THE FAREWELLLulu Wang, USA, 2019, 101 min, English & Mandarin with subtitles, PGIn this funny, uplifting tale based on an actual lie, Chinese-born, U.S.-raised Billi (Awkwafina, “Crazy Rich Asians”) reluctantly returns to Changchun to find that, although the whole family knows their beloved matriarch, Nai-Nai, has been given mere weeks to live, everyone has decided not to tell Nai Nai herself. To assure her happiness, they gather under the joyful guise of an expedited wedding, uniting family members scattered among new homes abroad. As Billi navigates a minefield of family expectations, she finds there’s a lot to celebrate: a chance to rediscover the country she left as a child, her grandmother’s wondrous spirit, and the ties that keep on binding even when so much goes unspoken. A heartfelt celebration of both the way we perform family and the way we live it, masterfully interweaving a gently humorous depiction of the good lie in action with a richly moving story of how family can unite and strengthen us, often in spite of ourselves. —Rose Theatre

BECOMING NOBODYJamie Catto, USA, 2019, 81 minutes, PG“Becoming Nobody” truly represents the core arc of Ram Dass’ teachings and life. His ability to entertain and his sense of humor are abundantly evident in a conversation that brings us around to address the vast question of ultimate freedom. This is the quintessential portal to Ram Dass, author of Be Here Now, as well as other spiritual classics. He has led a multifaceted life and defined a generation of inner explorers and seekers of truth and wisdom. Through his turns as rock star psychologist, counter-culture rascally adventurer, Eastern holy man, stroke survivor and compassionate caregiver, Ram Dass has worn many hats on his journey, the narrative of which is revealed in this film. The film captures a loving man full of joy, wit, honesty and wisdom, at ease while sharing his considerable pains and pleasures.

APOCALYPSE NOW: THE FINAL CUTFrancis Ford Coppola, USA, 1979/2019, 182 minute, 14AApocalypse Now turns 40 with what Francis Coppola says is the definitive cut, all of it restored and polished for 4K digital projection. This is a spectacular, hallucinatory phantasmagoria of the Vietnam war, arguably the high point in Hollywood’s artistic renaissance of the 1970s. Martin Sheen is Willard, dispatched up-river to terminate bonkers green beret Colonel Walter Kurtz (Marlon Brando). Kurtz’s madness only reflects the imperatives of US foreign policy. —Vancouver International Film Festival

MARIANNE & LEONARD: WORDS OF LOVENick Broomfield, USA, 2019, 101 minutes, PG, CCThe story of an artist and a muse. Leonard Cohen wrote “So Long, Marianne” and “Bird on a Wire” directly about Marianne Ihlen, the woman he met at a crucial, formative age, and with whom he fell madly in love. They inspired each other on a Greek island called Hydra, a magical place to which Broomfield’s film regularly returns, and a place the filmmaker visited as a young man and spent time with Ihlen, who actually inspired him to make his first film. It was what you’d imagine the life of a young future poet would be on a Greek island—days of writing, drinking, drugs, sex, and sun. Moving to the States, Cohen’s star rose while Ihlen stayed in Hydra. They would have largely separate lives, but Broomfield makes the case that they remained each other’s greatest influence. —RogerEbert.com

A ROOM WITH A VIEWUK, 1985, 117 minutesDirector James Ivory’s extraordinary adaptation of E. M. Forster novel. Helena Bonham Carter plays a young Edwardian woman who is trying to sort out her romantic feelings, divided between an enigmatic free spirit (Julian Sands) she meets in Florence and a priggish bookworm (Daniel Day-Lewis). Funny, sexy, and sophisticated, this art-house hit features a sublime cast - Simon Callow, Judi Dench, Denholm Elliott, and Maggie Smith - and remains a touchstone of intelligent romantic cinema. —Criterion Collection

october 9 & 10 (7:00 & 9:00)

AQUARELAVictor Kossakovsky, UK/Germany/Denmark, 2018, 90 min, English & Russian with subtitles, PGFilmed in such diverse locations as Greenland, Venezuela, Siberia’s Lake Baikal and the middle of the Atlantic, the latest ravishing visual feast from Russia’s most poetic formalist filmmaker takes a deep dive into watery realms around the world, offering up an experience that can truly be described as immersive. Shot with the latest high-tech equipment, this stream of hyper-high-definition images records glaciers, icebergs, mountainous waves, rushing waterfalls and so on to create a cinematic collage that verges on abstraction. Even though there’s no narration, it’s easy to infer an ecological message here. Clearly, the film is extolling respect for the natural world’s majesty, immense power and gob-smacking beauty, leaving viewers to fill in the gaps themselves with statistics about climate change. —The Hollywood Reporter

october 11 & 12 (3:00 matinee, 7:00 & 9:15)

