New Volunteer Website Con-nects Over 400 Volunteers to Help Those Who Need it MostUnited Way of Southern Nevada is proud to announce the launch of Volunteer Connect, its new volunteer website at volunteer.uwsn.org. The volunteer platform has already engaged hundreds of volunteers to assist with vital ser-vices for those who are most deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The need for help is huge and growing by the day. We are recruiting volunteers who are helping our most vulnerable get through these difficult times,” said Kyle B. Rahn, United Way of Southern Nevada President and CEO. “As local nonprofits cope with the loss of resources and fund-ing, volunteers play a vital and important

role in helping these services continue.”With a simple and easy signup process,

there are currently 50 nonprofit organiza-tions registered on Volunteer Connect. In addition to virtual volunteer oppor-tunities, volunteers can deliver food and organize supply donation opportunities.

“Many of our partners are in desperate need of paper goods, personal protec-tive equipment, shelf-stable foods, and diapers,” said Savanna Sibley, United Way of Southern Nevada Volunteer Man-ager. “Without the help of volunteers, many people in our community who are just in need of a volunteer voice on the other end of the phone would go without food and essential supplies.”

Since the launch of this platform, UWSN has deployed over 400 volunteers across the valley to complete projects such as meal, grocery, and supply delivery to seniors and telephone screening of patients of the COVID-19 Patient Support Center.

UWSN invites volunteers to get involved and make a difference, and asks Southern Nevada nonprofits to sign up today at vol-unteer.uwsn.org. To ensure that UWSN can continue to provide critical support, give

today at uwsn.org/donate. For more infor-mation, please email [email protected] United Way of Southern Nevada

United Way of Southern Nevada unites our community to improve people’s lives. We bring donors, volunteers, nonprofits, and businesses together to help children enter school ready to learn, help high school students reach graduation day, and support individuals working to earn a degree or certification, all while creat-ing stability for their families. Together, we step into the ring and invite others to stand with us as a united front against social injustices and forces keeping our com-munity’s most vulnerable residents from a good life. We are bold and innovative to solve our toughest problems. Together, we fight for the future of our community

– and we will win. Join us at uwsn.org.About the UWSN Emergency Assistance and Community Needs Fund (UWSN Fund)

With over 30 years of experience in distributing emergency funding, help will be available through United Way of Southern Nevada’s trusted partners who are experienced in providing direct service assistance. To ensure accountability of the distribution of funds, UWSN is following the same stringent guidelines it utilizes for the administration of Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funds through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). To ensure all donated funds are distributed to needs resulting from the COVID-19 virus and this state of emer-gency, Bank of America is covering all of their administrative fees and underwrit-ing expenses related to the Emergency Assistance and Community Needs Fund account so that 100% of the donations go to local needs. Also supported by NV Energy and the Wells Fargo Foundation, United Way of Southern Nevada launched the UWSN Fund to assist those impacted by COVID-19. To donate, visit uwsn.org/donate or text “UWSNFUND” to 313131.

ADVANCED PROCEDURES & EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS

At the Neuropathy & Pain Centers of Las Vegas, we feature many services not offered elsewhere. By emphasizing energy medicine, we focus on healing. For acute temporary needs, we provide medications when necessary, but we do not throw medications at patients. We investigate the root cause of our patients’ pain using state of the art technologies.

We specialize in difficult pain states like neuropathic pain, which occurs when normal signaling between nerve cells is disrupted, and nerve function becomes the problem. Neuropathy affects over 8% of the population and is caused by diabetes (30%), toxins such as chemotherapy (40%) and no known cause (30%). Our technol-ogy improves patients with shingles and motor nerve dysfunction including muscle weakness and drop foot. We also improve or eliminate nerve entrapments symp-toms such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

We accomplish this with advanced electromedical devices (manufactured by Sanexas GMbh in Germany), like no other cell signal generators in the world. Our clinic was the first to utilize Sanexas in Las Vegas, and remain the leading provider for Sanexas therapy in the Valley. Healing of nerve and muscle cells is accomplished through complex electronic cell signaling technology (EST), whose mechanisms include increases in blood flow and anti-inflammatory effects.

