From the Principal We end the Term at Tempe with Year 12 graduating and Year 11 completing the final Preliminary Assessment period. We wish both year groups all the best. Any student who will not be attending Tempe High School in 2019 is asked to bring a letter from a parent to me. This information is required for the organisation of the next twelve months. Year 12 has been well prepared for the HSC and practical subjects have produced some excellent Major Works and performances which have already been examined. I would like to thank the teachers and other staff for preparing them so soundly for their HSC. Additionally Year 12 have benefitted from the support of their parents and carers. Ms Gerges and Ms Dascoli have relayed to me how proud they are of their year group and I thank them for all their hard work which has helped these students develop and grow into fine citizens. As proof of the wonderful potential we are now seeing realised the final Honour Roll for exceptional results in Report Cards is published in this newsletter.
We say goodbye at the end of this term To Mr Beazley who has been successful in gaining a “sea change” transfer. He has been an excellent teacher in our Science faculty and a supportive Year Advisor for Year 7. Ms Siddiqua will be stepping into the Year Adviser Roll. Mr McDonell will be taking over Mr Beazley’s junior classes. Mr S Dassaklis—Principal
After an enjoyable three day process I am pleased to announce the Year 12 leaders for 2019. A strong field of candidates impressed the selection panel through their written applications, forum discussions and interviews. Six candidates were selected as the office bearers as follows:

Greetings from the Office of the Deputies End of term 3 is indeed an extremely busy yet exciting time. Our senior students reach key milestones in their learning journey and our junior school is progressing steadily through their teaching and learning programs. A reminder that we have access to the Elevate Study Skills Program to support our students and parents through the learning, revision and examination process. The school curriculum and timetable for next year is beginning to take shape as student subject choices are revised, and staff allocations continue to be refined to reflect the needs of the school community. The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy is well and truly on target for a 2019 start (Years 9 &11) and the implementation of the Communications and Technology (CAT) position is allowing for exciting developments such as the SENTRAL parent portal coming your way. Our school planning and programming is moving towards addressing the needs of our high achieving students and how we can best identify and support their learning needs. To facilitate this we have booked the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information Centre (GERRIC) to train our staff at the beginning of next year. This has meant that our school calendar dates for 2019 will have to change. Here are the proposed dates for 2019 as presented to staff and the P & C:
Looking forward to a refreshing spring break and seeing you all back to school ready for an amazing term 4. Ms M Fountoulis & Ms J Trotter

YEAR 12 HONOUR ROLL STUDENTS
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
Bring your own device is a system where students
bring a computing device to school which they can
connect to the Tempe High network. This enables
them to access cloud based programs such as Google
Suite, Google Classroom and Microsoft 365 in the
classroom by logging in through their Education
department portal. It will be expected that Year 9 and
11 to are bring a computing device from the start of the
school year 2019 with the rest of the school to follow in
2020.
Tempe High is spending 2018 preparing for the
implementation of BYOD. The Tempe High School
BYOD policy can be found on school the website or
http://tiny.cc/86x6yy. The policy was presented to the
P&C for comment and a discussion ensued. For the
minutes of that meeting please take a look at the
school website. Concerns included gaming and
appropriate use of devices. These issues have been
addressed and included in the policy.
The following procedures have been administered to
improve the 2019 transition to BYOD:
Tempe High will be implementing digital citizenship
lessons in Year 9 2019 and Year 7 will undertake
digital citizenship lessons as part of the new PDHPE
syllabus.
To date Years 8 – 10 have participated in a Gaming
Addiction work shop run with the view to make it a
permanent part of our education programmes.
Staff has been taking part in training with a number of
sessions having been run on utilising devices as a
learning tool in the classroom.
A parent information session on BYOD took place for
Year 8 and Year 10 parents and students on
Wednesday 15th August at subject selection night.
This innovation is a big change for all members of our
school community, it would be strongly encouraged for
all guardians to read the Tempe BYOD policy. After
having read the policy if you have any further concerns
please contact the school.

Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Congratulations to the students from Year 9 and 10 who successfully completed the adventurous journeys component of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award. The final expedition involved completing a section of the “Great North Walk”, camping at Crosslands Reserve.
Mr G Miller—Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator
To complete their Duke of Edinburgh the students also need to complete three months of volunteering encouraging them to connect with and contribute to the wider community. As well they need to do for three months some form of physical recreation and to learn a new skill to encourage the development of personal interests.
Tempe High also offers Duke of Edinburgh at Silver level. This involves undertaking two slightly more challenging 3 day adventurous journeys.

