UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA GRIZZLY FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1995, 2001 WEEK 8 #21/#25 Montana (5-2, 3-1) - Bye Week - GRIZ ENTER BYE WEEK WITH HOT HAND ON OFFENSE After seven straight weeks of action, the Montana football team will take some well-earned rest this Saturday during the bye week. The Grizzlies (5-2, 3-1 BSC) enter the weekend break with a truckload of momentum with three-straight wins following a two-game road sweep and a convincing victory over defending league champs North Dakota on Homecoming. With such momentum, some may think it may not be the ideal time to take a break, opting instead to keep the ball rolling. But with league contenders like Weber State and Northern Arizona still left on the schedule, and the always important game against Montana State on the horizon, head coach Bob Stitt calls this “the perfect time for a bye week.” “We’re a little banged up. Nothing serious, but bumps and bruises. A week off will allow us to head to Weber with our bodies and our minds at 100 percent.” Montana enters the bye week after posting its best offensive game of the season with 442 yards passing and 604 yards of total offense. Freshman quarterback Gresch Jensen was the man largely responsible for the passing-attack onslaught against UND with 423 yards in the air, despite a shaky start where he suffered three turnovers on UM’s first four drives of the game. “The numbers he put up in that game were with very limited time too,” said Stitt. “He didn’t play the fourth quarter and the three turnovers in the first quarter limited his yards too, so realistical- ly he could have thrown for 600 yards.” Six hundred yards. Let that sink in for a minute. Of all the amazing quarterback performances in Montana history, no player has ever crossed the 600-yard barrier, and only three players have achieved it in the 50-plus year history of the Big Sky Conference. Jensen’s 423 yards against North Dakota ties him at No. 20 on UM’s all-time greatest passing games list, right there with Brian Ah Yat’s 423 against Southern Utah in 1998. All the would’ves and could’ves in the world won’t give Jensen more yards after the fact, but it remains one of the best passing games in Grizzly history – especially for a Freshman. - Bye Week -

GRIZ ENTER BYE WEEK WITH HOT HAND ON OFFENSEAfter seven straight weeks of action, the Montana football team will take some well-earned rest this Saturday during the bye week.

But with league contenders like Weber State and Northern Arizona still left on the schedule, and the always important game against Montana State on the horizon, head coach Bob Stitt calls this “the perfect time for a bye week.”

“We’re a little banged up. Nothing serious, but bumps and bruises. A week off will allow us to head to Weber with our bodies and our minds at 100 percent.”

Montana enters the bye week after posting its best offensive game of the season with 442 yards passing and 604 yards of total offense.

“He didn’t play the fourth quarter and the three turnovers in the first quarter limited his yards too, so realistical-ly he could have thrown for 600 yards.”

Six hundred yards.

In fact, it is the best. All of Jensen’s games this season have been the best. And that is an incredibly rare feat.

Jensen’s 423 passing yard game against UND was the best performance by a freshman quarterback in modern Montana history. Surpassing some elite performances by greats such as Dave Dickenson, Jordan Johnson, and Marty Mornhinweg – the only other Griz QBs that started, or even saw significant playing time as either a true or redshirt freshman.

In four games as a starter, Jensen has racked up 1,630 yards passing and has averaged 356 yards per game during that time. Other freshmen to do something similar? It’s not even close.

125 yards. He followed that up a week later with a 186-yard, four touchdown game against Eastern Washington that tied the then-school record for TD passes in a game.

In 1992, Dickenson, the “Legend of the Fall,” threw for 129 yards and one touchdown as a redshirt freshman. And in 2010 Jordan Johnson’s best game as a true freshman was 19 yards and one TD against Idaho State. But neither Dickenson or Johnson were starters in their first year of action.

A productive freshman quarterback is so rare it’s difficult to find an apples-to-apples comparison to stack up against Jensen.

Dickenson burst onto the national scene a year later in 1993 as a redshirt sophomore, putting together four games of 400 yards or more, something that hadn’t been achieved by a freshman or sophomore until last week.

Jordan Johnson’s best game as a true sophomore was outstanding, tying the new school record for touchdowns in a game with six, and passing for 299 yards in a win over Weber State in 2011. Mornhinweg’s best game as a true sophomore came against Northern Iowa in 1981 when he passed for 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Of course, you can’t talk about outstanding sophomore performances without mentioning Brian Ah Yat.