Since we treat chronic conditions, patients must attend the clinic 2-3 times/week for up to several months; this protocol is necessary because we are striving to heal the source of the chronic pain, not just papering over symptoms over medications.

We offer traditional interventional pain management including minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat neck and

low back pain with or without radiation, sacroiliac joint pain, and post-surgical neck or back pain from laminectomies or fusions. Our novel approaches treat all types of headaches, (migraine or tension) using the sphenopalatine block and Sanexas elec-troanalgesia. Thoracic (mid-back) pain is underdiagnosed and untreated; our superior radiofrequency ablation (RFA) techniques effectively treat pain in these locations.

Aging causes joint pain from the knee, shoulder, hip, elbows, and thumb to

become more common. Our advanced techniques range from intra-articular steroids to viscosupplementation to RFA of the capsular nerves of the hip and knee joints. We utilize non-invasive Sanexas electroanalgesia because of its profound anti-inflammatory effects for tendonitis, bursitis, post trauma and post-surgery acute pain, edema (swelling), arthritis,

vascular and circulation conditions.Myofascial pain syndromes (e.g. trigger

points, myalgias) are especially rewarding to treat. We also specialize in treating foot pain including plantar fasciitis, and work closely with podiatrists for more complex foot pain.

Finally, we have found success with many neurological problems which defy conventional treatment, such as restless leg syndrome, allodynia (excessive sensi-tive/discomfort due to touch), wound healing and post stroke syndrome.

Governor Sisolak recently amended his “Stay at Home” order to the State “Relax-ing restrictions on outdoor activities including golf, pickleball, and tennis, long as they do it safely and in a way that prevents the spread of COVID-19.”Tennis is among the few recreational activities that community members will be allowed to begin effective Friday, May 1st, according to Governor Sisolak’s recently amended “Stay at Home” order. “Relaxing restrictions on outdoor activi-ties including golf, pickleball, and tennis, long as they do it safely and in a way that prevents the spread of COVID-19." To sup-port those who lost their jobs or are low on funds, the United States Tennis Associ-ation in Nevada is doing a “FREE TENNIS” campaign on their Facebook page to make free play available to the community.

The United States Tennis Association in Nevada has coordinated with tennis professionals and medical experts in the community to put together a group of Best Practices & Guidelines, augmented by the USTA National Task Force guidelines, to ensure that people’s recreational tennis play is done in a safe manner. These guidelines have been distributed to all tennis facili-ties in Southern Nevada and to the local teaching professionals, and can be found on our USTA Nevada Facebook page.

“We are extremely grateful to the Governor for considering tennis a social distancing sport that can be played safely under the guidelines we came up with, and I am extremely proud of our partner-ship with UMC CEO Mason Van Houweling , our board President Dr Daulat, and the collection of thirty five tennis leaders with USTA, USPTA and PTR, that worked together the last month to put these guidelines together,” said USTA - Nevada Director Ryan Wolfington. “Our sport and coaches are inspired by the opportunity to be a part of the solution, getting people fresh air, UV light, and the exercise to stimulate their immune systems and mental health.”

The USTA Nevada has a link on their Facebook page with details on how to take part in the cities FREE TENNIS campaign, to get people of all ages playing tennis in a safe way.About United States Tennis Association - Nevada

As part of the national USTA which owns the US OPEN, USTA Nevada invests 100% of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grassroots to the professional levels. The association was created to promote the sport in Nevada and to support the growth of tennis in the United States.

The USTA-Nevada helps run hundreds of tournaments, leagues, events, clinics and classes to help our citizens stay active, to boost their immune systems, and to stay physically, emotionally and mentally healthy. USTA Nevada has leagues in most places for adults skill levels between begin-ner and pro. The USTA-Nevada is also a proud sponsor and partner with three pro-fessional tournaments in Las Vegas and the WTT Vegas Rollers Professional tennis team.