PDHPE FACULTY As a PDHPE teacher and sports coach, we are privileged to see many talented students in a range of different sports. However, every so often we get to be witness to something truly magical. Our open boys volleyball team produced this magic on the weekend when we played a two day event for Schools Cup at Sydney Olympic Park. The draw was one of the hardest I had seen. We were playing the top volleyball schools in the area and two state teams. The State teams are made up of the very best volleyball players in the area, put together to make a super team. I wasn’t sure how the boys would fare, but even I underestimated just how far they have come. They have never played so well. They were attacking and diving for every ball and rallying hard for every single point. There was not one player in the team who didn’t play an amazing game of volleyball. The first State team was rattled and we came within three points of taking the set from them. By the time we played the next top team (Ryde Secondary College), we had an audience from four different schools. Nobody could believe the rallies and the incredible pick ups that both teams were doing. As the Boys went on to defeat Carlingford, their confidence and ability just continued to grow. You know you are coaching a talented team when you suddenly have State Coaches approaching you and wanting to know more about your team. In fact, they were saying that they would love to have the whole team as part of their State team! We look forward to finding out our State ranking in the next few weeks. Thanks to the Open Boys volleyball team for their incredible effort and for making me one very proud coach. Ms Bolton—PDHPE Teacher
CAREERS FACULTY
Year 12 A reminder that the UAC deadline for on-time applications is 28th September. If you miss this deadline there will be a fee of $200 to select your UAC course preferences. If you need assistance with UAC, EAS, course selec-tion etc. please ensure that you come and see me ear-ly in Term 4. Mr S Fawcett—Careers Advisor
LIBRARY NEWS Could parents please encourage their students to check if they have any overdue library books? To see what they have out they need to log onto the Department’s student portal and click on the ‘Oliver Library’ link. If they click on ‘Loans’ in the dropdown menu under their name (top right hand corner of the page) it will show which books they have out and which ones are overdue. Please encourage your students to look for and return any overdue books. This is especially important for the Year 12s as they won’t be able to be signed out if they still have library books. And remember – if you want your students to do well – encourage them to read, read, read. Ms K Salisbury (Teacher—Librarian)

STUDY SKILLS As the Term 4 final examinations approach, it is a pertinent time to remind Tempe High students and parents of the Study Skills programs that are administered by our partners Elevate Education. Elevate Education have been working with Tempe High since 2017, delivering in-school workshops that provide our students with effective and practical study strategies to improve confidence and results with examinations. The study skills program at Tempe are more than a one off work shop, the Teachers of Tempe High are committed to facilitating study skills techniques to our students and consistently apply these practices across all subject areas. I would implore parents and caregivers to inquire with their child about the Study Skills practices and techniques that have been delivered by their teachers and Elevate Education. Elevate Education provide our students with exclusive access to their Elevate Student Portal which include the features of video tips, study skills templates, practice exam questions and written tips. The Elevate Education student portal can be accessed via https://au.elevateeducation.com/ Tempe High School (presenters) password: rondo

HSIE FACULTY Talk for Water in World On the 5th July 2018, our class 7 Purple went on an excursion to the Cooks River. Our guide was a lady named Aunty Jenny and she talked about how the Cooks River can remind us of friendship and the communication between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. The talk completely changed my view on the river and made us think of it differently. by Brooke 7P Australian Geography Competition 2018 In May, 18 students from Tempe High School tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2018 Australian Geography Competition. A number of student geographers at our school performed to a very high level in the Competition this year with Helen Chen (Year 10), Jeffery Zhong (Year 10) and Winson Lee (Year 7) achieving distinctions and 5 students achieving credits. Over 72,000 students from 780 schools across Australia entered the Australian Geography Competition so the results give us an external benchmark as to how our students are going in certain aspects of geography. Bernard Fitzpatrick, the Competition’s national coordinator, said; “The Competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence.” “Geography is an important subject which develops a student’s understanding of the spatial interrelationships between people and place. It helps students appreciate the complex nature of local, regional and global social, economic, and environmental interactions,” said Mr Fitzpatrick. High-achieving Year 11 students from the 2018 Australian Geography Competition will take part in a six-day training/selection event, Geography’s Big Week Out being held on Kangaroo Island, South Australia in early October this year. From this event, four students will be chosen as members of the Team which will represent Australia at the 2019 International Geography Olympiad in Hong Kong, China. The Competition is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland, and in NSW it is sponsored by Macquarie University.

Year 12 Society and Culture Excursion to Auburn
Thursday 13th
September
This excursion involved the Year 12 Society and Culture class visiting the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque and the Islamic Science and Research Academy (ISRA). It offered us a different perspective on Islam as many of us had not attended a Mosque before and had little knowledge about the belief system. We also attended an informative talk at ISRA that was beneficial in aiding our course knowledge and challenging our perceptions of the Muslim faith. We finished off our excursion with a delicious and filling meal at Jasmin1, which gave us a great cultural insight and a chance to share a late lunch together. Holistically, it was an immersive and engaging experience in developing our understanding of Islam as a belief system and also expanded our social and cultural literacy.

WAFTUS SCIENCE CHALLENGE Throughout Term 2, 12 Year 10 Tempe High students mentored a class from Wilkin’s Public School. They took part in a 10 week science challenge, known as WAFTUS (Wilkins, Ashfield, Fort Street, Tempe, UTS and Summer Hill). This program allowed the primary school students to develop greater scientific inquiry, and assisted the Year 10 students with their leadership skills. As a result of the program, UTS invited Tempe High to participate in a science based workshop, where we were able to explore the first ever super lab in Australia - which featured modern equipment and technology for the accommodation of over 200 students. Alongside this, we visited the Crime Scene Simulation Lab. The forensic students at UTS constructed a city-like apartment, to provide students with a practical experience in crime scene investigation. We were fortunate enough to view the cutting edge technology in their 360-degree interactive data visualisation facility, referred to as the UTS Data Arena. Overall, the program achieved many outcomes, including; gaining an insight to possible pathways after school, increasing leadership capabilities in terms of organisation, managing small groups, and independent responsibilities. Participating in this program was a unique experience that would be highly recommended to future years. by Larissa Ahmad and Mary Karydis—Year 10 students