Ah Yat played understudy to Dickenson during the ’95 National Championship season and led the Griz back to the title game as a true sophomore in 1996. During that season he set the still-stand-ing school record for passing yards in a game with 560 at Eastern Washington and followed it up with 510 against Northern Arizona in Missoula.

Earlier that season he threw for 453 yards against Sacramento State, making Jensen’s passing total the fifth-best in modern Griz history amongst freshmen OR sophomores.

All this stacks up to a rare performance indeed. But how rare is it? “It’s very rare,” says Stitt.

“I’ve had some really good QBs that turned out to be great in the end, but they were not able to do the things as a freshman that Gresch has been able to do.”

Montana still has more than a third of the season left to play on the 2017 schedule against some of the league’s most difficult opponents. Anything can happen.

But what is clear is that Griz fans are witnessing the birth of something special in Jensen and Stitt’s potent offensive attack.

He likely won’t throw for 400 yards in every game, but he’s making a habit of putting up big numbers and showing no fear in doing so for such a young player. Stitt believes he’s just getting warmed up too.

“I expect him to do some things that people are going to be amazed at,” said Stitt. “All the great quarterbacks we’ve coached at Mines, all had a least a 500-yard day, and one of them had a 600-yard day. So, I expect Gresch to take this offense, and take it to another level.”

The Montana Grizzly Sports Network is your radio home for Griz football action across the state of Montana. Tune in on game day hear the Griz LIVE all season long, featuring the “Voice of the Griz”, Riley Corcoran and Greg Sundberg.

Also tune in to the Bob Stitt Radio Show, your weekly look inside the Grizzly huddle every Thursday at 6 p.m. The Coaches’ Show airs LIVE from Brooks & Browns Bar & Grill at the Holiday Inn – Downtown Missoula.

GRIZ QUICK HITS:

• Jensen’s passing total of 1,630 yards this season rank him at No. 15 in FCS football, despite seeing minimum playing time in the first two games. Montana has also entered the top-10 in total offense, rising from No. 16 the week previous to No. 8 this week.

• Despite a blocked field goal attempt, Montana remains No. 1 in the nation in red zone offense. The Griz have turned 31-of-32 trips inside the opponent’s 20 into points, a 97 percent conversion rate and the best rate in all of FCS football. Of those 32 appearances in the red zone, UM has scored 24 touchdowns as well.

• The last Griz quarterback to throw for over 400 yards was Brady Gustafson against Southern Utah in 2016 when he threw for 415.

• Jensen has crossed the 400-yard mark for total offense twice this season with 459 yards rushing and passing against UND. The last time he crossed that mark was against EWU when he totaled 403 total yards.

• Jerry Louie-McGee set a new career-long catch against North Dakota with a 64-yard grab, extended the sophomore’s previous personal best by one yard.

• Junior receiver Keenan Curran leads the Griz in receiving yards so far this season with 512 and six touchdown catches. He has now passed his position coach Mike Ferriter on UM’s all-time TD catch list with 16, one more than Ferriter’s career total of 15.

• Led by a combined 99 yards from running backs Alijah Lee and Jeremy Calhoun against the Fighting Hawks, Montana outrushed a run-first team with two of the most dangerous running backs in the Big Sky 162-155 last week.

• Montana has now rushed for 150 yards or more in three-straight games and is now 3-1 when outrushing its opponent.

GRIZ IN THE POLLS: Montana improved to No. 21 in the STATS FCS media poll this week after making its season debut last week at No. 25. The Griz also entered the NCAA FCS coaches’ poll for the first time this season on Monday at No. 25 in the nation.

AROUND THE SKY: With no Griz to watch during the bye week, Montana fans should keep an eye on a few key matchups around the league in UM’s absence.

Montana State at Northern Colorado: The Bobcats (2-4, 2-2) travel south to face Northern Colorado (2-3- 1-2) on Homecoming in Greeley this weekend in the ROOT Sports Big Sky Game of the Week, with both teams looking to bounce back after a loss.

Northern Colorado will be without the services of starting QB Jacob Knipp, who passed for 413 yards and four touchdowns in a 43-42 win over Idaho State three weeks ago.

The Bears will have to contend with Montana State’s rushing attack, averaging over 245 yards on the ground so far this season thanks to quarterback Chris Murray, who is averaging over 105 yards rushing himself.

