Guidance Welcome Back!! We hope that you all had a restful summer and are ready for a new year of success and learning. In order to help meet the needs of all of our students, Venice High School has a guidance department with counselors that are ready to support your student with a variety of programs. We are able to offer academic advisement, career guidance, individual and group counseling, grief counseling and other counseling services as needed. It is our goal to assist all students in the exploration of their strengths so they can achieve their academic and personal goals. We look forward to working with you and your student as the year progresses. **Seniors need to stay prepared. Keep your senior calendar in a visible location so that you do not miss any of the important dates. Visit the Rotary Futures office in the administration building often. Make sure that all of your required courses for graduation have been met. Remember that your Bright Futures GPA and your Venice High GPA are not the same. If you have questions about your Bright Futures status, please see your counselor. All courses do not qualify for Bright Futures, so make sure you are aware of the courses you need to take.** ** SCF Dual Enrollment students need to make sure that they have given their counselor a copy of their Fall 2016 schedule. If you drop a SCF course, let your counselor know immediately. Be aware that ECONOMICS at SCF does NOT meet graduation requirements. Also, be aware that some SCF classes only count for .5 high school credit. If you have any questions, please speak with your counselor. **PARENTS** Venice High will offer several evening presentations throughout the year that are devoted to specific grade levels. We encourage you to attend these presentations so that you can learn more about graduation requirements, scholarships, financial aid and post-secondary planning. These dates will be posted on our calendar once school begins. We hope to see you there. The counselors are assigned to students alphabetically by the student’s last name. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call your counselor:• Nicole Wolfe- A-C• Mike Bartlett D-Ho• Brenda Bartlett- Hu-Mi• Michele Cross- Mo-Sc• Mia Slaton- Se-Z

Venice High School is very lucky to have a unique program that assists students of all ages in planning for their post-secondary education. Since 2002, the Rotary Futures College Resource Center has assisted students with college and vocational school decision-making, SAT/ACT information, college/school applications, résumés, essays, scholarships, financial aid and much more. All services are FREE! Call 480-3178 or 488-6726 for more information. Visit our website at www.rotaryfutures.org and “Like” us on Facebook, www.facebook.com/rotaryfuturesScholarships Rotary Futures offers a Scholarship Database that holds over 600 scholarships totaling more than $60 million in scholarship dollars. The database is very user-friendly and is available to any Sarasota County High School Senior or college student. The beginning of Senior year is the best time to start using this database!

Résumés Résumés and letters of recommendation are important tools for seniors as they apply to post-secondary schools--college, technical or vocational schools. These are also important for when they apply for scholarships. Résumés help to organize your activities during your high school years. They can be sent with college applications and are a requirement of many scholarships. We have sample résumés to help you get started. Recommendations SENIORS—Recommendation letters ARE NOT REQUIRED by any of the state universities in Florida except New College of Florida and Florida A & M. Private and out of state schools may have other requirements. Please be respectful when requesting letters of recommendation from teachers and counselors. These letters take a great deal of time to write, and you need to give teachers and counselors AT LEAST 2 weeks notice to complete these important letters. Also, please only ask two (2) teachers to provide a recommendation. Do not ask for several and compare to see which you like best! This would be very inconsiderate of the time each teacher takes with your request. Recommendation letters WILL be required for the scholarship process. Scholarships may require different numbers of letters, so we recommend obtaining 2 community (job, church, community service) and 2 academic (teacher, guidance counselor) recommendations. Many counselors and teachers require a résumé or completion of a “Student Information Sheet” before they will write your recommendation. For scholarship purposes, students may make copies of these letters. Do not wait until deadlines—line up your recommendations now and give your teachers and community references plenty of time to write their letters!

Community Service Any student wishing to complete their volunteer hours to earn high school credit AND to count for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship MUST complete the ONLINE Sarasota County School District registration process and have the plan approved. Students register online at www.SarasotaCountySchools.net, click on the “Students & Parents” menu at the top of the page, under “Other Items” follow the link “High School Community Service.” ALSO, complete instructions are available on the VHS website > School Resources > Community Service Hours Info. Remember, community service is an excellent way for students to earn a half credit as well as obtain valuable experience for college essays and scholarship competitions. Important information and requirements:• Do NOT start the registration application until the student knows

where they are going to volunteer. The registration application does NOT save and you will be “locked” out if you do not complete the application when you start.

• Students should get each organization/activity approved before they volunteer. New organizations/activities may be added at any time! Once approved, each organization will have a unique log sheet that may be printed at any time.

• Once approved, the parent receives an email instructing them to print out log sheets. (Check your “junk” or “spam” folders.) Also, you may log in anytime to see if you have been approved and print out log sheets.

