Welcome to CMA Conference

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2020 CMA Conference. This year’s Conference will be very different to those of recent years.

All of us have been challenged by the impact of COVID-19. But as people of hope, COVID-19 has also provided an opportunity to upgrade our skills and knowledge. We will miss the fellowship the physical conference provides and look forward to the time we can get together again. The program for the conference covers a wide range of topics. And this year, there will be an opportunity to attend more sessions than would usually be the case.

The number of registrations for the conference is very encouraging. I pray God will bless you as you join the sessions of most importance to you. And may we honour God by the way we lead the organisations we serve.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic our churches and ministries are facing increasing demands

and challenges. The pressures we face will cause uncertainty and financial concerns that will stretch our resources beyond anyone’s expectations. In light of the COVID-19 outbreak and our Lord’s ability to provide for His people, our conference will be addressing scores of valuable topics that boards and teams should be engaging with, both now and into the future.

We have had to work hard to rearrange the planned physical event into an online one, and I wish to express my personal gratitude to all the conference speakers, who have patiently worked with us through the process. The end result is an event with lots of high-quality input from many experts, as well as some CMA Dialogues, networking, and panel discussions.

Virtually all sessions will be recorded, so if you don’t attend the ‘live’ version of a presentation, you’ll still be able to download the notes and the video recording.

How to participate onlineThe Online Conference provides complete access to all sessions, for the one registration fee. Once you’ve paid for your conference registration, you will be given access to the Conference Portal, which contains links and passwords for all presentations. The sessions take place in Zoom webinars or meetings, over the full six-week conference period, and the recordings and speaker notes are loaded into the portal the following day, where you can view or download them at your leisure.

Although the format is different, our desire is the same as ever: that your spirit is nourished, and that your skills are honed to enable you to more effectively lead and govern the ministry that God has called you to. As Psalm 16:8 says, may we all keep our eyes on the Lord, that we may be unshaken in pursuit of His purposes for us in the days ahead.

Dr Omar Djoeandy Missions Engagement Consultant, SIM AustraliaOmar likes to say he is CIA – not the group that chase terrorists - but Chinese ethnically, born in Indonesia and an Australian since 10. He studied Medicine at University of New South Wales in Sydney and attained a Master of Divinity (MDiv) at NEGST (Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology) in Kenya. He served as an Associate Pastor at Nairobi Chapel, an inter-denominational church that grew from about 800 people in 1998 to over 2,500 in 2003. Dr Craig Furneaux Senior Lecturer, Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit StudiesDr Craig Furneaux is a Senior Lecturer and Subject Area Coordinator at The Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies, Queensland University of Technology. Craig has over 20 years’ experience working for, leading, and researching with nonprofit organisations, with a particular long term focus on building management capabilities. He has been an ordained minister, and board member of a number of community groups. Craig’s research in the Centre focuses broadly on accountability and capability in social enterprises and faith based charities.

Ruth has extensive experience in nonprofit leadership roles and has spent many years researching how workplace culture can achieve engaged workforces and organisational sustainability. Her special interests are measuring social outcomes and developing high performing leaders and teams. Steven Ling Saward DawsonSteven is a consultant and manager in one of Saward Dawson’s business advisory teams. Steven has found a niche in getting accounting software to work for his clients. He enjoys understanding business processes and improving them. Anna Longley Assistant Commissioner General Counsel, ACNCAnna Longley is the ACNC’s Assistant Commissioner – General Counsel. She acts as the senior legal advisor to the ACNC Commissioner and the Advisory Board, and has legal oversight of the ACNC’s work regulating charities. Having worked at the Australian Taxation Office for over 16 years prior to becoming General Counsel, Anna has an extensive background in public administration. Most recently, she was an Assistant Commissioner in Private Wealth, leading assurance and review work on high-wealth individuals, private groups and not-for-profit entities. Anna also sat on the ATO’s General Anti-Avoidance Rules Panel, and for two years oversaw Fringe Benefits Tax for the ATO. Anna is experienced in dispute resolution and litigation. She has appeared for the Commissioner of Taxation in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and the Federal Court in cases on income tax, GST and indirect tax, superannuation and not-for-profit matters. Anna holds a Bachelor of Laws with Honours, a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice and a Masters of Taxation. She was admitted to practice as a lawyer in 2005. In the charity sector, Anna has spent several years volunteering for and on the board of community legal centres.

Rob Martin Partner, First Fruit Institute USARob has been involved in Christian ministry since his conversion in 1976. He first served as the editor of a Christian publication and then for six years with the Orange County Rescue Mission (USA). He left the Rescue Mission in 1983 to become General Manager of Fieldstead & Company, a private philanthropy company. Later, he served as a consultant on communications, leadership and fund-raising for Christian mission. This was followed by a brief stint as U.S. Director of the Lausanne Committee, before beginning in 1990 as Executive Director with First Fruit, Inc., a private charitable foundation. He served in this position until 2009 when he began a fulltime assignment as Partner with the First Fruit Institute serving ministries and colleague foundations as a coach on a variety of organisational issues. Rob also serves with the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization as Senior Associate for Global Philanthropy and as a seminar leader on Fund Raising and Leadership for Mission. Rob was educated as a journalist, and spent his formative career years in newspaper work. He and his wife, Bev, have raised three daughters and currently live on Useless Bay on Whidbey Island in Washington State.

