A radially-bolted mechanical pipe connectionwhich allows quick make-up and break-out andis ideal where space, weight and joint integrityare critical requirements.

Techlok Clamp Connectors are the most effective and economical pipe connectio

system available today. Typically several Techlok joints can be installed in the time it

takes to assemble a single standard ANSI or API flange.

Conventional ANSI or API flanges with their eight to 24 bolts require accurate

alignment to ensure a seal, whereas Techlok Clamp Connectors have only four bolts,

no alignment problems and require less bolt loads.

As is well known, external bending forces are an inevitable part of any piping

system, resulting in high stresses being placed on pipe joints. Independent strain gaug

and destructive tests have shown the Techlok connector can withstand considerable

bending moments/forces and axial loading under pressure without leaking or the bolt

becoming loose, greatly reducing maintenance costs at the same time as being highly

    beneficial to the environment.

High pressure systems are not a problem, with Techlok connectors working in

applications where pressures of 30,000psi and above are found; and when it comes t

offshore applications where topside loading is critical, Techloks low weight is a real

advantage - a factor applicable in any industry where weight and overall installation co

    is a consideration.

    Corrosive applications

In more corrosive applications where the specifications demand the use of exotic

materials, the sheer size difference between conventional flanges and Techlok Clamp

Connectors (typically 75%) ensures operators and contractors a real competitive

    advantage when determining capex/opex budgets.

But its not just size and weight that makes Techlok the natural choice.

Unlike conventional ANSI flanges, Techlok Clamp Connectors are bolted radially t

the pipe, not along its axis. This means that the clamp can be orientated in any positio

around the pipe, and together with their greatly reduced size, this eliminates clearanc

problems and enables critical components like valve hand wheels to be aligned to the

optimum positions before fully tightening the clamp bolts.

    Some of the Benefits

As well as high performance, leak-free, competitive price and greater efficiency

Techlok connectors have many other advantages over conventional flanges:

Up to 75% lighter and significantly smaller than a comparable ANSI or API flange

Close piping and hook-up arrangements with typically 25% smaller clamp diameter

    Typically 40% shorter connection length

Easier fabrication and installation with no bolt holes to align

On sizes up to and including 36, only 4 bolts to tighten rather than up to 24 on a

    conventional flange

The clamp can be rotated round the hub for easy bolt orientation and tightening

Ancillary components such as valves and piping layouts can be installed withoutworrying about bolt hole alignment

Quicker and easier make-up and breakout minimises maintenance downtime

Lower bolt torque: typically 50% less than that for a ring joint flange

Sealing integrity is unaffected by over-tensioning bolts

Short make and break times - several Techlok connectors can usually be assembled

or disassembled in the time it takes for a single ANSI or API flange connection

It is not usually necessary to re-tighten bolts once in service

In most cases only one clamp size is required for each nominal pipe size

Unlike spiral-wound gaskets, reusable sealrings give greater flexibility forhydro-testing and commissioning prior to service

    Reduced inventory

Readily available machining details for interface with associated equipment such asvalves, pumps and metering equipment

Available in all materials to suit the piping specification

    Fully Assembled

    Pressure Energised Seal

    Prior to Assembly

    Self Energised Seal

    The Techlok advantage

The heart of Techloks success is the energised seal. Techlok clamp connectors do not

rely on the conventional flanges gaskets and correctly tensioned bolting to maintain the

integrity of the seal. The four bas ic elements of the Techlok clamp connector are hubs,

sealring, clamps and bolting. When bolting the assembly, the hubs are drawn together by

the twin wedge action of the two clamp segments compressing on the seal ring to make

    the first-stage self-energising seal.

The applied bolting loads are transmitted to the clamps through almost 360 contact

with the hubs. And as the bolts are transversely mounted they are almost completelyisolated from the operating loads, resulting in a strong, reliable yet compact connection.

In service the sealring becomes even more effective as internal pressure reinforces the

metal-to-metal seal to the extent that its strength can normally exceed the burst pressure of

    the connected pipe.

    Techlok Components

    Hubs

A critical feature of Techlok hubs is their conical seat which creates the

interference with the sealring lips to make the seal. Hubs are

manufactured from the same generic material as the piping

system on which they are to be utilised. They are then either

welded to the pipe or machined integrally onto associated

    equipment such as valves.

Butt weld hubs are supplied with standard ANSI B16.25

weld profiles. Blind hubs are a lso

available for blanking off a pipe

    section or for pressure

    vessel closures.

