USER MOTIVATION AND
KNOWLEDGE SHARING IN
IDEA CROWDSOURCING D.Sc. Miia Kosonen

Sciences, Finland
There is nothing new in crowd wisdom itself –
just in the way we are now able to connect
with each other and engage in knowledge-
based interactions.

Crowd wisdom flourishes, when
• there’s a large enough mass of people to
solve the problem
• people have the basic knowledge needed
to discuss the problem
• people have the opportunity to work
independently around the problem.

Idea crowdsourcing = designing a
certain problem or task to an
undefined, large group of people in
order to solicit their creative input
for solving the problem or
improving the situation.
For people who actively participate in sharing and discussing ideas openly, crowdsourcing often represents exploration and human empowerment.
For people who decide to withdraw from sharing and discussing ideas openly, crowdsourcing often represents exploitation.
WHAT’S YOUR ATTITUDE?
Our study at LUT
What types of
benefits do
voluntary users
expect? What
motivates them?
• ”Build it and customers will come”
(Nambisan and Baron, 2009; Füller et al.,
2008)
• Any chosen media, tool or platform is not
applied for it’s own sake, but users expect
some kind of benefit
• Personal integrative benefits
• Social integrative benefits
• Cognitive benefits, learning
• Hedonic benefits

Context of the study
IdeasProject = open innovation and brainstorming community dedicated to harvesting ideas, hosted by Nokia, 2011-2013
Idea crowdsourcing around mobile lifestyle and products
Survey of 244 users in China

Result 1: Social integrative
benefits
The most important
motivator/benefit is belonging
to a valued community.
Result 2: Learning benefits
Allow mutual support and
knowledge processing, not just
”submitting” ideas once.
Implications for practice
Users significantly value
interaction with the hosting
organization.
Resourcing, Reworking,
Recognition: identify your
valuable contributors and
highlight their achievements.
Thank you!
