University of the Arctic

Digital Library

The University of the Arctic Library Breakout Group recommends that

• UArctic create a library that will identify and make circumpolar resources accessible to UArctic constituents.

Anticipated Tasks

• develop a portal to specialized Arctic resources for UArctic constituents

• explore the creation of a centralized catalogue

• explore methods of collective acquisition of appropriate northern materials

Principles for Collection-Building

• Have a plan– Including an evaluation component

• Build what your users need– Ask them what they need

• Don’t repeat anyone else’s work

• Keep it simple

• Be prepared to say “no”

Questions for Defining a Collection

• Who is going to use the material?– Is it a “captive market”?– How varied are the users?– Will it be open to everyone or just UArctic

members

• How will they use it?– Searchable interface?– Links in courses?– Use in multiple courses?– Will instruction be required?

• Who will define what is in the collection?– Instructors?

• Are only free things to be included?

• Do priced items need to be purchased?– Where will the money come from?

• One-time purchases• Annual subscriptions

• What parameters will you use?– Date?– Geographic restrictions?– Linguistic restrictions?– Formats?

• Where will the collection be “held”?– Do you need to own it? (make sure it stays

available)– Or can you just point to it?

• How will things get into and out of the collection?

• How will it be kept up to date?

• What software will the database run on?– How will the software be kept up to date?

• Who will assign the metadata?– What standard?– In what languages?

• How often and by what methods will the collection be evaluated?– Will use statistics be kept?