Lyall Mercer Managing Director, Mercer PRLyall Mercer is managing director of Mercer PR and is considered Australia’s leading public relations practitioner within the faith-based sector. As well as dealing with large corporate clients, he has assisted Christian churches and ministries across Australia and in many other countries to deal with issues that could have damaged their reputation. One of Lyall’s specialties is crisis communications preparation and he is certified with the Institute for Crisis Management in the United States. Felicia Limmer Lecturer in Marketing, Christian Heritage CollegeFelicia Limmer is a lecturer in Marketing with Christian Heritage College, Carindale, Queensland. After completing a Diploma in Christian Studies from RHEMA Bible Training centre, Felicia went on to complete her Business (Marketing) Degree and later Master of Public Relations with the University of Southern Queensland. She has a depth of experience in consumer, not for profit and services marketing having worked with a number of well-known brands including Telstra, the Gold Coast City Council and as the National Marketing Manager of Baskin Robbins Australia. As well as her work with Christian Heritage College Felicia has also held roles teaching marketing for the Australian Institute of Business, Central Queensland University and Swinburne University. Peter is a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ), is the chairperson of the Audit Advisory Committee for CA ANZ, a member of the CA ANZ Audit Module Advisory Panel and the Australian Audit Standard Board Roundtable Group. Peter also is invited to provide input to the Australian Accounting Standard Board on matters impacting the not-for-profit and SME sectors and is a member of the ACNC Professional Advisor Group. Peter has also been involved with a number of board and audit committees.

Dr Jonathan Staggs Business Lecturer and MBA Coordinator, Christian Heritage CollegeDr Jonathan Staggs is a business lecturer and MBA Coordinator at Christian Heritage College, Carindale, Queensland. Jonathan’s research explores the causal factors and actors that contribute to institutional change in industries including health, science, coal-seam gas, and viticulture. He earned a PhD in business from the University of Queensland. This PhD explored the origins of the ‘Smart State’ strategy of the Queensland Government and factors that led to $1b Federal and State Government and philanthropic investment into a bio-medical cluster in Queensland. Jonathan’s doctoral research has been published in the Cambridge Journal of Economics. Jonathan has a strong interest in entrepreneurial leadership in all spheres of society and in a variety of cultural contexts. Jonathan served as a ‘tentmaker’ in Japan and his passion is that all cultures might experience the Holy Spirit. He loves to pray for the politics and economies of towns and regions.

Dr Justine Toh Senior Fellow, The Centre for Public ChristianityJustine Toh is Senior Fellow at the Centre for Public Christianity where she speaks and writes about the Christian faith in a secular age in publications like the Sydney Morning Herald, ABC online, and ABC Religion & Ethics. She hosts the occasional series Spiritual Lifehack on ABC RN’s Soul Search and, very occasionally, guest hosts ABC RN’s God Forbid, a panel program exploring contemporary religion. Justine is also a presenter of the documentary For the Love of God: How the church is better and worse than you ever imagined.

Dr Jeannie Trudel President/CEO, Christian Heritage CollegeDr Jeannie Trudel is currently the President/CEO of Christian Heritage College, Carindale, Queensland. Jeannie has a global background, having lived and worked in various countries. Her calling to Christian higher education includes serving at Southern Wesleyan University and Indiana Wesleyan University in the U.S. before returning to Australia. Through various organizations, she was a mediation trainer and organization development consultant in the U.S. As an academic, she has taught graduate and undergraduate courses and led a business school. Formerly a solicitor in Melbourne, she enjoyed her time as a court-appointed/approved mediator in Los Angeles, Boston, and Louisville. She has a strong interest in conflict management in the workplace. She enjoys travelling and learning different languages in order to connect with others. Her passion is for people, particularly university students to be ignited with the love of Christ and she loves to pray for others.

Elizabeth Shalders Senior Associate, Head of Not for Profit, Lewis Holdway LawyersElizabeth Shalders is a Senior Associate at Lewis Holdway Lawyers in Melbourne and heads their Not for Profit practice division. Dr Tania Watson Executive Minister, Riverview ChurchTania has recently been appointed as an Executive Minister of Riverview Church. Between 2009-19, Tania was Executive Minister of Churches of Christ in WA. In this role, Tania was able, with the support of the COCWA Board and Staff, to foster a season of stability and organisational alignment that facilitated a renewed focus on the shared mission of Christ through the Churches. Tania completed a Doctor of Ministry in 2018 with a thesis that considers the relationship between trust, authority and leadership in the Australian cultural context. Tania is married to Neil and they are enjoying a new phase of life living in an apartment with their Schnoodle named Sundae.