• Students MUST volunteer in the Sarasota County area.• NO MORE THAN 8 HOURS may be earned each day (due to

child labor laws).• NON-PROFIT and CHURCH RULES: All volunteering must

take place with a non-profit organization--exceptions include hospitals and assisted living facilities (enrichment activities only). Church Community Service must be outreach to the entire community—no religious instruction or activities that are part of being a member of the church will count, i.e. no activities during church services.

• Log sheets are turned in only when at least 75 hours have been accumulated. Students will earn .5 credit for 75 hours. Students may earn an additional .5 credit for another 75 hours, for a total of 1 credit. The maximum credit that may be earned is 1 credit total.

SAT and ACT TestingTEST FEES: SAT - $45.00, SAT with Essay - $57.00ACT - $42.50, ACT with Writing -- $58.50 Students who receive free or reduced lunch are eligible for test fee waivers. See Ms. Culligan in the 2nd Floor Admin. Office.***

College Representatives

to Visit Venice High School

Throughout the fal l , college representatives will be visiting Venice High School to give students information on their college. This is an excellent opportunity for students to get information as well as make personal contacts with those who can assist with admissions and scholarships. We schedule representatives to visit with students in the Rotary Futures College Resource Center. Students should check the visit calendar in Rotary Futures and sign-up to have a reminder sent to them. Remember—students must have their teacher’s permission to miss class to visit with the college reps.

Check your Bright Futures Scholarship Eligibility on the FloridaShines website – www.FloridaShines.org

1. Click on “Go to College” and select “Pay for College”2. Scroll down to the “Bright Futures Scholarships” paragraph3. Click on “Check Now.”4. Students will need their Florida Student Identifier Number, which is available from

their Guidance Counselor, Rotary Futures, or the VHS registrar.Florida Bright Futures Scholarship requirements are online!

Check out their website frequently to stay updated - www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/bf/

ü SENIORS— TEST SCORE INCREASES have greatly reduced the number of students who receive Bright Futures. Check your eligibility status (at www.FloridaShines.org) as soon as possible to determine if scheduling changes need to be made. You may need to take another academic class to boost your GPA or meet credit requirements.

ü Meet with your guidance counselor to confirm your schedule and compliance with course requirements. It is your job to know and meet the requirements of the Bright Futures Scholarship Program before high school graduation.

ü Confirm with the school that all your personal information is correct. Failure to have correct information such as social security number, address, and date of birth can delay your Bright Futures application.

ü Bright Futures only calculates GPA based on the core academic areas (check out www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/bf/for details).

ü Bright Futures will calculate GPA using the highest grades in each area, i.e. 4 highest English grades, 4 highest math grades (Algebra 1 and above), 3 highest science (does not include Health Science), 3 highest social studies, 2 highest foreign language (in same language)

ü Community Service hours are required for ALL levels of Bright Futures—100 hours to 30 hours depending on the scholarship. Check the website for more information.

ü Gold Seal Vocational Scholarship will ONLY fund technical and vocational degrees and certificates. Three specific classes in a technical or vocational program are required, and your guidance counselor can help you to schedule the three correct classes. For more info. on the Gold Seal award, go to www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/bf/newsrenew.htm.

ü Complete your online Bright Futures application in December of your Senior year in the Rotary Futures College Resource Center. Only Seniors may complete the application after December 1st. Completing the form early only causes problems in the system.

ü Remember, failure to meet ALL Bright Future requirements by graduation day, will forfeit all future eligibility for a Bright Futures Scholarship.

ü QUESTIONS? Contact the Rotary Futures College Resource Center.

Yearbook Senior Message AdsDear VHS Seniors, Parents, and Business Owners, There is no better way to show your pride in your student than by purchasing an ad in the 2017 yearbook! As in the past, the VHS Warrior Staff will be offering the chance to purchase personalized messages in our publication. Showcase your pride in your senior by sharing photos from childhood memories and high school accomplishments. Purchase one just for your senior, or share the page with their friends, teammates, fellow club members, etc. You may also want to ask a local business to sponsor the page for you. You may refer to previous years’ yearbooks for examples. Ad sizes range from a full page (8.5 x 11in) to an eighth of a page (4.25 x 2.75in). We have a new method for purchasing and designing ads. Please follow the directions below. If you’d like to create yours in hardcopy, we can still help with that. Please email us at [email protected] with any questions pertaining to ads or yearbooks!

How to Digitally Purchase an Ad

1. Visit smart-pay.com, choose your ad size, and pay online.

2. Go back to smart-pay.com using your order number and follow instructions to upload ad materials to your school’s yearbook adviser. The first photo uploaded will be the most prominent in the ad.

3. OPTION 2: Email the photo(s) to us at [email protected] and include the text that you’d like to appear. You can also make your own ad and submit it to us as a PDF using this method.

Thank you,VHS Warrior Staff