Eastern Washington at Southern Utah: The Thunderbirds (4-2, 2-1) pulled off a major upset last week, handing Weber State its first Big Sky loss of the season in Ogden. They return home to host the No. 8 Eastern Washington Eagles (5-2, 4-0), owning a pair of wins over ranked opponents already this season in Northern Iowa (No. 18) and Weber (No. 16).

UC Davis at Northern Arizona: Davis (3-3, 1-2) has been one of the big surprises of the Big Sky so far this season, with head coach Dan Hawkins leading the team to the best total offense in the league with an average of 483 yards per game.

That game will be a shootout with NAU taking the field with two-time Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week Case Cookus at QB, who is averaging 321 yards passing per game.

After traveling to Weber State next week, Montana returns home to face Northern Arizona on Nov. 4 in Missoula.

IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Freshman receiver Samori Toure is one of Montana’s leading receivers so far this season. A large chunk of his receiving yards have come from two catches: one for 71 yards against ISU and one for 80 yards against Savannah State. However, on both of those plays Toure was tripped up before he could reach the end zone, putting him in the UM record books for the longest pass ever without a TD (80) and the third-longest catch ever without a TD. The previous record of 72 was thrown by QB Shay Smithwick-Hann at Weber State in 2012.

Since Washington-Grizzly Stadium hosted its first season opener in 1987, the Grizzlies have gone 27-4 in opening games. Montana’s all-time record in the friendly confines is 193-29, an 87-percent winning percentage.

PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF: Senior Mike Ralston won a starting spot at right tackle during fall camp. It’s the fourth position he’s played for the Griz in his career. Ralston started four games for the Griz as a tight end in 2014 before moving over to the defensive side of the ball in 2015 as a DE. In 2016 he played “H” wide receiver, since then he bulked-up to 302 pounds to earn a spot on the O-line.

NEW STARTERS: Nine different Grizzlies earned their first career start in maroon and silver against Valparaiso in the home-opener; three on offense, five on defense and one specialist.

At quarterback, senior Reese Phillips made his first start since his senior year of high school, over 1,700 days previous to that day’s game. Mike Ralston also got his first start as a Grizzly at right tackle (see above).

Junior running back Jeremy Calhoun also made his first-ever start as RB’s coach Justin Green begins a season without a Nguyen brother since 2009.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker Vika Fa’atu-iese earned a start at the Mike linebacker spot, filling in for Connor Strahm who is serving a two-game suspension. Transfer defensive end Chris Favoroso picked up his first start as a junior, as did safety Evan Epperly. David Shaw, also a junior, made a start at defensive tackle over senior incumbent Brandt Davidson.

Perhaps the most surprising inaugural start at the home-opener was that of #37 Tucker Schye.

GAME DAY CAPTAINSEach week, the coaching staff will select a new group of seniors to lead the team out of the tunnel as game day captains.

PRODUCTION BELTSDefensive coordinator Jason Semore has start-ed a new tradition in the defensive locker room. Each week the coaching staff will award two boxing-style “production belts” to the two defen-sive players who leave the best performances on the field that day.

Schye leads the team in appearances with 39 (every game of his career) but has never picked up a start.

Also picking up his first start against Valpo was redshirt-freshman long snapper Matthew O’Donoghue.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE: 26 of Mon-tana’s 31 newcomers to the 2017 squad will redshirt this season, allowing the coaching staff to build for the future of the program. Freshman safety Isiahia Banks out of Mullen HS in Col-orado is scheduled to dress for the Griz this sea-son, but only to be used in case of emergency.

The last time Montana dug into its supply of true freshman was in 2015 when running back Jeremy Calhoun took the field at UC Davis and proceeded to rattle off nine touchdowns that season.

YOUTHFUL GRIZ: The Montana roster is load-ed with talent, but still skews toward youth as opposed to veteran experience. Among active players (non-redshirts), the Griz are suiting up a robust 23 freshmen and 18 sophomores, making up more than half of the 74-man squad.

On the week-one two-deep, Montana lined up 13 underclassmen as a starter or a backup on the offensive side of the ball and eight on the defensive side. Not to mention the specialists (P/K/LS), where the only upperclassman is junior punter Eric Williams.

