NEW DATE WILL
BE ANNOUNCED
SOON!!!!
Dear Parents and Caregivers I am writing in an effort to firstly provide you with as accurate an update as possible regarding myself - to the best of my knowledge at this point in time. And secondly, to welcome my replacement for the rest of Semester one. Following discussions with my specialist, regarding my current medical condition, I have been advised to take the rest of Semester one off work. During this time I am hoping to find out more details as to what is the best way forward for me from a medical perspective. This may include further surgery, the extent of which is unknown at this point in time. At the end of Semester one I will need to make a decision to either return to work or extend my leave further. As a result of my extended leave and to provide the College with as little disruption as possible, it has been decided to appoint an Acting Principal from outside Mt Maria Petrie. This person (if necessary) would be able to continue in the role for the rest of the year. I wish to emphasise that a major factor in arriving to this decision was to provide the best solution for the College. I am sure that by now many of you know that Mrs Mandy Sullivan joined the community at Petrie on Monday of this week. Mrs Sullivan has been Deputy Principal at Southern Cross College. She takes up the role of Acting Principal at Mt Maria College Petrie through to the end of Term 2. I welcome Mrs Sullivan to our wonderful College and I wish her the very best, knowing that she will receive the same level of support that I have enjoyed. I take this opportunity to also sincerely thank Mr Markus Ebeling and Mrs Janelle Doohan for the great leadership they have provided in leading the College in my absence since the beginning of the year. I thank you for your continued support of our College. St Maximilian Kolbe, Pray for us St Marcellin Champagnat, Pray for us Mary Our Good Mother, Pray for us And let us remember to always pray for each other,
Kindest Regards Sam

February 2014
Dear Students, Parents, Caregivers, Staff and friends
I am very pleased to be joining the Mt Maria community until the end of Semester 1 while Sam Puglisi is on leave and I have been overwhelmed by the warm welcome I have received. Mt Maria College Petrie, has a fine reputation in the local community and in the broader community of schools which make up Brisbane Catholic Education. I am honoured to be here and already have a sense of the tremendous energy in the College, the professionalism and caring nature of the staff and the enthusiastic attitude of the students. These are some of the essential hallmarks of a good Catholic school. On Monday I was warmly welcomed by the students at our Assembly and presented with flowers, chocolates and the book celebrating 25 years of Mt Maria and Kolbe Colleges. I then had the pleasure of meeting each of the Year 12 students and presenting them with their ‘Senior’ badge. I wish each of the Seniors well in their final year of school and hope that they achieve the goals that they set for themselves. Many thanks to Mrs O’Connor for her organisation and preparation of the students. We also installed the Vice Captains and House Vice Captains from Year 11 and presented them with their badges. Congratulations to: House Vice Captains: Nick Munkley (Talbot) Riley Thompson (Morgan) Jaqueline Mundell (Nolan) SRC Vice Captains: Hannah O’Brien Rebecca Mundell Jennah Murray Corey Finkel
On Monday, staff from our College were involved in an ‘Across School Collaboration’ Day. Key staff members including Principals and Support Teachers from Mt Maria College Mitchelton, St Eugene’s College, Burpengary and ourselves, together with Brisbane Catholic Education personnel visited each of the three schools to observe some of the programs being used to meet the learning needs of their students. The idea is for the schools to share best practice so as to benefit our students. During the second session, Mr Ebeling, Mrs Batson and Mrs Turner addressed the gathering about some of the wonderful opportunities our students have here at Mt Maria College Petrie. Our visitors toured the College and spoke to students volunteering
within KCC, assisting with the preparation and serving of food. Staff also learnt about the Community Access program which allows the students to access all aspects of the local and wider community enhancing their employability skills. This helps us to help them plan for their future. Many thanks to Mr Ebeling, Mrs Batson, Mrs Turner, Mrs McClenaghan, Ms Brohman, Mrs Duke and Mrs Clark for their organisation and assistance.
Just a reminder to Year 10 parents about the Parent Workshop next Tuesday evening 25 February to be held from 5.30pm. During the evening, parents will have the opportunity to gain important information about the many and varied pathways that are available to their students in the senior years of schooling as the students plan for life after school. This will be a very informative evening and I am looking forward to meeting you at this time. Mrs Turner has sent out invitations and reminder notes to parents with more information. On Thursday and Friday Mr Ebeling, Mrs Doohan and I will be gathering with other Leadership Teams from all the Catholic Schools and Colleges in the Northern part of BCE to plan for the year ahead.
Best wishes for the week ahead Sts Maximillian Kolbe and Marcellin Champagnat pray for us. St Mary of the Cross, pray for us.