    Clamps

The two Techlok clamp segments make

virtually 360 contact round the hubs. The seal is

made when the bolts are tightened, drawing the

two clamp halves together and clamping the hubs

against the sealring. The clamp bolt holes have

spherical seats to accept the spherically faced nuts

    to ensure a perfect fit.

    Bolting

Techlok clamp connectors come complete witstandard size nuts and bolts in a variety of coating

to suit every type of piping application. Each

connector requires only four bolts (which

    encompasses a 100% safety / redundancy factor)

and the nuts are spherically-faced to eliminate

bending stresses in the bolts during assembly.

    Sealring

The key to the Techlok system is its

sealring. Techloks sealring has a central rib

section and two seal lips tapered to match the

conical seat profile of the hubs. It is these lips

    which make the pressure-energised seal.

Deformation remains essentially elastic throughout, making the

    sealring reusable.

The rib provides a positive stop during make-up, preventing the lips

from being crushed by over tightening and also transferring compressive

and bending loads from one hub to the other.

Sealrings are manufactured from high strength steel compatible with the hub

materials. Typically, precipitation-hardening stainless steels such as grades 630 or 660,

or Alloy 718 are specified for corrosion resistant applications, while low alloy steels are

used for carbon steel pipes. Coating the sealring with a lubricant such as PTFE prevents

the surfaces galling during make-up and enhances reusability.

    4

    Techlok's sealring has many advantages

    over conventional gaskets. For example:

Assured joint integrity first time every time

The gasket forces and seal diameter areminimal, meaning that the load capacity of the

    components is maximised

The proven reliability of the pressure-energisebore seal makes Techlok connectors compact

and up to 75% lighter than comparably rated

    flanges

The lack of a conventional flange gasket gives a

    gas-tight metal-to-metal seal

As is well known, external bending forces

are an inevitable part of any piping system,

resulting in high stresses being placed on pipe

    NOTES

    1. Pressure ratings are intended as a selection guide and assume the following criteria:

    a. Bore of hub is based upon the sealring bore

    b. Corrosion allowance is 0.063 for carbon/low alloy steels, zero for stainless steels.

    c. Hydrotest pressure = 1.5 x pressure rating.

    2. Pressure ratings assume AISI 4140 clamps (100 / 75 Ksi, 690/517 MPa) or equivalent.

    3. Pressure ratings are calculated on the basis of ASME VIII Div 2 methods and analysis.

    4. Pressure ratings to API criteria/materials can be undertaken on request.

    5. Combined pressure / external loads / temperature analysis can be undertaken on re

    6. Using the full rated pressure of 316 SS components may result in minor distortions

Hydrotest. If in doubt, contact Vector International for further details.

    7. 4130 Hub material assumes 90 Ksi tensile (620 MPa) and 60 Ksi yield (414 MPa).

At the heart of the Techlok connector, there's well proven

successful sealing technology - the metal-to-metal sealring

The sealring creates a leak-free connection, unlike flanges

which leak causing environmental pollution (hydrocarbon

emissions), and bring about delays in commissioning and

production, which in turn has severe cost implications.

The Vector sealring does not leak. It offers weight savings

avoids unscheduled downtime and reduces operational

    costs.

The technology behind the sealring is not limited to Vectorproducts. It can be applied to standard flanges as well as

special connections for which Vector can design dedicated

    sealing solutions.

Vector Internationals sealrings have been proven over many years of reliable use

in all conditions and in thousands of applications across a wide range of industries.

Each Vector sealring incorporates three essential principles for a high strength, high

    integrity joint:

Minimum possible seal diameter to reduce pressure separation loads

    Isolated from piping loads

Pressure energised for enhanced seal integrity

Vector sealrings are completely confined within the connection and cannot be

damaged by bending loads or by overtightening the bolts. All sealrings are available

in a wide range of standard sizes and materials, with special materials to suit special

    applications available on request.

    Standard Sealrings

The standard sealring has many advantages over conventional gaskets, such as:

Assured joint integrity first time every time

Minimal gasket forces and seal diameter, enabling the load capacity of thecomponents to be maximised

Reliable and proven pressure-energised bore seal concept, making the TechlokClamp Connector up to 75% lighter than comparably-rated flanges

    Gas-tight metal-to-metal seal

    Reusable

The sealring consists of a central rib section and two seal lips which are tapered to

match the conical seat profile of the hubs. It is these lips which provide the pressure-

energised seal with deformation remaining essentially elastic throughout, and making

    the sealring reusable.

