Introduction: Academically Excellent and Passionately Catholic
Franciscan University of Steubenville is no ordinary university, and a
Franciscan education is no ordinary education. Rather, it’s an education as
rigorous and demanding as it is faithful — an education that challenges a
student intellectually, forms professionally and feeds spiritually.
The University, under the leadership of Fr. Sean Sheridan, TOR, has
recently begun a strategic planning process to fulfill its twenty-year
vision. The Vice President for Development will play a crucial role in the
attainment of the vision by building a culture of philanthropy and raising
the needed funds to succeed.
The University, from the Friars to the Board of Trustees, to the Deans of

them in raising money. The University hopes to
conduct a planning study in the late fall of 2018
and to head directly into a capital campaign in
2019 after inspiring donors by engaging them in
the strategic planning process.
Founded in 1946 by Franciscan Friars of the Third
Order Regular, Franciscan University integrates
strong academic programs with a lively faith
environment. The result is an extraordinary
education that draws close to 3,000 students from
all 50 states and 15 foreign countries. As part of its ongoing commitment to academic excellence and the
integration of faith and reason, Franciscan University adopted a newly revised liberal arts core curriculum in
2013. It is based on the Western intellectual tradition, the University’s Franciscan educational heritage and
the Catholic mission of the institution. The core purposefully exposes students to the fundamental
knowledge, critical authors, scientific findings and processes and diverse learning experiences they need to
become well-educated Catholics and citizens of the world.
Franciscan University of Steubenville is ranked #19 (tie) in 2018 Regional Universities Midwest by U.S. News
& World Report. For its excellent academics and conservative environment, Young America’s Foundation
rates Franciscan one of the top 10 conservative colleges in the nation. In 2016, Forbes magazine named
Franciscan University to its list of America’s Top Colleges.

Client Overview
Franciscan University of Steubenville has
chosen to be at the heart of the Church.
Catholic universities that choose to place their
missions at the heart of the Church have a
unique opportunity to contribute to the
making of a civilization that promotes life and
the dignity of the human person. They can
help transform our increasingly secular
culture — which promotes the radical
autonomy of the individual, erodes family life and denies any basis for distinguishing right from wrong —
into a culture of life.
In this decision, the University draws its inspiration from St. Francis of Assisi, who modeled his life after Jesus
Christ, faithfully served the Church and ultimately sparked a transformation of his society. By integrating
faith and reason in the classroom and in student life, Franciscan University commits itself to being a dynamic
educational instrument in the building up of the civilization of life and love today.

universities in the U.S. in terms of graduation and retention.
Eighty-one percent of its faculty holds the highest degree in
their respective fields.
A new engineering dual degree program recently joined Franciscan’s outstanding science programs, housed
in a modern 43,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art science facility. Students lay the foundation for future
success in Franciscan University's excellent, faith-filled Catholic learning community, earning either an
associate degree, a B.A. or a B.S., and then finishing at one of its engineering partner schools: the University
of Notre Dame, Gannon University or the University of Dayton.
Franciscan University's exciting study abroad
program in Gaming, Austria, brings more than
150 students each semester to study and live in a
restored medieval monastery in the foothills of
the Austrian Alps. From there, students can travel
to Rome, Assisi, Paris, Geneva, Lourdes, Munich —
any of the historic sites and Catholic shrines of
Europe. In addition, over 400 students participate
in missions of peace trips each year.
To provide peer support and a family-like atmosphere, Franciscan University involves students in faith
households. These are Spirit empowered, Christ-led groups of three or more Franciscan University students
of the same sex who seek to do the will of the Father in their
lives. These communities are formed to help members grow
in mind, body and spirit through mutual support and
accountability in the ongoing conversion process exemplified
in the life of St. Francis. Through the relationships found in
households, individuals are transformed and develop their
capacity to be an evangelizing presence in the University, the
Catholic Church and the world.

Passionately Catholic:
One of 22 “faithfully Catholic universities” cited by the Cardinal Newman Society, Franciscan University
follows the example of St. Francis of Assisi in finding its identity at the heart of the Catholic Church. The
University embraces the teachings of Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the Magisterium with a spirit of
Christian humanism that relates all learning to Jesus Christ. At Franciscan University, growth in mind, body
and spirit are achieved through the integration of faith and reason.
The relentless pursuit of truth is an ever expanding, never-ending adventure. The more a person learns
about God and His creation, the greater and more exciting the vistas that open up, waiting to be explored.
FRANCISCAN UNIVERSITY OF STEUBENVILLE PROSPECTUS | 10
The Catholic intellectual tradition is unparalleled in
history in that pursuit. Anchored firmly to the
Magisterium, the sure guide and guardian of truth,
the first universities were founded by the Catholic
Church, holding to St. Anselm’s maxim, “I believe
so that I might understand.”
In Ex corde Ecclesiae, Pope St. John Paul II said
Catholic universities have the “privileged task to
unite…the search for truth, and the certainty of
already knowing the fount of truth.” Reason and faith meet most especially on Catholic university campuses.
Franciscan University stands firmly in this tradition that has benefited humanity so greatly. It holds faithfully
to the teaching authority of the Magisterium while boldly pursuing all truth accessible to the curious mind.
Since all truth is from God and leads back to God, every honest pursuit of truth will begin with what God has
revealed — whether written on the human heart, accessible to reason without direct revelation or accessible
only through direct revelation — and be consonant with what His Church teaches.
The Catholic faith, especially as expressed in the Franciscan heritage, is also fundamentally evangelistic. In
the classroom, on campus and beyond, every University activity arises from a commitment to promote the
moral, spiritual and religious values its students need, so
that they might spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Everything from its liturgical life and eucharistic adoration
to athletics and on-campus concerts strengthens the
character of Franciscan University students, equipping
them to be salt and light for the world today.
A Franciscan University education is Academically
Excellent and Passionately Catholic.
