VICE PRESIDENT FOR DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI RELATIONS
University of South Alabama announces a nationwide search to recruit a new Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations.
Founded in 1964, The University of South Alabama (USA) is a comprehensive research university with an enrollment of over 16,000 students. The university offers a broad range of baccalaureate and graduate programs across ten colleges and schools. Graduate education comprises more than 40 graduate programs. The university also has a significant academic medical center enterprise which includes its College of Medicine as well as the components of USA Health: USA Medical Center, Children’s and Women’s Hospital, Mitchell Cancer Institute, and Ambulatory Services. USA has a 1,200-acre main campus located in Mobile, the third largest city in Alabama and one of the largest municipalities on the Gulf Coast. The selected individual will spearhead the university’s comprehensive campaign.
The Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations reports to President Tony Waldrop and is responsible for leading and supervising those programs related to fundraising and alumni relations. The Vice President, in concert with the President and the Board of Trustees, is expected to demonstrate leadership in the development of strategic plans to strengthen the financial resources of the University, to communicate with the constituencies of the University, and to enhance the relationships and support from the University’s 80,000+ alumni.
The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) and will be a demonstrated leader with major fundraising experience who will work effectively with the President and the President’s Cabinet. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. The ideal candidate will also have a keen sense of direction that will enhance and sustain the effectiveness of an advancement organization along with the energy to bring leadership to a complex set of university offices as well as a core of volunteer constituents.

$150-million comprehensive fundraising
campaign scheduled through 2020. The
campaign includes $50 million in commitments
from a single benefactor and follows another
successful campaign that raised more than $90
million.
South’s next Vice President of Development and
Alumni Relations will lead an experienced
senior leadership staff that has built a strong
culture of philanthropy among alumni, friends
and employees. The University includes more
than 70,000 alumni and, in addition to
graduates in the humanities and the arts, has a
generous base of supporters in professional
fields including engineering, computing, business, education and health care. Faculty
and staff are generous supporters of the University, with 60 percent of employees
making a gift in the most recent annual campaign.
Opportunities for the next Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations include

The Position
The Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations is a member of the leadership
team of Dr. Tony Waldrop, the University president since 2014. The Vice President for
Development and Alumni relations will:
Be responsible for institutional fundraising and alumni programs to include the
administration of fundraising campaigns and growing the USA National Alumni
Association membership and programs.
Work with the administration, trustees, faculty, staff and students to continue
and grow a campus culture that embraces philanthropy and meaningful
constituent engagement.
Provide support to the President in strategic thinking and planning related to
University friend-raising and fundraising and in cultivating the valuable
relationships that will increase philanthropic support for USA. The Vice
President also will support the Board of Trustees, especially the Development,

Endowment and Investments Committee, and the National Alumni Association
Board of Directors.
Lead long-range planning for the University Development and Alumni Relations
division ensuring that stretch goals are set and achieved to support the
University’s strategic planning initiatives and Alumni Association goals.
Recruit and grow a staff committed to developing and embracing best practices
with regard to prospect management, gift tracking and booking, stewardship,
donor communications, metrics, staff accountability, and professional
development.
Work with Academic Deans, Hospital Administrators, and Development and
Alumni staff, to guide and manage college, hospital, and other unit development
councils.
Serve as Campaign Director for the University’s Upward & Onward Campaign.
This comprehensive campaign has a goal of $150 million and is in the second of a
five-year public phase. To date, more than $90 million has been raised.
Enhance alumni engagement by developing comprehensive plans for
membership, communications, alumni activities, and programs to engage all
alumni as volunteers, advocates and donors to the University.
Manage a personal portfolio of donors (including trustees and
principal/leadership gift prospects) and meet goals for major gift attainment.
Qualifications and Attributes
The University of South Alabama intends to hire an accomplished Development and
Alumni Relations executive who will enthusiastically bring her/his expertise and
strategic leadership of these functions to the University. This person will have a proven
track record in one of these
areas (preferably both) and will
have an understanding and
familiarity with both functions.
Individuals having
demonstrated success in these
areas who have been in higher
education, philanthropic
organizations and health care-
related systems will be likely
candidates. Former
participation in a major capital
campaign is a real plus.

Among the attributes and characteristics, we are seeking in candidates are:
An undergraduate degree is required, a graduate degree is preferred;
Meaningful experience in the Development field or Alumni Relations field; experience in/familiarity with both is preferred;
Knowledgeable of the most modern technologies and techniques in the fields of Development and Alumni Relations;
The ability to work collegially with the President, Provost, other Vice Presidents and Deans to forward the University’s missions in these areas;
A leadership and managerial style which is consensus-driven, receptive to the ideas of others, supportive of subordinates, a team-builder;
Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills;
Unquestioned integrity and the highest character;
An enthusiasm about being part of the University community and an active participant in it;
Dedicated, sincere and goal-oriented.
