conjunction with Dungarvan Chamber, and demonstrated how our local community can gain a financial

reward by simply introducing their friends abroad to Connect Ireland.

The whole process of this new scheme is very simple. You just inform Connect Ireland of your overseas

contacts who can make an introduction in an expanding business abroad. Connect Ireland will work with

that company to help it locate to Ireland. If this is successful and jobs are created, you will receive a

Waterford WEN’s Tax Bootcamp!!

Waterford WEN had its first Autumn meeting on 24th Sept at DEC. As the age-old expression goes,

there's nothing more certain than death and taxes! So we decided to start the season with a tax

bootcamp for our members as we're at that time of year when everyone in business has to file their

return. Guest speakers were Marie Doody of Tax Assist and Barry Walsh of Barry Walsh Financial. The

focus of the event was Tax and Pensions. The event focused on practical tips for reducing your tax bill

and ways of maximising your pension contributions, while reducing your tax liability. Everyone had the

opportunity to have their individual questions answered at the event and members were able to walk

away better armed to deal with the Revenue.

WEN's next event is a Speed Networking event in association with Dungarvan Chamber, this will take

place on Thursday, 4th Oct at Dungarvan Enterprise Centre:

‘Necessity’ Women in Business Being Targeted for Local Supports

Women from Waterford who set up a business “out of necessity” are among those being targeted for

supports by the organisers of this year’s National Women’s Enterprise Day on October 18th.

Since 2007, there has been a dramatic increase in the numbers of women and men who have set up

their own businesses “out of necessity”, up from 6% of early stage entrepreneurs five years ago, to 33%

last year (Source: GEM).*

The Waterford County Enterprise Board is helping to organise a major two day conference, exhibition

and mentoring clinic on October 17th and 18th to mark National Women’s Enterprise Day, and are

encouraging all female entrepreneurs to avail of the business supports on offer.

Anike Tyrrell from Waterford County Enterprise Board feels that women who have to set up a business

‘out of necessity’ have a lot to gain by seeking advice and supports. She said: “Entrepreneurs might still

need to look for new business ideas, especially if they haven’t set up a business in response to an

identified business opportunity.”

Page 10: V4 September

ENTERPRISE NEWS SEPTEMBER 2012

She continued: “Through National Women’s Enterprise Day,

entrepreneurs can access experienced business mentors for one-to-one

confidential appointments, they can speak to various support and state

agencies at the enterprise exhibition and they can meet like-minded

entrepreneurs at the facilitated networking events. In addition, they can

hear the stories and real-life experiences of fifteen different women in

business, who have achieved success in their chosen fields.”

Clinical Psychologist and Author, Dr. Maureen Gaffney is one of two

keynote speakers at the National Conference on October 18th, alongside

Mary McKenna from Tour America, with Tv3’s Collette Fitzpatrick taking

on the role of conference facilitator.

All the events during the two day conference for National Women’s Enterprise Day, which is part of EU

SME Week 2012, are taking place at the Heritage Hotel in Portlaoise. Booking forms can be downloaded

from www.nwed.ie and the subsidised delegate fees are €100, which includes conference materials,

meals and mentoring appointments on October 17th and 18th.

Great Turnout for Tax Assist Accountants Seminar

The free start-up seminar for business start-ups with Marie Doody of Tax Assist Accountants, which took

place on Tuesday, the 18th September, was very well attended. The event, hosted by Dungarvan

Enterprise Centre, gave an overview of all the important considerations to be taken for new business.

Lots of people are starting businesses at the moment but all too many don't know what their rights and

entitlements are. Unfortunately, there is nobody standing on street corners handing out information on

the basic questions EVERY business start up should know. This seminar answered all your questions

about tax, accounting, etc in simple English.

The seminar covered:

1. Deciding on the correct legal structure

Page 11: V4 September

ENTERPRISE NEWS SEPTEMBER 2012

2. Operating as a sole trader, partnership or limited company, what are the options?

3. Income Tax Registration, what you need to know

4. VAT Registration, what you need to know

5. What are the allowable business expenses

6. What records do I need to keep

7. Keeping on top of book keeping
