UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA GRIZZLY FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1995, 2001 GRIZ LOOK TO CLIP WINGS OF SOARING DUCKS Fresh off a pair of confidence-boosting wins to start an already tough season 2-0, Montana travels to Eugene this week to face the biggest challenge of the year (and one of the biggest challenges in program history), as the Grizzlies face the Pac-12 favorite Oregon Ducks. At No. 15 in this week’s AP poll, the Ducks are the second-highest ranked FBS team the Grizzlies have faced in modern history, an event that doesn’t roll around that often for UM. In the last 20 years, the Griz have only played nine FBS teams, and just four not named Idaho. Saturday’s matchup at Oregon will be the team’s third FBS game since 2014 when UM nearly upset Wyoming in Laramie. It’s also only the third time UM has faced a na- tionally ranked team after facing No. 16 Iowa in 2006 and No. 7 Washington in 2017. But this year’s Ducks are a bird of a different feather. Led by Heisman Trophy candi- date and presumed first-round NFL Draft pick Justin Herbert (who is protected by the most experienced offensive line in college football with 163 combined starts), Oregon entered the season expected to be the Pac-12’s College Football Playoff representa- tive. After a second-half stumble against Auburn in the season opener, the Ducks exacted revenge last week with an 11-touchdown, 77-6 drubbing of the Nevada Wolfpack last week to prove they have offensive firepower as advertised. But Montana’s offense has also been clicking along at one of the best paces in pro- gram history with senior QB Dalton Sneed under center. After an upset win at South Dakota and a second-half trouncing of North Alabama, the Griz lead the nation in first downs with 64 and are ranked seventh nationally in total offense, averaging 520 yards over two games. The defense has also been superb, allowing just seven points to be scored in the second-half of the first two games of the season, and sitting third in the nation (first in the Big Sky) in passes intercepted with four on the year. “I liked how our guys responded to a team that was in here and wanted to play and play hard. I thought that it was just a good all-around effort for our team,” said head coach Bobby Hauck at Monday’s press conference. “We just need to keep progressing and improving and getting better. That’s what good teams do throughout a season. And certainly, to go in and play the Oregon Ducks we’re going to need a great effort.” Kickoff from Autzen Stadium (54,000) is set for 7:45 p.m. local time (8:45 p.m. MT), giving the Grizzlies their second-straight game under the lights. WHERE TO WATCH: The #Pac12AfterDark game will be shown exclusively on the Pac-12 Network, with a stream available at Pac-12.com/live and on the Pac-12 Now App. Veteran announcer Roxy Bernstein will have the play-by-play call, with analysis from Anthony Herron. at least one member of the Pac-12 Network commentary crew on Saturday. Bernstein served as the long-time voice of Cal Basketball under former Grizzly head coach Mike Montgomery and current Griz hoops head coach Travis DeCuire.

LISTEN: “Voice of the Griz” Riley Corcoran and Greg Sundberg will bring you the action Autzen over the airwaves on the Montana Grizzly Radio Network and its 13 affiliates across the state. Fans can also listen worldwide via the internet at GoGriz.com/listen and via TuneIn.com and the TuneIn App.

SERIES HISTORY: The Montana/Oregon all-time series is a long one that dates back to the first meeting in 1928 when both schools were members of the old Pacific Coast Conference along with California, Washington, Oregon State, Washington State, USC, Idaho, and later, UCLA.

The Griz are 0-7-1 against the Ducks, with each of the eight meetings played in Eugene. Coach Ed Chinske’s Montana team picked up the only tie between the two programs (14-14) in his first season at UM in 1952.

Other notable meetings between UM and OU include the second-to-last meeting in 1993, when Dave Dickenson (coached by current Grizzly assistant head coach Brent Pease) entered the game late and sparked a second-half comeback that nearly saw the Griz pull off one of the biggest upsets in program history, and led help cement Dickenson’s legendary status.

TAILGATE TOWN: The Montana Grizzly Scholarship Association kicks-off its 2019 away game tailgate party slate this week in Eugene. The official GSA Griz fan tailgate will be lo-cated at Oregon’s “Pregame Tailgate Headquarters” Essig Field, north of Autzen Stadium. Essig Field is located across Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from Autzen, and opens four hours prior to kickoff at 3:45 p.m. local time. The GSA tailgate is open to the public, and Griz fans of all ages are welcome to attend. There is no cover charge to enter, and Food and beverages will be available to purchase.

