Below you will find 5 subject activities. We would suggest you choose one of the activities each afternoon.

RE – How do different cultures and religions express their ideas about rites of passage?

The Hajj

Have you ever been on a special journey – eg to see relatives far away? Every Muslim aims to visit Mecca

There are many rituals which Muslims undertake on their visit. Hajj is very important – many Muslims feel

Write a postcard as if you are on Hajj. On the reverse draw a picture of a mosque or the kaba but of course

no people or animals –this is forbidden in Islam. Try to express in writing how joyful or changed a Muslim

might feel after going on Hajj.

Science – The gestation period for animals

Gestation is the prenatal stage or the time between fertilisation and birth. You will be finding out and

reporting about the different gestation periods of different types of animals.

Have a look at the Classification of Animal Types Poster. Which types of animals do you think will have the

longest gestation periods? Which will have the shortest? Can you explain your answer?

Comparing Gestation Periods: Use the Comparing Gestation Periods Activity Sheet to make your predictions

Once you have done so, use the Animal Gestation Periods Table to research the gestation periods of

the types of animals you are investigating.

History – Lord Shaftesbury

Read the information about Lord Shaftesbury and the Factory Act from last week. In those times

children had no say in how things were, and many adults thought that child labour was a good thing.

It was up to a small number of voices to bring change into effect and Lord Shaftesbury was instrumental in using his position of power to improve the lives of others.

taken from an inspector’s report after visiting different factories to look at their working conditions

for children. Even after the Act was passed, it took a long time for change to really happen. Lord

Shaftesbury spent his life tirelessly campaigning for different changes to occur that would make life

better for working class children

Choose one of the following areas that Lord Shaftesbury campaigned to improve for children:

Working conditions in factories

Children working in underground mines

Employment of child chimney sweeps

Education for poor children

Write a persuasive letter from Lord Shaftesbury to the government, proposing changes to the law in

your chosen area.

Remember to….

Use persuasive language

Describe what current conditions are like for children and why this is not good for them

Suggest a sensible alternative about what should happen instead.

Computing – Exploring spreadsheets using Excel (it would be helpful if a grownup can show you

this programme on the computer before you try the activity on your own) This week we are going to look at the main elements of a spreadsheet.

Here are some things you need to know first;

Cells (highlighted in yellow) - the name of the cell is B3, can you identify other cell names

Column (highlighted in blue) - we can change the width of a column by moving the cursor between each

column and left click hold and drag.

Row – each row is numbered - we can change the height of a row by moving the cursor between the line

between numbers and left click hold and drag.

We can select more than one row or column and change the size of all the selected.

We can select all the spreadsheet by using the far left corner.

Activity – you will need to download the spreadsheet from Purple Mash called ‘spreadsort’

There are several spreadsheets which have got all muddled up. You can select each one by using the tabs at

the bottom. The rows and columns are all different sizes and they are in a right mess. Can you un-muddle

them and tidy them up? You can create your own information to fill in any empty cells. Just have a play

around with it.

PSHE - Taking care of myself: getting a good night’s sleep

Use these posters to help you to answer the questions on the worksheet (My Sleep Fact file)

Could you now tell someone at home the 3 facts you think are most important?

Daily Activities

PE – Roll a dice to decide on the animal you will move like. Roll a second dice to determine how long to do

the movement for. Keep playing until you have completed all 6 numbers.

1= Hop like a Bunny; 2= Run like a cheetah; 3= Gallop like a horse; 4= Walk like a crab

5= Slither like a snake; 6= Walk like a Bear

Time how long does it take you to collect all 6 numbers; record the score

CAN YOU THINK OF ANY MORE ANIMALS TO COPY.CAN YOU PLAY THE SAME GAME WITH

MORE DICE AND CHANGE THE RULES?

Mindfulness Break – Starfish Breaths Sit on the floor with your legs comfortably crossed in front of you. Open

your left hand and extend it slightly in front of you so it looks like an

open starfish. Take your right hand and extend your pointer finger.

Beginning with your left thumb, take your right pointer finger and go up

the outside thumb while taking a deep breath in. Go down the inside of

the thumb and breathe out deeply. Continue the deep breathing in while

going up each finger and exhaling when going down each finger. Once you

are finished, switch hands

and repeat.
