Blacker) won at the VGC Pointer & Setter Open Field Trial which gave her her Field Trial Champion Title.
Prue has been breeding GSP’s for many years now and has had much success in trials in both disciplines.
Our cover photo is of Opal, Torn and the mother Joy—RT Ch Yorifeld Joy to the World.

MAY RETRIEVING TRIAL REPORT—by Margaret Hall
A U GU ST /SE PTE M BER 20 1 2
The May trial went off well even after a terrible weather report forecast.
At Lake Nillahcootie Saturday started out fine with a little drizzle during the day and Sunday was spectacular with a nice sunny day in store for
us all.
The entries were not high and we had to cancel the Restricted stake on Sunday due to lack of entries but we still had a great weekend.
Saturday include an All Age, Restricted and Novice stake with Noel and Kate Eltringham judging these events.
The view from our camp site was beautiful looking over the property towards a valley that moved across the Broken River to the farms house and then to the rolling hills in the background. This gave us some wonderful scenery to enjoy during the day. There was a nice lot of cover
over the ground and the level of the river and lake was high which gave us lots of nice water holes and swampy lagoons with high reed cover.
All Age results:
All Age Saturday - Judge Noel Eltringham 1st Place: K. Britton's ACOLON PRINCE OF CYPHER RRD (Imp Uk) 160.5 pts 2nd Place: P. Winkfields RT CH YORIFELD JOY TO THE WORLS 152.5 Pts 3rd Place: D. No other placing’s
Sunday we awoke to a cool but clear day and it just got better as the day went on. The judges quickly got into the task of judging the dogs the All Age soon sorted out dogs who were having trouble keeping on the right bird and many went our due to swapping game and retrieving the
wrong bird. The high cover allowed dogs to sneak around to the wrong bird out of view of the handler.
Both events were over by early afternoon and we were able to pack up and get home before dark, what an unusual occurrence.
SUNDAY - All Age Jim Hargreaves 1st Place: P. Winkfields YORIFELD TORNADO AARD 171 pts 2nd Place J. Stott's R.T. CH. KADNOOK DREAM A LIL DREAM 160 Pts 3rd Place: M. Davis' RT CH. Spaniel & Retriever Trials report
The clubs Spaniel & Retriever Trials were held by kind permission of Yaloak Estate at Ballan on the 21 & 22nd July
Once again this year we were struggling for entries to make a field and ran with 7dogs in the Novice Trial and 6 dogs in the Open Trial (9 dogs entered, 3 were scratched).
21st July Novice Trial
The competitors and spectators met at the Ballan Post Office at 8am and moved off to the Trial site in the Rosley Valley on Yaloak Estate. The Estate is set in spectacular countryside with views that are breath-taking. The Judge for the weekend was Mr Amand Golle from Queensland.
The trial started at the base of a hill in thick tussocks and gradually the dogs worked up the hill flushing rabbits that were sitting very tight. For a Novice Trial the standard of the dog work was very good.
The winner of the trial was Jamie Hutchinson with his ESS dog Glastonpark Taffy, 2nd place went to Mark Kivinen and his ESS bitch Walgeers Tess.
Ray Matthews young ESS bitch Glastonpark Holley picked up the Judges award of a Pocket Knife.
It was nice to see some new faces in the Field. Paul Hanson who had sustained Rib injury from a recent fall drove down from NSW and entered 2 dogs. Although he was obviously in some considerable pain as the terrain in places was quite steep, he competed his dogs well. He had entered in the Open Trial the following day but decided to withdraw after the Novice Trial due to not feeling well. A sad decision but all credit to him for his sportsmanship & determination. Without Paul’s entries there would not have been enough dogs to hold the Trial.
Another new face was Alex Hill who was running in his very first trial. Alex’s ESS bitch handled the occa-sion well and I think enjoyed herself as much as Alex did.
22nd July Open Trial
Six dogs ran in the Jack Montasell Memorial trial. All the entrants were English Springer Spaniels.
This was a difficult trial from the start as the ground didn’t hold the rabbits that it had the day before. From my vantage point I could see the rabbits creeping away as the dogs worked their way forward. All the dogs had to work very hard for the rabbits that they found and due to the terrain the shooting at times was difficult. The judge eventually called in an extra gun to put rabbits on the ground which proved very beneficial.
The wining dog was Rod Watts FTCH Walgeers Oscar who showed his class and style producing several rabbits throughout the morning. 2nd place went to Don Provost’s Wrangham Sexy Rexy. The points from this 2nd placing enabled Don to make his dog up to FTCH. Congratulations to Don & Rachel Greaves who bred him.
Again the Judge chose a dog & handler to award an encouragement award of a pocket knife. This award deservedly went to Alex Hill whose bitch worked very well indeed and showed great potential for the fu-ture.
On behalf of the club I would like to thank our Judge, Mr Amand Golle, our Steward for the weekend and the all the contestants especially those from interstate who support our Trials each year. Without this support we would be hard pushed to get the Trials off the ground.

