Go Griz

UNIVERSITY TOWN, MISSOULA, MTWith about 70,000 people, Missoula has the sophistication and attractions of a bigger city while keeping its small-town feel and laid-back style. Whatever your thing is – strolling, shopping, festival-going, coffee-drinking, music-listening or theater-going – you will find it in Missoula.

When two UM alumni meet anywhere in the world, we open our conversation with a simple “Go Griz.”

8

Griz Nation! There’s a great sense of loyalty and pride among Grizzlies. We bleed maroon, and this spirit can be witnessed at campus events like Griz games, plays, music concerts, lectures and at local businesses and events around town.

UNIVERSITY TOWN, MISSOULA, MT

When two UM alumni meet anywhere in the world, we open our conversation with a simple “Go Griz.”

Whether you choose to live in a residence hall or a university apartment only a few blocks from campus, getting to campus and meeting new people is easy. UM has a variety of campus living options that are convenient, safe and, most all, fun. Get to know people with similar interests or those who are completely different.

Griz SpiritGrizzlies have a spirit of adventure, innovation and ingenuity that can’t be matched. Western Montana is a hub of adventure and outdoor exploration in all seasons. Or maybe your gravitational pull will come from our local music scene, theater, festivals, art galleries or a Griz game.

Paying for College Nearly every student is eligible to obtain some form of financial aid to assist with the cost of education. There are two types: merit-based aid (scholarships) and aid based on need.

Scholarships All applicants are automatically considered for scholarships - there is no need for a separate application or essay. Applicants who are residents of states that are members of the Western Undergraduate Exchange program for reduced tuition are also automatically considered for the WUE scholarship. Those states are Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).

Need-Based Aid UM awards need-based aid using the Department of Education criteria for award levels. To be considered for need-based aid, including student and parent loans, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Campus VisitsExperience the University of Montana in person. The campus visit program operates year round and offers an opportunity to see inside UM and create your own impression.

The campus visit includes an information presentation about UM, a guided tour of campus, optional meetings with faculty in your area of interest, and complimentary lunch at our award-winning Food Zoo.

Visits are available Monday through Friday, except holidays. If possible, come during the academic year to experience campus life at its fullest. (Although Missoula is spectacular during the summer.)

To give us time to prepare and arrange for faculty to meet with you, schedule your visit at least two weeks in advance. During holidays and breaks, visits and tours are limited. Register for a campus visit at admissions.umt.edu/visit.

UM DAYS (OPEN HOUSE PROGRAM):Prospective students and their families can experience what life is really like at the University of Montana by attending one of our UM Days. It’s a full-day event that includes an admissions and financial aid presentation, campus tour, student panel, a separate session just for parents, residence hall tours and academic department meetings. We’ll even buy your lunch.

GRIZ NIGHT:Held during the month of July, Griz Night is our overnight campus visit experience for high school juniors and seniors. Spend the night in a residence hall, experience a college class, tour campus, relax on the Oval and learn what it means to be a Grizzly from current UM students and professors.

Register for UM Days or Griz Night online at admissions.umt.edu/visit

Apply for Federal Financial Aid406-243-5373 | [email protected] | umt.edu/finaid

Use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for help paying for college based on family income and assets. There are two ways to complete the FAFSA: fill out the form online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or obtain the application from your high school counselor. Include University of Montana school code 002536 as one of your college choices on the FAFSA. Online information and tips are available at umt.edu/finaid.

The FAFSA for the next academic year is available on Jan. 1, and it is permissible to use an estimate of your household income when completing the form. You do not need to have completed your income tax return before submitting the FAFSA.

Reserve Housing406-243-2611 | [email protected] | umt.edu/residencelife

• To reserve your residence hall room, complete the application online and submit a $200 prepayment and a $25 processing fee.

• Freshmen with less than 30 semester credits are required to live on campus. New student housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Complete My Academics Tasks In the late spring the Office for Student Success hosts a web portal, called My Academics, for

all newly admitted freshmen. Upon admission to UM, OSS emails instructions for how to log on to your personal site, which contains information relevant to you and your chosen major: a list of your first semester core courses, your ACT/SAT and writing placement scores, information about how to change a major, and links to academic resources for further information.

My Academics displays your personalized My To-Do List, setting forth all of the academic tasks you must complete before June 1 to be registered in the high-demand courses for your major. One of those tasks – completing the Academic Interest Questionnaire (A-IQ) – allows you to indicate specific interests within your chosen major, as well as list high school courses and courses taken for college and AP credit.

Orientation Programs support your transition to campus. Visit the orientation website for up-to-date information at umt.edu/orientation.
