Griz Meet Red Flash For First Time to Open Season

The second season of Montana Grizzlies football under head coach Bob Stitt opens on Saturday, Sept. 3, under the lights in a refurbished Washing-ton-Grizzly Stadium, against an unfamiliar FCS foe, the Saint Francis Red Flash of the Northeast Conference.

With the Red Flash, the Griz open the season at home against a team from east of the Mississippi for the first time since 2013 when Appalachian State visited, and for only the third time since 2004 when the Maine played in Mis-soula.

THE GAME: The Griz (0-0) return a young, but talented team, loaded with nearly 40 new faces from the 2015 squad that went to the second round of the playoffs, finishing with an 8-5 record.

Preseason All-America defensive end and Defensive Player of the Year watch list member Caleb Kidder returns to lead Montana, donning UM’s legacy num-ber 37 for the second-straight year.

Saint Francis comes to town boasting a pair of its own preseason All-Ameri-cans in Lorenzo Jerome, who earned multiple accolades over the off season as a safety and kick returner, and kicker Lance Geesey.

LISTEN: Radio announcer Riley Corcoran will call his first game as the new “Voice of the Griz” on Saturday, supported by long-time color commentator Greg Sundberg in the booth, and Adam Painter on the sidelines. Fans can tune-in statewide to hear the call on the Montana Grizzly Sports Network.

SERIES HISTORY: This is the first meeting between the Grizzlies and The Red Flash. In fact, this is the Grizzlies first-ever meeting with a member of the Northeast Conference.

Saint Francis is 0-1 in program history against Big Sky opponents, falling 41-33 to Cal Poly in 2010, the only recorded matchup between SFU and the Big Sky.

First and 10 with the Griz:

Coach Stitt and the Grizzlies are seeking the program’s 30th winning season in the past 31 years in 2016. The Griz extended the program’s total playoff appearance record to 23 last year, the most in all of FCS football.

Montana has added 39 new players to the program since December of last year. That, on top of 21 players in Stitt’s inaugural recruiting class as head coach. As a result, 11 players will get their first start in maroon and silver on Saturday.

The Griz return 10 starters from last season, including five all-Big Sky perform-ers. In total, 28 lettermen return to the team that is comprised of 16 seniors, 20 juniors, 16 sophomores and 44 freshmen (both redshirt and true).

In addition to Caleb Kidder earning a place on the national preseason Defen-sive Player of the Year watch list and All-America honors, he also took home the Big Sky Preseason Defensive Player of the Year award this summer. Kidder is UM’s leading returning tackler from last season, racking up 82 tackles 10 TFLs and 3.5 sacks as a tackle. This season, he makes the move to defensive end after trimming more than 20 pounds off his frame.

Senior Yamen Sanders joins Kidder on the league’s preseason honors list at safety. Sanders, who transferred to UM from Arizona ahead of the 2015 fall camp, is the Grizzlies’ second leading returning tackler from last season with 36 take-downs.

Brady Gustafson leads the Montana offense for the second-straight year as one of the two elected team captains (Kidder the other). Despite missing half the season last year to injury, Gustafson put together one of the top-25 passing seasons in Griz history, throwing for 1,984 yards in seven games.

With a career total of 2,024 passing yards, “Gus” could potentially move in to the top-10 career passers in UM history with a productive 2016 season.

After finishing 8-5 in 2015, the Grizzlies have landed at No. 13 in the preseason national polls. UM picked up 264 points in the FCS Coaches’ Poll and 1921 points in the STATS FCS media poll. Montana’s No. 13 ranking in the media poll was the highest of any Big Sky team.

Regionally, the Griz were picked to finish second in the Big Sky Conference me-dia and coaches’ poll. UM received seven first-place votes and 283 points in the media poll to finish behind Northern Arizona. UM tied Portland State for second place in the coaches’ poll with 121 points. NAU was also picked by the coaches to win the league title. Montana travels to face the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff on October 22.

Washington-Grizzly Stadium received a facelift in the offseason, with the instal-lation of three new video screens that more than double the size of the old Griz vision. The high-def screens were purchased by Montana’s media rights partner Learfield Sports from ANC, a leader in digital displays. A new sound system was included in the installation of the new Griz Vision as well. A new, state of the art playing surface was also installed over the summer. After eight years of hard wear, the FIELDTURF corporation installed their “Revolution 360” turf at UM, currently in use in stadiums used by the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

Four Downs with the Red Flash

Saint Francis finished second in the Northeast Conference last season with a 7-4 record. The Red Flash dropped two early nonconference games against traditional FCS powers Towson (35-20) and Youngstown State (48-3). In the final game of their season, SFU fell to eventual NEC Champion Duquesne, who went on to represent the conference in the FCS playoffs. The Dukes went on to face William & Mary in the opening round, falling 52-49.

The Red Flash is coached by former NFL All-Pro lineman Chris Villarrial, who currently sits third in school history in all-time wins with 24. He was named the 2015 NEC Coach of the Year, and was one of 15 finalists for the STATS FCS Coach of the Year (won by Portland State’s Bruce Barnum), the first time a SFU coach has been in that position.

SFU returns 14 starters from last season’s 7-4 campaign. Six starters on of-fense, and eight on defense return.

In addition to Geesey & Jerome picking up preseason honors, three other play-ers were named to the preseason All-NEC team, including running back Marcus Bagley, center Jimmy Marks and nose tackle Wesley Nagaseau.

Saint Francis’ roster is comprised of 39 players who hail from the Keystone State.
