Editor’s NoteWith today’s rapid urban

growth, what are we doing to prepare ourselves towards sustainable concepts? How are businesses, cities and communi-ties responding to this changing movement? Many companies and cities are taking a closer look at becoming more sustainable. For varies reasons such as global warming, depleting resources, the high cost of utilities and our dependability on foreign sources for many daily necessities. Here at Urban Living we know this is a hot topic. We held our first Business & Community Development Expo

with an emphasis on Urban Growth and community develop-ment/Green Living Expo on June 5th 2008. This Expo brought together leaders from every economic sector throughout Southern California to exchange ideas, and market their products and services. Our attendees received the most recent information about the issues and trends affecting our communities and businesses. They also walked away with solutions on how to incorporate green living into their daily lives. Urban Living Magazine and Townzilla joined forces and developed this expo to address

the challenges we are facing and provide solutions we can implement to ensure continued growth and prosperity. We strive to build our communities through educational awareness. We look forward to presenting more events and a of sharing ideas. We thank all who attended and made this event a great success. We commend our local cities on their ongoing efforts towards urban growth and green, clean and sustainable policies that will benefit us all for years to come.

Down Town Pomona:Antique Walk One can’t spend an hour in Downtown Pomona without sensing the nostalgia created by the historic Fox Theater, record shops, and Antique Row but everything changes on Art Walk nights, when the atmosphere thickens with the kind of excitement that can only be produced by the showing of great art. Every Second and Last Saturday night, over 25 galleries and museum spaces in the Pomona Arts Colony host open receptions that feature a range of work in all media, both classic and contemporary. Emerging and mid-career artists show their work alongside established masters and internationally exhibited artists in this culturally dynamic collection of exhibition spaces, including the American Museum of Ceramic Art, dA Center for the Arts, the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center, Gallery dba 256, and the PO@256 to name just a few. The downtown crowds with visitors and artists, people either walking down a flight of stairs from their Colony loft or hopping on a bus from LA, each of them eager to meet up with old friends and see the latest shows. Art Walk is one of the most popular destinations for those looking for a fun, free, stimulating Saturday Night in the Inland Empire.

Collectors Street Faire Still Draws Them In

Since the 1980s the bustle of one of the longest running street fairs in Southern California has enlivened Pomona’s Antique Row five times a year. Held on the last Saturday in the months of January, March, May, September and November, the Collectors Street Faire attracts collectors and vendors of fine antiques and collectables. Sponsored by the antique dealers of Antique Row, with the assistance of the Downtown Pomona Owners Association, the Faire continues to make the Row a destination for collectors and sellers from all over the LA Basin, Orange County, and the Inland Empire. The 100 and 200 blocks of East 2nd Street are closed off to allow sellers to display items from the smallest treasure to quality

furniture. The small town atmosphere of Metro Pomona adds to the fun of searching for that special item. Many adult collectors admit they developed a love of antiques and collectables by attending Collectors Street Faires as children.

All the action is not limited to tree-lined 2nd Street. The merchants in the 18 antique shops and malls on East 2nd Street get in the spirit by offering price reductions from 10% to 50%, and by loading their stores with their latest acquisitions. Information about current and future Collectors Street Faires can be obtained by calling (909) 620 7430.

Doubletree Airport Hotel has a new flare that is hip and modern;

the principle reason is Executive Chef, Mark Luong. He joined the staff of the Doubletree Airport Hotel about eight months ago and oversees Porter’s Prime Steak, Citrus West, Misty’s Lounge, Vineyards Restaurant and all catering. He brings eight years of training in Napa Valley and graduated from the prestigious “The Culinary Institute of America” and ownership of his own restaurant in San Francisco. This well rounded individual is excited to be part of two worlds he loves, art and business. Mark focuses his staff on excellence and education of fresh new products. Mark grew up in a busy household with ten older siblings the chores and responsibilities were shared by all and it was Mark’s responsibilities to cook for them. His mother not only past down

recipes from generations past, but her joy and love for family. He shares with me the passion for cooking always out weighed the responsibilities of cooking for his family. If you are looking for an updated style to the traditional steak house Porter’s Prime Steak House is it, the décor offers the old traditional feel of Steak House from the past with a definite modern vive, infused with Asian touches. The Sunday Brunch has interactive food stations and seasonal varieties. The DoubleTree Airport Hotel is offering Food Demos 3 times weekly, call and mark your calendars for a unique and favorable treat.