The United States Tennis Association in Nevada is committed to the promotion, growth and development of tennis as an enjoyable, lifetime sport that contributes to

good health, character, and responsible citi-zenship. The USTA-Nevada Tennis Associa-tion encourages all people who play, watch, support, or enjoy the game of tennis to par-ticipate in its events, programs, member-ship, leadership, and activities on a non-dis-criminatory basis. To that end, the Nevada Tennis Association and our community partners, have established our FREE TENNIS campaign which offers a free tennis experi-ence to anyone ages 3 and up. For more information on this program, click here.

As a small non-profit organization with few revenue streams we are looking for cor-porate, foundation and individual sponsors. Donations of any size can make a difference for these pros. We, as a staff, have decided to match any donation to this fund with our own personal money, up to $10,000.

More Than 20 Pounds of Organically Grown Vegetables from the Campus Community Garden Donated to Local Food Bank and More Than 1,700 Viral Transport Mediums Donated to South-ern Nevada Public Health Lab

To help the Southern Nevada commu-nity during the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty members at Nevada State Col-lege have teamed together to donate needed items to several organizations including 3D printed face masks, per-sonal protective equipment (PPE), viral transport mediums and fresh veg-etables grown at the campus garden.

The Mathematics Department at Nevada State College is supporting the Vegas Fighting COVID group by printing 3D face masks to help the healthcare work-ers in hospitals and facilities across the valley. Faculty members completed their first donation of 3D printed face masks on April 20 which included more than 67 face masks, 16 lower mask support pieces, and 9 tension relievers. Faculty members are printing an average of 12 face shields and 12 lower mask support pieces a day.

The Physical and Life Sciences depart-ment and its facilities management team gathered more than 30,000 pairs of gloves and more than 800 surgical masks from its personal PPE inventory to donate to Sunrise Health System’s hospitals which include Sunrise Hospital, Mountain View Hospital and Southern Hills Hospital.

The department also teamed up with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, College of Southern Nevada and Touro University to help the Southern Nevada Health District address the impact of COVID-19 by produc-ing and donating more than 1,700 viral transport mediums (VTM) to the Southern Nevada Public Health Lab (SNPHL). The VTMs made in the Nevada State College lab is an important component of the COVID-19 collection kit as it is used to preserve specimens collected from patients. The Physical and Life Sciences department fac-ulty’s production and donation of VTMs is particularly important for SNPHL’s person-nel as it allows them to focus on testing.

In addition, more than 35 pounds of vegetables grown at Nevada State Col-lege’s campus garden, which is usually used

for the campus café, have been donated to the Emergency Aid of Boulder City. Wendy Wilson who tends to the garden will continue to donate vegetables every Friday to food pantries and aid services that can take and store fresh produce.

The Nevada State College community will continue its efforts to provide needed sup-plies to various organizations. Nevada State

College appreciates all of the first respond-ers, medical professionals and community leaders who are working tirelessly through-out the pandemic to ensure the safety and health of our Southern Nevada community.About Nevada State College

Results Determined in Minutes and Validated with U.S. LaboratoriesAvidium Labs, in partnership with NXT Group, have introduced a rapid IgG/IgM antibody test kit for SARS-CoV-2 also known as COVID-19. The test kit has been validated at company’s international partner facility and with U.S.-based laboratories in New York and California.

Evan Louie, Chief Executive Officer of Avidium Labs, stated, “We are excited to announce the news to the American public and the world. We have taken additional measures to further validate our results in CLIA-certified and full laboratories within the U.S. Our team is diligently working on getting our tests to a wide range of healthcare providers such as physician offices, hospitals, and government agen-cies for rapid results. Avidium labs has already started shipping tens of thousands of their IgG/IgM kits in the U.S. We have the capacity to manufacture more than 150,000 of our kits per week and have started receiving orders for shipment.”