GRIZ TRACKS

MOVIN’ ON UP: Montana’s emphatic win over North Alabama impressed the national panel of voters enough to boost the Grizzlies up to No. 18 in the AFCA Coaches’ Poll and 20 in the STATS FCS Media Poll. UM started the year unranked in the Coaches’ poll and at 25 in the media poll, and slid up to No. 22/23, respectively after winning at South Dakota.

JERRY WATCH: The odds are good that senior receiver Jerry Louie-McGee will become the all-time leader in catches in Montana history this week at Oregon, needing just three more to break Raul Pacheco’s record of 192 that has stood since 1998. Louie-McGee was Montana’s leading receiver against UNA, hauling in seven passes for 78 yards, good enough to move him past legends Jamaal Jones and Matt Wells on the all-time list into second place behind Pacheco.

With 1,928 receiving yards to his name throughout his career, “Mr. Electricity” is also now on UM’s top-20 all-time list in that category, poised to move into the top-10 with a continued strong season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: The senior from Coeur d’Alene also etched his name in Montana’s record book with 150 punt return yards against UNA, highlighted by a 74-yard touchdown that sent the Washington-Grizzly Stadium crowd into meltdown. His 150 yards bested his previous PR of 118 yards set against Northern Iowa in 2016.

It was a performance that earned him the second ROOT Sports Special Teams Player of the Week award of his career on Monday. Now with three punt return TDs in his career, Louie-McGee is now tied for the most of any Grizzly in school history with Marc Mariani and Levander Segars.

BATTLE OF THE RETURNS: With Louie-McGee’s fast feet leading the way, the Grizzlies enter the week ranked first in FCS football in total punt return yards with 156 in two games, currently the most total return yardage at any level of college football (FBS, FCS, D-II, D-III).

Thanks to Jevon Holland, the Ducks enter the week ranked first in FBS football, close behind with 139 yards of punt returns over two games.

GOOD KNIGHT: In his first start as a Grizzly sophomore running back Marcus Knight had a breakout game against UNA, rushing 19 times for 89 yards and three touchdowns. After catching a pass for a touchdown in South Dakota, Knight now leads the Big Sky in total TDs with four on the season, good enough to rank fourth in the nation. His three rushing TDs are also a league-best and the sixth most in the FCS.

THE NEED FOR SNEED: Sneed continued the strong start to his senior season with 296 yards of total offense last week. He now ranks second in the FCS in completions per-game (30.5), sixth in the nation and second in the Big Sky in passing yards (696), and fourth in the nation in total offense.

LINEBACKER BATTLE: Montana All-American linebacker Dante Olson won’t be the only highly decorated backer on the field when the Griz face the Ducks. Oregon senior LB Troy Dye has led the Ducks in tackles in 19 of his 37 career games at UO and is one of the top returning tacklers in the nation.

Both Olson and Dye were placed on the Butkus Award Watch List for the top linebacker in America in the leadup to the 2019 season.

KICKING ***: Grizzly punter Adam Wilson has been superb early in his senior season, with Montana leading the nation in net punting with an average of 47.6 yards per-punt. Not only that, the former rugby player at Arizona showed his toughness against UNA, lowering his shoulder to fight for yards on a fake put that resulted in a Griz first down.

• Junior kicker Brandon Purdy is also on fire so far this season. The Kalispell native is one of three placekickers in the Big Sky to remain perfect a perfect 10-for-10 on PATs this

season. He also tied his career-long field goal with a 47-yard boot against the Lions.

FLOWERS POWER: Malik Flowers continues to lead the Big Sky in kick return average with 133 yards on the season. The sophomore is now averaging 26.6 yards over 5 returns this season, the 12th-best average in the FCS.

600 CLUB: Montana improve its all-time record to 596-501 (.541) with the win over North Alabama, meaning the Griz need just four more wins this season to join the 600 Club in FCS football, a threshold fewer than 20 teams have ever crossed in the subdivision.

HOMECOMING: Montana has six players on the roster this season who hail from the state of Oregon, including senior preseason Defensive Big Sky MVP Dante Olson (Medford) and receiver Samori Toure (Portland). GRIZZLIES FROM OREGON

MISSISSIPPI MUD: Montana increased its all-time record in Washington-Grizzly Stadium against visiting teams from east of the Mississippi River to 31-7 after last week’s defeat of North Alabama.