Chef’scorner

Filling a fine dining void in the Inland Empire, Three Forks Chop House, a restaurant with the spirit of Montana and the fresh produce of California, brings a level of elegance, sophistication, a wholesome feeling and rusticity to Claremont. Chef Eric Osley’s emphasis on organic and sustainable ingredients plays a key role at Three Forks Chop House. Chef Osley’s philosophy is to offer an elevated level of service by providing two servers at each table, allowing guests to relax and simply enjoy their dining experience. Chef Osley, a graduate of the California School of Culinary Arts and the Sushi Chef Institute in Little Tokyo, has worked with many top chefs including Alice Waters, Julia Childs, Suzanne Goin, and Jacques Pepin and has won several medals through the American Culinary Federation. In addition, Chef Osley has trained many of the top and rising chefs in Los Angeles including Javier Espinoza at AOC/Lucques and Kris Morningstar at Blue Velvet. He also spent three years working with Kyle Connaughton, the Development Chef for Heston Blumenthal at the Fat Duck, where some of his influence made its way to Three Forks Chop House. Chef Osley is very focused and passionate about his culinary presentations. When asked what inspires him to cook, Chef Osley replied, “The ability to take what I grew up knowing (classic dishes), and rearranging to create something spectacular, as well as infusing ingredients that are big, fun and whimsical. I really enjoy taking my personality and presenting it in a dish.”

A few of the chef’s most memorable dishes are the Single Malt Scotch Pairing Tasting Menu and the Surf & Turf. Both of these meals contain appealing aromas that come right out of the kitchen and onto your table, similar to what many would consider multi-sensory cooking. Chef Osley said, “I like to think anything I cook is memorable, since we live in the moment.” When asked what Chef Osley’s most indispensable kitchen tool is, he immediately said Chris Franken, his Chef de Cuisine; they have formed both a creative bond and friendship throughout the years. For the past several years I have had the pleasure of chartering

different Jets for business and personal travel. In early 2007 I started my search to buy a plane to change the experience of Corporate Jet Travel. Mid 2007 I found what I was looking for in a plane. My Goals for the passengers of N1QH were very aggressive and I planned to provide an experience that was not currently available in Corporate Jet charter service. Since I had been a Charter customer I knew exactly what needed to be done in order to create an unmatchable flying experience. First I need to make sure that we could fly far we could fly fast and we could fly high. This was achieved for N1QH with new engines three separate fuel tanks and the latest in avionics.

The second and equally important issue for this new experience I was creating was the passenger’s amenities. The team at Guardian Jet Center/KMR Aviation (located in Ontario, CA) and I worked around the clock to outfit N1QH with every possible item you could need on a long or short flight. We started with extra wide seats that will lay flat for sleeping. We made sure that each seat has a personal entertainment unit. The onboard entertainment system is like no other. It will allow you to watch a movie or watch the on board map. We even added a cockpit camera that allows you to have a view of your flight. If staying in touch with the ground is what’s important to you we also added an onboard Sirius Satellite radio and satellite phone. The Galley is always stocked with the best wines snacks especially created for N1QH. For personal use on board we have Bose head sets and European blankets and Duvets. Part of the appeal of this plane is its huge size passenger cabin and oversized Powder room which has the finest

selection of soaps and lotions that I personally brought back for the

plane while traveling in the United Kingdom.

I am proud to say that after several months and thousands of man hours that early in 2008 we were able to roll out N1QH also known as Prosperity one. The single highest quality Corporate Jet experiences in the air today. One of my family’s favorite southern California destinations is Bacara Resort just north of Santa Barbara on the coast of California. It took the owner over 25 years to complete there is no finer example of setting the bar to a new level than examples of N1QH and Bacara Resort. Both have left nothing to spare when it comes to satisfying the most experienced of high end luxury travel. For a ultimate weekend getaway I would suggest you book a trip to Bacara and take N1QH. The resort will pick you up at the private airport and the plane and crew will be on stanby for your return flight. And the best news is that from Ontario to Santa Barbara, Bacara Resort is just a short flight away!

YMCA Encourages A Healthier approach

One of the Inland Empire’s oldest non-profit organizations, the Ontario-Montclair YMCA, has always focused on its mission, “to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.” Extending beyond the scope of the traditional workout facility, the YMCA encourages a healthier approach by maintaining an environment that promotes a family-oriented lifestyle. At each of its childcare sites, the children are closely supervised and encouraged to find a balance between playtime activities and responsibility to their schoolwork. At the central facility, coaches and staff seek to promote fair play, discipline, and an individual’s responsibility to each other. It has always been the practice of the YMCA to never deny anyone access to these programs based on their inability to pay. Consequently, The

Ontario-Montclair YMCA seeks to partner with outstanding businesses and/or individuals who are community oriented, both coming together for annual events like Fiesta de Comida, a food party. This food event has always featured the area’s top restaurants and wineries, who take this opportunity to display the latest and greatest from their menus. Guests have also enjoyed light musical entertainment, a lively auction, and friendships, both new and old. This year’s Fiesta de Comida will happen on November 5th and will also feature some exciting changes. One principle difference will be our new location. We are proud to join with the Inland Empire in welcoming the Citizens Business Bank Arena to Ontario. Fiesta de Comida guests will be able to share this new experience as they dine on the main floor of the arena. Additionally, the Ontario-Montclair YMCA is excited to be able to provide guests with a full concert by Grammy Award-winning Latin Jazz musician, Poncho Sanchez. Poncho is world renown for his fusion of the Latin sound with contemporary Jazz. Be sure to mark your calendars for November 5, 2008, with plans for a great evening of food and music. Be encouraged that you are aiding in the YMCA vision, “We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities.”

