1. Purpose and Scope

Veritas NetBackup is supported and integrated with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Object Storage,

enabling Veritas NetBackup as a single pane of glass for backup and recovery as well as archiving

from any location to OCI Object Storage. The goal of this how-to guide is to show the steps to

configure OCI Object Storage as a backup target on Veritas NetBackup.

2. Veritas NetBackup Overview

Veritas NetBackup is a leading provider of cloud data management solutions, helping companies

worldwide to activate their data to drive more value and business insights and to transform modern data

environments. Veritas solutions comprise one of the industry/s leading portfolios in data protection and

recovery, cloud, virtualization, archive, file sync and share. Veritas becomes one of the first vendors to

support OCI, enabling customers to protect and recover data workloads in and to the cloud.

NetBackup Components

NetBackup provides a complete, flexible data protection solution for a variety of platforms. The

platforms include Microsoft Windows, UNIX, and Linux systems. NetBackup lets you back up, archive,

and restore files, folders or directories, and volumes or partitions that reside on your computer.

NetBackup includes the server and the client software as follows.

» Server software resides on the computer that manages the storage devices

» The master server manages backups, archives, and restores. You configure backup policies on the master server to determine the computers (clients) and the files that you want to back up. The master server is also responsible for media and device selection for NetBackup. The master server contains the NetBackup catalog. The catalog contains the internal databases that contain information about NetBackup backups and configuration

» Media servers provide additional storage by allowing NetBackup to use the storage devices that are attached to them. Media servers can also increase performance by distributing the network load. Media servers can also be referred to as device hosts

» Client software resides on the computers that contain data to back up

Prerequisites

This assumes users are familiar with logging into the NetBackup Admin Console and basic console

navigation. It also assumes users are familiar with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Requirements

» Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Tenancy with Object Storage

» OCI subscription

» OCI Object Storage host name

» OCI Object Storage access key

» OCI Object Storage secret key

» NetBackup

» Minimum version 8.1 is recommended

» The NetBackup Media Server Platform must be supported: http://www.veritas.com/docs/000115691

» NetBackup license – Platform, Traditional (DPO), or subscription license options are available

» Latest Cloud Configuration Package – Version 2.3.x minimum, recommend latest: http://www.veritas.com/docs/000125094


3. OCI Object Storage Secret Key Creation

OCI Object Storage Secret Key

1. On OCI Console, navigate to Identity, Users, User Details, and Amazon S3 Compatibility API

Keys.

2. Generate Secret Key and copy the generated Secret Key.


3. Locate Access Key. Example: ocid1.credential.oc1…

OCI Object Storage Bucket as Backup Destination

1. On OCI Console, create an Object Storage bucket as backup destination.


4. OCI Object Storage Configuration on NetBackup

NetBackup Cloud Storage Server Wizard

1. Login to the NetBackup Admin Console, then select Configure Cloud Storage Server.

2. Select Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Object Storage and click Next.


3. Enter Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Object Storage credentials.

a. Choose your Media server name

b. Access Key: [OCI Object Storage Access Key]

c. Secret Key: [OCI Object Storage Secret Key]


4. Click Add Cloud Storage. Enter Service host.

a. Service Host: OCI Object Storage, e.g.

https://[namespace].compat.objectstorage.[region].oraclecloud.com

5. Click Region Settings. Enter Region name, example: us-phoenix-1 and click Add.


6. Review Cloud Storage Service settings.

7. Optionally enable Compression and Encryption and click Next.


8. Confirmation dialog pane appears, settings cannot be changed once the Storage Server is

created, click Yes. Review and verify settings, then click Next.

9. Configuration of OCI Object Storage is now completed.


NetBackup Disk Pool Configuration Wizard

10. Select the previously created bucket.

11. Enter the Disk Pool name, set other parameters as necessary then click Next.


12. Review and verify settings, then click Next.

13. Disk Pool created.


14. Enter the storage unit name, set other parameters as necessary then click Next.

15. Final confirmation pane showing the Disk Pool Configuration Wizard is complete, select

Finish.


Backup Policy Configuration Wizard

16. Create a Backup Policy.

20. Specify files or folders to backup.

22. Specify backup schedule.

Backup and Restore

23. Perform backup. Right click on the policy and select Manual Backup. Click OK to start backup.


24. Backup in progress.

26. Perform Restore. Select Master Server, Backup, Archive and Restore. Under Restore Files

tab, select Source Client Name, Start Date, and End Date. Once the desired directories

appear in the Directory Structure, select the directory or required files to be restored. Continue

with Restore.

27. Restore completed.


5. Conclusion

This how-to guide captures step-by-step configuration of OCI Object Storage on Veritas NetBackup.

All you need is a set of OCI Object Storage credentials - OCI Object Storage host name, access key,

secret key from OCI. The integration enables Veritas NetBackup to be used as a single pane of glass

for backup and recovery as well as archiving from any location to OCI Object Storage.