Opening Mass
The Opening Mass was a wonderful community celebration led by Fr Peter
McCartin. We were delighted that so many families and friends of the College
were in attendance. Also in attendance were staff from Brisbane Catholic
Education including Ms Cathy Jackson (Director, School Services North) and
Dr Pat Coughlan (Area Supervisor), Marist representatives Br Neville
Solomon (Regional Director) Elizabeth Falconer (Mission and Life) and
members of the Youth Ministry Team, Councillor David Dwyer and Cathy
Dwyer, and P and F President Mrs Donna Wyers. Many thanks to all present,
for supporting this important celebration.
The theme “Serve One Another” was highlighted
throughout the Mass. This theme encourages an
attitude of love. Throughout the year we will focus
on ways in which we can live with a more
compassionate awareness of the needs of other
people. The Mass began with the Year 8’s leading
the entrance procession. They were formally
welcomed into the school community and blessed by
Fr Peter McCartin. The Senior leaders were also
blessed and presented with their badges. They
confidently committed to fulfilling their responsibilities as the 2014 leaders of our College. Congratulations
to all the leaders for 2014. Many thanks to all staff and students who helped prepare for the Mass.
Lent
Our preparations will begin next week in the lead up to Lent. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the
Season of Lent. This is a six week preparation time for Easter.
Year 10 Reflection Day
All Year 10 students will attend the Year 10 Reflection Day on March 10. This is an important
aspect of the Religious Education Program. Information about this day will be sent home next week.
If you send out goodness from yourself, or if you share that which is happy or good within you, it will all come back to you
multiplied ten thousand times. In the kingdom of love there is no competition; there is no possessiveness or control. The more love you give away, the more love you will have.

Seniors 2014 News
It has been a busy few weeks for the seniors with camps,
excursions and swimming carnivals. The school year started
early for the Year 12 leaders spending three days at Marist
Ashgrove for a leaders forum. The forum allows for the
Marist school leaders from around Queensland to meet and
work together on what it means to be a leader at a Marist
school.
The following week the Year 12 Peer Support leaders came
together for a two day training program to learn about their
role as Peer Support Leaders and to train in the preparation
and implementation of a program on “Resilience” to the
Year 8 cohort. In week two the students put their training
into practice by attending the Year 8 camp. The students
enjoyed the experience working with the Year 8’s and have
formed an early bond with their Year 8 House group.
Congratulations to the Year 12 leaders and the Peer Support Leaders who received their badges last week at the
Opening Mass. I am sure these students will lead the school well with their positions of responsibility over this school
year.
Congratulations also to the College Vice Captains, SRC Captains and all Senior Students who were presented their
badges at assembly on Monday.
Last Thursday the senior Science and Biology students attended
the Qld Institute of Medical Research. Due to the interest
demonstrated by the students and their exemplary behaviour
whilst at the institute they have been invited back later in the year
to look at another research program.
Finally, well done to the students who swam at the school
swimming carnival last Friday. Special mention to the House
Captains Rachel (Morgan), Makayla (Nolan) and Matt (Talbot -
currently overseas), for their organisation and encouragement to
their swimmers. The House Vice Captains also were very
involved with their support to the leaders and swimming in many
races.

Senior Curriculum
Welcome back to the senior students as they commence the academic year for 2014.
Mt Maria College Petrie College continues to offer the authority subject English to senior students and has expanded the senior curriculum with the introduction of two new authority subjects: Mathematics A and Senior Biology. The College’s academic pathway sees students within the senior school enrolled in a very wide range of TAFE courses. Mrs Fiona Turner, Vocational Education Coordinator and Mrs Helm have worked tirelessly to organise these important learning opportunities for our students.
Mt Maria College Petrie has fully implemented the Australian Curriculum across the areas of English, Mathematics, Science and History in Years 8 to 10. Geography will be introduced Term four in 2014. The College will develop an implementation plan for the remaining areas of the curriculum, as it is released by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority.
It remains important that students within the Senior School understand the need to be committed to their studies and their future. To ensure this the College has a written policy outlining assessment procedures that need to be followed as determined by Queensland Studies Authority (QSA). All students within the senior school have received a copy of this policy. I encourage parents to access the Senior School Assessment Policy and the senior assessment schedule via the Mt Maria College Petrie Website.

Vocational Education Training and Careers
Year 9 students will be provided with laptops under our Laptop Program to use until the end of Year 12. These laptops have a 4 year warranty and
Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) insurance.
The model we have chosen is an Acer Iconia W510, which is a cross between a computer and a tablet, with a touchscreen able to be unclipped
from the keyboard.
Unfortunately the demand for these laptops is greater than the supply so there has been a delay in delivery to us due to
limited supplies coming into Australia. We have been told that we should get them the week beginning the 17th February
which means we will be able to distribute them by the end of February after they have been imaged for use at the College.
A letter will be sent home, together with our Acceptable Use policy, with a time and date for parents to pick up the laptop
as soon as we take delivery from our suppliers.
If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