MEMBER RESPONSE — The Llewellin Setter
LETTER TO THE EDITOR;
DEAR EDITOR,
I as a breeder of plain old ordinary working English Setters I dispute the article printed in Gun Dog News May edition
concerning the so called "Llewellin Setters". The article was so full of contradictions and double talk it was hard to
keep up with it. It is simply U.S. breeders trying to differentiate their breed lines, the American Kennel Club does not recognize the "Llewellin Setter" as a separate breed, nor does any other country's controlling body.
1996 the International Progressive Dog Breeders' Alliance and registry gave them FULL New Breed recognition for the first time , from Wikipedia.....any one know who the IPDBA is??????
Edward Laverack was the "god-father" of the English Setter he died in 1877, Purcell Llewellin took up the mantel
and bred with Laverack dogs in with some of the dogs he was developing. Over time he did develop a good working strain and some were imported to the US. However this predated the monitored registry's and National Bodies that
we have today....dog breeding was a fairly loose pastime.
In reading the article all of the traits and instincts which the authors claim to be the sole traits of the "Llewellin Set-
ter" can be found in any well bred working English Setter. In fact by their own descriptions their so called "Llewellin Setters" would be inferior to the top of the line English Setters we see today. For instance a good experienced setter
will know what the conditions require, in thick cover they will work much closer to the handler however in the wide open spaces they will work well away, and hold birds a good distance.... I have seen my old girl hold birds a 100 -
200 meters away in a open stubble paddock....that's what they are supposed to do. The article indicated that "Llewellin's seem to be a little sensitive when introduced to live birds and gunfire" a Setter that is "sensitive" to live
birds and gunfire....won't come in very handy as a hunting dog. I have never seen a Setter that was gun shy or bird
shy......they live for that. The article states that "Llewellins are ready for basic training while still under a year old" see what the owner of Runanset Luxury Liner thinks about that ..... "Tina" was placing in trials at 9 Months old and
won a National at just over a year old....maybe these "Llewellins" aint so great after all, but they will sleep on the couch....hell mine will sleep on the couch too and they won't move, English Setters are lap dogs that hunt nothing
new about that.
The cry that the "Llewellin" is more of a "team-player" than those "plain old ordinary Setters with some Llewellin
blood" is rubbish as they go on to say that they don't get lost often and will find their way home".....I have never "lost" one of my dogs even hunting heavily covered areas like Flinders Island. My dogs work as a team not only with
me but with each other and back naturally, all well trained Setters work for the handler ..... same goes for all gun-
dogs if they are not trained and controlled they will run the show and hunt for themselves there is nothing new about that.
I thought the most tell-tale quote from the article was "But Wente warns about breeders who give exaggerated sales
pitches about their own lines while making negative attacks on others"...."Watch out when you hear or see this sort of thing" Wente says, well my sentiments exactly if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black I don't know what is.
I could go on but I won't.....happy to put my Runanset dogs up against any of those "calmer, team-player, close working" blue blooded Llewellins....in any conditions and I would expect mine, or any well trained well bred working
English Setter, to find and retrieve what ever game birds there are, be with me when I get back to the truck at night, sleep in their kennel outside, and be ready to do it all again the next day.
Regards, Bob Crain Runanset Kennels - English Setters for the Field
Many thanks to Bob for his letter and insight into the Llewellin Setter ~ a Breed Profile was in our last magazine, taken from www.gundogmag.com, this will be available on our website for you to read if you missed out on our June July 2012 magazine. Wonderful to

Denis bought his first Irish Setter as a pet in1967. He was working in The State Bank of Vic at Camper-down at the time. He knew he had a Gundog so with the knowledge gained from a book from the local library and a gun he bought with money earned by carting hay for a local farmer, he set off on his career as a field trialer.
Murawai Geddah was bred by the late Peg McDonald of PuraPura. Her dam was Aust CH Murawai Ma-ranee and sire Rosmoyne Rusty. Rusty was used for the gun and had natural ability Geddah was a very head strong bitch but Denis' patience and perseverance along with advice [ not al-ways the best ]from the old timers in the district enabled him to bring her up to trial standard
She competed in the first Irish Setter Restricted Trial held in March 1971 judged by Mr Jack Thompson and was awarded the Winner It was extremely difficult for Denis to be able to compete in the trials during his novice years as the trial meeting place was not made public until 7pm on the night before. He would drive to Melbourne to stay with The late Graeme Lack and then discover that the trial was to held out in the Western Plains north of Camperdown.
Graeme used to tell him that "Field trialing wasn't for boys" He grew up very quickly when he had to com-pete against the "masters" of the sport. The Late Bob Dean and Jack Pontin ensured that he served his "Apprenticeship".
In October 1971 Denis had the opportunity to move his family to Bacchus Marsh where he was promoted in the Bank. When his wife asked where Bacchus Marsh was, He replied "they have field trials there"
Geddah went on to be come an Aust FT Champion and the foundation bitch of the " Russetray" Line of FT Champions Blood lines from Ireland, England, New Zealand and in later years from Sweden have produced 9 Aust FT Champions The most recent being "Russetray Royal Flush" the Winner of the 2012 Dogs Victoria FT Championship owned by Taner Ozsehogliu In 1985 Denis obtained his licence to judge trials and has judged at National and Inter national Trials. He also served on the RAFT com-mitee and is a " Life Member of The Irish Setter Club of Vic Inc. By Anne Everard