REIGN SKATE INTO LOCAL YOUTH HOCKEY MARKET

Ontario Reign Team Up with Three Inland Empire Youth H ockey Teams

ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign of the ECHL, an affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, announced today a partnership with three local youth hockey teams in the Inland Empire. One team in each of the Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget divisions will play as the Junior Ontario Reign for the 2008 Spring Continuity League. In an effort to promote hockey awareness throughout the Inland Empire, the Reign supplied all teams with socks and jerseys in Reign team colors with the crest on the front of the jersey. They also provided the coaches’ warm-up suits to wear as they represent the Reign during their games and travels. “Partnering with the Junior Reign has been a great opportunity for us to lend our support to the local hockey community while getting our name out there prior to the start of our inaugural season,” Reign Executive V.P. of Business Development Justin Kemp said. “We have a mission to not only raise awareness, but to grow the sport and develop new and existing players through grassroots initiatives like this.” The Pee Wee Junior Reign, compromised of 13 players born in 1996 and 1997, plays 10 games during the spring continuity season that runs from April through June. Based out of Riverside Ice Town, they take part in the Orange County Select League (www.anaheimice.com).

The Bantam Junior Reign, made up of players born during 1994 and 1995, are based out of Riverside Ice Town and participate in the Spring Super League (www.superleague.biz). We can benefit from the surge of interest the Ontario Reign will bring and the program will assist the kids in keeping a healthy, active lifestyle. The Junior Reign offers a way for kids to stay out of trouble and to be a part of a team environment.” For more information on how to become a member of the Junior Reign, contact Graham Bell at [email protected] - The ECHL opens its 21st season on Oct. 17, 2008 with eight games being played in seven states from Alaska to Florida. Claremont’s Packing House is A Model for California Preservation

When the City of Claremont looked toward expanding its charming and vibrant Village, it had a vision of preserving an historic citrus packing house and turning it into a mixed-use and transit-oriented retail development that others could look toward as a model for green building. In fact, the Claremont Packing House, known for its clean lines, bold features, and historic adaptability, recently won a Preservation Award from the Los Angeles Conservancy. Visiting the structure and enjoying everything from its Hawaiian inspired coffee house to the unique style of its jazz and fondue club, one can see why visiting the Packing House is an experience to be remembered. But this wasn’t always so. Bringing the Packing House back to life was an ambitious undertaking, which took several stakeholders to make the project a reality. According to Ginger Elliott, a Claremont historian, “The original structure was built in stages from 1909 through 1946 and ultimately was comprised of four distinct sections made of hollow clay tile, concrete, corrugated metal, and wood slats.” In 1972, packing operations ceased and the building was sold. Through the 1980's, the building was used as a warehouse facility until it was purchased by the Claremont Redevelopment Agency, which had a “green” vision in mind for the property. The goal was to reuse the interior, which had been closed for over twenty years, and develop it into a mixed use of retail, office, loft apartments, restaurant space, parking and a home for the newly founded Claremont Museum of Art. Taking on the ambitious project was Arteco Partners, who submitted a proposal to the City in 2005. Arteco had

become an expert in live-work lofts in the Inland Empire and the transformation of the Packing House soon began. According to Ms. Elliott, “The second story mezzanine (built in 1946 for the washing and grading of lemons) soon became 15 live-work spaces. On the main floor, the large central open space was transformed into shops, restaurants and a museum on the north and south sides of the building. The 35,000 square feet of basement, originally used to store lemons, was converted to a 91 space parking garage for patrons and business owners. The front-loading dock, originally used for deliveries, soon became outdoor seating for restaurants, and the space on the east side of the building became a plaza entry.” The original corrugated metal ceiling was saved by building an entirely new roof structure on the top, with new corrugated metal serving as the roof. The guard rails along the stairs to the mezzanine were salvaged from the ceiling – including straps and turnbuckles. The building’s original clerestory windows, which are featured in the central atrium of the building, were also reused. Another key feature of the Packing House is the original oak hardwood floors, which were retained through an arduous process of removing the wood piece by piece, renailing the wood and resanding it. The final touch included polishing the floors using a high gloss sealer without any wood stain, as to maintain the natural look and feel of the nostalgic flooring. The end result of this new development is dramatic and the building has a feeling of age and reuse that will be continued well into the 21st century. According to Ms. Elliott, “It might be said if this industrial building over 90 years old can find a new life to benefit thousands of visitors, residents and business owners, then almost any building can be preserved.”