The rib acts as a positive stop during make-up, prevents the lips from being

crushed by overtightening, and transfers compressive and bending loads from one

    hub to the other.

Coating the sealring with a lubricant such as PTFE prevents the surfaces galling

during make-up and enhances reusability. The sealring is manufactured from high strength steel compatible with the hub

materials. Typically precipitation-hardening stainless steels, such as grades 630 or 660,

or Alloy 718, are specified for corrosion resistant applications, while low alloy steels

are used for carbon steel pipelines.

    Blind Sealrings

Blind sealrings are an effective way of blanking-off pipe runs, particularly duringconstruction work-over

Designed as an auxiliary pressure isolation device and should only be used inconjunction with other isolation equipment, e.g. valves

Blinds are marked with a max working pressure. Check for the suitability for youapplication with Vector International

Smaller sizes can usually take full line pressure

    Available also with Dur-O-Seal option

Can be provided with indicator flags

Blind sealrings are not recommended for permanent installation or for cyclicloading

    Strainer Sealrings

Special Techlok Sealrings, designed and manufactured to the clients ownspecification

During start-up phases, this can be used to protect high value equipment such avalves, pumps and compressors

Can be manufactured in any traditional material associated with the Techloksealring

    Dur-O-Seal

Dur-O-Seal is an alternative sealing mechanism to the standard metal-to-metalTechlok sealring. It is used to maximum advantage where seats are badly corroded

or damaged, or in sandy conditions on service and vessel closures/pig launchers

Design ideal where repeated make-breaks are required

Dur-O-Seal is fully interchangeable with all clamp connectors

It utilises standard, easily replaceable '0' rings

Eliminates the need for costly down time for weld repair or on-site machining ofdamaged hubs

It has a zero extrusion gap which allows for high pressure capacity, and ensures noloss of performance. Note: Dur-O-Seal is not intended for permanent installations

where 'O' ring seals are not to be used due to operating conditions

    Orifice Sealrings

Used in conjunction with Techlok Orifice connectors

Can be supplied as one piece or two piece assemblies (such as replacementorifice)

Can be supplied for flow measurement or as a restriction orifice

    Sizing calculations can be supplied

Available for all sizes of Techlok sealrings

    Transition Sealrings

Designed to accommodate specification breaks of similar nominalpipe sizes i.e. 6in 46 matching to 6in 52 would utilise a transition

Test Rings (RIT)Vector has developed a means of testing a Techlok clamp connector joint in-situ

prior to, or in place of a line leak test to save time and ensure seal integrity.

There are two forms of test ring, an independent ring or an integral part of the

    sealring.

The separate Reverse Integrity Test Rings (RIT) acts as a sealing carrier which eas

the installation process of the sealring during the assembly by testing the lips of the

sealring the wrong way hence producing a very onerous test on the seal. The

    principle is illustrated below.

    Materials

The materials used for the separate RIT rings are high strength carbon steel or 6stainless.

The integral RIT sealrings will complement the base sealring material.

External pressure limits for Techlok sealrings

Tests and calculations indicate the external pressure capacity of standard Techlok

Sealrings (see Graph). The external pressure limit is dictated by the sealring geome

and is therefore independent of the line pressure.

Two types of testing are shown (i.e. the integral RIT Ring and the independent R

Ring), and the pressure limit for both are relatively constant across the sealring range

    23/34

with the integral RIT Ring having the higher pressure capacity. Consequently a single

test pressure can be used for either type (see Table).

The test is carried out over a 15 minute period. This allows for any settlement of

oil and trapped air in the system. The small test volume means that even the smallest

leak will result in a pressure loss, ensuring a high integrity test.

The RIT test may also be used for gas testing.

    Assemblyand disassembly procedure

    AssemblyInspect components prior to assembly

Hub and sealring seating surfaces must be

clean and free from foreign matter. Damage to hub seats

and seal lips is not acceptable, and should be rectified

    before assembly.

    Lubricate

Usually sealrings are coated which acts as lubricant

during make-up. If required light oil or MoS2 spray can be

used on hub sealing surface but not on sealring. Take care

that no solid particles are present in the lubricant.

    Check sealring stand-off

The sealring should rock slightly against hub face.

Stand-off dimensions given below in inches.