The Grizzlies will get the chance to increase that record sooner than later when the Mon-mouth Hawks visit Missoula on Sept. 21 all the way from West Long Branch, N.J., a little over an hour south of New York City.

KEEPIN’ IT CLEAN: Montana was penalized just twice against North Alabama, bringing the team’s season total to nine penalties over two games – the fourth-fewest in the Big Sky to date.

LAST TIME IT HAPPENED

• Knight’s three-touchdown game was the most of any Grizzly in a single game in a little less than a year, with the last three TD game coming on Sneed’s record-setting day against Sacramento State.

• Montana’s defense forced North Alabama QB Christian Lopez into throwing three inter-ceptions last week, something the senior signal-caller is not accustomed to. The Lions threw just four INTs in 306 pass attempts during the 2018 season, with Lopez not throwing a pick for 25-straight quarters of football. The last opposing QB to throw three INTs to the Griz? Northern Colorado’s Conor Reagan in 2017’s 44-14 blowout Grizzly win.

QUICK HITS

• Sophomore Safety Robby Hauck picked up the first interception of his career last week against UNA, hauling in a deflected pass by Dareon Nash in the endzone to thwart a Lion score.

• Dante Olson moved up the all-time leading tackler list at UM with nine tackles against UNA, passing Alex Shaw and Blaine McElmurry to enter the week at No. 31 on the list.

• The Griz are now 8-2 in night games inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

• Junior linebacker Jace Lewis had a big game in taming the Lions last week, totaling seven tackles and asserting himself with a game-high two QB hits, a new career-high.

B o b b y H a u c k became the 37th h e a d football c o a c h at the Univer-sity of M o n -tana on Nov. 30, 2 0 1 7 .

He was formally introduced to Griz na-tion a day later on December 1, 2017, in a press conference at the Washing-ton-Grizzly Stadium Club. 2019 will be his fourteenth year as a col-lege football head coach and his ninth year as the head coach at Montana. In his first tenure at UM from 2003-2009 Hauck won more games than any other coach in FCS football, led the Grizzlies to three national championship appear-ances, and won seven-straight Big Sky Conference championships. In 2018 Hauck became the winningest coach in Montana history, surpassing the great Don Read with 86 wins in eight seasons. Hauck is also the winningest coach in Big Sky history (by win percent-age) and is the fastest coach in league history to reach the 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80-win plateaus. He also picked up his 100th overall win and his 50th Big Sky win in 2018. In his first stint at UM, Hauck’s Grizzlies outscored their opponents 3,079-1,795 in his 97-game tenure. He also coached 37 first-team All-Big Sky selections. His 82 percent winning average was the highest in the FCS at the time, and he led UM to three perfect seasons in Big Sky play with a 47-6 league record, win-ning at least a share of the Big Sky title in each of his seven seasons. He is a three-time Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year and was named the D1-AA (FCS) Region 5 Coach of the Year in 2006. He was also a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award in 2009. Under Hauck, the Grizzlies have also excelled in the classroom. From 2003-2009, Montana placed 104 football play-

ers on Academic All-Big Sky teams, the most, or second most in the league each year. In each of those seasons, football student-athletes also graduated at a higher rate than their campus counter-parts, including a remarkable 90 percent rate in 2005. In 2018 the Grizzlies posted the two highest grade point averages in program history, including a combined 3.07 term GPA in the fall. That semester, Hauck’s Grizzlies also posted five perfect 4.0 GPAs, 20 players made the Dean’s List, and 24 were named to the Academic All-Big Sky team. The UM alum returned to his native Montana in 2017 after five seasons as the head coach at UNLV, and three seasons serving as the Associate Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator at San Diego State.

He began his coaching career with the Grizzlies in 1988 after earning a bach-elor’s degree in business and physical education at Montana in 1987. “It is an honor and a privilege to be able to come back home to a place that is so important to me. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue the tradition of excellence at the University of Montana. I am absolutely committed to success both on and off the field. I cannot wait to see what the future holds, and look forward to being a strong advocate for the University as a whole,” said Hauck.