PLAYING THE BEST: Montana’s game at UW the first FBS game for the Grizzlies since 2014 when UM nearly upset Wyoming in Laramie 17-12. Before that, Montana last played a FBS team in 2011 when UM went to Tennessee and fell 42-16. The last time the Griz played a ranked opponent was in 2006 when they faced the No. 16 Iowa Hawkeyes. At No. 7 in the previous week’s AP Poll, the Huskies were the highest ranked team UM has faced in modern history.

The contest against the Huskies marked the first time the two former Pacific Coast Conference foes had faced off since 1951 (when, coinci-dentally, the Huskies were ranked No. 8 in the nation), with the rivalry dating all the way back to 1920. The Griz are 1-17-1 all-time against the Huskies, with UM’s only win coming at UW in 1920.

In the 19-game series history against the Hus-kies, only one game was played in Missoula. Montana hosted Washington at UM on Home-coming weekend in 1927, with the Huskies going away 32-0 winners.

Montana’s 56-3 win over Savannah State marked only the third time in program history the Griz have faced an HBCU school, with all three meetings occurring in Missoula. The last time was in 2016 when the Griz defeated Mississip-pi Valley State. The first was against Jackson State in 1989, also a win for the Griz.

A DREAM COME TRUE: The Grizzlies squeezed in some time to make a little boy’s dream come true ahead of the game against Washington. Coach Stitt, Reese Phillips, Makena Simis, Coo-per Sprunk, director of football operations Colin Bonnicksen and Great Falls native Josh Horner paid a visit to Troy Ross, a three-year-old Griz fan from Great Falls the Friday night before the game while the rest of the team toured Husky Stadium. Ross, who was in the stands at the Sept. 2 home opener against Valparaiso, was rushed to Seattle Children’s Hospital the next week with a respiratory condition. “This little guy is a huge, huge, Griz fan,” said Stitt. “It was good for us to be there because as a parent, it’s really tough to see a three-year-old in the state Troy was.” “We wish him the best, and our prayers go out to him and his family, and we can’t wait to see him at the next Griz game,” Stitt added. “It’s just awesome to know that we have fans, that even when they’re in a tough situation, we can do something to lighten the situation up for them,” added Horner.

FRESH STARTS FOR THE GRIZ: Redshirt freshman Lewis Cowans made his first start at cornerback against Washington over junior CB Markell Sanders. Sanders graded out well after the UW game as the one responsible for the tipped pass that led to the Sandry touchdown, and will once again get the start against Savan-nah State. Josh Horner also got his first start of the year at Washington in the H receiver spot and pro-ceeded to lead the Griz with five catches for 34 yards.

Freshman Samori Toure got his first start as a kick returner against Washington, leading all players in the game with 143 total all-purpose yards.

Connor Strahm returned to action agaisnt Sa-vannah State at middle linebacker following his two-game suspension

RECORD SETTING OPPONENT: Washing-ton speedster Dante Pettis set a new Pac-12 conference for most punt returns for touchdowns against the Griz with a 67-yard return, the sev-enth of his career. Returning a punt for a TD against the Griz is a rare occurrence. The last time it happened to UM was in 2014 when, now, NFL receiver Cooper Kupp took it 67 yards as well for Eastern Washington. Montana’s loss at Washington is now tied for the fifth-worst in program history by point margin. The last time the Griz gave up a 56-point score line was in 1963 against Utah State. The last team to hang 60 on the Griz was Minnesota in 1985. The worst loss in program history dates back to 1931 when the Griz lost 69-0 at USC.

Josh Sandry’s pick-six at UW landed him in some pretty elite company. Only one other player has ever scored a touchdown off an interception thrown by Heisman candidate Jake Browning. Alabama’s Ryan Anderson picked off a Browning pass for a 26-yard TD in last year’s national semifinal. Anderson ended up being drafted by the Redskins in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft as the 49th overall pick and remains on their 53-man roster.

PHILLIPS INJURY: There was no hiding the fact that Grizzly starting quarterback Reese Phillips went down with a severe injury in the second quarter against Savannah State, witnessed by over 22,000 in Washington-Grizzly Stadium. The redshirt senior transfer from Kentucky underwent surgery that night at St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula and released the following statement on Tuesday morning regarding his condition. “First off, I’d like to thank all my teammates, coaches and the fans of Griz Nation who have reached out to me and treated me like family during this time. So you can hear it from me, I shattered my fibula, ruptured just about all the ligaments in my foot and dislocated my left foot all in one play. Pretty impressive, right? “Being the QB for this team is truly the honor of a lifetime and simply a dream come true. Although I won’t be on the field playing, I’ll be at every game doing everything in my power to help my team continue to reach our goals. I look forward to communicating more with Griz Nation in the near future. Until then let’s pack WGS this Saturday and get after the Eagles! Go Griz!” - Reese Phillips.

