MOST IMPROVED

Daniel HoopesUtah ASDA Chapter President

2015 was a year of exciting firsts for Utah ASDA! Since its inception in November 2013, the chapter has made great strides to becoming the unified voice of the dental students at the University of Utah. 2014 was a year of laying the chapter foundation and leadership training. This year has proven to be a year of exciting growth and improvement, with markedly increased member participation, and an explosion of new ideas and opportunities for future growth! It is simply not possible to enumerate this year’s achievements on one page, so here are the highlights:

Utah ASDA successfully collaborated with and became integrated into student

government at the School of Dentistry. In April 2015, the student governance structure at the School of Dentistry was undergoing some reorganization, and a Student Advisory Committee – the school’s governing student body – was being established. The ASDA chapter leaders saw this as an opportunity to solidify ASDA’s presence and influence at the school level. With the support of the school’s administration, ASDA was granted two seats on the Student Advisory Committee. Utah ASDA was also given the opportunity to define its roles in the student handbook. As a result of this, all student activities in the following areas are overseen by ASDA: Community Outreach, Pre-Dental Involvement, Vendor Relations and Lunch & Learns, Social Activities, Legislative and Organized Dentistry, Newsletter, and any additional assign-ments from the Student Advisory Committee.

The chapter budget grew by 5,000% over the past year. In 2014, the budget was less than $200 – with the administration supporting some student travel. By July of 2015, the budget was more than $10,000. After District 10 Conference in February and Annual Session in March, ASDA members at our school saw the need for a much larger budget and decided to host Utah ASDA’s first annual Pre-Dental Simulation Day in May. The 40 spots for the event sold out quick-ly, and the day was a smashing success with participation from school administration (including the Dean of Admissions), staff, ASDA members, and of course, the pre-dental attendees. Due to the success of this event, an equally successful additional Pre-Dental Day was held in July. Take a look at the pages near the end of this application for a more detailed picture of this amazing event!

The Utah ASDA Executive Council created a defined Travel Stipend Program. With more money and more participation came the need for greater organization. A three-tiered program was created with first-tier students paying 15% of total travel costs, second tier paying 25%, and third tier paying 40%. The remainder of the cost is paid by a combination of Utah ASDA, school administration, and ASUU (the student body government at the University of Utah). The Travel Stipend Application has criteria including national ASDA publications, attendance at past chapter events, and reasons for wanting to attend. Thanks to this program and support from the administration, Utah ASDA was able to send 24 students to either a

district or national conference in 2015 – that’s a full one third of the entire student

body!

Among the additional firsts for our chapter this year were the elections for committee leads in September, the ADPAC Drive in October, the Mentoring Dinner for incoming D1’s in August, and having a Utah ASDA member elected to the District 10 Cabinet in March. Please enjoy perusing our other achievements throughout this application! We are truly proud of the chapter we have created with the help of our amazing members and cooperation from the administra-tion. Thank you for your consideration!