From 2010-2014 Hauck served as head coach and special teams coordinator at UNLV. As head coach, he led the Reb-els to the Heart of Dallas Bowl in 2013 - their only winning season since 2000, only the fourth bowl game in UNLV his-tory, and the first to be played on New Year’s Day. In 2015, Hauck accepted the role as special teams coordinator at San Di-ego State under legendary head coach Rocky Long. There he coached kick returner Rashaad Penny, a three-time Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year and 2017 Offensive Player of the Year - the only player in league history to win both awards in the same season. Penny also holds the NCAA re-cord for career kick returns for a touch-down (7).

Grizzly football jersey #37 began its lega-cy in 1983. Griz fullback and Plentywood native Kraig Paulson began the tradition of passing #37 on to a younger player who hailed from the state of Montana. Paulson was known for his hard-nosed play and workman mentality. So the tradition began. Number 37 has come to represent the Spir-it of Montana… hard work, dedication to the team, and tough play on the gridiron.

2019 GRIZ SEASON NOTESSTREAKS ALIVE: Montana’s win over North Alabama extended the Grizzlies’ streak of home-opener wins inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium to 16-straight, tied for the sixth-longest active winning streak in the nation.

The Griz also snapped one of the longest home-opener win streaks in FCS football this season, defeating South Dakota 31-17 at the DakotaDome on week one. The Coyotes entered the game having won 16-straight home openers themselves.

Interestingly, the last time Montana lost a home-opener was in 2003 against North Dakota State, who extended its national-best home-opener win streak to 21 this season.

Montana has only lost four season home-open-ers in Washington-Grizzly Stadium history since playing the first one in 1987. The first game played in WGS was also a win for the Griz, a 38-31 victory over Idaho State in October of 1986.

SNEED SHINES: Montana quarterback Dalton Sneed posted one of the best individual passing games in Montana history in the season opener at South Dakota, throwing for 427 yards and three touchdowns.

His total of 427 yards in the air ranks is the 18th-best passing game in a long history of illustrious Grizzly quarterbacks, but it was his completions that really climbed the charts.

With 37 pass completions (on 52 attempts), Sneed’s senior season premier is the fourth-best in program history. The only QBs with more completions in a game are: 47: Brady Gustafson @ Cal Poly, 2016 (a Big Sky Record), 43: Dave Dickenson @ Idaho, 1995, and 38: Dave Dick-enson vs. Idaho, 1994.

Sneed’s 427 yards in the air are the most from any winning quarterback in the nation in the first two weeks of action in the FCS.

THIRD DOWN OR BUST: Third down is a do-or-die situation for a football team, and the Griz came through when it mattered most on both sides of the ball at South Dakota better than nearly any team in the country on week one action.

On offense, the Griz converted 11 of 17 third down attempts, tied for the fifth-best percent-age in FCS football at .647 percent – the best percentage in the Big Sky against a Division-I opponent that week.

The Griz were equally impressive on defense, allowing a potent USD offense just two third

#CFB150: November 6, 2019 will mark the 150th anniversary of what is traditionally con-sidered the first college football game, played between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869. The Montana Grizzlies, alongside the NCAA, College Football Playoff, and various national sports media will undergo a year-long celebration at all levels to commemorate 150 years of college football, and all the good the game does for countless people nationwide.

The Grizzlies will be wearing a CFB150 patch on their jerseys this season to commemorate this monumental occasion.

Montana Football will celebrate the 50th an-niversary of the 1969 Grizzlies all season long in 2019. A Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame team, the ’69 Griz were the first to go undefeated in the regular season, and the first team at Montana to win a Big Sky Championship. They were also the first Grizzlies to play in the Camellia Bowl for the Division-II National Championship. The ’69 Griz went undefeated that year at 10-0 in the regular season, the most wins of any Griz-zly team in 70 years at the time, and remained the most until the 1989 team went 11-3.

The 1969 squad had a school-record 11 first team All-Big Sky selections: Arnie Blancas, Tim Gallagher, Bil Gutzman, Kent Miller, Jim Nord-strom, Roy Robinson, John Stedham, Karl Stein, Larry Stranahan, and Tuufuli Uperesa. Stein still holds the Big Sky single-season interception record with 11that season.