Avidium Labs has partnered with SUNY Downstate Health Science University - Uni-versity Hospital of Brooklyn in collaboration with Mirimus laboratory. The validation was performed on moderate to severe hospital-ized patients. The research team is under the directorship of Dr. Prem Premsrirut and includes Dr. Rachelle Mendoza, Dr. Allen Norin, and Dr. Jenny Libien working with the company’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Brian Thomas Le. The test kit utilizes a small blood sample that can instantaneously produce results in less than 10 minutes.

SUNY Downstate in New York is cur-rently recognized in the national media as a COVID-19 only facility and has the highest rate of infection per zip code in the U.S. New York is the global epicen-ter of the coronavirus outbreak with more than 200,000 confirmed cases and over 12,000 deaths. Avidium Lab’s results verified by the laboratories dem-onstrate a high efficacy in detecting IgG/IgM antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in serum, plasma, or whole blood samples.

Avidium Labs and NXT Group IgG/IgM test kits are a serology test that can identify the antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the patient’s blood. This can help to understand if one has ever been exposed

to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If implemented on a large scale, this serology test would give us a better understanding of the prevalence and fatality rate of the disease.

The serology test can identify people whose bodies have some degree of immune response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It can potentially be used to track immunity to SARS-CoV-2. It demonstrates a high efficacy in detecting antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.

Avidium Labs’ international partners conducted a comparative study of the rapid IgG/IgM antibody test kit for SARS-CoV-2 against other commercially available SARS-CoV-2 IgG/IgM detection test kits that show a positive coincidence rate of 97.92% and a negative coincidence rate of 100%.

NXT Group in its partnership with Avidium Labs has already submit-

ted an application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for both notification and on the Emer-gency Use Authorization (EUA) track.

Disclaimers: This test has not been finally reviewed by the FDA. Negative results do not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly in those who have been in contact with the virus. Follow-up testing with a molecular diagnostic should be considered to rule out infec-tion in these individuals. Results from antibody testing should not be used as the sole basis to diagnose or exclude SARS-CoV-2 infection or to inform infection status. Positive results may be due to past or present infection with non-SARS-CoV-2 coronavi-rus strains, such as coronavirus HKU1, NL63, OC43, or 229E. Not for the screening of donated blood.

By Demetria R. Giles The school year will be over before you know it! Thousands of parents across the Las Vegas valley, including yourself, are trying to figure out what to do with the kids while they are out of school for the summer. If you have already looked into educational yet fun options, you may have noticed that many summer camps offer mixed-aged programming. This concept might be new to some. However, the benefits of mixed-aged classrooms are numerous. Here are a few advantages of having your child learn with younger and older peers:

Students are not labeled accord-ing to their grade-level; children learn at their own rate which could be below, at or above their grade-level.

Students have more time to master content with the removal of grade-level or age labels; vice versa students who are ready to move on to advanced content can do so without waiting to be pro-

moted to the next grade level or class. Older students have the opportunity to

serve as mentors and practice leadership skills with younger students. Older students serve as models of sophisticated problem-

solving skills in social-emotional and academic situations for younger students.

Students are more likely to cooper-ate than compete in multi-aged set-tings. Students are viewed as unique individuals; teachers focus on cultivat-ing lessons at each child’s ability level.

Mixed-aged classrooms are representa-tive of the real-world; to become college and career ready students will need to gain the confidence to interact in social and professional situations with peers of

varying ages, experiences and skillsets. If you are interested in a mixed-aged

educational setting, join us this summer at 9th Bridge School for a fun and educational camp focused on Design, Engineering, and

Science. Campers will experience field trips, guest visits, movies, cooking classes, and on-site workshops. Feel free to learn more about 9th Bridge School’s STEAM Summer Camp by visiting www.9thbridgeschool.org or emailing to [email protected]. The summer program runs from June 1 to July 24th and is open to children ages 2-11. 9th Bridge School is an early childhood and elementary school located in Down-town Las Vegas and is currently enrolling from 12 months old to 5th grade.