    Assemble components

Install sealring into the hubs, and assemble clamps

around the hubs. Lubricant applied to the hub/clamp

contact area will aid assembly. The studbolts should be

fitted ensuring that spherically faced nuts locate into

spherical seats of the clamps. Lubrication of nut faces and

    bolt threads is recommended.

    Tighten bolts in uniform manner

Bolting should be tightened to keep spacing between

clamp halves approximately equal. Clamp segments should

be shocked with suitable soft-faced hammer to

aid assembly. Always re-tighten bolts after shocking to the

torque/preload values given on facing page.

    Align hubs

Hubs should be aligned so that sealring can be installed

between hubs. DO NOTattempt to correct badly mis-

aligned piping by clamping force alone; piping pulling forces

should only be released when clamp is fully assembled.

Complete Techlok make up requires two conditions.

    1) Hubs must be completely face to face with the rib of

the sealring where standard hubs are used and

completely face to face with each other where recessed

    hubs are used.

    2) Bolts are made up to the correct torque.

    DisassemblyDe-pressurise the line

Always check, never take it for granted that the line has

been de-pressurised. Proceed with caution in case seepage

has caused pressure to build up again.

Slacken nuts but do not remove the nuts from the

bolts - then slacken clamp segments

Gradually run the nuts back along the bolts until just

loose. If clamp segments remain bound onto hubs, then

BOTH segments must be slackened by hitting the inner face

of the clamp lugs with a suitable soft-faced hammer.

    Repeat slackening procedure

Re-loosen nuts and re-slacken BOTH clamp

segments until the maximum nut travel shown below

is reached. This should release sealring contact and

any residual pressure will then be released through,

    with the joint.

Check clamps are slack and free to rotate

    and rock about hubs

Do not proceed until discharge ceases ensure that

hubs are apart, sealring is free to move AND clamps

are slack, free to rotate or rock.

NOTE - If pressure is still in the line, the sealring

might remain seated, making the join`t tight even

though it is part dis-assembled. ONLY when allcomponents are loose and clamps are free to move can

dis-assembly be completed. If the components are not

free to move DO NOT CONTINUE - contact your

    supervisor.

Always ask yourself - what if ?

What if, the connection is still under pressure, am I or

others in danger, and if so how?

What if, there is still gas or fluid in the line?

    What if, the sling snaps?

What if, the load swings in my direction?

What if, the piping springs upon release? (Piping spring may

also prevent free rotation of clamps around the hubs).

Notes:1. This is the basic minimum torque/preload value. Use for typically 900lb systems and below, blind closures and Stainless Steel clamps.2. Different friction coefficients will require the torque values to be adjusted. Check with Lubricant manufacturer.3. Exceeding the stated torque/preload values may cause distortions in the Clamp/Hub. If these torques do not achieve correct make-up (i.e. unable to correct mis-alignment),

then seek assistance as other measures may be needed to assist with the assembly.4. Factor torque by 1.5 for mis-aligned piping and/or 1500lb systems and above. Suitable only for Carbon, Duplex and Low Alloy Steel Clamps with B7 or equivalent bolts.5. Factor torque by 2.0 for extreme mis-aligned piping and/or 2500lb (and 5000psi) systems and above. Training Services

We can offer comprehensive training courses for a ll relevant personnel at site pr

to their commencing work on the installation/assembly of any Vector product.

Satisfactory completion of the course leads to the award of a competency

    certificate.

    Site Services

Our Product Support Engineers are available on site at a time when your sitecrews are ready to assemble and install piping runs. These engineers will assist in t

identification and repair of potential issues which may ultimately lead to a possible le

    at Hydro-test.

Remember prevention involves less cost than repairs, especially offsho

    Leak Reduction Initiative

We offer and provide a full and comprehensive on site service which delivers all

the benefits associated with both initiatives indicated above, and much more

Our leak reduction initiative is designed to save you significant time and money

including minimising expensive offshore rework and potential lost production days.

The overall benefits of our leak reduction initiative more than justify the costs.

Vector International supply far more than just piping

products. In recent years we have become well known for

our Product Support Services and our support for your

project, no matter how large or small, never ends. Our

intention is for you to have a very successful experience

working with us and our products.

These services are charged to you but in the medium term

will save you time, effort and money and will also prevent

frustrations at installation for you and your staff.

It is a well known statistic that a number of mechanical

joints, e.g. flanges, may show signs of leakage at start up

(Hydro-test). With the input of our Product Support

Teams, this risk can be eliminated.
