It seems that each year the time goes by quicker, and this year has been no exception. As we come to the close of the school year, I want to let families know that it has been a privilege and honor to educate your amazing children. At a recent meeting with current and newly elected school board members, the administrative team members introduced themselves and, without exception, told the Board that Fenton students are the most respectful, hard-working and kind students with which they have ever worked. Thank you for raising children who respect each other and their school, come prepared for class, and embrace diversity. It is why Fenton is a special place to be. The mobile food pantry events, Special Olympics, spring break alternative, and other service events are examples when our students shine brightly. Students, parents, and staff members have committed time, resources, and energy every day toward creating a nurturing school environment in which our students can thrive and grow into responsible and caring adults. We wish our Class of 2017 all the best as they use the foundation they have built at Fenton to move onto the next chapter of their lives—whether that is college, the trades, the military, or work. My advice to you is live your life filled with kindness, compassion, and humor! If you get the chance, travel the world, see new things, and dedicate yourself to something bigger. In all that you do, work with passion and pride—for it will carry you to your destiny. In closing, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our Fenton students on a great school year! I wish you all a very safe, fun, and restful summer. During your time off, please read at least five books, and do thousands of acts of kindness for your family, community and each other! Be safe. Sincerely,

James Ongtengco

Principal/Associate Superintendent

Class of 2017 gives lasting gift to FHS The class of 2017 wanted to make a lasting impression on Fenton High School through its class gift. Fifty-three students took time from their spring break to dig up grass and dirt in the courtyard to make room for the brick layers to lay a pathway. The class raised $4,800 to pay for the brick pavers. Although the rainy weather was a factor, the FHS team worked tirelessly over four days to earn 467.5 hours of community service credit and get the job done. Even the contractor who donated his time remarked about how hard the students worked without complaining. Students will be putting the finishing touches on the pathway in the coming weeks. The result will be a beautiful pathway that connects both doors heading out to the courtyard from the community room. Special thanks to Ms. Rajendran, class of 2017 sponsor for her support throughout this project and Director of Buildings and Grounds Mr. Brodie and his crew for being part of the process from the beginning. Also, thank you to Division Leader for math and science Mrs. Luna and her husband Brian Shelton who donated their time, equipment and laborers from their landscaping business to lay the path. And a shout out goes to Mr. Ongtengco for supplying manual labor and working alongside students to make sure the project was completed on time. What a great team effort!

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Parent Connection During the month of May, Fenton’s SEL program will focus on the Illinois State Standard of contributing to the well-being of one’s school & community. Students will reflect on their experiences with community service and brainstorm ways to complete their remaining hours required for graduation. One way to encourage students to complete their hours is to volunteer as a family. According to the United Way (for more information, see http://www.unitedway.org/take-action/volunteer-as-a-family), research has shown that volunteering as a family: • Helps families learn about social issues and provides a new perspective on the world • Provides positive role models and passes on family values to children • Provides new learning experiences and development of new skills for both children and adults • Provides quality time for the family to spend together • Increases interpersonal communication and the problem-solving abilities of family members • Helps youth decide what they want to do with their life Many colleges look for volunteer hours as part of their admission requirements. Additionally, many scholarships list community service as a requirement, and employers often look at volunteer experiences when hiring workers. Colleges and employers usually look for long-term volunteer experiences that have helped the student develop a skill for explore an area of interest, rather than a list of disjointed, one-time opportunities. For some ideas on family- and youth-friendly volunteer opportunities in DuPage County, please visit the following websites:

Giving DuPage: http://givingdupage.org/ Forest Preserve District of DuPage County: http://www.dupageforest.com/Volunteer.aspx DuPage Habitat for Humanity: http://www.dupagehabitat.org/

Students can also visit the Community Service Office at Fenton or contact Ms. Bohnen ([email protected]) for more opportunities. Remember, summer break is a great time to complete hours for students who will continue at Fenton next year. Until next year, stay healthy!