Henderson International School is encouraging a healthy balance of screen time coursework throughout the duration of distance learning to promote overall student development, including Physi-cal Education and Art wherein students can watch a pre-recorded video or live classroom, but complete the exercises or art projects away from the screen.

Following an analysis of remote curricula implemented in schools that closed first, teachers and administrators at Henderson International School developed a remote learning model that encourages a well-rounded approach to distance learning that allows for on and off-screen times.

The newly adapted distance learning model continues regular academic pro-grams, but also extends a critical sense of community and stability for students and teachers. The live classroom sessions are carried out through video conferenc-ing and feature different looks tailored to meet the needs of the respective grade levels including the early childhood program for two, three and four-year-old students. Time is also set aside for stu-dents to participate in physical and art activities away from their computer.

To further promote healthy student development during distance learn-ing, Henderson International School also

found that slowing down the pace of the curriculum might prove beneficial for students. By offering more time to discuss and complete assignments as well as longer screen time breaks, stu-dents may be better poised for success.

School activities are also being modified to maintain routine and community for the benefit of education and personal relation-ships. Henderson International School is developing virtual presentations for events

such as the Living History Museum where students dress as famous historical leaders to present to parents along with the rest of the student body. Additionally, administra-tors are looking to establish virtual field trips as a substitute for canceled trips.

Henderson International School has seen consistent attendance from all their students amid a new distance learn-ing structure. However, if students are unable to participate in online learning, teachers can reach out to each stu-dent to offer educational assistance.About Henderson International School

By Katrina BrandhagenOwner/Director of All Star Swim AcademyIn the wake of Coronavirus, parents everywhere are thinking about the health and safety of their children and their families. It may feel strange as our country tries to resume life as usual after handling such unprecedented events. One way for parents to gain some peace of mind is to ensure that their child is constantly building a strong immune system and engaging in activi-ties that will promote his or her health and well-being. Swimming and Aquatic Sports have many of those benefits that children need in these uncertain times.1. Improved Respiratory Func-tion and Lung Function

Studies have shown that competitive swimmers have greater lung function and lung capacity than runners and many other athletes. The aerobic component of swimming improves the efficiency of the lungs, ensuring that muscles are constantly receiving adequate oxygen while the body expends less energy. The breath-control exercises that swim-

mers regularly engage in also lead to an increase in the number of alveoli found in the lungs, giving swimmers a stronger chance in fighting off respiratory illnesses. 2. Improved Heart Function

Swimming is also good for the heart. By training the heart and the lungs to work together more efficiently, the body is able to maintain a lower resting heart rate and ensure that the heart does not have to work as hard to deliver blood and oxygen to the body. Swimming also lowers blood pressure, helps to prevent heart

disease, and lowers the risk of a stroke.3. Muscle Health

Swimming is a great way to build long, lean muscles. It is easy on the joints and simultaneously allows children and individuals of all ages to improve bal-ance, coordination, flexibility, and posture. Swimming works a wide range of muscle groups allowing an athlete to get a com-prehensive workout just by performing the four competitive swimming strokes.

As parents return to their daily lives after facing such difficulties these past couple of months, and as they try to resume some semblance of normalcy, it would be wise to implement healthy habits and practices into their family’s routine that will promote children’s health and wellness. Swimming and Aquatic Sports can meet that need and can certainly give children the improved health that they need in the world today.Katrina Brandhagen is the Owner/Direc-tor of All Star Swim Academy in Hen-derson, NV. Over $3 Million Needed to Meet Growing Needs Related to the COVID-19 PandemicThroughout the COVID-19 pandemic, United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) has stood at the center of the commu-nity to help Southern Nevada. UWSN is proud to announce the first round of funding to 13 nonprofits that will provide food, housing and utility assis-tance to families and individuals.

"This funding is going directly out to the community with no administra-tive fee to help meet the huge need that grows daily," said Kyle B. Rahn, President & CEO United Way of Southern Nevada. "The need is growing by the day, as of today we need over $3 million more to help families and individuals survive during these very challenging times."