AFTER THE WEDDINGBart Freundlich, USA, 2019, 113 minutes, PG, CCAn adaptation of the Oscar-nominated Danish film of the same name. Michelle Williams plays Isabel, a woman working at an orphanage in India who is told there’s a wealthy patron in New York prepared to donate a substantial amount of money. Isabel travels to seal the deal with Theresa (Julianne Moore), a confident, controlled sort with an artist husband (Billy Crudup) and three children, of whom the oldest is getting married. Once in New York, Isabel is told Theresa needs the weekend to think things through. And from there, things get pretty complicated…. —The Film Stage

LINDA RONSTADT: THE SOUND OF MY VOICE Rob Epstein & Jeffery Friedman, USA, 2019, 94 minutes, PGThis new documentary profiles the 10-time Grammy winning singer and proves aptly titled. Not only does it provide many examples of the glorious vocals that made its subject a pop music superstar, it also allows us to hear her voice as she narrates her story. Astutely chronicling an amazing musical career that ended prematurely due to Parkinson’s disease, the doc will delight the singer’s old fans and likely make her many new ones as well. It chronicles Ronstadt’s myriad stylistic shifts including folk, pop, rock, country, operetta, the Great American Songbook and traditional Mexican music. It’s hard to imagine any other singer who could pull that off both creatively and commercially. Including reminiscences by Don Henley, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, among many others. —The Hollywood Reporter

BLUE VELVETDavid Lynch, USA, 1986, 120 minutes, 18AJeffrey (Kyle MacLachlan) makes an unsettling discovery: a severed human ear, lying in a field. In the mystery that follows, by turns terrifying and darkly funny, director David Lynch burrows beneath the surfaces of small-town life. Jeffrey gets closer to his fellow sleuth, Sandy (Laura Dern), as well as their person of interest, lounge singer Dorothy (Isabella Rossellini)—and facing the fury of Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper), a psychopath who will stop at nothing….One of the most influential American films of the past few decades. —Criterion Collection

HONEYLANDLjubomir Stefanov & Tamara Kotevska, Macedonia, 2019, 86 minutes, Turkish w subtitles, PGAn exquisitely photographed documentary. Shot over three years, this elegant film — which nabbed several top prizes at Sundance — begins as the intimate portrait of a beekeeper who makes famously good honey, and then expands to become something of a parable. The heroine is 50-something Hatidze Muratova, who lives in a tiny hut in a ruggedly mountainous area of Macedonia, 20 miles from the nearest town and seemingly hundreds of years from modernity. Hatidze spends her life looking after her mother, and keeping bees as her family has done for generations. She works with hives high up on precarious mountain ledges. Her basic rule is simple: When you harvest honey, you only take half — and leave the other half for the bees. What makes Hatidze such a wonderful character isn’t simply the decency and warmth revealed by her extraordinary snaggle-toothed smile. It’s that she embodies a sane, respectful and engaged way of living with nature. She knows that if you want honey, you must find a way of living in harmony with the bees that create it. THE DEATH AND LIFE OF JOHN F. DONOVANXavier Dolan, Canada/UK, 2018, 123 minutes, 14AXavier Dolan is often at his best mining personal experience for lush, revealing, heart-on-the-sleeve melodrama. His English-language debut feels like a return to form as he explores the isolating loneliness of celebrity and the eternal struggle to be true to yourself. John F. Donovan (Kit Harington) is a popular star of television and movies who means the world to millions, but especially to 11-year-old Rupert (Jacob Tremblay). The aspiring young thespian has moved to England with his long-suffering mother (Natalie Portman) and is struggling to find anywhere that he fits in. One source of comfort is his fan worship of Donovan and the string of letters they exchange. Tremblay plays Rupert’s smart aleck eloquence and hysterical outbursts to perfection —Screen Daily

MUSEO [MUSEUM]Alonzo Ruizpalacios, Mexico, 2018, 128 min, Spanish with subtitlesA good-natured dramedy-thriller starring Gael Garcia Bernal. In 1985, Mexico was horrified when thieves were reported to have broken into the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City and stolen 140 priceless Mayan and Aztec objects. The crime was found to be the work of two students, smart or reckless enough to have carried out the robbery but too stupid to have grasped that no one would wish to buy the goods. These objects were simultaneously priceless and worthless. The students are two criminal non-masterminds who are out of their depth as soon as they hit the water. It is edge-of-the-seat stuff when they have to break into the glass case that holds an unimaginably precious Mayan mask. And then they’re off on their incompetent journey to sell their knapsack full of treasure….It’s a very entertaining night in the museum. —The Guardian