PHILLIPS ON THE SIDELINE: Montana quar-terback Reese Phillips was be back at Idaho State, but was leading from a position best suit-ed for a guy on crutches, a coaching position. The team announced earlier that week Phillips had officially made the transition to the role of undergraduate student coach, and is now able to travel with the team for the rest of its away contests.

2017 GRIZ SEASON NOTESSince a season-ending injury against Savannah State, Phillips has been seen putting around practice, leg elevated in a golf cart, doing what-ever he can to help the team, whether that be technical pointers or words of encouragement. #11STRONG: Phillips’ brother and Director of Football Operations Colin Bonnicksen imple-mented a token of appreciation for the injured QB with a large flag with the number 11 across the front that the team has run out of the tunnel with since the Eastern Washington game. Car-rying the 11 flag? Phillips’ friend and roommate Keenan Curran.

STRONG HAD A DAY: Montana senior safety Justin Strong picked up a trifecta of weekly FCS awards after collecting three interceptions a touchdown and 116 return yards against Port-land State – all with the use of only one hand. Strong was named the NCAA FCS National Defensive Player of the Week, the STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Week, and the ROOT Sports Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the week as well. The awards were the first weekly accolades for the Griz this season, and the first of Strong’s career. Strong injured his thumb in fall camp and has played the last four games with a “club” on his left hand to protect the cast.

TAKE A BOW JEREMY CALHOUN: Junior running back Jeremy Calhoun also posted a career day down at Portland State, rushing for over 100 yards for the first time as a Grizzly with 124 yards on 22 carries. Calhoun also scored a pair of touchdowns against the Vikings to put him at 23 in his career moving him into sixth place on Montana’s all-time rushing touchdowns list, passing his position coach Justin Green’s 22 career TDs.

BROTHER Vs. BROTHER: Montana’s Jerry Louie-McGee was awfully familiar with one of ISU’s defensive backs. Jerry’s brother Tucker Louie-McGee is a junior DB for the Bengals, and the team’s twelfth-leading tackler.

Montana’s win over ISU was the last time the two brothers will get the chance to meet on the football field in their careers, with the Griz not scheduled to play the Bengals again until after Tucker’s graduation.

COACH STITT MILESTONES: This season’s game at Idaho State marked the 30th game of head coach Bob Stitt’s career, and the Portland State game the week previous marked the 200th game of his 16-year coaching history. Heading into the UND game, Stitt was 18-12 in his three seasons at UM and 127-74 in 16 years as a head coach.

HOMECOMING RECORD: This year’s game against North Dakota marked the 98th home-coming football game in the history of the Uni-versity of Montana. With the win, the Griz now hold an overall 65-32-1 record on homecoming

and a 29-3 record since moving into Washing-ton-Grizzly Stadium in 1986. This year’s UM/UND matchup was the second time in history the two have played during Montana’s home-coming celebration. In 1941 North Dakota paid a visit to Missoula for homecoming weekend, with the Griz coming away with a 13-6 win.

STARTING FAST: In three seasons and 30 games under Coach Stitt, the Grizzlies were 6-8 in games where they have not scored a touchdown in the first two offensive drives of the game heading into the game against North Dakota. In UM’s two losses before the UND game, the Griz were forced to punt twice to start the game and dug themselves a 21-13 hole at halftime of the Idaho State game after punting twice to start the game.

Montana scored a touchdown on the second drive against the Fighting Hawks, and the Grizzly defense forced UND to punt five-straight times to start the game.

GROUND GAME: With an ever-improving rushing attack led by juniors Jeremy Calhoun and Alijah Lee, the Griz averaged 164.5 yards rushing during the two-game road sweep of PSU and ISU.

Compare that to the 74 average yards rush-ing per game over the first four games of the season, and it paints a picture of a drastically improved ground game with more than double the output heading into the UND game.

Led by a combined 99 yards from Lee and Calhoun against the Fighting Hawks, Montana outrushed a run-first team with two of the most dangerous running backs in the Big Sky 162-155.