The 1969 Griz were inducted into the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 along with the 1970 Griz, who also went undefeated in the regular season at 10-0. The teams were coached by Jack Swarthout, whose 51 wins were the most in school history until Don Read crossed that mark in 1993.

down conversions on 10 attempts – tied for the sixth-best percentage (.200) in the FCS. That percentage was also the second-best in the Big Sky that week behind an Idaho defense who only forced eight third downs against Penn State in a 79-7 loss.

FINISH STRONG: In 2018, Montana the Griz let off the gas and gave away four different fourth quarter leads, and have been focusing on finishing games strong ever since. Well, mission accomplished.

UM held South Dakota scoreless in the fourth quarter, and barely gave the ‘Yotes any chance to climb back in the game by dominating the time of possession in the final period. The Grizzlies held the ball for a total of 12:08 in the fourth quarter, giving USD just 2:52 to work with.

Overall, the Griz won the possession battle by more than 10 minutes, keeping control for 35:27. That’s :27 longer than any game total in 2018.

FRESH STARTS: While Montana returns a vastly more experienced team overall in 2019, a total of five Grizzlies made their first-ever starts in maroon & silver at South Dakota in the season-opener.

2019 GRIZ SEASON NOTESOn offense, freshman guard Tyler Ganoung started after a strong fall camp. After starting nine times at guard last year, senior Cy Sirmon made his first start at center in Vermillion as well.

There were more new faces on the defensive side of the ball, however, with three of the start-ing front-four getting their first run-out, and one linebacker who might be the biggest surprising first-time starter on the team.

Preseason All-Big Sky pick Jace Lewis made his first-ever start for the Griz, despite being a key performer at UM in his sophomore season. Rocky Mountain College Graduate Transfer Ry-der Rice also picked up a start in his first game a senior for the Griz. Also getting his first start after transferring to Montana was Joe Babros, who joined the team earlier this summer out of N.C. State.

The only freshman to earn a start for the defense was Alex Gubner, who turned plenty of heads during fall camp as well.

O CAPTAINS! MY CAPTAINS! The Grizzly players voted on the team’s 2019 captains at the end of fall camp and called upon three of UM’s most decorated players to lead them this fall. Seniors Dalton Sneed, Dante Olson, and Jesse Sims, each known for leading by example, were elected captain this season. Sneed returns for his second-straight season as captain after breaking several records in one of the top overall QB seasons in UM history. Olson was elected captain after leading all of Division-I football in tackles-per-game and shattering the school record with 151 as a junior. A leader on the field and in the weight room, Sims was also elected captain in his senior season.

ON SCHOLARSHIP: Coach Hauck made the dream of being a scholarship student-athlete come true for one Grizzly during fall camp. Sophomore offensive tackle Dylan Cook earned a scholar-ship after working his way into the two-deep. Cook, a Butte native, came to Mon-tana two years ago after playing quarterback at Montana Northern and has adjusted well to the offensive line. HEADS UP QB PLAY: It takes a high football IQ to play the quarterback position at any level, and the Grizzlies roster is loaded with them In ad-dition to the four QBs listed on the team roster, former high school signal-callers are prevalent throughout the team… even the offensive line (Cook). In fact, the only position group that does not contain a former QB? The D-Line. GRADUATE GRIZ: In an effort to promote student-athlete academic success, The National Football Foundation recognized Montana natives Josh Sandry and Ryder Rice as two of 1,439 football players across the country at all levels of college football who have already obtained a degree and will play this fall while pursuing second diplomas in a nation-wide press release Tuesday.

The pair are also two out just of 353 players from 82 FCS schools to earn a place on the list.

Former Griz foot-ball star Vince Hunts-berger, now a Doctor of Emer-gency Medicine, has been selected

to the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame, UM Director of Athletics Kent Haslam announced in June.

A native of Libby, Huntsberger played for the Grizzlies from 1998-2001 and achieved enormous success both on the field and in the classroom as the 2001 National Championship MVP and a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.

He never missed a game in his career at UM, starting in 55 in a row. He is Montana’s all-time leading tackler with school-record 469 career stops (includes playoff games), 265 of which were solos.

He was tabbed the league’s defensive MVP in 1999 and 2001. In his four years as a starter, the Griz went 45-10 and won four league titles and garnered the 2001 Division I-AA National Championship.

He will be inducted into the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame on November 15 at the Holiday Inn Downtown in Missoula the night before Mon-tana’s final regular-season home contest of the year against Weber State.