50 organizations requested over $5 million in funding from the Emergency Assistance and Community Needs Fund. With nearly $2 million currently in the fund, UWSN needs the community's support to help raise $3 million more to provide immediate needs assistance. UWSN is encouraging organizations and individuals to donate at uwsn.org/donate or by texting "UWSNFUND" to 313131.

Individuals can contact Nevada 2-1-1 at 1-866-535-5654 to find the needed resource for assistance from the following 13 organi-zations that received funding in this phase:Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada Providing mass shelter options.East Valley Family ServicesProviding a food pantry and rent and mortgage assistance.Emergency Aid of Boulder City, Inc. A local board made up of commu-nity leaders determined how the funds were distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local non-profit direct service agencies in the area. Approximately 50 percent of the $2 million has been awarded to 13 currently vetted emergency assistance nonprofit partners. The local board will be review-ing additional proposals this week to distribute the remaining funds available.

As a community leader with over 60 years of experience uniting individuals, companies, nonprofit organizations, and governmental agencies to create positive change in Southern Nevada, United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) has mobilized the community and acted quickly to develop solutions for those in need. United Way of Southern Nevada's immediate actions to address the COVID-19 crisis include: providing basic needs funding, convening nonprofit and community stakeholders, serving as a hub for volunteers, and creating an asset map of available resources and referrals for the most vulnerable which

injustices and forces keeping our com-munity's most vulnerable residents from a good life. We are bold and innovative to solve our toughest problems. With over 30 years of experience in distributing emergency funding, help will be available through nonprofit organizations who are experienced in providing direct ser-vice assistance. To ensure accountability of the distribution of funds, UWSN is follow-ing the same stringent guidelines it utilizes for the administration of Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funds through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). To ensure all donated funds are dis-tributed to needs resulting from the COVID-19 virus and this state of emergency, Bank of America is covering all of their admin-istrative fees and underwriting expenses related to the Emergency Assistance and Community Needs Fund so that 100% of the donations go to local needs.

Donations will help support Vegas PBS programming and educational resources.Vegas PBS announced today that it will be participating in #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of supporting nonprofits to be held on May 5, 2020. Donations to Vegas PBS will fund its programming and educational resources, including the station’s response to the novel coro-navirus pandemic. To donate to Vegas PBS, visit this link or call 702.737.7500.

#GivingTuesdayNow is an initiative organized by the same nonprofit behind GivingTuesday, an annual event held every Tuesday after Thanksgiving to promote charitable giving and interest in nonprofits and community resources. #GivingTues-dayNow was established as an emergency response to the unprecedented need cre-ated by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Vegas PBS has responded to the needs of thousands of Southern Nevadans during this pandemic in several ways. These services and resources are not possible without the support from our members and donors. Three days after the closure of all schools in Nevada, Vegas PBS launched a web page with at-home learning resources for parents and educa-tors. In late March, we modified our on-air programming to broadcast 12-hours of uninterrupted curriculum-based program-ming, which will continue until the end

of the school year. Alongside the on-air programming, Vegas PBS has printable curriculum guides at vegaspbs.org/learn. A page on the Vegas PBS website, vegaspbs.org/covid19, is dedicated to COVID-19 information from PBS NewsHour and our local public affairs program Nevada Week.

In addition to at-home learning tools for Southern Nevadan children, Vegas PBS is offering online education courses and certifications to support and prepare those adults in the community looking for a new career or advancement. Those interested

can learn more and view the course cata-log at vegaspbs.org/onlineeducation.

The station also provides entertainment and thoughtful programming via the PBS Video App. As an extra member benefit, those who donate $60 annually or $5 per month receive access to even more content in the app with the service Vegas PBS Pass-port. Learn more at vegaspbs.org/passport.

