Valentine’s Day A: Valentine’s Day is coming soon. Are you excited? B: No, not really. I’m not a big fan of it. A: Really? But it’s so much fun. Why don’t you like it? B: I always have to buy chocolate for everyone I work with. And my boss gets upset if he doesn’t get any. A: What? I’ve never heard anything like that. B: Yeah, it’s a modern Japanese tradition. It’s obligatory. A: Well that’s no fun. B: I know. What about you? A: I’m so excited. I’m going to take my girlfriend out for dinner and I already got her a really nice necklace. B: Wow! That sounds serious. Are you going to propose? A: No way! I think it’s pretty normal for most Canadians though. We always do that in North America. B: Wow. She’s so lucky. A: I’m so excited for Valentine’s Day. B: Yeah? What are you planning to do for it? A: I haven’t decided yet. But my boyfriend is planning to do something special. B: That’s sweet. What did he do last year? A: Actually we just met a few months ago. It’s our first Valentine’s Day together so he has to do something nice. B: Oh, I see. I don’t have plans this year. A: Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot. You and your girlfriend broke up on your anniversary, right? B: Yeah. I was heartbroken at first but I got over it. A: Aww. That’s good. Well, I hope you meet someone nice. B: Yeah, I tried some apps but I haven’t found anyone yet. A: I’m sure you’ll find someone soon. B: Thanks. It is obligatory to buy chocolate for my boss. I have to do something for my coworkers. I was heartbroken but I got over it. upset I’m ok now. Are you going to propose to her? ask her to marry you?

Valentine’s Day Saint Valentine's Day (commonly shortened to Valentine's Day) is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrsnamed Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 500 AD. It was deleted from the Roman calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI, but its religious observance is still permitted. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

Using the worksheetThe first page is the best and has two intermediate conversations about Valentine’s Day. The second is easier and tuned to lower level students. The language is mostly easy but there are a few good vocabulary words in there. The pattern in the center of the page practices rewording a couple of those terms on the first page and a simple grammar pattern on the second. 1. Give students the topic of places for dates. Not dates themselves, but good places for dates. That eliminates the need to talk about specific things in their personal lives. They are free to talk about dating or their personal lives if they want to but the teacher shouldn’t push for that. Also use common sense. This is clearly not a topic for kids. Use it with discretion. 2. Use one of the conversations as listening practice. If time allows, review the vocabulary and rewording or read the conversation for pronunciation practice. 3. Start a new conversation about Valentine’s Day.The third page is a much older sheet I made some time ago that my students requested. At the time I was previewing what upcoming topics we might talk about and they said they didn’t really know much about Valentine’s Day. I’m not actually a fan of the third page. Take some of the content or questions from the sheet to drive the conversation in new directions but DON’T rely on it too heavily. Spot a typo? Like what you see?