“I truly believe that our community will be able to come together for this event,” said Margaret Ann Schneweis, Member Services Manager at Vegas PBS, about #GivingTuesdayNow. “We’re grateful for

the support we’ve already received, but we still need help to keep providing Southern Nevada with the educational resources and great broadcast content we are known for.”About Vegas PBS

Vegas PBS is a member-supported public television service providing edu-cational content for over 50 years. Vegas PBS builds community through television, education services, and unique experi-ences that create a sense of place, civic and social capital. For 11 consecutive years, Vegas PBS has remained among the top

three most-watched PBS stations in the country. The station offers five unique secondary channels: Create, VEGAS PBS KIDS, Worldview, Rewind and Jackpot!

Vegas PBS provides a robust variety of education services that extend the edu-cational experience beyond the broad-cast. Resources and services include Vegas PBS’ Ready To Learn educational workshops for children and families.

Vegas PBS viewers can access their favorite shows across multiple platforms including broadcast, vegaspbs.org, the PBS Video App and the PBS KIDS Video App.

Due to higher than usual demand for spring produce, Gilcrease Orchard will be closing earlier at 10am. While crops like zucchini and peas regenerate after being picked, carrots and beets do not, there-fore when they are picked over, they are done. But don't worry, there will be more produce coming throughout the summer.

Available for picking in early May: peas, zucchini, and summer squash. Available at the checkout stand: kettle corn, peanut butter, and almond butter. Open Tues-day's, Thursday's, Saturday's, 7 am-10am.About the Gilcrease Family

It all began in 1920 with the arrival of Elda and Leonard Gilcrease and their two sons John Theodore and William Orr. Ted was just a youngster of four and Bill, a baby less than a year old.

Leonard came from a farm family, having been raised at the Gilcrease Ranch in Lem-oore, California. He met Elda at the Uni-versity of Nevada, Reno, where they both graduated with Bachelor’s Degrees. Leonard studied mechanical engineering and Elda

studied music, intending to be an educator. But after marrying and starting their young family, they decided to use Elda’s inheri-tance to purchase over 900 acres in the Las Vegas Valley that included natural artisan springs, known as the Lower Tule Springs, for cultivating crops and raising livestock.

It was a struggle to work the ranch. Just when they thought they would turn the corner to a profitable business, disap-pointment came with the hardships of the depression caused by the stock market crash of 1929. It was enough to discourage Leonard from continuing with their farm life. He left Elda and their two young sons to return to California. Elda was persistent and carried on. By 1930 the couple divorced and Elda continued the ranch for several decades with the aid of her sons. She never remarried and passed away in 1968.The Gilcrease Orchard Foundation

Over the years, the Gilcrease Ranch raised chickens and turkeys sold to the townsfolk and the military base close by.

They grew assorted crops including alfalfa and eventually owned more than 1,500 acres of land, cultivating about 200 acres.

Ted showed the greater interest in farming and took over the management of the ranch and their land holdings, while Bill pursued his interest in art and birds. Nevertheless, they both contributed time and land for the development of the Orchard during the 1970’s. Ted eventu-ally decided to stop alfalfa production and focus on an orchard accessible to the community. Bill assisted by experimenting with apple strains best suited for the arid environment. For nearly 50 years, valley residents enjoy 60 acres devoted to what Ted called his “pick and pay” orchard.

Recognizing his age and poor health were diminishing his ability to run the Orchard,

Ted decided he needed to do something to protect the orchard in perpetuity. In 1997 he, with Bill’s support, decided to establish the non-profit Gilcrease Orchard Founda-tion governed by a Board of Trustees. The founding trustees were Ted, Bill and Mary Ellen Racel. After Ted’s passing in 2003, Bill remained a lifetime trustee, and Ms. Racel added her two children to the board. The Racels managed the Orchard until Bill decided to reorganize the Board of Trust-ees in 2009. The old board stepped down, and on April 30, 2009, he voted in a new Board which included Thalia Dondero, Linn Mills, Robert Murray and Corinne Esco-bar, with Mark Ruben hired as Director. As of 2020, the current board consists of Corinne Escobar, Robert Murray, Dr. Larry Allen, Dennis Swartzell and Tara Pike.
